I just learned about Lovebites and band maid about the same time earlier this year and I struggled in the beginning which I liked more (no matter what they both amazing). In the end band maid won for me because the more songs I listen from them the more I loved them! They have songs for almost any mood I’m in unless I need to listen to power metal. Then it’s Lovebites 100% For everything else it’s band maid but glad you like both!

Lovebites is definitely on the metal side of things while Band-Maid is more maid rock. There was an interview where band-Maid said that there were many
Good girl bands in the metal genre but that’s not what they wanted to do.
As far as guitarists go, the Lovebites duo are probably more technically accomplished, but the synergy of band-maid’s members on and off stage is unmatched. Their joy on-stage is incredibly infectious.
For me band-Maid #1 by a long shot.

Band-Maid were my introduction to Japanese music in 2015 (with their video for "Thrill"). Happy to say they weren't "just" a spring board, but have remained one of my favorites. Their music and their live performances just put a smile on my face.

My Rock n Roll starts with Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, so when I heard Band-Maid my reaction was Rock n Roll is back! Their skills, talent, and professionalism is on a higher level than most of our western entertainment bands/groups. As to the use of English, it is common in a Japanese song for English. Same with Kpop. But another reason is Japanese use English words for many things as they and the Koreans rather than creating words for new things they just use the English. An example is ice cream in Korean is ice cream.

Lovebites? Well, yes, they're technically proficient, but musically they're ploughing a narrower furrow than Band-Maid. I'm a progressive rock fan rather than a metalhead (well, apart from progressive metal, which is basically progrock with a bit more attitude!) so please be alert for bias on my part.
What draws me to the maids is their eclecticism, in that they happily mix a multitude of genres - pop, punk, metal, funk, blues, jazz and probably others I haven't picked up on yet - into their music with promiscuous glee. That, and the fact that they never ever repeat themselves (choruses for example are not copy and paste jobs, each one is subtly different) as well as the intricate, shifting patterns the Holy Trinity create between themselves when they play gladden my heart.

    • @bethrobinson94

I am Japanese, and I agree your comment about "Lovebites". Lovebites is the band type of"X-JAPAN".Because their music type is simple (poor) melody line with complex arrangement. So I don't like "Lovebites". BAND-MAID is hyper female Rock band in the world.

Band Maid is all over the place sonically. Never a dull moment with them. The catalog is immense.

Excellent Assessment. You're right about their use of English in the chorus. They do that so they can have audience participation in western countries. I'm a fan of both Band Maid and Lovebites. To me, Lovebites showcases the pinnacle of technical ability, whereas Band Maid showcases the pinnacle of songwriting. The lead guitarist (Kanami) writes the songs (Miku, rhythm guitar/vocal, writes the lyrics) and always changes the patterns through the verses, so as you're listening to a Band Maid song, it's constantly changing so you never get bored. Once she has the foundation of the song, all the band members add their input. That's the reason why they sound so cohesive as a band. Every single song they do, whether it's a studio recording or live performance, is that way. No doubt you'll notice that as you "binge listen". Cheers!

    • @RevStickleback
      @RevStickleback Před 4 lety +3

"They do that so they can have audience participation in western countries". They've been doing that long before they played outside Japan, so it seems unlikely. You see bits of English everywhere in Japan, even in places that are unlikely to be ever seen by western tourists. I think English is just seen as kind of cool.

    • @snakewhisperer1
      @snakewhisperer1 Před 4 lety +3

I have heard Miku mention something to that effect in an interview. And of course, we know Miku is set on "World Domination" (lol), so it could be something she planned for. But you're right. The other Japanese rock bands incorporate English phrases as well. Then of course Lovebites is entirely in English. So yes, maybe they think it's cool. Personally, I think it's cool hearing a different language over rock for a change.

Some English words & phrases don't translate very well from Japanese. The English letters L & R don't even exist in the Japanese language, so BAND-MAID do a hell (no pun intended) of a job when singing them in English.

    • @snakewhisperer1
      @snakewhisperer1 Před 4 lety +3

Agreed! I appreciate the fact they make the effort. Their English is WAY better then my Japanese. Even the mistakes are cute and endearing and makes me appreciate the effort that much more. You’ve got to check out their instrumental Onset czcams.com/video/iB0oGNY_gzc/video.html
Here’s some further info on them and how they came to be
Band Maid is a Hard Rock band who incorporate several elements like metal, punk, pop and even blues into their music.
The main instrumental section Kanami- lead guitarist, MISA- bass and Akane- drums are all professionally trained musicians who have been playing multiple instruments since as young as 4 years old. They are in their late 20s now.
Kanami is also the one who writes all of their music while Miku- rhythm guitarist/backup vocals, does the lyrics alongside Saiki- main vocalist.
The band was started by Miku in 2013 who found Kanami on the internet and recruited her. Then Kanami got Akane to join in, as they knew each other and had played together in previous occasions. In turn, Akane recruited MISA who graduated from the same music institute as her.
Later on, Miku having realised her voice wasn’t suitable for Hard Rock passed over the vocals to Saiki who joined them through an audition.

The MV is good for this one, but weirdly slightly too quiet. Band Maid are the sort of band that if you like one or two songs you'll find at least 30-40 others you'll love as well, and I mean that quite literally. They hardly put out any singles, but they have so many songs you'll hear and think "this must be one of their main singles".
There is one song that for some reason is better in the MV. It's also one of their more popular songs, it seems, and that's "Dice" czcams.com/video/ZpAYnVJX9CY/video.html The MV does contain a rather creepy doll, but don't let that put you off.

MISA!!!! MISA!!!!!! MISA!!!!!!! The best Badass Bass Assassin. My Dark Queen. You picked a good video to start your Band-Maid journey. Band-Maid is not a stereo typical Japanese female band. These 5 ladies are a punch you in your face Hard Rock band. Don't let the Maid outfits fool you. It's part of "the gap" that many Japanese bands try to achieve. You have to see their Live videos. This MV is good and you get to see how much fun these musicians have on stage and with their fans. All 5 musicisans are very talented. I have seen them in concert here in LA twice. Reminds me of the Rock music I gew up with in the 70's. React to the Live versions of Play, Onset, Moratorium, Don't you Tell Me, Take Me Higher, Puzzle (electric and acoustic) These ladies will earn that 10 ;)

Welcome aboard, Beth. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of rock n’ rollers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 25 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (sample “Domination” czcams.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/video.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: czcams.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/video.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: czcams.com/video/4uIYBkAybCI/video.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: czcams.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/video.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Yes, Band-Maid WILL become your favorite band, their writing, technical skills and all around cohesiveness is apparent in every song. I've been listening to rock since the 1950's and over the last 30-40 years became bored by the repetitive, bland, banal music. Seeing them live is the next step but I think seeing them in their own back yard is the place to be as the Japanese audience are enthusiastic and can add to the whole experience. Bands such Baby metal, love bite and the Wagakki band produce excellent shows in front of their home audiences!! As for language it has never bothered me, I know a lot of people will not listen these bands because they do not sing in English, for me this is pathetic and narrow mindedness. I can safely say a lot of music I listen to come from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia and now Japan, China and Korea, the music is everything and as for language check out the translated lyrics or as for me I speak Russian so that is not a problem!! As it is a very interesting topic, I write the consideration of the Japanese speaking Japanese.
Some people say, but it is not a special thing that puts basic English in the lyrics for a Japanese artist.
You may say that it is a natural thing in Japan.
miku is writing the lyrics of the band maid.
    Her Japanese vocabulary excels.
Ability to include emotion in the lyrics euphemistically is the talent that the professional songwriter cannot easily imitate.
There is a view of the world peculiar to her there.
It is difficult to hear all even if even a Japanese hears the Japanese part once.
This is because it talks fast, and it gets into the next bar.
It is necessary to look at the lyrics card to completely understand it.
In addition, the usage of words is difficult, and it cannot be often understood to see the lyrics card when I do not consider either.
I seem to read a totally high haiku.
One of the classical literature that Japan is traditional with "haiku."
Poetry to put the biggest emotion with the number of limited few letters.
As for about 100% of songs of the band maid, a melody is made earlier.
miku adds poetry to the music that kanami wrote, but the number of the letters of the poetry to put on a melody may not come nicely.
It is Japanese POP, ROCK, usual practice of HIP-POP that it is easy to sing a part replacing with English then or is easy to remain in the impression to a listener.
Therefore I do not make a part English for easiness of acceptance in foreign countries, and the Japanese artist uses this technique extremely naturally.
Then I said in the interview of the radio program with miku, but do not seem to make a title English for the recognition in foreign countries.

Haha...this was fun. I have been obsessed with Band-Maid, since I first heard them. Then I discovered Lovebites and obsessed is the word. I play them every day, just like I done with Band-Maid.. =D Lovebites is as addictive. Very different music, but irresistable! Pity its very expensive to be obsessed with japanese bands... :D

I prefer their live stuff as it seems like they feed off of the energy from the crowd as much as the crowd responds to them, and one of the reasons for the simple choruses is to encourage the crowd to join in and the English lyrics have been added more and more as the band's English has improved.

Japan has been for a long time a haven for rock bands where fans are obsessive about the music, Judas Priest, Malmstein and Kiss to name a few and have striven to emulate their heros ie EZO who where an '80s band under the watchful eye of Gene Simmons!! To be honest they were ok but over the years Metal/Rock has been perfected in Japan to what we see today where we now obsess over them ie Lovebites, Babymetal and Band metal have virtually become household names. Band maid are now the epitome of what I have listened in the '80s and it is better!! This is the band you listen to before going out on a friday night like AC/DC was for me. Your 9 is not misplaced but a journey into the past will help in a better understanding 😎

They do have a couple of songs that are fully in English. In this song there are more English lyrics, they'll become more apparent the more you listen to it. Plus they have no bad songs. Some are more "poppy" than others. Those tend to be the earlier songs, when they were finding their footing. As they grow and evolve, they tend to get heavier. They have their "ballad-ish" songs too, but they have some songs that border on thrash metal too.

Hmmm, about the Lyrics....what do I do as a German???? Aaaaah good that I did learn English in school, so that I can understand the few English words or the complete song, when they sing it in English.
I have a honest question to all the english speaking guys here,iIs it really that important to understand the Lyrics? Sure the words transport a story and it would be nice to understand it, but everybody can read the Lyrics somewhere so that it is clear what the girls want to tell us. I never did check the Lyrics, because I enjoy the music and I'm totally happy with it.
Pls think about that Millions still do not understand English language and anyway are happy to listen to English songs.
Not to say, that often it is not possible to understand even the Lyrics in English.
Comparing a band to another band by listening only to one song is not fair. In my mind Bandmaid is in the moment the world best Rockband, especially because their Live perforamance is such a high quality. Rock music is not clean, so it has to be Live and that all the fans always recommend the Live versions, tells you everything.
Finally a good reaction video, athough I do not agree to all you said. Looking forward to watch your next reaction.

7:46 I really like LOVEBITES too. Those women can play their instruments very well, better than the women in BAND-MAID, but BAND-MAID has a punkish sound that is missing from modern rock bands..... and it's a beautiful thing to behold. 8:39 The Japanese incorporate English into a lot of things (about 10% of words used in Japan come from English). Using English in advertisements gives it more prestige in the markets. 9:30 The problem I have with the live version of this song is the sound mixing. More often than not, their live versions are better than the studio versions - a sign of something truly special.

👍 not unlike lovebites, who rock, thrash, & symphonic prog, yet you still know what you’re getting, now you know what BandMaid is about. Lots of variety within each song, the occasional curveball, but pretty much all good. They’re kinda the Motley Crue or Guns N’ Roses (or sabbath, or rise against) to lovebites’ Metallica, testament, Helloween, nightwish...
Putting English in is a very common thing in japan, unfortunately we don’t really hear much of it, but the Japanese audience itself also eats it up, “cool” (think megadeth, Rush, queensryche sing in French)
Wow, I was gonna guess 20%, But this song is more like 40%! Glad I looked it up, makes my point, and I even know the accent and knew to listen

A challenge then, to your tolerance for the weirdness factor. Arguably the best musicians from the Jfemetal scene, but here are songs from two ends of their funk pop electro metal spectrum
Doll$Boxx - Dragonet, Fuki penned & sung tune about last dragon banished to cry blood from the the stars forever, drummer sings in English “dominated the ancient world wars, his name is Dragonet” czcams.com/video/nH4TEyJwpm4/video.html
Same musicians without Fuki, doing ending theme song for Dragonball Kai, Gacharic Spin - Don’t Let Me Down, host mentions bass player playing like Primus and spinning her bass on her belt like ZzTop czcams.com/video/IGJ-zNOW4U8/video.html

At some point you have to try these musicians; with Fuki they are Doll$Boxx, they have a nine video series, numbers 3&4 have them in maid/server outfits (6months before BandMaid’s conception, Take My Chance, and Monopoly), and each tell mini stories, as well as Karakuri Town. Without Fuki they are Gacharic Spin, and might be too funk dance synth pop rave hysterical for your tastes, but they’re quality, worth checking. That said, I’m immediately taking you to their storyline videos, which can be cringe, but if you like fantasy, anime, maybe power rangers?, then it’s got a chance. The songs are on CZcams, but for full length MVs, I’ll link you to DailyMotion, hopefully recording process is same for you?
Music Battler is title track (but maybe 4th video?) from what they call their first album upon singing to Victor records (they’d been around 5 yrs, 3 albums, plus signed separately as dollsboxx), it’s campy, but the music is very them
    www.dailymotion.com/video/x38d7xh
And from the same release, they continued the trend of letting very popular guitarist TomoZo use her girly voice in the Fantasy series of songs (one per album), Final Na Fantasy is her revealing that she is not a 17yr old pirate witch, but in fact a 100,000,014yr old alien from Nicorin, scouring the galaxy for the best band to join ... you’ll see 😉🎸💃😎 www.dailymotion.com/video/x3kfmdu

Their live stuff is top shelf, but some of their MV are great intros to their sound and look-try Real Existence, Dice, or Thrill. Repetition is not typical for Band Maid. Choruses and musical phrasing often change throughout song. They even evolve and change old songs over time. Domination has intentionally changed from earlier versions. How many bands do that? Band Maid sounds more hard rock to me vs Lovebites' power metal style. To each their own. Thanks for reaction!

Next to Chinese, English seems to be the language Japan borrows from the most. So it's not unusual to see a few english words here and there. Band-Maid uses it more than most acts, I think, because they're aware they have a sizable international fanbase.

Urban conversational Japanese contains a fair amount of English so it's not actually added for our benefit. As such, pronunciation and usage doesn't necessarily make sense to a native English speaker. You no doubt noticed (😂) Saiki telling (ordering) the audience to "SAY", a good example of this word borrowing.
