Slow down, take smaller steps, break in new heels around the house before the day you intend to wear them outside. And of course, heel-toe, heel-toe. But *the* most important thing to remember: take smaller steps. I say this as a 39 year old Londoner who wears heels to work every day, my mother from London always wore heels to the office every day and her mother who was a hair dresser working in London wearing heels to work every day. Same advice I've given to my daughter wearing heels to events starting 13.

I find it becomes less painful overtime. I think the pain is always there, but it is something your body gets used to. If you get good quality shoes, they are usually less painful because the insole has padding and is usually leather. If you want to wear stilettos, having a platform also helps with pain.

I ran a shoe store for 8 years and the "after 5pm rule" is spot on . I told that to people constantly ! Buy shoe when your feet are swollen from the day. And if you can, ALWAYS buy a 1/2 size bigger to be able to put gel cushions on the front. As for high heels, NEVER EVER believe a sales assistant that tells you they'll stretch if they're too tight. They will never stretch enough to be comfortable !

There is also something else I noticed with high heel shoes: the sole of the shoe should not be 45 degrees from ball of the foot to the heel. It should look like you would stand on your tip toes that way the shoe will support your arch. Compare shoes from 1930s and today, look at them from the side. The 1930s shoes are much better for your feet.

AWESOME VID!! It's a nice change to see a podiatrist helping women find the RIGHT heels instead of just telling them NO HEELS EVAR!! Which is what a lot of them do. She knows that a lot of women just aren't giving them up so it's nice to see & hear how you can make them feel better.

This was possibly the best CZcams video I have seen! Thank you for the practical and helpful advice! In the past I have only been to male podiatrists and they have said women should avoid wearing heels. Since we are obviously not going to do that, it’s great to have professional input on how to address the challenges we face trying to look nice!

Watching this makes me ever so grateful for Crocs, slippers and sneakers! I never got along with high heels, even though I did manage to pull off wearing high heels all evening one day 10 years ago (almost died on the way back to hotel room though because my feet were so painful!)
Now I can’t even wear heels any longer, joints are too unstable and balance is non existent these days and I wear AFO’s as needed. But even if I could wear heels I’d rather wear Crocs! Comfort and function comes first

My feet are narrow so most typical heels won’t even stay on my feet. My toes have to grip onto 90% of shoes as well. Can’t wear pumps or flats or anything like that, I walk right out of them.

Dear Ruth, you can use heel grip pads, amazon carries them, you can either stick them on your heels or on the inner rim of the heel cup which will help you not slip out, also there are lots of strappy heels that are more supportive than pumps,. wishing you all the best
