I just bought one today for equivalency of 5 dollars at the lumber yard, but then I'm closer to the source.
The down side with Mora knives, especially the basic ones, is that they're so cheap that one often ends up abusing them horribly. It could last years if used as a _knife_ instead of a door wedge, screwdriver, pry bar, wire cutter, concrete stirrer etc.
    It's a good knife!

Exactly that's why I got one for my kids I know for learning to take care of a knife, thease are great and will last for quite some time, if not forever but if they happen to break or lose it it won't be a huge lose.

    • @badjim4323

Typical European mentality, we bought it cheap, so let's abuse it to hell. I feel you 😂😂

A knife isn't a crowbar, chisel, hammer, screwdriver or ace, yet people abuse knives simply because they are led to believe it can handle it, there's no real reason to do half the things people do to knives
      Right tool for the job,
seems to be the broken record phrase of the baby boomer generation, yet it's worth its weight in gold

When I first got into knives and started tinkering with knife making, I thought Mora knives were a joke. They weren't full tang, they weren't cool, they had shitty plastic sheaths and they looked like something your grandfather would buy because its "practical". Now Im a bit older and wiser, I have finally realised why Morakniv is one of the best knife making companies in the world, making spectacularly good knives: They constantly strive to give you the absolute best quality knife for the money you pay. Thats all they do.
I own some very expensive high end knives that are considered masterpieces, and the best in their class. I have since found out that the manufacture of these knives was outsourced to Chinese manufacturers where heat treatment and quality control is a total fucking crap shoot. For example I spent a fortune on my Rat 7, and then found out it was from a batch made in China and there is a percentage chance it will shatter after a bit of medium use. Its great they will refund me, but if you can only take ONE knife to the woods, would you pay hundreds of dollars for a knife that MIGHT be amazing, but MIGHT shatter in your face and injure you after a few heavy swings?
I think quality control is something people dont consider enough. Who cares how good your knife is, if there is a 5-10% chance it will snap when you really need it? I will never trust that RAT 7 and will always have to take a secondary with me in case it breaks. Thats a pretty shit situation for a knife I paid a lot of money for. So what will I do? Ill chuck a Mora in the bag just in case.
Mora have insane high levels of quality control, and give the best tolerances for performance-versus-cost of any company I know. Refund policies dont mean shit when you are in the woods.... Mora makes knives wont ever catastrophically fail when you least expect it. And that right there is the biggest single reason to trust them.
Great to see someone championing a budget knife. Great video.

My girlfriend got me a three pack of Mora knives for Christmas. The set contained a 511, 546, and a Robust. A couple days later, my son got his first deer (H&R single shot .44 mag). I managed to skin and process an entire white tail deer with just the 511. I only had to touch up the edge when everything was done. In my opinion, these knives are worth their weight in gold.

These knives are so cheap here in sweden, crazy value. I've had many other 'bushcraft' knives before and truth to be told, nothing feels as good as a Mora. Combo it with a small hatchet and you got yourself a great survival kit.
Just bought me two of these and it was love at first sight.
Paid 4.5$ for the carbon and 5.7$ for the stainless.

I just received my first Mora Garberg... This knife is EPIC !!! Build quality is superior. The one thing I really like about this knife that no other knife has is that it has a short drop at the point allowing this knife to be extra strong. Other knife makers tend to make a false blade on top in taper it an inch back. This knife does not. The taper is less than 5 mm, which gives the knife a whole lot of strength up front. For 70 bucks this is the best knife there is...

Now no matter what, I always have a very sharp very capable knife even if I can't get to any of my more expensive knives. Being a knife guy I have TONS of very good knives and for sure would try to always have one or more of them with me, but these will be there as a back up no matter what. Great knives!!

Say Heah Aaron, I keep coming back and seeing this video again on occasion, I did buy a Mora 510, The new 510 is a little thinner than the original but I really like it better. I also bought the Classic #1. Browsing through the Mora Knives I found a decent deal on a Mora 2000 and the Mora Hatchet for a decent price. But to get that decent price, it's only on the orange color. I also bought the Morakniv Forest Exclusive #277 what a beauty with the laminated blade (4") But because I qualified for the free shipping so I bouggt the green version for $5.00+ more. I also bought the Bacho Laplander to complete my ultra lite trio. The Laplander also comes in the orange. Today was like a Christmas in April, I got my Swamp Rat RatWeiler and what a chunk of SR101 Steel, Simply TiT's, Beautiful, defenetly a "Sharp Prybar" in a true sence. I should be getting my Mora's very soon, can't wait.

My Mora 511 stainless steel knife was very sharp out of the box. If was sharper than my Mora Robust out of the box. But then again the 511 is a thinner blade so that probably makes a difference. I got 3 knives for $28 from Amazon. I'm not bushcrafting or going out into the woods, just everyday use and in my tool bag. If the sheath is too loose, just run a blow dryer on the hot setting over the upper part of the sheath for about a minute or two then compress it a little and run it under cold water. Now the knife will be very secure in the sheath. Love these Mora knives.

Great video about a great little knife. You simply cannot beat Mora when it comes to the performance vs price ratio. Only thing I don't agree with is that they feel cheap, that's not true. A cheap knife feels flimsy, has hot spots and provides very little to no protection to the user. Pretty much all Moras have a very comfortable handle that's gripy, safe, practical and solid. The Mora Robust is a great example. As soon as you grab it you know that knife can take some abuse and it's so comfortable it's ridiculous.

gideontactical, I've heard about Moras for years and finally just received one. You are absolutely right about these little 511's. Outstanding little critter, despite the Kmart price. The one I have is carbon Craftline. Thing shipped sharp as hell. Fits hand good and holds it's edge. If you use a knife for cutting, which is a knife's intended purpose, then I think it would survive, with proper care, beyond my lifetime. I've deboned several deer in my life and can't see using anything beyond a 511 for that purpose or for whittling wood. Great review. Thanks.

Got a companion SS blade and I absolutely love it as, well, a companion/secondary knife. I never had a Mora knife so when I got it and realized how light it was, I quickly determined that it was best for my system as a light, food prep knife. I know this thing can take a beating but I'll leave the heavy chopping and batoning to my BK7. That being said, I wish the companion was a thinner blade for slicing. I am, however, confused to why you say SS for food prep and CS for feathersticks. CS is on a lot of premium kitchen cutlery, can I ask why you prefer one over the other?

I already have a mora companion inox, a huge Becker bk 2, but I just bought this one juste to throw it in a kit because of the price and the reliability! It's great. If the 'hooked' handle on the 511 is a problem for anyone, the Mora 510 has a similar blade and retail price but doesn't have the hooked handle. The 510 is a leaner, even handier knife.
Sheath retention of the 510 is terrible though but can be improved by adding a shock cord loop in the belt loop.

I own many Mora's and like them all a lot. This new version looks pretty cool, but I probably won't be getting one very soon unless I happen to walk into a store and see one that I can handle. Just an FYI, the original 511 does have a small "hook" at the back of the handle although not as pronounced as this new model. You didn't mention the spine and if it can throw sparks from a ferro-rod or not. I've modded all of mine to do that by taking them to the grinder and putting a 90-degree edge on them. Thanks for the video & it was good to see Mrs.G-T even though it was for the briefest of moments! LoL

The hook on the back of the handle is a classic scandi design for cold weather use where you are pulling in the knife to have a pull cut not a push cut
The pull cut is much much safer type of cut, where your hand can never slip onto the blade
You see the hook handle on many many scandi knives without the front guard

The old version of the 511 was my first Mora. I still have it and it's still in a go bag, because it's guaranteed quality. Cost me $8. You can't beat that with a stick.

I actually got myself one of these the other day after watching this review. In Sweden you can get two of them for that price, so there is no reason not to have one of these when you're out in the woods. It's also a very good backup to a larger knife.

I got mine for 8 bucks a couple years ago on amazon. Its about 11 dollars at amazon today. Better edge retention than most 1095 steel stuff I've had. Wish I bought 5 of em.

Mora's steel is pretty close to 1095, but they have excellent heat treats compared to pretty much any other value knife.

"...the performance to price point is phenomenal..." I agree. I have bought it for 5.50 є (in Slovakia), the price as Chine (of course, China can create quality things if it wants, but I got strange things in majority until), quality as Sweden, especially the steel! I asked a shopman for the cheapest knife for my garage work (to stripping cables) and I got the too sharp solid knife. Of course it is too dangerous knife for cable stripping (I could cut myself), however it is the great knife for woodcarving.

2020 and still an awesome review. Great camera work, great narration, and most of the info people need to know. Thank you. Me? I need another knife less than I need a hole in my head. I've got knives. But Christmas 2020 - If you search properly, Amazon is running some great sales on the 511 and Companion series. I bought 4. For ME. Merry Christmas! I got a Carbon Steel 511 for $9.99 and a Morakniv Craftline Pro S Sandvik Stainless for $11. Plus TWO Companions for $15 each ( different colors = different prices. And don't judge my pink knife. I carried a camo knife ONCE into the woods. And dropped it on my foot. I didn't move. 20 minutes later I found it. That's why Hunter Orange knives are so much higher. Because smart people will pay $5 more to find their knives in the woods. I paid less for Pink and unless I'm tripping in the woods, pink should stand out well).

I feel you on the handle poking you in the hand. I may be the only one out there, but I honestly don't like the handle on the bushcraft black. The little finger groove that comes to a point gets in the way and pokes my middle finger when I choke up a bit higher on the knife for detail work. I can use it without choking up as much and it feels fine, but to make it perfect for me I'd take the handle without the little groove. I do have hands on the smaller side so that could be why. Great review on the mora!
p.s. The robust looks like a good skinner with the upsweep and belly.

Got it in the mail today
Update: I decided to purchase a kydex sheath for this knife because mine became too loose and as wobbling around in the sheath.
I still have the original sheath and might try and fix it with a heat gun.
