  • In this special St. Patrick's Day episode of "Behind the Build," we'll take a look at one of my all-time favorite scale model builds - my Irish Guards Sherman Firefly IC! 🍀
I built a lot of M4 Sherman models over the years, and this offering from Asuka Models has to be one of the best ones I've picked up over the years. We'll talk a little bit about the history behind this iconic tank, as well as some of the techniques I used to replicate this Sherman Firefly IC of the Irish Guards.
You can check out this kit & some other great offerings from Asuka here: spruebrothers.com/search-resu...

Happy St. Paddy's Day to you too, Hank! Fireflies are awesome, and I always love the great hessian netting and other camo the Brits used throughout the NW Europe campaign. Just a note--not all Fireflies based on the M4 used the composite hull. There were just plain ol' Firefly IC's as well.

My uncle served with 4th Staffs Yeomanry and was a gunner on a Sherman Firefly.
He said that the most nerve wracking experience was to go Panther or Tiger hunting during the Normandy campaign and you had to be far quicker to get your rounds off at your identified target otherwise you would be brewed up. Even though the Firefly was armed with the 17 pounder it did have its drawbacks - the noise when the gun was fired was deafening and most Firefly crews suffered with either partial or near complete hearing loss , the other was the smoke given off by the cordite which my uncle said could be suffocating .
Their biggest fear were in fact the panzerjaegers - particularly those Grenadiers armed with panzerfausts etc , my uncle claimed that he lost a lot of friends that way.
The Irish Guards were founded in 1900 and the island of Ireland was part of the UK back then , however come 1939/40 a lot of Irish guardsmen came from Northern Ireland and Liverpool as they do now as a former Welsh Guardsman I served with a few 'Micks" and most were scousers (Liverpudlians).
Another fabulous model you've built there and enjoyed your video , I've recently finished building a Firefly for a Operation Goodwood diorama. I look forward to your next video.

Use a yoghurt pot foil lid but one like off a muller rice that kinda foil for srips of hessian tape mate! It's got great texture and looks amazing when on the vehicle all painted up! It's a pity CZcams doesn't let you post thumbnail pics in the comments eh you'd be very impressed with the effect! I was when I was shown it now I use nothing but!

In the eighties spent a Exercise with the Royal Air Force Regiment who operated Scorpion light tanks order by Iran before the Revolution, so they given to the RAF Regt.
They were the 5 star version with air conditioning, internal tank for drinking water, NBC filters, and plug/ socket for a kettle.
When ever there was break in the battle the kettle was turned on for tea, and for me coffee.

Building this firefly right now your video put me in the mood to crack some of my fireflys out the stash butnonly had 3 rfm kits and a China clipper from asuka but managed to pick up both asuka firefly kits last week so just adding some 3D printed light guards n stuff but yeah asukas can't beat them! I'm just back from my mate's model shop it's next to the house lol but got ammos British paint set and picked up a set of AFV clubs T62 track's for rubber bands there really nice I wanted the option of track's to use I've got 3 sets now the all metal type the T48 and T62 and the spare ones out the meng jumbo kit already built up with duckbills! I had 2 boxes of Broncos duckbills part1 and 2 short and long but the long ones have went for a walk out the stash! Can't find them anywhere been through about 100 boxes there not there so annoyed! They have to be somewhere but yeah that's whare I am at the moment boggies getting done now and I've scratch built the mud scrapers for the front 2 boggies same as what's stored on the front of the M32B1 arv the firefly I'm copying has them on the front in Normandy and thinking of adding the hedgerow cutter but not sure? I've got one there from a Cromwell and one in the hedge row asuka kit but using that for the m4a1!

He owns my local model shop he's always impressed with how I've come on in the past 3 year's starting on armour he's wanting me to represent the shop at the club lol but it's always like your own builds aren't good enough but starting to notice when looking back at my photo's I've got of them all in different stages they looks absolutely fantastic! Saint Patrick's Day or Saint Paddy's day, but NEVER Saint Patty's day! Patty is a girls name, it's short for Patricia. Every time I hear a North American refer to it as saint Patty's day I hear 6 million Irish people grinding their teeth and swearing and I'm over 300 miles from Ireland.
