The Jacobite: Britain's Best Train Journey (4K)

  • The only word I could think of to describe this journey was simply, breathtaking. We were very lucky with the weather in July (2018) and as such the backdrop to the 42-mile journey was indeed breathtaking. Harry Potter fans will immediately identify the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which come up about half way along the route. If you want to see the Highlands in all their glory, this is the way to do it. Filmed in 4K on an iPhone 7+. Runtime 7 min 32 secs. Copyright (c) Mike Smith, Two Minute Heroes. 26 July 2018

I remember doing this trip many times as a boy in the 60's hanging out the windows, eyes full of grit..!!
Taking the train from Fort William to Mallaig, and then the MV "Loch Seaforth" to Kyle of Lochalsh. Class K1 61997 'MacCailin Mor' was always a favourite to haul the train. ;-)

My wife and I took the Jacobite in October, 2012, and enjoyed it immensely. It was the first time I had ever been on a steam train, so it was quite the experience.
My wife is about 1/2 Scot in ancestry, so she really got a kick out of our trip. We may get back in the future, when she want to go to Skye, the Orkneys, and maybe the Shetlands. Time will tell.

What a spectacular train ride? And, that curved viaduct is a marvel to behold of fantastic, elegant redbrick built Victorian engineering in its simplicity in traversing the rugged terrain. You just have that sense that the designer of the viaduct of the time thought 'we can do this, no problem, with my brick-laying lads'. Is there any documentation on viaduct building one asks? Many thanks for a great video train ride.

Honeymoon began on night train from London to Edinburgh...sleeper with one up one down bunks! Spent time at Oban and travelled from Fort William to Mallaig for a trip to Skye. Mid June and the weather was wet for the whole time but nevertheless we did enjoy. Don't think it was called the Jacobite back then. First of my many mistakes in life.......married on the longest day and shortest night , and then a sleeper with single bunks for the first night.....but a man's a man for a' that!! We just did this on the 25th of August 2021. When you do this journey just be prepared as there will likely be a lot of irritating and rude people on the train and you unfortunately will have to be a bit pushy to see the viaduct if that is what you are most interested in. We had this couple beside us in the front first class carriage who spent most of the time standing taking photos of each other and when a good view would come up the guy blocked the whole window with his body so he could get a photo with no regard to anyone else in the area. He was acting like an excited ten year old despite being in his 60’s. Nothing wrong with excitement but it shouldn’t impact other passengers. My wife missed the viaduct on the way out but got the best video you could possibly get on the way back. We are very polite so almost missed out so just be prepared for this. The staff are lovely but not too sure it’s worth the £200 we paid for our tickets as I think it was an extra £60 for first class. It is worth making the journey and the first class carriages are nice and old fashioned but you get the same experience in all carriages I’m sure.
