I always thought it was super weird that Ryu could transform into "Ken" and Akuma" in this game. Pretty slick way to include them as extra characters tho.

Ken’s Alpha look that was also used in the MvC series is my favorite look for the character
Ken looks best when he looks like a girl from the Alpha series or when he looks like a straight up man like in Third Strike.

Technically, he has his Street Fighter II/III hair in this game. Pay attention to his sprite in Ryu's intro and ending, Ken doesn't have a ponytail and is a bit wilder than his Alpha sprite.
The best Ken is third strike ken. Every other ken is better than the banana boruto ken sf5
The art-work, the music, this game is totally one of the best of all time
The now loading screens are a nice touch. Wish those VS games did more of that. Like how rival schools has various now loading screens.

Ah man that sounds awesome, I remember when Disney got the rights to X-men/Fantastic Four the first thing Marvel did was start releasing X-men & FF comics again so if they really wanted to they could do this Vs Capcom Legacy collection.

It's my understanding that Disney owns *all* of Marvel including Spiderman, Venom, X-Men, Marvel Cinematic Universe, etc. So Capcom just needs to discuss this over with Disney basically and also PlayStation to get them to do a compilation disc that has arcade perfect versions compiled on 1 disc with GGPO online that has:
- X-Men vs. Street Fighter
- Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
- Marvel vs. Capcom
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2
My experiences with the older "vs" (the Marvel ones) is:

I don't have any of those older systems anymore and at the moment I just have a PS4 with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (on disc; GameStop exclusive) and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
After Capcom released the 30th Anniversary Collection for PS4, that's when I really really wanted and wondered why we don't have a "vs" collection.
I mean after how poorly Capcom did Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and basically stopped doing the DLC half-ass, it makes me wish they would *at least* do a collection and then actually do that rumored Marvel vs. Capcom 4.

Mvc 1 is the best Ryu ever. 3 full movesets and even returning to Ryu within one match or even round.
I think the best ryu is mvc infinite.

The weirdness of the early verse series was actually great! It was a complete 180 from Street fighter and darkstalkers so it felt fresh and brand new even if a lot of the assets were recycled...

It's funny max references the EX Games with DHC as in Japan the PS1 Marvel VS. Games are called EX. So X-MEN VS. Street Fighter EX Marvel VS. Street fighter EX and Marvel VS Capcom EX. They were versions especially made for ps1 limits from ground up. So they aren't arcade ports they had to do everything all over again.

I honestly hate mvc2. People. Would just spam assist sentinel and Dr.doom and the screen would be filled with projectiles. This was when the vs. Series was at its best
@@monkeypaw09 Its funny cause me and my friends would always play MvC2 for fun and it was a blast cause we never saw Doom/Sentinel/Cyclops/Storm. It becomes a really fun game and less repetitive when you take those characters out.
The huge roster and UI design was NICE but much like Capcom vs SNK 2, the switch to 3D stages wasn't my cup of tea! 😫

...and it is only on the PS1 version. Megaman has actually 4 special moves in this version! + extra outfits + play as the last boss (which is totally bad a!)
Oh, you could play as Onslaught in the Dreamcast version. You had to unlock all the other secret characters. He was his own sub-mode: Onslaught mode. Effectively a variant of Survival mode.

I used to play this all day everyday when I was a kid. Absolutely love this version glad max finally tried it.
Not only this was the best MvC,(only counting Mvc trilogy) but this game has the best Ryu of all Capcom fighting games.
I'll choose the Dreamcast version over the PS1 version all the time.
Here in the UK we have an electronics store that specialises in preowned games called CEX, I found a mint condition copy of MVC1 on PS1.
£50 well spent. Bloody expensive but I couldn’t pass it up.

I didn't realize this version was different from the arcade version! This was the only version I had since I had it on ps1 and not dreamcast. I also loved that you can pick your character twice. Nothing more satisfying then locking someone up with Gambits Royal Flush, then Super cancelling into a double Gambit Royal Flush. 99 hit combo easy.
Characters are just game mechanics and animations said a guy who helped to make MVCI now he's probably reconsidering his life because everyone is after that dude

Growing up my brother always handed my ass to me in fighting games, specifically SF and he always hated Akuma. I got MVC for PS and practiced the hell out of everyone and we had a match one day. The look on his face when I'm Ryu and I switch to Akuma's move set was worth all the effort.

Did anyone else ever feel weird about certain character combos? In rival schools as a kid I would only play groups of characters from the same school or if they were friends
totally! i'd make teams for the lore or bc of established best friends status, like ryu + cyclops and akuma + wolvey in Xmen vs SF, the shoto beam team in MVC2 (ryu, akuma, dark sakura), and androids 17 + 18 + 16 (DBFZ)

the ability to cancel supers into supers is why I loved the PS1 version the most. I'm not fond of capcom fighting games but that is something I wish would be in more games as it was just pure fun to do
You have got to appreciate the ost of this game. i remember putting in so many hours as a kid in playing in the vs series i had marvel super heroes vs street fighter mvc1 and 2 and my friend had xmen vs street fighter. i miss the 90s. so many memories.

Cross assault with assist (special hero) calls the assist constantly, being possible some sick combos, also the assist has unlimited uses.
You can unlock and plays as Onslaught too (in both sizes!), really dope if you think how they tried to rebuild the game to fit the playstation
Though it seems wierd the way that, in that ending scene, Sean says "Please be good to me" when asking Ryu to train him, there will be a good reason for it. I'd say it comes down to the translation taking what he probably said in Japanese a little too literally.
Chances are in the JP version he said " よろしくおねがいします / Yoroshiku onegaishimasu", which is something we'd say when meeting someone for the first time, and though the English translation would be pretty much what the in-game translation says, the sentiment doesn't really translate well when it's taken literally in English.
The sentiment from a Japanese person's perspective is more like saying, "I hope we form a good relationship" or "I'm looking forward to working with you", and it's meant to be a nice way of getting off on the right foot. It seems kinda funny when it's translated literally when "please be good to me" is not really a natural thing that we'd say when introducing ourselves in English.
I have a whole new respect for this version of the game and I want it!

Wow... I learned some stuff about the PS1 version of marvel vs. capcom today.. Now, for the first time ever, I want it. If they make a new collection, they should include both the PS1 and arcade versions of this game, take out the load times, and improve the framerate.

Ken should definitely have this axe kick at the end of his EX tatsu. Also add it to the end of his Ultra so you can axe kick them down into the dirt head first so you get the same plant in the ground effect as Alex's ultra. That'd be sick!

So glad you covered this version of MVC1. I grew up with this version in the early-mid 00's when I was eight. Learned how to do a hadouken, shoryuken, Raging Demons through this game.

I used to play this so much when I was middle school. I forgot about the extra's in this game.
This one was absolutely my favorite (alongside MVC2 of course). I thought the features of variable cross, 3 for 1 Ryu, hidden characters like Red Venom (Carnage)and Gold War Machine (Iron Man) and crossover mode was great to make up for not having the regular tag system and limited roster size. I feel like it’s one of those games where you’re pretty decent with everybody. Plus, I think the soundtrack was on point.
As I recall it, there is a button combination to start the game out as the Ken (or Akuma) version Ryu. I'm pretty sure of it. Can't remember how though....
Just hold select + any button for ken & hold start + any button for Akuma

You can cancel supers with OTHER SUPERS for as long as you have bar and a super you can cancel into. Shit was pure madness. If I could play you on this online I would max. This game was my shit back then

I think the ps1 versions served it’s purpose as you could learn the characters easier and is easier for new players to understand
I remember in X-Men vs Street Fighter you could pull the special cancel with Gambit and rack up a quick 99 hit combo spamming royal flush.
Remember playing this at friends house on their pc emulated with snes controllers back in early 2000's. They were too good and made me rage because they could time their hits to interupt supers.
It would be great that Max played as megaman with the magnetic shockwave, pulling some combos

Just goes to show, just because a port is "inferior" doesn't mean you can't appreciate it for what it is.
This might bee _too_ unrealistic but I've always wanted a fighting game where the speed is like this, you can have 2 on 2 (or 3 on 3), and the combat is a mix of sfv mysterious mod + mvc infinite (without the stones) + a little bit of mvc2 with special effects like snk vs capcom 2 but not pixelated.

IIRC, if you have a character partner, while blocking if you do a forward fireball, it will call an assist from your character partner
