  • Catfish rigs or how you setup your fishing rod to fish for catfish are a popular topic among those that visit Catfish Edge and something anglers are always seeking more information on. We've covered many of the top catfish rigs on the Catfish Edge site but still get questions on a daily basis.
    If you start looking at all of the options you'll find a wide variety of rigs for catfishing and the information can become very confusing quickly. With that in mind I created this video to cut through all the clutter, all the many options and break it down in it's most basic form so anglers who're just getting started targeting catfish or just getting serious about catfishing can find all of the "must know" information here in one place.
    In this video I cover the three essential catfish rigs the slip sinker rig, santee rig and slip bobber rig (I actually use the Secret Catfish Rig instead of a slip bobber but the slip bobber is a great alternative).
    You'll learn the details on how to tie these rigs, what makes them effective, which species of catfish and techniques you can use them for and more in this weeks video from Catfish Edge.
    For more details on catfish rigs check out the resources at Catfish Edge through the link below

    I wanted to thank you for all of your videos. I went out fishing today for the first time, between your website and this channel you pretty much taught me how to fish. because of this I knew what tackle that I needed and how to set it up. within the first hour I caught my first catfish. it was a truly awesome experience and I can't wait to go again. I'm totally hooked on the sport now :-)

    Slip bobber for channel cats when using prepared bait is a good technique!
    If you don't have a slip bobber simply resting your line between your finger and thumb is a great way to feel those light strikes from channels.

    Chad I've learned you prefer to use fresh shad over stink baits and chicken livers. I don't have access to shad where I live (cast nets are illegal here) and the local bait shops charge a small fortune for a small quantity of frozen cut bait. The local grocery store carries packages of fresh frozen sardines. These are 6 to 8 inches in length. We don't have blues or flatheads here. The only large cats are channel. Since the sardines are a strongly scented fish I was wondering if you would think they would be a good choice for channels. Since the sardines once thawed would be delicate and difficult to keep on a hook I plan on using surgical tube dressing to make sacks.

      What is the native primary forage fish in the waters?

    • @fredstratton3079
      @fredstratton3079 Před 9 lety

      +Catfish Edge various minnows, sunfish and perch. Wears not permitted to use sunfish and perch. Minnows can be scarce. The local bait shop sells cut bait from longhouse suckers and they normally all but disappear come late spring. I was thinking sardines since they are oily and provide a fair bit of scent

    Great vid! We have a free fishing day coming for kids. Here is the setup: public boat ramp with a slew that goes in off main lake on both sides about a 100 yards. They net off both slews from main water and dump in 1400lbs of catfish. The depth at net on one side about 10 feet to going in at about 5. The other side maybe same or less. Problem is there is a lot of timber and stuff in slews and a lot if tall grass. Would you recommend the 3rd, and your favorite example with a treble hook. I took son last year with worms(I know) but all these kids out there and know one catching NOTHING... except one old man and grandson. He lsaid worms/livers weren't working and shrimp was getting them, but I don't know how his rig was, and I was afraid to put my kids on bottom for fear getting hung up lol...I just did a leader with split shot and a regular bobber and tried to get down as low as we could...I'm sure the bait didn't help none! 100 kids out there last year and no one even getting hits. Wildlife officer told me cats came from a farm and I'm thinking may be why they hit only shrimp. I noticed cats were all white...guess because they were raised and small...

      Fish do different things at different times. There’s no way to answer your question based on what you’ve provided. Try different rigs and see what works best. Part of fishing is getting hung up and if there’s timber there’s usually fish in that timber.

      The three-way rig is awesome for flathead fishing at the spillway. I always use around a 6 lb or less test for the sinker line and around 20 for the main line and leader cause you know most of the time when you get hung in those rocks it's usually the sinker that gets hung. The light line breaks when you hang up and you get to keep your hook, main line and fish .

    Am I the only one that puts their sinker below the hook? Like I never have any problems with it and it's how I always do it this was I can see the movement in the line emediatly and I know exactly what's going on manytimes on a catfish I wait untill it knocks my sinker so that I have slack in the line and real untill I feel the fish then set the hook

      No, many people rig that way. Just not my preference.

    There essential rigs so I can catch a catfish. So those I caught with nothing but the heaviest sinker in the box. Same sinker but a the smallest float in the box float about 10 inches from the crawdad. You sure these ain't catfish I been catching. Sometimes I just have too

    what I'm getting at is I thought catfish stayed on the bottom but using a slip bobber your not fishing on the bottom

    • @Catfishedge
      @Catfishedge  Před 7 lety +1

      +dustin lane catfish don't always stay on the bottom. Couldn't be further from the truth. They go where the food is.

    what's so special about the slip bobber ? why not just use a regular bobber?

    • @Catfishedge
      @Catfishedge  Před 7 lety +2

      +dustin lane you can't fish a regular bobber very easily in deep or deeper water

    • @reelecstasyohio2860
      @reelecstasyohio2860 Před 7 lety

      could you imaging trying to fish 10 ft deep with a regular bobber? Casting would prove troublesome! If you haven't tried a slip bobber rig, I suggest you try it, it''s one of my favorites. I don't even use a traditional bobber anymore!

      I have to admit that I love the slip sinker rig myself. I also like the Kentucky rig.
      I kinda said “ you can always put a hook out there “ because I found a couple of the rigs you presented a little complex. No offense
      Have a nice night🙂👍
