- The Mojave Road is one of the longest continuous off-road trails in the American West. With over 130 miles of desert wilderness from the Colorado River to the Mojave River, this trail makes for an epic adventure no matter what your experience level may be in wheeling. If you’re thinking of doing the Mojave Road in your rig, watch this episode of Chasing Dust to get a better idea of what to bring with you, what there is to see, and what to expect along the journey.
Matt starts us out along the banks of the Colorado River in Laughlin, where gives us an overview of his Bronco and Sean’s Tacoma before reviewing the tools and gear they take with them on this trip. Along the way, Matt gives pointers on vehicle recommendations, tire recommendations, and things to look out for when traveling overland through the desert.
After a night of camping in the winter cold, the boys are back in the trucks and headed for Afton Canyon with nearly 100 miles of trail ahead of them. Day two brings unexpected surprises, such as a Ford Fiesta that took a wrong turn and was stuck, the Mojave Lava Tubes, the Mojave Mailbox, active railroad tracks, and an epic water crossing before finishing the trail.
If you’re interested in doing this trail, be sure to check out Matt’s personal trail map, linked below.

This might be the best Bronco Raptor video thus far, even better than the Jason Cammisa video, because these guys are doing exactly what it’s designed for. Kudos to everyone who had a hand in making this video. Thank you.
Geez...i've done that trail so much that i knew exactly where you were in every shot. That camp spot in the New York mountains is one of my favorites places out there
Gotta keep it one of the best kept secrets 😉
Great video Matt. I did the Mojave trail a few weeks ago in my bronco. Thanks for sharing!
Sick video! Mojave is such a cool trail, so much to offer. Great video and informational.
Great video, I am thoroughly enjoying your content!
Good video. The Mojave is definitely on my list. Thanks!
We just did this trail and completed it in 9hrs
Last year I ran the Mojave Road in my Mercedes GLB 4Matic when it was so new it still had paper plates and no pinstriping. We took three days and saw the sights, but we also didn’t waste time anywhere. I still had the factory tires, which meant pavement treads and highway pressures on run-flat tires, so I didn’t air down like others in my group. And there I had no spare. I was concerned that the transmission might overheat on the slower, uphill, and rocky sections, since it is a dual-plate clutch design and they tend to hate lugging, but no worries. The 4Matic worked great. Apparently, when the driving style selector says OFF ROAD, it knows what it is talking about.
My daughter lead the whole thing in her Bronco Sport, which performed admirably. The highlight for her was coming across a Jeep Gladiator with the full outfit: lifted frame on 35s, a dog in the back seat, and a Glock on the dash. The only other vehicle we encountered. It was stuck just off the trail in blow sand; the sun was setting, and there was no cell service. It had been there for some time judging by the attempts at excavation. My daughter had a rescue strap and soft shackles, so in minutes she had that Jeep back on the trail. Smirking, of course. And we did the whole Afton Canyon section.
Lol 35s, a dog and a glock.
I gotta go do this trail.
Hopefully next time we can join you guys
Great video and info. Where did you get the top handles and how did you mount them on the roof?
They’re actually from Amazon and they bolt into factory hardware points on the Bronco interior. I got two pairs for the 4 door.
I hope you guys have at least one AR-15 packed away! You never know who you could run into out there!
When driving a Ford having a Toyota is always a good idea for insurance.
Yeah it's good a garbage Toyota can be towed by ford if anywhere it gets stuck which it will
Bad idea if that Ford is a Super Car of SUVS 😆 aka the Braptor. Let me guess the Toyota Foot Joy Cruiser is going to compete with the King of the Off Road Braptor? 🙄
TRD no TRU (Toyota Racing Un-development) compared to the Braptorsaurus Rex😂😂
@@ukprince4544 all day bro!
No beadlocks?
Do the lights interfere with the camera?
Bronco raptor is hideous lol. Need to disconnect front swaybar for offroading.. you dont get thrown side to side and in a circle like 6:59.
I'd love to know what lights you've got on the modular bumper there. Looks like a nice simple setup.
It's a prototype bracket from PROJECT X with three of their HP.85's
@@desertchief5769 thanks for verifying this! I found their site and saw your truck on the product page for the HP.85s! Looks good.
I guess you also skipped the Watson Wash drop in huh? Or is that on the cutting room floor?
Our campsite in the NY Mountains was 10 miles off the main trail, and the way back to the Mojave cuts right in front of Watson Wash, so yes, we didn't get to hit it on this trip. Done it many times before, one of my favorite sections of the trail!
Those guys in their Ford Focus at 11:32 bothers me. Why did they dare to bring that hatchback to Mojave? 😶
Nice rig and great video. Side note - most Jeep owners are awesome but a few Jeep owners sure are “Karen’s” based on some comments I see on multiple threads/forums lol.
Don't worry, western Canadians make endless jokes about Wrangler owners:)
👍
Exactly how not to pack...
Bronco pro runner is better 😮
Ehh I mean cool trailer yeah but it’s not a jeep
That’s exactly why it’s cool: It’s not a Jeep. A few more years and all the “bros” will bastardize the Bronco, too.
Nope not a Jeep rather a Jeep on Steroids lmao. It makes the Jeep seem like a little buggy that rides like you on 35 inch rocks 🪨 😆
Cairn. Not Karen. Also, a good rule of thumb is to open your windows and remove your seatbelt for quick evac or extraction. Lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan about water crossings. 🥸
