  • This video shows you the first steps of getting my greenhouse set up for starting seedlings for the farm. We started breaking ground on Jan 17, 2021 and Got the plastic on 10 days later- Pretty nice!
    The main parts:
    Aluminum Frame and Steel Ground posts
    Double Later 6 mil UV Greenhouse Plastic
    2 used Metal Doors with Latches
    Lumber for Baseboard & Hipboard, Endwall Framing
    2 x 16'' aluminum Shutters (one with a 'Univent" wax cylinder opener)
    Exhaust Fan
    Inflation Fan (to blow air in between the two layers of plastic for extra insulation)
    Wiggle Wire Channel, Wiggle Wire (holds plastic to the structure)
    Outlets, wiring
    Wood scraps for building benches
    Hardware- carriage bolts, wood screws and self tapping tek screws mainly.
    What I forgot to say in the video:
    I buried a mouse- proof perimeter on each side of the structure just below soil level, one side it is a gravel trough lined with plastic, another side I used metal flashing buried into the soil, and the other sides I used a 4x4. Rodents can be a problem in a greenhouse- hopefully they stay away for a long time.
    Mulching around the greenhouse is great- if you do it thick enough with fabric or with wood chips- that will ensure that you never have to get a weed-wacker scary close to your greenhouse film!
    Since this structure is SO small, I decided a propane heater would have been overkill. Instead I opted for the rootzone heating system (will show details in another video!) and a little electric space heater for emergencies.

    ABOUT: Kat Johnson began learning about organic farming in 2005, as a high school intern on an organic farm in California. Since then, she has worked on ten organic vegetable, urban, and livestock farms in four states and gotten her hands dirty in all aspects of farming operations from hauling water, to management, sales. In 2021 she began designing her own ‘Farmlet’ In Floyd County and went full time as Kat The Farmer growing salad-centric crops along with creating value added products. Kat believes in transparency in growing practices, and in creating a community of growers that can share information so that we all succeed in creating more resilient farms, food systems, and the communities they support.

    Very nice...will this withstand high wind...like 70 mph? Thanks.

      I think it would depend on a few factors. If the prevailing wind will hit the building first it would work well as a baffle for the wind. Being attached to a rigid building definitely helps with structural support to some degree!

      It would almost certainly withstand higher wind than any stand alone greenhouse assuming equal design and materials

    Nice greenhouse! Do you or anyone viewing this know where to buy those metal ribs? They are much better for my purposes than a wood greenhouse.

      What part of the world are you located in? I might be able to recommend a tunnel or greenhouse manufacturing company to bend them custom for you. Aside from that, they sell chainlink fencing 'top rail' at many hardware stores and you can make your own hoop bender specific to the shape you are in need of.

    What is done to mitigate the absorption of humidity into the house. Humidity that through the facing wall and soffits migrates into the roof space creating mold and rot. Thank you

    • @katthefarmer
      @katthefarmer  Před 2 lety

      Such an important question! But, not one that I have encountered since the building I attached to is not a precious one and the soffits are fully vented outside of the greenhouse in the toolshed I have. ---I think a moisture barrier and insulation would be key. I would want to check with a home builder who understands how moisture migrates before I recommend anything though.

    How is it working 2 years later? Do you have an update video?

    • @katthefarmer
      @katthefarmer  Před rokem

      going strong, no update video yet... but if there is any specific questions I am happy to answer them! I did have to replace the plastic in the first season because of a BEAR (boo!) and I did add a stronger exhaust fan at the beginning of this season as well as automatic overhead watering which I have really been loving.
