    Let´s imagine we´re flying from Frankfurt to Gatwick. So prior to our flight, me and my captain meet up in the briefing area where we gather all important information for the flight to England. Information about any possible changes at the departure and destination airport, maybe a taxiway is closed, maybe an Instrument Landing System is out of service or enroute navigation aids may give false information, and of course we check for the weather.
    Once in the aircraft we have to perform take-off calculations to get the necessary take-off speeds and power settings. But therefore we need reliable and accurate weather information. So at one point we´re going to consult the so called ATIS. Which stands for Automatic Terminal Information Service. The ATIS is a continuous broadcast of recorded aeronautical information of the airfield. On all airport ground and approach charts you´ll find the necessary ATIS frequency. Yes the ATIS is transmitted via radio. So you tune in the appropriate frequency and then you will hear this:

    This is actually interesting. I am a pilot in the US and I always thought knots, feet, etc was universal. I haven't ever piloted an aircraft outside of the states, but that would trip me up good. Good to know. Also, I would add the ATIS information can be used by ATC to catch pilots in BS'ning :).

    • @ZK-APA
      @ZK-APA Před 2 lety

      All ILS cat III approaches have to be with autoland. The Airbus A320 and the B747 both can do autoland so yes most probably he has done it.
      In terms of duties, its more of a monitoring role and take control if something doesnt work out

A question: - Why QNH is in expressed hPa in Europe for exemple (1013.25 hPa normalized) and in inHG (2992 inHg normalized) for North America ? Does altimeters of all planes are configurable with these 2 units or do you have to make a calculation while getting the information from the regional QNH in North America if you have for exemple a European hPa altimeter ?
