25 gbp per hour? It must be a work from home position. I'm not from the UK and I'm also doing maintenance but I'm not as heavy on industrial as you ( not a complete house basher either). What I usually did was throw money at the career and even when I was employed I did as good as job as I could. Many ex employers became customers and built word of mouth. If you have the means to pull people out of trouble you will be appreciated. The thing is that working alone is not very lucrative (my situation as well), you can only sell your own labor up to a point. This is why people that have employees and do house bashing and repetitive jobs are better off financially. From what I understand there is a massive problem in the UK due to those recruiting agencies that keep bringing cheap labor over and large companies sucking the market dry.
