- Catfish rigs or how you setup your fishing rod to fish for catfish are a popular topic among those that visit Catfish Edge and something anglers are always seeking more information on. We've covered many of the top catfish rigs on the Catfish Edge site but still get questions on a daily basis.
If you start looking at all of the options you'll find a wide variety of rigs for catfishing and the information can become very confusing quickly. With that in mind I created this video to cut through all the clutter, all the many options and break it down in it's most basic form so anglers who're just getting started targeting catfish or just getting serious about catfishing can find all of the "must know" information here in one place.
In this video I cover the three essential catfish rigs the slip sinker rig, santee rig and slip bobber rig (I actually use the Secret Catfish Rig instead of a slip bobber but the slip bobber is a great alternative).
You'll learn the details on how to tie these rigs, what makes them effective, which species of catfish and techniques you can use them for and more in this weeks video from Catfish Edge.

LOL, glad to see I am not the only one who nabs accidental bass when catfishing. Stopped using creek chubs cause I was catching do many.
Great video chad. One of my favorite channels in CZcams
+sicboy83 Thanks
I wanted to thank you for all of your videos. I went out fishing today for the first time, between your website and this channel you pretty much taught me how to fish. because of this I knew what tackle that I needed and how to set it up. within the first hour I caught my first catfish. it was a truly awesome experience and I can't wait to go again. I'm totally hooked on the sport now :-)
+f2Lifer Thanks
Awesome!
Still fishing after 6 years?
that was awesome, im learning a lot from you. Thank you for posting it.
f2Lifer Thanks
My new favorite channel! Can’t wait to try that Carolina rig this weekend
Thanks! You’re my new favorite subscriber!
Chad we need a book! Or a PDF something of that nature on Rigs, Knots and gear other info.
+ohiovalley catfishing One of these days, I just never seem to have enough time!
hello Chad and once again you explained three easy ways of setting your hook rig I appreciate it you don't beat around the bush try to sell a bunch of crap you get right to the basics I just subscribe to your channel so fish on
Thanks
GREAT video on catfish rigs
+Carl cardwell Jr. thanks
Chad great video as always Hi from Messin' with the Fish on Lake Tawakoni Texas
Thanks
Love your videos and products. About to order some rods. Gonna book a trip. Let's go fish!
Thanks
Slip bobber for channel cats when using prepared bait is a good technique!
If you don't have a slip bobber simply resting your line between your finger and thumb is a great way to feel those light strikes from channels.
Thanks
🎣Those are my main 3 that I learned from your channel years ago!!!! Defiantly going to have to get some versa rattles!!!! Awesome video!!!!🎣
Thanks
Thank you for explaining these 3 best catfish rigs straight up as you did. You made what could be confusing riggings look just so simple to put together and your confidence in them is reassurance that they can do the job and bring in the catfish. And yes, that truly was a heck of a bass bomb! Great fishing to you.
Great tips. Subed and Liked. Love me some catfish!!!
+FishingGamesPod.com thanks
Great video. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks
love this dude. Good education. . FISH ON!!!!!
Thanks
Love the rods you were using.
Thanks
Zero rigs have never failed me. It'd literally your main line, maybe a leader if needed, TIE on an egg sink seven or eight inches from your hook and that's it.
EraseMeWhole lol how we did it all my life , I just recently got into the fancy catfish rigs.
I just use a steel leter with hotdogs and worms
The Drop shot or Kentucky Rig is also a top of the line Catfish rig ...of all them ....
It's my favorite
Thanks
Thanks for the information man
Any time!
Excellent info! I use all but the Santee Cooper rig. I'm going to add that to get some more Blues and see how it goes. Thanks!
Tim Van Auken Thanks
Chad, huge fan! I've seen almost all your videos and I even use your secret catfish rig. I know you fish Eagle Mountain Lake quite a bit and since we are close neighbors (I live in Saginaw), I was wondering where some of the best places to bank fish on that lake are? I have fished out at Augies a lot with some success but catching a lot of small ones. Looking for numbers of larger channels. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.
+Kevin Jackson Shore fishing is pretty limited on this lake to the parks and few public access areas. I'd be hitting the parks on the west side right now.
Very good video
Thanks
im pretty sure there are some more simple rigs that you can do. but all of these are amazing methods.
Thanks
great video
Thanks
Love your videos chad! What are you using to tape them? I'm impressed with the quality of the footage and audio and trying to make some educational videos of my channel
Depends on where I am, if I have help etc. Sometimes GoPro or iPhone, sometimes Canon DSLR
Thanks for the reply!
No problem
Wish i knew where to fish for catfish on Ft Myers. Wish i had a SeaArk boat. You gave me the website to go buy a brand new one.
Can you make a video on different technics on how to catch catfish with jug rigs with multiple hooks?
From San Diego, CA Going to fish at Santee Lake. I guess I found the right rig 🎣 LFG!!!
Thanks
I'd like to know what rods you are using in this video the orange, orange and black rods and where to buy them. I am planning on getting the orange abu catfish special reel and would like to pair it to one of these rods. I have a purple catfish edition abu reel i got from catfish connection and i absolutely love it. But orange and black are my favorite colors "Harley-Davidson colors" so I'd really like to get one of these rod/reel combos. Thanks, Biker-Dale
Dale, these are my signature series catfish rods from Whisker Seeker Tackle you can get more info at www.whiskerseeker,com
All three are very good rigs, but i mostly use the slip and santee rigs.
Yes, me too!
Chad I've learned you prefer to use fresh shad over stink baits and chicken livers. I don't have access to shad where I live (cast nets are illegal here) and the local bait shops charge a small fortune for a small quantity of frozen cut bait. The local grocery store carries packages of fresh frozen sardines. These are 6 to 8 inches in length. We don't have blues or flatheads here. The only large cats are channel. Since the sardines are a strongly scented fish I was wondering if you would think they would be a good choice for channels. Since the sardines once thawed would be delicate and difficult to keep on a hook I plan on using surgical tube dressing to make sacks.
What is the native primary forage fish in the waters?
+Catfish Edge various minnows, sunfish and perch. Wears not permitted to use sunfish and perch. Minnows can be scarce. The local bait shop sells cut bait from longhouse suckers and they normally all but disappear come late spring. I was thinking sardines since they are oily and provide a fair bit of scent
hello sir where can I buy these rods can give me information
www.whiskerseeker.com
Nice video
Jeff Gerald Thanks
oh my
thanks for sharing buddy.... sub'd
Thanks
I’m fishing on lake st clair and I’m curious to know how heavy of a sliding weight I should use. Is a quarter ounce good?
I rarely use less than an ounce and most often 3 ounces
Help a lot caught me a fat one!!
Thanks
Do you cast and reel these in like lures, or cast and let them sit until something bites? Also, what kind of bait do you suggest for these rigs?
+midwestmatthew let them sit. Check the catfish edge website for your bait info!
Catfish
Edge
Hey could you help? I like to catfish and I fish in a pay lake and I was wondering what rig I should use for that like a bottom right or with a bobber and what bait and just what rig
I really know nothing about pay lakes, sorry
What size peg float for the Santee rig?
Can I use large Worden's Spin-N-Go float with the Santee Cooper Rig? I mean catfish have eyes and maybe the flash would attract them.
+Bill Flint I'm not familiar with these, sorry
+Catfish Edge Thanks for the replay. I will give it a try anyways. They normally used for flounder fishing and looks like this...
ive been having problems with the santee cooper getting twisted up and fraying/stretching the upper line out..current runs fast and any kind of debree/algea that catches the line it twist's the rig all up..any tips/help on trying another rig ? Any body..lol
You shouldn't be having those issues.
Great vid! We have a free fishing day coming for kids. Here is the setup: public boat ramp with a slew that goes in off main lake on both sides about a 100 yards. They net off both slews from main water and dump in 1400lbs of catfish. The depth at net on one side about 10 feet to going in at about 5. The other side maybe same or less. Problem is there is a lot of timber and stuff in slews and a lot if tall grass. Would you recommend the 3rd, and your favorite example with a treble hook. I took son last year with worms(I know) but all these kids out there and know one catching NOTHING... except one old man and grandson. He lsaid worms/livers weren't working and shrimp was getting them, but I don't know how his rig was, and I was afraid to put my kids on bottom for fear getting hung up lol...I just did a leader with split shot and a regular bobber and tried to get down as low as we could...I'm sure the bait didn't help none! 100 kids out there last year and no one even getting hits. Wildlife officer told me cats came from a farm and I'm thinking may be why they hit only shrimp. I noticed cats were all white...guess because they were raised and small...
I appreciate the "love" man...but you didn't give me an answer lol
Nothing better than native bait
The rig man...was asking about the rig setup(see my outline above) not bait! Your vid is about rig setup...geees
Fish do different things at different times. There’s no way to answer your question based on what you’ve provided. Try different rigs and see what works best. Part of fishing is getting hung up and if there’s timber there’s usually fish in that timber.
Lol hey brother, thank you for ur time. I've fished most of my adult life, mainly bass....but have not cat fished, at all! I know about timber and fish. But I know catfish are bottom feeders and that is all I know. I googled in hopes of helping my son do better on this Avent this year because I don't catfish...that's why a gave you the senario. Anyway, I'm sure we'll have a great time. I enjoyed your vid... keep up the great work....
Hey Chad flip you Bimini around so it opens to the rear. It frees up all of your overhead space. Awesome videos, thanks!
Yes I’m aware. It’s in my way either way so I’d prefer it be in the way at the back.
I like to use the sliding sinker rig and the three-way rig.
Thanks1
The three-way rig is awesome for flathead fishing at the spillway. I always use around a 6 lb or less test for the sinker line and around 20 for the main line and leader cause you know most of the time when you get hung in those rocks it's usually the sinker that gets hung. The light line breaks when you hang up and you get to keep your hook, main line and fish .
Thanks
Wayne Cannon Thanks
What is the bead under the sinker for on the first rig?
Protect the knot
Any tips on keeping your slip bobber drifting away from the boat? Mine keeps wanting to come back to me
Reverse the direction you're fishing and it will float back to you. That's the problem with floats.
Just curious, what was the rod with the Carolina rig on it? Looked like a whisker seeker but can't find on website or in comments
Whisker Seeker Rod. That was a prototype that didn’t get colored right. Only one exists.
Ok thanks
tyvm
Thanks
What rode holder are you using back by the motor?
I think it's Video Micro.
good vid, plan to try these rigs out on my Kayak here in Missouri
Awesome let me know how they work!
I can basically use any type of float for a santee rig, right?
Needs to be a peg float ideally
What reels do you normally use with your rods
6500 PRBE
What kind of hooks do you use? Im using mustades 8/0 but they just dont seem wide enough for my cut bait! ( 1 inch size) And will the Float rig on the bottom work for shore fishing!?
Jon right now I'm using some hooks that aren't on the market yet but you can get some good suggestions here www.catfishedge.com/catfishing-gear/
Thanks!
We tried the float tonight! Got 4 cats from 5 to 13 lbs be fore the storm rolled in on us and shut it all down! So ya the float (santi rig) does work from shore just shorter lead!
Awesome!
I love it got video bombed by a bass ha ha keep up the good work
Question....the santee rig....i fish from shore...will the line twist around the float as i cast.....do i need to use a bobber stopper using this rig????
No
No and No
U can tell he was thrown off after the fish lol. Awesome.
Are you able to use live bait with the San T rig?
Yes
Catfish Edge sweet. I know what I'm doing this weekend 🎣👍
What is your opinion on a drop shot rig for cats?
It's an OK option if needed but not something needed often.
Where you get that rod holder in back of your boat?
Built it. There's a video here on the channel.
Can you every use the Santee with live bait?
jonah1821 Yes
+Catfish Edge can you use it with night crawlers?
What bait were you using when you caught the bass at the end?
Shad
How would you feel about maybe donating some fishing gear to some beginners??
I donate gear all the time.
I use the first one minus the rattle
Why is a leader used? Can you just have a weight hook and bait?
To provide abrasion and shock resistance as well as prevent line twist.
👍
Back at ya!
what bait did you catch the bass on?
Cut shad
*****
wow
wish we could fish with gangs of rods like other states, here in Kansas we are allowed two poles ,and you have to buy a permit for a third,
Ouch
U 4got your bead on the example 😆 @1:20
Sometimes I get in a hurry and forget!
Lol I laughed too hard at how catching that fish threw you off 😂😂
It happens!
Just getting into catching catfish. I’m a very avid bass fisherman. Can you also not do a drop shot method to keep the bait off the bottom?
You generally want to have a leader!
Catfish Edge even with braid?
Yes
Especially with braid
Ever try a pully set up?
Yes
How do I catch catfish that are stocked in a lake?
There's some great tips here on our website www.catfishedge.com/catfishing-tips/
drop a line in the water
read it great information. I did see a 3 ft catfish in a stock lake here in SoCal this weekend. It kept coming up and trashing, my guess it was dying. Didnt need to scuba dive to see that monster.
Here's a good place to start
www.catfishedge.com/catfishing-tips/
you the boat salesman from the "Gone Fishing" movie? 😁
No idea who that is but no
Hello sir!whats the best rig for fast waters
Slip sinker rig
I've tried that Santi Cooper rig and never gotten a bite why?
You’re not fishing where the fish are
What about the typical top/bottom rig?
You mean two drops and two hooks?
Catfish Edge yes. Top hook. Bottom hook. Sinker
I don't rig like that much but some day and have success.
What weight sinker??
Depends on which species of catfish, size of bait, technique, current. Long story short, as much as you need.
Ok thanks for the info.
Am I the only one that puts their sinker below the hook? Like I never have any problems with it and it's how I always do it this was I can see the movement in the line emediatly and I know exactly what's going on manytimes on a catfish I wait untill it knocks my sinker so that I have slack in the line and real untill I feel the fish then set the hook
No, many people rig that way. Just not my preference.
weight of sliding sinker??
Depends on conditions. I usually use 2 or 3 ounces
Those rattles wont do any good for bank fishing, right?
Yes they do
Oops I lied, I don't have the float by the hook setup. But I will next time I go out.
Thanks 👍
What do beads do
Protect the knot
Keeps the sinker from slamming into the knot and breaking it.
Is this on eagle mountain lake
I never reveal where I'm fishing :)
+Catfish Edge I looked up your website on google and it said you where only 6 minutes away from me at lake view marina
Yes sir, when we're fishing at that lake.
I have a circle hook , sinker , and a hotdog, i never have trouble catching catfish.
If it works!
those pain in the butt bass
There essential rigs so I can catch a catfish. So those I caught with nothing but the heaviest sinker in the box. Same sinker but a the smallest float in the box float about 10 inches from the crawdad. You sure these ain't catfish I been catching. Sometimes I just have too
Never said other rigs wouldn't work! :)
what I'm getting at is I thought catfish stayed on the bottom but using a slip bobber your not fishing on the bottom
+dustin lane catfish don't always stay on the bottom. Couldn't be further from the truth. They go where the food is.
Catfish Edge I'm gonna try this rig real soon
Kentucky rig?....similar to a high-low rig.
what's so special about the slip bobber ? why not just use a regular bobber?
+dustin lane you can't fish a regular bobber very easily in deep or deeper water
could you imaging trying to fish 10 ft deep with a regular bobber? Casting would prove troublesome! If you haven't tried a slip bobber rig, I suggest you try it, it''s one of my favorites. I don't even use a traditional bobber anymore!
Your bobber is upside down in the illustration.
+Shiddy yes
I literally have 3 poles with virtually all 3 setups lol
Cool
i like to multi species fish
Cool! Thanks
+Catfish Edge i have a Berkley 7foot medium heavy lighting shock rod and a basspro bass casting reel my combo is for bass but works great for catfish
Cool!
Never go bass to trout, Chad!
SuperTurbineTech LOL Thanks
Or you can always just put a hook out there instead of having seven different items for each rig
To each their own
Catfish Edge
I have to admit that I love the slip sinker rig myself. I also like the Kentucky rig.
I kinda said “ you can always put a hook out there “ because I found a couple of the rigs you presented a little complex. No offense
Have a nice night🙂👍
I just tie a dog turf on a string
Only if you'll make a video showing us how it works.
Can you use these rigs from the bank
Yes
Every rig catches catfish
Not so much
