- A suspenseful look at the lengths people will go to gain freedom, #BeyondUtopia follows various individuals as they attempt to flee North Korea, one of the most oppressive places on Earth, a land they grew up believing was a paradise.
At the film’s core are a mother desperate to reunite with the child she was forced to leave behind; a family of five - including small children and an elderly grandmother - embarking on a treacherous journey across the Yalu River and into the hostile mountains of China; and a man of God on a mission to help these desperate souls. Leaving their homeland is fraught with danger - severe punishment if caught and possibly even execution - as well as potential exploitation by unscrupulous brokers. Family members who remain behind also may face retribution. Yet these individuals are driven to take the risk.
Gripping, visceral, and urgent, Madeleine Gavin’s film embeds the viewer with these family members as they attempt their perilous escape, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes. The result is a singular, illuminating, and unforgettable experience.

This documentary left me speechless. I cannot fathom the level of risk and danger these people endured, and the difficulty of not only getting them to freedom but actually smuggling cameras into North Korea and filming the entire thing. Unbelievable. This should be shown in schools everywhere
I agree!
This documentary is a miracle to even exist. Literally risking their lives just to capture this on camera...
It makes me sad
@@Yurwastingyourtimewhy?
@@RaymondRAYCEare you serious? Human oppression? Meanwhile, there’s losers commenting about that the DPRK is the only true Korea. 😂 The fact that he’s not even ethnically of the peninsula/of the diaspora makes it more ridiculous.

One of the best documentaries I have ever watched. I had already read quite a few books about the situation in North Korea, but "Beyond Utopia" really hammers the truth home. A masterpiece!
It really is one of the best I’ve ever seen! What a powerful story of the real life struggles for freedom. This will quickly humble anyone in good nations.
@@actionottawa Yes!
This documentary was just heart breaking. I feel bad for the people living there and those who are just wanting to escape.
A Masterpiece -- One of the elite films of 2023. Riveting and Urgent Filmmaking!
They got me at hello. Fantastic documentary 10/10. I found myself on the edge of the seat. Best documentary of 2023. It's definitely better than 20 days in Mariupol.
Nah I wouldnt say it's better. The difference probably here is you see something you normally never see and footage that's completely new. After over 2 years people saw just very much footage out of Ukraine, so it's probably a little less special however I would say both are just really good.
This documentary is a masterpiece, 10/10
I just watched this the other day. Really good. I have followed North Korea for many yrs and familiar with stories even such as those shown in the film but it's the filming itself that blew me away. The film access while these acts are going on is incredible. Huge props to the producers, director and camera people
Very powerful documentary and very truthful.
Having just watched this gripping and fascinating trailer, I'm really looking forward to watching the full documentary when it's released. Thank you for sharing this remarkable story with the world.
One of the truly great NK documentaries, utterly heart breaking. It's up there with 'Under the Sun'. Anyone heard any updates on the women who's son was sent to the gulag?
I saw it, it was very eye opening. Definitely worth watching.
And this Pastor is a super-hero in today's world laying-down his very life for his fellow man, woman, or child.
He follows Christ's words, "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." From the Bible in John 15:13.
Evidently the Holy Spirit resides in him, otherwise how can he show such sacrificial love, as well as those supporting him?
I would leave out religion here and just leave it with him being an amazing human being.
a truly incredible film
시사회에 다녀왔습니다. 꼭 봐야할 영화입니다.
What an absolute tribute to the human spirit.
"Beyond Utopia" sounds like a description of where this movie is playing because I literally can't find it anywhere in Northeastern Illinois where I live even though it was supposed to have come out at the theaters over a week and a half ago.
Davvero interessante, spero che esca anche nei cinema italiani
I’m afraid it will be so hard to watch but I’m going to find it and watch. ❤❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Somebody mentioned it is on Amazon prime. I watched it on a Qantas plane from Brisbane to Queenstown. Thank Qantas for giving me the opportunity to find this documentary.
Where can I watch it?
A great doc-all actual footage, riveting and heartbreaking. I felt like a spoiled AmericanBastard watching the hell that family, aged 8 to 80, and the defector’s mother went through, just for a shot at what I got by some accident of birth. And still they cried at having to leave home. These damn dictators and all oppressors-we get one trip through this life, and they spend all of theirs making millions of others’ horrible. Thanks be to that pastor-now there’s a Christian. Puts those “Christian Nationalists” to shame. They need a vacation in North Korea.
응원하겠습니다
I am sorry that we could not attend the showtimes in theater on 10/23 and 24. When will it be available to watch in other ways?
mentioned it is on Amazon prime. I watched it on the Crostmas eve in a Qantas plane from Brisbane to Queenstown. Thank Qantas for giving me the opportunity to find this documentary.
How can I watch this in the UK, please?
I would have been destroyed if that family had not have made it to safety, this was a hard but wonderful watch.
이 영화는 이 시대 지구상에서 살아가는 의식있는 사람들은 모두 봐서, 이 문명시대에 가축처럼 갇혀 사육되고, 고통당하는 북한민들의 해방을 위해 노력해야 합니다.(The film sees all the conscious people living on Earth in this era, and should strive to free North Koreans who are trapped, bred, and suffered like livestock in this civilized era.)
Where can I watch this documentary?
Idk I've found it on watchseries

I watched it in a Qantas airplane too.
Beyond Utopia is available on BBC iplayer in the UK(maybe other countries) as part of their 'STORYVILLE' series(series 2024) 1h 44m. Free to watch
Will this be coming to DVD or Blue-ray?
It is free on iBBC player for UK citizens, trying to hunt for it free somewhere else now but I doubt I can find it.

Russians, pay attention to your future.
In North Korea Orwell's 1984 has become true.
In an ideal world other countries would have intervened and removed the north Korean people from the hands of this monstrous madman.
But unfortunately for the North Koreans their country doesn't have oil for the Americans or Europeans to get interested!
forget about global warming....or the polar bears...... please sombody help the north korean people+++
Now lets make a documentary about Iran.
Sounds exactly like waking up the truth about our world in the 'West'.
seems similar to ‘Escaping North Korea’.
Praying for the rescue of North Korea in the mighty name of Jesus 🙏
This North Korean regime makes weapons for Russia now. They are also getting hypersonic technology from Russia.
imagine defending this..
Trump watched this and yearned for america to be like that. This way, no one could laugh at him and make him cry. Trump reads Kim’s love letter every night before going to sleep.

I only have my doubts about the ideology behind this documentary. Sound of Freedom brought to us how neoliberalism propaganda looks like.
Once you watch this you will see the truth. It is not a fiction and it is full of real footage and real people.
Sound of freedom is not a documentary. Half of that movie is fiction. What was real is that Donald Trump took children away from their families and even Melania Trump showed up with a immigrant detention center with jacket that said 'I don't care'. Very classy of her. That is what conservatism looks like.

You do realize in Gaza women can't go out without a man and singing is illegal.
@@Joey-ct8bm you realise that’s completely untrue. I’ve been there 3 times
@@morningstar4789 You can't sing and dance on the streets of Gaza as a woman. You'll be in jail in no time. No sharia law allows this.
At any point in the documentary does it ever mention how Korea got the way it is? Or mention the US genociding 20% of its population?
If not, it's just another piece of entirely dismissable propaganda that everyone should take about as seriously as they take Yeonmi Park claiming that they have to push the trains.
an american documentary about north korea is credible like an israeli documentary about palastine. make peace, not war!
Oh shut up.
It's a documentary from the UK.
No freedom of religion sounds great. It just looks too cold for my liking
Too cold? 😂🤣 Don't be a sissy. isn't this what you wanted right? 🤡
Long life to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the only legitimate Korea 🇲🇦❤🇰🇵
😂 You mean Choson/Joseon (the name prior to DPRK/ROK). DPRK is still a puppet nation prior to the peninsula split from Japanese colonialism. It’s obviously under “poor management.”
@@MyWorldIsYourOyster 조선 is still used to say Korea in DPRK, wich is not the case in the puppet South Korea
@@paulfargeix3712you think the ROK is a puppet nation? DPRK ideologies are outdated. It may have worked for like 10-15 years, but clearly it does not anymore. (I’m also fully aware about the DPRK use of 조선글 vs 한글.)
@@MyWorldIsYourOyster Outdated ideologie ? 😂, China wich is the second most powerfull economy in the world is a communist country. And at least DPRK kept it's culture and it's dignity, wich is not the case of South Korea wich is just an american colony
@@paulfargeix3712says you, the Moroccan. 😂 Meanwhile, the Kim family, are capitalists. There’s nothing wrong with 🇰🇷. The culture is very much prevalent. It’s also not an American colony. If it is/was, then USD would be the currency like in places such as Saipan, Puerto Rico, etc. [which are proper American colonies]. (Btw can’t compare 🇨🇳 with the 🇰🇵. They were always independent, whereas the DPRK relies on China.)
A westerner making a movie about North Korea, yeah Madeleine, here's a middle finger to you.
