Circle Hooks For Catfish - 3 Mistakes That Cost You Fish

- Circle hooks are one of the most popular hooks among catfish anglers and for good reason. They're a very effective tool for catching all species of catfish, all sizes and using a variety of techniques. They haven't always been that popular though.
When it comes to circle hooks for catfish there's two groups, those that love them, those that hate them and there's rarely much in between.
If you've never used circle hooks to catch catfish or used them before and didn't have success there's hope because most often the reason people struggle with catching catfish using a circle hooks is either that they're using the wrong hook or not using the hook correctly.
Unlike many hooks that can be set or will set themselves anywhere they come in contact the circle hook works different. For a circle hook to work the hook has to slide, catch and turn for it to hook and that hook usually happens right in the corner of the mouth.
If you're using a circle hook that's not large enough or does not have a large enough gap then you'll miss fish and lose fish. It's critical when fishing for catfish that you use a larger hook and pay close attention to the gap.
The mouth of a catfish is thick and tough, unlike the paper thin mouth of most other freshwater fish and most standard "run of the mill" circle hooks aren't large enough and don't have large enough gaps to function correctly with catfish, especially big catfish.
In this weeks catfishing quick tip from Catfish Edge, Chad Ferguson walks you through the three mistakes that cost you fish when using circle hooks and how to correct them.
These include choosing the right hooks, making sure you have a large enough hook gap, making sure you hook the bait correctly and preventing fouled hooks.
These tips will no doubt help you increase your success catching catfish and make circle hooks much more effective.
We'll be back as well with another video walking you through everything you need to know about using circle hooks, the different techniques and information on how to set the hook with a circle hook because you actually can despite what others may have told you.

nice tips, we use circle hooks a lot for halibut here in Alaska. I love that they really only hook the fish in the corner of the mouth.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! Serious watched this video because I spent 2 days of watching cats run away with my bait leaving me empty handed. Took you advice, upgraded my arsenal and baited the way you taught in this video and BAM! Caught me some largies!!! Can't thank you enough!
Awesome
We don’t ever set hooks 9 times out of 10 they’ll drive that hook into themselves.most of our flatheads are 30 pound plus
Thank you! I went out yesterday, did EVERYTHING wrong according to this video, got my cut bait stolen twice, and lost another BIG fish! I will absolutely use these tips!
Thanks. Let us know how you do!
Wanted to try the circle hooks soon and you explained everything clear and with no extra BS.Thanks.
Thanks

Thanks Chad. Great info about the bait flipping around in the water. I'm going to have to take better precautions with this.
Thanks
I kept foul hooking with your Whisker Seeker circles. Got discouraged and went back to kahle hooks. Never thought about hooking the bait at an angle. Awesome tip!! Going to give it another shot...tight lines
Wow Thanks, that's the best pro tip I've heard in a bit. I've tried gamakatsu 3/0 circles a few times but they would rarely set. Now I understand! Maybe i'll give 'em another try soon with a 6/0-8/0. I hate thinking of those missed hook sets and the ones that got away.
Thanks
learn my lesson the hard way yesterday. Lost a monster fish due to a fouled hook. Thanks for the tips!
awesome tips chad good point on baiting the hooks.
Thanks
Love the videos Chad. I watch all the videos and have listened to all the podcast!
Thanks
Great advice. We are hitting an old irrigation pond today stocked with some monster blues and channels I'm pumped up Geared up and this is a great refresher course. Thanks man!
Thanks!
thanks for all the tips hints Clues.. we went fishing this weekend at lake Ellsworth's in Oklahoma had many and many a good hard hits on cut bait and perch and only brought in three little measly fish I think some of the tips that you giving us in this video here will help us land more and some bigger fish thank you very much appreciate it keep up the great videos good work and Fish on my friend
Thanks
Thanks for the tips
Great video!!!! I just started using circle hooks now that I'm targeting bigger cats. Good tip on hooking cut baits.
Thanks!
Great tips thanks Chad.
I have been fishing for channel cats with a 8/O circle hook and have been getting bites but no luck but now I feel way more confident that I will succeed this time
That's a BIG hook for channel catfish.
Dont set the hook when using circle hooks...the fish sets it. If you try to set it yourself you will pull them out of their mouth they are not designed for hook setting by the fishermen.
Thank You Chad, this was helpful.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tips. Gonna change hooks now.
those are three very good tips but me being an ex aggressive saltwater Angler there is one more tip I can tell you to add to your video and that would be to tweak that circle hook it's easier to be shown than to be said but straight out of the package we stick them in a vice and take a pair of channel locks or pliers and halfway tweek that hook maybe 10% that way when the fish bites it it'll automatically screw itself into the jaw just saying thank you for the video
Do you mean like making it offset?
@@mcsnow1434 yea I do the same thing offset it a little it helps
@C J Bowen cash me fishing how bout dat
Thank you I just started using circle hooks, I'm confident I'll hook up more often because of this video.
Nice! Good luck!
As allways good video
Good tips I caught 3 channel cats yesterday but missed a quite a bit of them, mostly likely due to only using a size 2 or 3 circle hook
Maybe because of the hook. I usually use trebles for channel catfish
Thank you for sharing the information!
Thanks
great tips bro👍
nice intro...and thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thanks and welcome
Great video thank you keep fishing.
+Rob DeMasi Thanks
Yes about gap- critical for certain species, but I’ve landed so many more catfish on a j hook than a circle hook that the (offset) j hook is still my go-to hook. I’m sure it comes down to some technique that I’ve yet to master regarding circle hooks with catfish but I personally swear by an offset j hook for this species where I fish. My point of this comment is, use whatever technique works for you. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.
hey chad that was a very helpful tip.. on how to use and bait a circle hook thank you very much.. FISH ON.
Thanks
That’s all I use is circle hooks whether fresh water or saltwater fishing. Good tips Chad. Thanks buddy
Thanks

I love fishing and catfish are my favorite to fish love the video and subbed. But once you have the circle hook tied how do you tie it to the rig or swivel then the weights? Idk how it works & cant find info on that. I barely started with circle hooks and it seems easier
Check this out, should answer your questions www.catfishedge.com/catfish-rigs/
just started using 16 ot for catfish i like a big drum head for bait
great information
+YAK MAN thanks
I know its contrary to what you said but I've never lost a cat using a dough ball on a 5/0 or 8/0 that covers the whole thing. I usually stuff it with two stink baits inside the dough and mold it over the circle hook. I suppose it's because it's a soft bait but figured I'd let ya'll know they work great for me and my methods.
+Pike Hunter because it's a soft bait
Thank you. God bless.
You have any videos on cat fishing rods and reels? I have a Penn Spinfisher V 10500 I use in the ocean and wanted to know what you thought about spinning reels for cats

what would you recommend for catching big cats from the bank I don't have a boat I use cutup bluegill and liver I catch a few but I want to drag in big ones from the bank
Shad or Skipjack
Hey Chad, What size circle hook would you recommend for channel catfish. Love your videos and thanks for the help.
He already stated the size of the hook he said that it will catch anything from a 2 lb channel to a trophy fish just watch the video.......
Awesome 👍
Thanks
What size bait would you recommend for 2 lb (ish) catfish? whole head like in this video? Small chunks, large, etc. Thanks for all the cool tips!

planing to go for Whats up with Elizabeth lake in Palmdale CA tomorrow, any advices , suggestions?
Yes read all you can on my website
Off topic but what's your opinion on baitholder in catfishing? My success rates have been about the same with circles and baitholders but figured a professional input would be interesting.
I prefer circles.
What about bending the circle hook so it's offset? I hear that works good.
You can. Check out the video i'm uploading tonight.
Does your tryiline knot pull forward on the hook set
I use a 3/o circle because everyone tells me to go small saying the smaller I have the hook, the more likely I am to catch fish because it will be easy for them to swallow the hook and get gut hooked. I also used to use a 5/o bait holder hook and it had barbs on the shank to keep the bait from sliding off. I caught a few on there but people told me the size was too large and I also had issues rigging chicken livers in surgical gauze with that hook. Suggestions?? Thanks watched the video so that's why I am asking for suggestions. Thanks
That’s too small
Use a treble hook for chicken livers
What is that outro song I've been looking for it for almost a year
No idea. I don’t think I have it any longer.
Have you ever heard of the zip tie rig that you zip tie the bait to the hook. I saw it on muddy river catfishing and was wondering if any of yall ever tried it ? Its supposed to give you more hook exposure
No, I can't think of any reason to zip tie a bait and can't imagine the time I would spend doing so.
I read your info on channel catfishing and you indicated that the treble hook was necessary for that rig (slip bobber rig). Is that right?
I fish for smaller channel catfish so I use treble hooks.
i can do shad and. cutbait mullet no problem coming off the hook because they have good thickness but It feels like shad fingerlings fly off time to time whats your thoughts on those brotha
+Caleb Hvt double hook them
good
good info but im still confused where i fish is flying point park md that has catfish but not like massive there like 8 pounds and rarely higher wht size hook circle would i use i only got 3/0 circles and j hooks
6/0 Whisker Seeker Triple Threat
can i use treble hooks for cat fishing at the small lake, using a hod dogs ?
Yes
D and R canal in NJ. Small 1-2 lbs fish? 1/0 hook or 7/0? Please advise

Are you on lake Buchanan? I just like watching local videos for relevance.

I have a bad catch % using (8/0) circle hooks (fishing from the bank for monster blues)..not all the fish grab the bait and haul ass..So when the rods in the holder and i get a decent hit i'll pick the rod up and wait for another good hit..once that happens i slowly sweep the rod while reeling in fast keeping the line tight..sometimes it works, sometimes it dont..like i said the catch % is low and i miss alot of nice fish..thinking about trying octopus,or kahle hook where i can really pull and set the hook on shy, short runs..you guys got any advice im all ears.,lol
Here you go. czcams.com/video/8DZQjPYL1dY/video.html
Can you use circle hooks from shore? I'm sure you can but I'm mainly asking because all the videos I've seen of circle hooks have been with a boat.
Yes
I use Team Catfish 8/0 circle hooks 👍
im about to buy one of your rods man..7"6 heavy action baitcasting ..
+Verizon User cool
How many rods and reels are you allowed in your state?
100 hooks in the water per person
Does anyone know if color makes any difference ?
Is a size 6 circle hook too big for 10 and 8 pound catfish I'm trying to decide if I need to get smaller hooks
Circle hook sizes vary a lot. I use Whisker Seeker Triple Threat 6/0 hook for blues 6 to 8 pounds and less. Bigger than that I use the 8/0 or 10/0
I like the tip for hooking bait at an angle. I wish there was a way to implement that in a river with as much current as the Missouri. Unfortunately the second you'd try that your rig would be spun up beyond recognition. But gonna have to think of a solution based on that idea. Good work. Like your vids.
Use a ball chain swivel
It wouldn't work. It's a good suggestion. But where I fish 4 mph current is a minimum. We could use some diamond swivels and if there was any spin to the bait, the leader would be twisted from 2' to .5 inches in seconds. Any time you're up around Neb. city (my stretch of the MO) you're more than welcome on my boat. It's a constant struggle. I'm thinking about buying a 8-10-12 no-roll mold. Expensive as crap, and I do like the way a three way holds me up 6 inches off the bottom (theoretically), but I'm thinking keeping everything in-line will be a good thing to test out.
Squatchy McSquatchsquatch hey I fish st louis Mississippi river take a spring like a size of s mechanical penciled wrap it in the hook stretch the other end keeps the mouth gap open for hook ups and dont try set the hook if your bank fishing the current does that I have cought 50 pounders at Melvin price lock and dam need a boat for that in the damn wall on the over flow side
Squatchy McSquatchsquatch s
Santee rig goods for catfish too??
Yes
Been using circle hooks for about 2 years now since I started fishing with my mother and bro again. We used liver mainly, and I make sacks. My bro and mom use the thread technique but we ALL basically load up that hook, we rarely miss a fish. Is it a different story for liver since it's so soft?
I'm not 100% clear on your question. Are you asking how to keep liver on a circle hook?
Catfish Edge he is asking if it is different with liver because liver is so soft will it be different density than cut bait\live
+Herps and inverts Videos ok, no
A use size 6 hookz small but effective enough to catch a 15 pounder flathead channel n carp
☝️
great tips . went from getting them 1 out of 4 to getting about 99% of the time. never going to use anything else then a circle for catfish

Chad Ferguson. That's right Fort Worth
What size hook is the red one
7/0
I just started fishing again for the first time in 27 years. Managed to catch a 15 lb flathead a few days ago on a Mustad 5/0 circle hook. But EVERY bite I have gotten since that fish on the same setup has ended with a missed fish. I have been fishing this one area about 2 hours a day for the last 4 days and the 5/0 circle hook I am using is just not hooking the fish. The fish would be on for a second and then get off! Very frustrating! So I am going to bump up the hook size and do the stuff in this video to see if it works.
Good luck!
Catfish and Carp have some excellent bank catfishing videos.
How do you texas rig a circle le hook?
Look here on my channel or website for slip sinker rig

will the catfish hook themselves or do you set the hook yourself like you would if you were bass fishing? and how high should the drag be set?

What hook?
How big of a circle hook would you recommend for targeting the smaller 1-5 lb catfish?
3/0 that’s wut i used the other night caught about 6 catfish on frozen shrimp
4/0 or 6/0 Triple Threat
Thank you
Can u tell me the what the blue thing is, and how it works. Thank
What blue thing?
What blue thing?
With the circle hook , don't try to jerk and set the hook. Let the fish hook itself and just reel it in. Since I prefer the smaller catfish in the 2 to 3 lb range , I prefer the 2/0 to 3/0 circle hooks and catch more fish. Eagle claw makes them in a small diameter material. It's very sharp and I have caught up to 15# fish on them. I mostly use carp or buffalo in about 3/4" cubes. be sure to remove the scales and hook it loosely through the edge but get it through the skin. It's tough and really is hard to get off. Good fishing!
You can set the hook with circle hooks too!
Are shrimps good bait for catfish and how about a 5/0 circle hook
They’re OK, check out the 6/0 triple threat
Catfish Edge what would you use for channel catfish
Check my video on best catfish baits
I'm dying. 3:40 they do work but I've never used them.
As in I've tried them, seen that they do work but I've not "used" them consistently because hooking the baits at an angle works as well and is less hassle.
What size is the hook? Is the diagram with the hook and quarter the size of your hook?
I mean should a quarter beable to fit in the hook like that

When is the proper time to set the hook
czcams.com/video/8DZQjPYL1dY/video.html
I gut hooked a few catfish on circle hooks, had to cut the line to let them go. Now I realize my circle hooks were too small.
He had a bite on the left fishing rod the hole time
LOL it happens sometimes
Suprena Ross ......actually no.....the boat was moving up and down from the waves.....that wasn't a "bite"
No he didnt. Weight was dragging across the bottom.
the purpose of circle hooks is the fish sets the hook. but you have to use actual "circle" hooks.
+GraveKhybetu BoundMuiuomg But that's not always the best option
Circle hooks work good for surf fishing where you set your pole in the holder and walk away.
how do i hook chicken gizzards without filling the gap?
+CoachHuGZ Try rolling them in gauze mesh
I use string/yarn regardless is it stays throughout the cast or not. Makes it more difficult for anything to remove the bait from the hook. I use circle sea 5/0 to 10/0
Haha I've literally been doing the opposite of everything you said. No wonder I'm losing fish left and right
I had a 2lbish channel cat swallow a 4ot circle hook today. Its in my freezer now but i did not intend on keeping a fish today.
Cut the leader and let it rust out.
