In an interview, Saiki (lead vocal) explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE" first, and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?".
I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it😏
"はて?" can be translated as "What?"😉

  • @BillHallisey
    @BillHallisey Před 21 dnem +12

Next one up needs to be "Protect You", their music video release. Don't get confused but the "Ou lala, lalas" is actually Japanese for "we're gonna kick your ass!".

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Nov.26, last year. Very exciting 3-hour-40-minute-long show with 33-song setlist. (Happy fatigue thereafter 😄)
Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

If you think of the Misa/Kanami bass/lead battle as a couple arguing the structure makes even more sense. And it makes it sound even more expressive

The “?” Is, as far as it’s been described to me by native speakers, is a pun. The inflection that a ? Adds to the word makes it sound like a Japanese word

Thanks for the fun reaction, gents, glad you appreciated the aggression of the song! Subbed! I'm going to recommend the Puzzle live video for your next one.
The question mark on the title Hate? is a sort of linguistic double-entendre... I'll let Saiki explain:
Interviewer: By the way, what does the question mark in the title signify?
Saiki: The title is written as 'HATE?', but I read it as 'ha-te' [ハテ] (haha).
    Interviewer: 'Ha-te'?... Oh, like '...huh?'
Saiki: Yeah, like "I keep using this 'hate' word, huh..."

Great reaction guts and the singer Saiki wrote the lyrics; there was a lot of cheating occurring during covid lock down reported in the press at that time and Saiki was pissed. The singer LISA (a friend of drummer Akane) was also affected by this as her husband was caught cheating and created a big scandal. They're not afraid to be clear in their lyrics when needed :D

Band Maid is notorious for delivering surprises in the live setting. I don’t know of another band who considers a show with such reverence. As the place where each member of the band is arriving to serve the fans. It’s a different cultural dynamic here.
They will write extra lyrics, add unique intros, and as you see here, insert a bass v guitar interlude.
Thanks for mentioning the next reaction. “From Now On.” Hehe. You have no idea what you signed up for 😂
One small, respectful bit of feedback: your voice volume is much higher than the video music volume. I say this only because I always listen to “From Now On” at full, maximum volume. You should, too 😊

It's amazing how Band-Maid has rewritten the laws of nature: Hate brings Love! 😖--->🎀--->😍
    Some news...
-- The Warning, a world-famous band from Mexico, and BAND-MAID recently completed their amazing 2-man, collab concert in Japan with the introduction of their new song, “Show Them.”
-- BAND-MAID released a new song, "Bestie," co-written with Mike Einziger of INCUBUS! The MV dropped May 1, and their new song, "Protect Me," written for Anime (AniMaid), dropped 07/07/24. And Band-Maid's new album is nearly ready.
-- BAND-MAID HALL TOUR 2024 -- July 5, 2024 (Fri) Osaka, Fenice Sakai Main Hall, -- July 14, 2024 (Sun) Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, Kanagawa -- July 21 OSAKA GIGANTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL 2024 -- Aug 16 RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL 2024 in EZO -- Aug 17 SUMMER SONIC 2024 -- Sept. 8, 2024 TREASURE 05X Festival in Laguna Beach, Gamagori

Saiki (lead singer) wrote the lyrics for this one and they're pretty blunt. I see the title as the starting point of the interaction, with the male saying something like, wait, what was that you said about me? "Hate?" And Saiki proceeds to answer. She gives him exactly one more line -- "Why don't you try to understand me?" -- sung by Miku (rhythm guitar, backup vocals), but the reply is just more linguistic nut-kicks. 😅
