  • In this video I paint and weather the Warrior IFV in 1/35 scale from Meng. I use AK Real Colors to paint the body of the vehicle in Light Stone, which is the standard colour for the British Army. Then I attempt to weather the vehicle to look something like the way it appeared in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can find the kit here: amzn.to/370Fk7H

    The red and yellow panels on the back bins are to make them hi-viz in peacetime along with a yellow flashing light on the roof ala AA or RAC 😊 We had them on our 432s as well and prior to going mobile they were unceremoniously removed, hole dug in the sand and buried. The different colours of the vehicles were most likely the paint we could get hold of at the time hence a major lack of uniformity. The first few pictures were from Gulf War 1 (Op Granby) and that was certainly the case.

      Thanks mate - I always appreciate first hand info! I've heard some interesting stories about "making do" paint jobs for Op Granby - especially for some of the aircraft.

      @@ModelNerd The first 7 Bde units to arrive in theatre were based in Germany and the vehicles arrived painted black and green. After 'issue' paint ran out some of the loggies were despatched to the local markets and stores to find sandy colour paint as well. They were a bit better organised by the time 4 Bde and 1 Div came out a couple of months later. Forgot to say - I loved the model build, I can only aspire to this kind of standard and can hardly wait until the next one👍

    I enjoyed watching these 2 videos, the only thing I can say negative about this build is, where you placed the cooler, it would block the drivers view, apart from the fact there's no lid on the cooler and the water would only be good for making tea with. But as it's a British vehicle maybe that's the idea "heat the water in the bottles in the hot desert sun for a quick brew up when we stop". It's great to see someone building British Armour.

      @@ModelNerd From the bulletproof glass I've seen the color is appropriate especially contrasting against the yellowish main color. Maybe a tad more greenish but that's a matter of taste and of course interpreting source material. Photos often lead us astray due to whatever white balance the photographer was using at the moment.
      Overall I love this build- you got my upvote mainly for your restraint in weathering. Might I suggest a dark undercolor coat using one of those random jagged hole masks to get some variation in the final coat? I realize you used more "final" coats than usual which could have washed that out, but it's far less tedious than the mottling technique using an airbrush.
      That building- it looks a lot like the one Night Shift did in scratchbuild format, and your kit probably was made from the same source photographs. I say that because of the signage.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you Mark. It's good to know that about the glass because I haven't really seen much of it in real life examples etc. That's a really good suggestion about the jagged masks - especially since I recently acquired some! For some reason I used to do a lot of the black and white technique, but then I stopped using it without replacing it with anything. I'll definitely give your idea a try in my next armour build. Thanks mate!

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 Před 2 lety

      @@ModelNerd I've seen armored glass in armored car windows and on US military vehicles in local Veteran's Day parades.
      The color seems to vary by manufacturer or contract requirements or something else. The military types have a definite blue or green color depending on I don't know what (I haven't seen the shade in that kit but I haven't seen any British armor up close either), sometimes with a reddish sheen indicating dichroic properties (passes some colors but reflects others). I have no idea on how to get that sheen other than by replacing all the parts with dichroic film that's available on eBay.
      About the masks- synchronicity or coincidence? ;>)
      I've noticed several CZcams modelers evolve their shading techniques similarly, starting with straightforward white-on-top-black-on-bottom, progressing to more elaborate methods like false shadowing. Many settle on the mottling technique but I'm too lazy to even try it.

    Don't know if anyone has tried this. For my next 1/35 armour model I wanted to press the tracks into coarse sandpaper, say 60 or 80 grit, to provide a distressed surface, I think this would work especially well with the rubber pads on modern AFV's.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 2 lety +1

      I think that makes a lot of sense. Rubber pads and rubber road wheels must get a lot of damage, but they're always molded perfectly by the companies - which I'm grateful for, of course :)

    • @silentumexcubitor6747

      120 or 220 grit might work better. Or start gently with the 60 & 80, to make the deepest "damage", then go to the 120, etc....
      Also, after you wash off any sanding dust, a little "lick" with Tamiya Extra Thin Cement can tone down the effect slightly....
