Max Verstappen has been karting since he was 4, and been winning ever since. But what was his driving style like? And how has it developed over the years to the point where he’s won two World Championships?
Well Max was actually driving before he was 4, his Dad put him on a quad bike.

And that is a key thing here - Max’s dad is Jos Verstappen, an Ex-F1 driver. And his Mum Sophie Kumpen who karted with the likes of Jenson Button and Jarno Trulli.
So he must have strong racing DNA, but also - his dad brought him up racing. Both in the paddock of F1 tracks and at the karting track - so he was raised to be a winner.

You see it with artists also. Charlie Parker did practice a ridiculous amount of time but the man's brain was literally on a different frequency. He conceived of an entire musical language that had never been done before.
Max was recently in the 24HR Nurburgring sim race. He was consistently 2-5 seconds a lap faster a lap then the best sim drivers in the world.
Better than the sim-only drivers. Max is arguably one of the best sim racers in the world.
This is a racing robot, it is inevitable that he will become the greatest racing driver of all time. And I’m a big Schumacher enthusiast

@@scotchwhile214 i dunno the numnber have been looking pretty solid over the last 5 years or so. He defionitely has a solid chance with how many years he has left in this sport.
I think it was in Brazil a few years ago, in the wet and behind the safety car and I realised Max wasnt following everyone else. He'd was looking for how grippy the track was off the racing line while still at safety car speed. Once the race got a green flag he was passing everybody where he knew there was grip....even a somewhat surprised Vettel. He was a driver thinking ahead not just (literally) following the crowd.
The point where I became a fan of him. The guy is a machine.
If you have F1TV you have to watch this year's Miami GP from his view. He's almost continuously talking with his race engineer, looking for an edge here or a weakness there. Several times they sent him new configurations during the race, "to try out." He and his engineer never stopped talking and experimenting the entire race. They probably communicate 5x as much as other drivers. It was fascinating!
Yeah it was Brazil 2016. Such a masterclass race from him. I think a lot of people were thinking what the hell is he doing, but he was indeed trying out different lines and seeing where the grip was. It was amazing seeing such a young driver schooling some of the best and experienced.
The reason is very obvious the toxix British domination of F1 coverage. Anyone who is not British wiol get sloughtered. Meqnahile Hamilton always got a free rid in the fastest car. Verstappen is not one but several levels above Hamilton in every aspect of racingl Yet he will NEVER get even remotely the same appreciation by the British dominated F1 press. British press are really toxic and sad.
When he saved the car in this race from crashing on the straight I knew he was special. I still don’t know how he kept the car out of the walls
I think Max's biggest point is that not only did he have a racing upbringing and is talented but that he actually ALSO likes racing and motorsports. Not all drivers love racing.
I wouldn't put it that way. Every driver loves racing and competition. They just don't use all the free time to go racing like Max does. Even footballers, NBA stars and top tennis players have other hobbies. Max thinks about racing 24/7 that's very unique and different.
For some others, it's more like a hobby so they don't reall hav to do it if the do wa to obvio....

I rather dislike Verstappen both on and off the track, but a god-like car with a bad driver wouldn't be winning (dominating, really) like Verstappen's done the last few years. I have plenty of negative descriptors to use for Verstappen (and his father), but I'd have to be totally delusional to count "bad driver" among them.
Max is just a once in a hundered years driver. He is something special. There are a lot of people that do not like him, but his talent is unmatched. He already is a great champion and will be even more so in the near future.

If you watch Max driving, also back in the days when the Mercs were untouchable and he didnt win, you could see his unbelievable talent. Let‘s see how his career develops, but from what we‘ve seen from him so far, i think it is okay to say that he is somewhere up there with the very best of this sport. Let‘s enjoy this driver as long as we can
Nah. Unmatched exactly why? Every generation have at least a phenom and Max is just the one of the last gen. I've heard the same for decades, I've seen Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton and now Max. Different drivers for different eras, that's it.

watching Max's movements on the wheel in that Formula Renault reminded me of Senna, the way he dances with the wheel. Not a massive Max fan but his incredible talent is undeniable.
senna was much rougher. max is comparatively smooth. not prost-like, but smooth nonetheless. this is also probably the reason why his tyres last so long

@@realdaddydagoth69 A driver like Senna obviously had to be rougher because the cars weren't as refined back then. The closest we got to see of Senna driving in a more "modern" fashion (as far as his steering inputs are concerned) was when he was tardwrangling the Williams.

Max is just from another universe. He can drive with closed eyes and still be faster than anyone. First after Senna and Schumaher who is a joy to watch how he drive.

Fernando also had 2 world championships when he was at Max's age, 25. Max had more problems with his car overall than Alonso did when he won, and only a great driver can turn the outcome in his favor like Max did. Max was the underdog in the battle for his first title, while Alonso was leading in the standings till Schumacher began to come closer and closer and have a battle to remember with Alonso. But Max's stats show why his talent would eventually open the door for multiple WDCs, like the first youngest driver to win a GP in his DEBUT for RB, and the incredible evolution in the 2016 Brazil GP on the rain, showing that this kid's skills and courage are umatched so far. When Max will retire, his resume will be by far the greatest of all times, even though my favorites will forever remain Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. But Max is made of the same cloth with those legends, while Alonso is a brilliant driver, but he doesn't have that killer instinct, and history shows it in many ocasions.
His mum was incredible in a kart. She was a factory driver for years in Formula A, Formula Super A and Formula K. This is against guys like Trulli, Pantano, Gianniberti etc.
His mum raced against Christian Horner and beaten him ... no joke! ... He admitted that later too!
I genuinely think that Jos may have helped to mold Max, but Max’ innate talent and instinct actually comes from his mum.
I’m old enough to remember Jos racing and he wasn’t that great. I mean, on an instinctive level…the level that’s in the blood, if you will. His mother could have been great, but she had to stop racing to bear children, which I’m sure she would never take back…just saying, it’s more difficult for women because of the biological necessity to, you know, not race when bearing a child.
I remember one of the drivers she raced against speaking of Sophie (I don’t remember who) and he said that she seemed to race purely on instinct and was very aggressive and would never back down.
Sounds like a boy we know.
@@mamavswild Ehh, Jos was still really good, his rise to F1 was rather similar to Max's and had a great karting career too. Jos definitely was mediocre F1 driver, but he was also really good in the rain.

Yes, i watch also his sim racing. And this still young man has so much talent and feeling anything with 4 wheels. On the sim hee can choose any category any type of car and sweeps the whole field against the best sim drivers in the world. I can't see any of the current or former F1 drivers doing this. And i am sure he can choose any category in real life racing, he will adapt quickly and also win in that category.
Max's ability to drive in the wet is unmatched, his incredible skill makes it look like he's driving in the dry and it's fun to watch!

Ruthless, and to my mind, unfair. He drives as a bully; not as a craftsman. It may make for exciting racing and even win races but it is so crude I refuse to endorse him as a talented driver. If Max is unwilling to show respect for his fellow drivers by simply forcing them off the road, than he should be shunned and find a venue where he is forced to drive alone. Timed events like rallying or drag racing. Why is he tolerated? Because he gets results, despite the carnage. I would like to see him banned for being an unethical driver and should not be embraced as a decent representative of the sport.

@@likilikiki no they wouldn’t. Most of the guys in the 80’s had tens of thousands of hours of practice using three pedals and a manual transmission. How many hours do the drivers of today spend using that type of car? The answer is, nowhere near enough. Sure, they’d be able to adapt quickly and be significantly fast, but nowhere near someone who’s been doing that and only that, their whole life.

@@souldry it's just a transmission... given that these are modern f1 drivers who train like crazy, even if they didn't already know how to manual, they'd get it down VERY quickly... heel toeing is not rocket science.
Max caught my attention in the Formula 3 series specially, I then took very close look at his career so far and realized how big talent he is. I tend to try scouting those rising talents from lower formula classes yet his style reminded me of some of the best F1 drivers ever seen (started following F1 in 1997).
The only guy that could put a solid gap between young Max and himself was Jos on that highway.
But Jos cheated because Max didn't have a car.

I always know Max is very talented. You know when you see a talented driver when he can just bring more speed and better lap times even in a crappy car and/or under rainy conditions.
Michael Schumacher is one of those generational talent that no one could even come close to. Now I see Max is the current generation talent that no one could even come close to. The only person who can slow him down is himself - what I'm saying is his motivation to drop because, example, too many races in a season.
He understands braking and acceleration like no ond else. The momentum he carries is a work of art
Max is already in the top 10 best F1 drivers of all time list. I follow F1 since 1975 so I think I know a bit what I am talking about.

He‘s already top 5 and top 3 when it comes to talent and ability.
He's already in top 5, just like types such as Federer, Nadal or Messi were in their respective sports relatively early on in their career, regardless of titles. All these guys have the ability to be winners by age 18-21.
Based on driving ability, I cannot name 5 names who are better, so I would also argue he already is top 5 of all time. I didn’t see Hamilton or Schumacher do things Verstappen is not able to do, let’s put it that way. The average sporting fan will tell you that he does not have the statistics (yet) to be compared, fair enough I guess. But in my opinion that is not how you determine greatness in a sport with so many influential factors. For me personately, he is the most complete driver I have seen, he is like a robot. It does not matter where he starts, or in what condition, he will consistently be a threat for the win. Emotionally for me Schumacher is the greatest, give it a few more years and rationally it will be Verstappen.

Like in this year's Miami GP where he kept calm and overtook Leclerc and Magnussen (?) later on.
With extra years, Verstappen is likely going to be Alonso on steroids, can't wait to see that happen.
Scott, would you be so kind to explain in a future video, how Max's style works to keep his tyres alive on-par with Sergio, please? This is something I (and I guess many people) can't quite figure out. If someone would have an answer or at least an educated guess, that would be you.

@@bmxerqf882 Yet his steering inputs, throttle and braking are sharper than Sergio's, which is what baffles me. Granted, Perez is obviously not that comfortable with the car, which is suited more or less to Max's liking, but still. I wanna see Scott diving deep on this one, as I'm sure he'll find something interesting.
I think it also has to do with Max being an early braker, so he is less agressive on the tires and therefore can take more speed out of the corner without destroying his tires. His style of driving is just different then the rest of the grid. No one drivers with that much pointy front as he does. And as mentioned he dances with his stearingwheel a lot but always smooth. And because he feels what the tires are going to do he can anticipate any slip that would come.
You seldem see him missing a corner and smoking his tires. That prolongues his tire life.

@@extreme8808 This years car isn't more to Max's liking. RB have found a middle ground for them both. In the beginning of last year the car was actually not to Max's liking at all and suited Perez more.

Once in a generation talent for sure. He's driven so much that its second nature to him.
Always wonder what kind of crazy talent they could find if motorsports didn’t have such a crazy financial barrier.
Visit local tracks and back roads and you can see it without such barriers. There is a race for every class, any kind of car you can imagine. Sending a 15 year old Miata at full throttle doesn't cost much, and you can seriously hone your skills without fear of constant death. It is nearly as difficult to push a slower, less refined vehicle to the edge as an F1 car. No doubt, your reflexes and instinct, muscle memory must be absolute going 180 mph. But first, you learn slowly, build your skill, and speed will come. There are no shortage of talented, passionate, and highly skilled drivers all over the world. You have to work a little to find them rather than just flip on a television, and if it's important to you, than what's a little travel or some research?
@@philbert006 you should look into dirt racing like sprint cars, 600 micros and midgets. I’ve raced Asphalt and dirt for many years and dirt will always be my favorite
@@TreeHarmony I love dirt track. I worked at the dirt track at Memphis Motorsports Park for a long time. The last race series I worked was the Busch series NASCAR race, stacker 2 world of outlaws series both on the same weekend. The NASCAR drivers came out and drove a race in the world of outlaws super modified, there were topless sprint cars (talk about rowdy, damn!) The local guys that kind of won all the time got to go out and drove with the world of outlaws classes. It was a fantastic weekend!
@@philbert006 hell yeah man we had a very similar deal when the world of outlaws came to skagit speedway, where they’d also let local guys run with the outlaws. A good amount of nascar guys run on dirt occasionally, I saw Kyle Busch at the Tulsa shootout this last year racing a micro and Kevin swindell has his own team that has been pretty dominant they have brought up some damn good drivers like cbell.

in my country, getting a miata is equivalent to a decade of rent. A computer with wheels pedals and shifters on the other hand, is actually possible for a lot of people

Max is the most talented driver on the current F1 grid. He could be the love child of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. How he was immediately fast in the Toro Rosso at that age given only a limited amount of races in formula cars is truly astonishing!!

While Max's recent dominance in F1 has left people wondering how much of his success is owed to his car, his raw talent is undeniable.
1:50 is a text book competitive karting pass. TaG, Rotax, 125 shifter/KZ/, allllll the same moves. Even today, he drives F1 likes its a Kart. Front heavy is textbook karting. All about energy retention and the drive out of the corner. No diff, low on power high grip. Late brake and drive through the corner to get the jump on the exit.
You can really see how Jos Verstappen taught him well.
Verstappen Sr. himself was quite talented, making Schumacher question how the *hell* he was able to still keep up with everyone somewhat in the absolute disaster that was the second Benneton car. And don't forget that Jos Verstappen was one of, if not *the* best Rain driver at the time he drove in F1, being able to keep behind Schumacher and his Ferrari while he was driving an Arrows in Malaysia 2001, and finishing in 5th in Canada in 2000.
I saw them both in Franco Champs Belgium 1993-94 when I recall right Schumacher 1 and Jos second.
@eco logic 1994, Schumacher won and Verstappen came in 4th behind Damon Hill and Häkkinen, Schumacher got disqualified though so Verstappen moved up to 3rd

@@Reaz399 I think he's better. I see Max Verstappen as Schumacher 2.0 or Senna 3.0 if we see Michael as an evolution of Ayrton (as I see). I think Senna raised the bar back then in the 80's, where drivers had a more gentleman-like, saving machine approach, when the likes of Lauda, Stewart and then Prost would dominate. Senna then breaks with this.
He points out to a new style in which he would always extract the maximum of the car, always in the limit, and sometimes a bit over it. Maybe he did it a bit too soon back in the 80's as that would plague him with reliability at Lotus and later on battling Prost in McLaren, but he definitely pointed out the direction in which the sport was going.
Then came Schumacher and raised the bar even higher. Not only extremely gifted and just as ruthless as Senna, but he also conjugated the more analytical and calculated style of Lauda and Prost with it, + raising the level of fitness and professionalism, thus setting a new standard, in a way being Senna 2.0.
And in my opinion only now then we have a new standard being set with Max. Don't get me wrong, we had great drivers since Schumacher, whether it's Alonso, Raikkonen, Vettel or the most accomplished of them: Hamilton. But none of these in my eyes have set a new standard in racing, but rather replicated somehow the standard previously established by Michael, particularly Vettel and Hamilton.
Max though finally has set a new standard: the driver now not only must be extremely gifted and ruthless, plus super professional, calculated and athletic, but also must be full time into racing, using Racing Sims to practice and improve its skills and knowledge whenever he can, always been more prepared for every new track and condition in advance, with hundreds or even thousands of hours practicing in highly realistic simulators.
That's how I see how Max differs from the previous generation of greats, and how he establishes himself a new standard, in a way that he can be seen as Schumacher 2.0 or Senna 3.0.

We will never find a definitive and objective answer who is better. Instead, we should enjoy their skill on the track and be happy to be able to whitness such insanely talented drivers.
I really wonder how much those simulators actually do for a professional racing driver. I suspect much less than you make it out to be.
As if Schumacher was not full-time into racing? You might not know or forgot, but in Schumachers era were almost no regulations for testing. In other words: unlimited testing with the real cars! Which Schumacher did more than any other driver as far as media tells us. He was well known for his insane work ethic. Real life testing with the actual car has, without a doubt, significantly more value than any simulator.
EDIT: and if using a simulator to improve as a driver is the ''new standard'' then Max is certainly not the one who introduced it to the F1 world. Simulators are used since 2 decades or close to 2 decades. Sure, the first ones are not so realistic, but still, it is certainly nothing new.

You missed the point. It isn't simply simulators alone, combining real world racing with Sim racing, as many others do, and have done before Max. The Sim racing point is only a thing because of the level he's performing, the results he's beeb delivering in Grand Prix Racing. Not only displaying the traits we first saw in F1 (successfully) found in Senna, but then also Schumacher, and on top of that the Sim racing stuff.

saw him driving in Wackersdorf at the european or world championship. To that time he raced for Intrepid in OK Junior und was leading all the heats and was aggressive always at the beginning and managing the race afterwards. For me was clear that he'll go to F1 for sure.
This should be pretty much the same reflexes that made Kimi so fast in his younger years (and to some extent Ronnie Peterson, and I bet a bunch of others). This was kind of hard for Kimi to keep at the same height all his career as he grew older, I wonder if the same will be true for Max.
A legend the sheer definition of "born to win" his whole F1 career really makes sense.

His worst day was better than my best day growing up. He had parents that loved and care for him and guided him through life.
If you feel thats trauma the real world is going to eat you alive.

He always said that if you have a car that is dominating, then your driving style is different. If your car has a disadvantage, then you need to take more risk.
He has established himself as a dirty driver so can appear calmer as his reputation precedes him. Other drivers know from experience that if he is behind them, they must modify their racing line to guard against his crashing through the corner and taking them out. That means they must drive defensibly and not drive their best race. It that right? It's not good for the sport, that's for sure!
@@nicovanos this doesn’t apply to junior formula and karting. He was always super aggressive and always willing to touch or make contact. This continued when he came to F1. Lewis was the only one willing to do the same as Max after a while.
Charles is like Max’s bit@h because he won’t do what Lewis was willing to do. And that’s why we can’t have any entertainment last year or this year. Just a one man championship.

Max is phenomenal. Even though I am a massive Lewis fan, Max as a talent and driver is irresistible; he's on a quick path to all time greatness. It's just too bad for him (and LH) that current cars are so bland an uninspiring. I'd love to see him in full attack on cars with limited electronics. Form the current crop, only him and LH have the talent to succeed throughout different generations.
For me, Max is the greatest driver of all time. His vision, understanding of the track and the ability to BECOME the car are a once in a lifetime.
He is up there with the greats that's for sure. although I think Sebastien Loeb takes that ultimate prize for me :)

OMG!!!!! when I saw the Formula Renault steering inputs I gasped... it was like watching one of my onboard replays in iRacing after I got the fanatec wheel (with the logitech I couldn't do that) Of course Max is on another level but still I never saw anyone else until now with the same style and preferences... Of course I was doing that in an MX-5 in the sim and in real life with a Galant VR4 and a Starion, not in a Formula 1 car

I wish someone like Netflix would do a documentary on max from the start until now. To show the people what he's achieved through his life so far. DTS painted a different picture of the F1 lives which has caused so much animosity on social media. This man lives and breaths racing, yes he's got a quick car atm but in reality he's actually very talented. People don't know but he is a purpose built racer from the day he was born and that in itself is something which has gone unnoticed. It's one of them if you know, you know type of deals with max atm

Missed opportunity to show that incredible 2015 (correction: it was the *2016* race!) Brazilian GP "drift-save" which, as was explained back then, was a real karting move.
His rear end stepped out, in the rain, coming onto the main straight. He deliberately locked up all 4 tires and since the rears are wider, they have more drag, so the nose of the car got back in front. He let off the brakes at precisely the right time and managed to avoid the barrier. It was an amazing save!

I've watched F1 for decades, Shumi was my all time hero. But Max is something else. Perhaps the greatest F1 driver? He's simply a BEAST.
There's definitely been a few drivers of Max's caliber over the years. It's difficult to compare them with how much the cars have changed, but there's been a few who stand out above the rest over their respective eras. Max looks particularly outstanding because he's racing Checo, and the rest of the field are miles behind. It'd be different with Hamilton, Russel or Alonso in that seat because they'd be neck and neck. He's definitely among the best of all time, but putting him alongside Schumi in a ferrari, or Senna in a McLaren, or even say Lauda or Fangio in their cars during those eras might've changed our view. Recency bias plays a big part, don't forget how Schumi and others were just as unstoppable as Max is right now.
@@michaelfortier7726 I think this is quite wrong. Checo is just another one in a large lineup of teammates who Max has aced. Only Sainz in 2015 and Ricciardo in 2017 were a challenge. In all of the other seasons, Max was the boss.

He’s literally like Dexter, but instead of harnessing his psychopathy for murdering other murderers he uses it to destroy every other driver on the grid.
He's no Dexter. Dexter knew to get off clean. Max is talented but reckless and filthy. He didn't get the nickname Crashtappen by accident and some of his antics have been the worst purposeful crashes in F1 history - and he has multiple of them them on his resume. MULTIPLE. In any other sane era of F1 he would have been suspended or even has his Super License revoked a year.
The way Max drives when he's in aggressive mode and behind can quickly turn from skill to "either get out of my way or I'll crash us both out" lunacy, and that fact is born witness by his leading all F1 drivers in career penalty points at 32 pts, a massive margin to anyone in the field, and did it all in only 8 seasons.

And the only purposeful crash max was involved in was Lewis throwing him in the wall at Silverstone.

There is more than a drivers championship at stake; there is also a manufacturers championship at stake. The driver is supposed to bring out the best in the car, not make it about himself. To rise at the expense of others on track completely betrays the teams efforts as well as the spirit of the series itself. I have no stake in liking or hating Max. It's his way of doing business on track I am offended by.

If Mercedes manage to get Max, so much would have change. Red Bull really took a huge risk with Max, but it payed off.

I was at hit first race in karting when he was just 7 years old. He blew away the entire field every heat race and final.
Verstappen is one of the greatest drivers F1 has ever seen. But we have to be honest, he must be grateful that he had to two parents that were elite drivers that gave him the motivation, resource and advice he needed to succeed.
Jos was close to abusive, sure it helps having a dad that got into F1 and a mom that probably could have given support as well, but I wouldn't give Jos too much credit

I remember back in like 2014 around the time Max was testing for Toro Rosso, I was watching some of the older karting clips of him on you tube, and there was some pro karter in the comments that was a bit older already at the time, and he said that hes whole life hes never seen a better kart driver than this guy, referring to Max, saying how hes feeling the car and pushing the limit hes never seen anyone ever do. He also said hes hest the best kart driver hes seen since Artyon Senna.
