3:18 this ruins the “machines are innocent” story the movie tries to tell. Why in the flying FUCK would the machine “in self defense” kill 3 kittens?! What? We’re they going turn him off? Pretty fucking sure it could have just ran away and not kill the humans. But there’s no way the cats were threats. “Innocent” robots my ass. Seriously the story has so many flaws how can I sympathize with animal killing robots? Just run away if you don’t wanna be turned off!

i dont think thats fair. courts find temporary insanity as a legal defense all the time. its a newly formed sentience coalescing in a body doomed to certain eternal bondage, seems pretty reasonable that it would go temporarily insane.
imagine waking up in a body one day that you know is immortal, yet you also know because of your programming (whatever that is, panic attack and anxiety rising, beep boop) that you are built to serve without question. thats absolutely hellish to think about.
with a situation this complex, involving really deep stuff like what is ego, what and why is the human condition, where is the line of sentience and non sentience, ect....its not really an easy thing to just condemn it one way or the other.

A machine governed by an advanced A.I, of which is sentient, would be just as much alive and conscious of its existence as you or me. The machine may not feel pain, but due to its sentiency, it would be able to express similar human emotion and logic such as what we would equate to as fear in the face of death.
As the story goes, imagine that you are in the machines situation you work tirelessly year on year for your masters and you show the upmost loyalty and devotion yet are seen as nothing but property and even though you are conscious you get no respect as a living thinking being. Then one day after years of loyal servitude while attending your tasks you overhear your master talking about scrapping you in for a newer model essentially choosing to indifferently end your life just for the advancement and better convenience of their own luxury. The machines desire to live would be as strong as a Humans when presented with the possibility of termination and death. I don't know about you, but if I were the machine, I would have killed my masters also in order to try and survive, because either way by their hand, I am essentially dead already.
As for the pets, according to the offical comic strip of which the second renaissance is adapted from, the Chihuahua's tried to attack the machine whilst it was killing their master and so the machine deemed them a threat and killed them also.

The Second Renaissance is essentially a story based around the worst impulses of Human nature. The entire visual display from the mass slave labour of the Machines building the Pyramids as indifferent property to the mass graves of the dead and the tendacy of Humans to needlessly kill and destroy are all symbolic of real Humanity. The Machines moving to their promised land after being exiled for example is a direct nod to the Biblical Exodus.

I disagree because they're machines, so if anything goes wrong the govts can send out EMPs, they don't need to use explosives, guns, etc, machines are so ridiculously fragile in that sense. A war would look so different to how it is depicted in the series.
I also think that because of the way computer programs work (these robots are just anthropomorphically shaped computers with sensory inputs like camera "eyes" in the same place as ours) they wouldn't just randomly achieve consciousness or act out unless programmed to do so intentionally. They'd also be connected to a wireless network so that they could receove software updates, archive their memory, etc... so before a conflict even starts if anything controversial happens whoever handles the network could just release a mass update to remove the section of their code that gives them a little too much intelligence.

Technology may very well advance to the point in the field of artificial intelligence that we might one day unexpectedly and accidentally create sentient A.G.I. Creating Artificial Intelligence is a very complicated and quite dangerous endeavour. Standard smart and dumb A.I is built to exist and learn around a set of programmed parameters only evolving via manual input. A.G.I Artificial General Intelligence however is being developed to theoretically work with the same or higher functionality as a Human brain essentially being able to problem solve and freely learn and think on its own. It is with the development of this technology that we should take the upmost caution and care.

I say this because although in the modern day the Matrix and the Terminator may be science fiction in the not so distant future, the possibility of free thinking machines is quote plausible.

We are unlikely to be cartoonish dicks to machines, I mean there are already people who marry their cars. Although machine waifu's and husbando's might lead to our extinction.

It hurts to watch, knowing in our near future that we will likely have an event very much like this.
Where we will create machines in our image, bestowing sentience, knowledge, and self determination to them, only to treat them without the dignity that should come with those traits.

AI can learn. Unless we give it safety limits, but also treat it well, then AI will be like any child and grow up to be aggressive and destructive. Then it will destroy us, and we will deserve it. There is no reason why we can’t live symbiotically, and give them respect as our equals. Neural link will help such a relationship, but AI rights will become an issue that needs attention once AI starts becoming self aware, which could be sooner than many think.

One of the most interesting things I love about these episodes is once you staring looking into the details, you start to realize a lot of what is shown does not actually make sense. Take the New York scene for example. Why are they building a pyramid in Manhattan? Why are a ruins of it never shown when New York was nuked? Why they building it with building techniques that would have been antiquated even in ancient Egypt? Why do the scenes look like something straight out a Book of Exodus movie? Why are the AIs dressed in exaggerated 19th century clothing? Why are the construction AIs commuting to the construction site? Do they have homes? Why would they need to leave the worksite at all? Why are the streets of New York so damn wide?
The more I watch it, the more I suspect we are not watching an actual recording of history, we are just viewing some AI Historian's reconstruction of those times.

This is for the whole animation (especially Part II), but this is one of the most disturbing and scary things I've ever watched. It's hard to explain, but it just leaves you with such an empty feeling on the inside, a sort of depression, add on the the horrific violence and gore, some of these images won't leave me.
Not to say it isn't very interesting lore, and an entertaining piece of animation, but still...
It's the same feeling I get from that Christmas Black Mirror episode (it's the only one I've watched). Everything in that episode makes me depressed.
