Lando Norris is rapid, intelligent and decisive when he races - and he seems to be able to make any car go fast. But what was his driving style like when he was 8? Does it show signs of the driver he is now?
Lando started karting when he was 7, and competed in Comer Cadet karting. But, Lando actually wasn’t much of a Formula 1 fan - he actually said he much preferred Moto GP and was a massive Valentino Rossi fan.
Lando went STRAIGHT into National karting, in the Super 1 championship - but took a couple of years to build up and develop before he was achieving top results.
And Lando said himself, he wasn't a success straight away.

Don't see why he gets called overrated. In 2021 he was insane, fighting perez and bottas in the championship when he's in a much worse car than both. In 2022 he got the only podium out of anyone outside the top 3 teams. This year he's had back to back podiums and many great quali sessions. He's definitely got potential, same with Oscar. I'm excited to see how far they can both push mclaren. Also seem to have good relationships between eachother.

Even with your recent videos on advantages of smoother understeery driving styles I still don't understand how AP was so fast in an era where oversteery driving styles and/or "wrestling the car in submission" generally seemed to be the way to go and more importantly HOW he was able to make his car turn in situations where everyone else would find the cars being undriveable due to too much understeer?

The answer that is most often forgotten with Prost: setup and work outside the car. He didn't get his nickname "the professor" for nothing. He worked hard to create a car that was naturally fast and then drove it conservatively--to incredible success. He may not have been the fastest driver in history, and he struggled in the wet. But, he routinely outsmarted Senna, Mansell, Piquet, Lauda, and even a young Schumacher. He is my personal best driver of the 80s.

Ask yourselves a question. If you're in your 20s, 30s or older, how much do you actually remember from when you were 7 years old. Aside from that one guy who is going to say, 'I remember every single meal from when I was 2 years old, don't you?' most of us probably only remember the highlights. 7 is such a young formative age. We were learning to use the language in written format and maybe even still had problems tying our shoes. Also, when do most of us begin learning to drive a car? In the US maybe 15? Lando and these drivers have been driving racing cars from an age that they will not even remember most of the things from that age. Not just driving, but competing against other high quality drivers. It's funny when they ask Lando questions about broader subjects and he doesn't know the answer, but think about what that implies. All his life force for all his years- even back before he properly remembers- has been applied only to racing cars.
For all those people out there who say, 'Yeah, well anybody could win in a Red Bull...' Nah. Yeah, another good F1 driver could, but not you or me.

I admit it’s a faux pas to ask but it would be interesting to hear how you stack yourself up against these drivers. We know you are talented, but there’s talented, and then there is F1 talented. F1 is Maybe more selective than any other sport on the planet.
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on what separates the few who are so lucky to have a seat

In F1 they add ballast to the cockpit under the seat if the driver doesn't weigh at least 80kg to make up for any weight advantage.
