What do you think of the Jacobite Steam Train?

  • @DAZSAVENTURESINWONDERLAND

I went on 1st class the beginning of may, we were given a complimentary box containing sweets and biscuits , but I think that was given due to the new rules in place "no standing by the doors ,heavily enforced " so not allowed to take photos from the door windows ,still a great trip though ,and well worth doing

My own personal experience of this line was somewhat more hectic. Staying on the southern tip of Skye I decided to try and take the ferry over to Malaig, take the train to fort William, try to climb Ben Nevis, and come back in a day. Turns out it was not possible, I abandoned 2/3rds of the way up for fear of missing the last train and ferry. Still what a line this is!

    • @WorldWide_Dom
      @WorldWide_Dom  Před 4 měsíci

the trains and ferry's don't match up very well in that part of Scotland sadly, which is strange as the Ferries line up almost perfectly on the Thurso to Stromness leg and the Far north Line. I have always said there should be more use of a hub type model for both Oban and Mallaig in regard to ferry and rail transportation and in the case of Oban: ferry, rail, and air.

First is usually worth it on these kind of trips. You don't stop to think about it too much because its not like regular travel but rather an experience, so maximise the fun.
Make a mental note for future : Its particularly important to choose first class on the narrow gauge railways of north Wales ( Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Railway ) because the experience isn't just a bigger seat in a similar cabin. You get observation cars, with arm chairs and snacks/alcohol service. Its night and day difference. I can see you doing this some day so remember this advice to maximise your fun and your video interest.

Absolutely stunning scenery, I live in Inverness, I know I could get the Citylink coach to Fort William then get the train to Mallaig and back, then Citylink back to Inverness.. been wanting to do this for a long time now. I love the way they get you to switch seats on the return journey so you get the scenery on other side of the train. Seemed well thought out

What gorgeous views!! I'm a bit divided on wanting to take the Harry Potter train (my husband didn't read the books or see the movie so he had no idea about the train...LOL) and deal with the crowds. We loved going on the Strathspey steam train. I think we'll probably aim to the West Highland Line next after seeing your and a few others' videos plus other journeys. Thanks for taking us along! Yet every other operator of heritage stock on the mainline has been able to comply with these regulations. These are not new and west coast railways warned about this previously and have chosen to ignore the requirements that they needed to comply with.
North York Moors railway with its run into Whitby has been able to comply, Vintage Trains with the Shakespeare express has been able to comply.
If they can do it then 100% there is absolutely NO excuse for West Coast to have not been able to plan to have Central Door Locking for the, coaching stock.

    LONGER STOP
Mallaig would benefit from a stop longer than 1 hour.........and, given it's remote location, the station would benefit from the restoration of a platform length canopy.
It is surprising that the authorities, both local and national, have not given more thought about restoring Mallaig Station to the grandeur that it once had.
A turntable at Mallaig would also make sense......
Unsure which coaching stock is currently in use on 'The Jacobite' (May, 2024)...
The Mark 1's are superb and make perfect sense.
Not so sure about being hermetically-sealed in other coaching stock.....
    James Hennighan
    Yorkshire, England
    P.S.
The so-called 'Locking' of doors on Mark 1's is an administrative and beaurocratic nonsense, with WCR getting the sharp end of an unnecessary stick from 'Officialdom'
Mark 1 Coach Doors .....and particularly the Locking Mechanisms, are perfectly safe. They were designed to be this way and work as a two-step operating function. They cannot open accidentally.
