Finally the day has arrived where I review one of the most critically
acclaimed stories to ever come out of Japan. A series troubled in its production,
experienced in its telling and written by one of Japan's best mangakas
Yoshihiro Togashi. I'm Totally Not Mark and it's time for me to analyse the
adventures of Gon, Killua, Kite & Netero as they journey through The Chimera Ants Arc squashing as many of those dumb ant monsters as they can! Welcome everyone to HUNTER x HUNTER!

I’m happy you touched on Togashi’s health because it’s something people tend to not take as seriously as they should. After the passing of Kentaro Miura, it made me reflect on how much we should be appreciating the mangaka’s of the story’s we deeply love and care about. Many mangaka tend to over work themselves, barley getting time for their personal lives which lead to many health problems. Spending hours upon hours, days upon days, weeks upon weeks, you get the point, we should be respectful of all breaks mangaka take because it’s more of a necessity than just simply resting. Just drawing and coming up with a story, characters and worlds just because of their dedication to their fans and series, add Togashis severe back problems to a job like being a mangaka and it’s easy to see why Togashi goes on hiatus. I really do hope he gets better and takes his time with hxh because Togashi’s health is more valuable than hxh coming back.

This so much. While I would like hxh to continue it's disgusting how people talk about togashi and mangaka in general like he's just a machine to pump out entertainment with no regard to his emotions. Honestly I'm glad he stopped. It was time for him to catch up to himself, mentally and physically. If he wants to stay inside and play dragon quest great. He worked so hard and honestly if I was in his position I don't know if I would ever come back. I'll take his word for it when he says he'd finish it. As long as he's okay with it I'll wait

@@lifeloverNorris there was a new dragon quest release that lines up eerily well with the time for the latest hiatus. I honestly hope togashi is in good health but I strongly suspect he is playing dragon quest.
I take his mental health issues very seriously and think he deserves all the time off he wants, but from everything I have read this is not anything close to the issues muira had. Muira had serious back and heart problems that kill people every day. Togashis problems, while serious, have never been disclosed to the public in the form of a diagnosis.
I would also like to note the strong suspicion of fans that read hunter hunter weekly had when they read the volumes. A great many people think his wife, who mad sailor moon, fixed the art for the volumes. There are a ton of indications that she did this for togashi. Background effects, the hair, the eyes. They all change pretty strongly in these volumes.
Again, not judging, just letting you guys no that as fans this is very different from berserk as far as the community knows. Togashi could just be very private and not disclosing his physical ailments, but at this point I don't think he's finishing the story. The last 10 or so chapters have been really really bad.

He doesn't lack perseverance or fire, the man has mad multiple series and brought entertainment and joy to countless people with his art. Meanwhile dicks like you critique him for putting his personal life before some fictional characters he invented. You are not owed an ending to this story. It can suck to not know whats happening to characters you care about for so long but a regular schedule isn't worth the man being miserable.

@@justinlynes6549 he should honestly just come out and say he doesn't want to work on it anymore and/or cancel it. The problem with him is that he never allows anyone to know his status on HxH, and thus, people make assumptions (most of the time, unwarranted) about him since he appears to be slacking. But in reality, he's just enjoying life as much as he can. So yeah, he should take time for himself and find any way to make himself as happy as possible, but also, he shouldn't just leave his work without even letting his audience know that if he's even gonna continue it or not. If he just said he'd stop working on it, it'd make everything much easier for everyone, especially himself. People will be sad, and there will unfortunately be some outrage towards him, but people will soon just put it behind them and move on. But since he's constantly kept everyone in a state of limbo, people will endlessly complain about it until a status is given on the series.

But that in general, there is a middle ground when it comes to courage or strategic retreat. Killua ran for the wrong reasons, if anything putting his and his friends life above all else is his weakness. But coming across such an adversary and living with such valuable intel for the next group to utilize is important. The fact that they did not take Killua's fear seriously is what leads to suit guy bowing out before the big raid, and arguably the difficulty from there could have been alleviated somewhat had they taken him seriously.

My favorite part of the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc is that it really expands on the overall world of Hunter X Hunter. It shows that the world doesn't revolve around Gon and Co, and that the world they live in is really a brutal and merciless one. This is the living, breathing world affecting everyone in it and our heroes being dragged into a conflict that would've happened whether they existed or not.

Though the simple naming pun concept applies to others not just saiyans Piccolo for example and Demon king Piccolos demons for example were named after various instruments. Even now he uses pun for newer characters (I wont spoil if you have not seen the latest in Dragon Ball super) its just a naming style that he uses.

I think the most effective thing this arc does, which few shounen ever do, is how it displays fear.
The Chimera Ants truly feel like a world ending threat because literally everyone who encounters them knows damn well how outmatched they are. Seasoned warriors who've fought countless foes buckle from just sensing their Nen.
In a normal shounen, most characters would just be like Gon, they'd power up and power through, never faltering. But that just doesn't cut it here, they simply couldn't win without a solid plan of action and without the small handful of brave and skilled warriors they had to offer, mankind would just be over if that first defence fell.
It's brilliant, it makes humanity feel almost like the Rebels in Star Wars, a pathetic and weak force that can only just barely stand up to the Empire, who have to make desperate plans and exploit any weakness or advantage they can to have even the smallest chance of success.

    • @JB-sc1tg
      @JB-sc1tg Před 2 lety +13

Another thing (often overlooked) that this arc does really well is dramatic irony, when we as viewers know something that the characters don't. More specifically, both the protagonists amd antagonists of this arc will make assumptions, only for them to be off the mark. I think it really helps ground the story and create subtle nuances that are rarely seen in other shounen. The example that pops in my mind is when *SPOILERS* Pitou says, "Is he headed for the king?" after Gon transforms. The audience knows that Gon couldn't care less about the king at that point. But Pitou has a brief moment of panic, rushing through the corridor, when he assumes that's where Gon is headed. It's little moments like this that are sprinkled throughout the arc that elevate it above other shounen arcs, imo.

This same character who was killing kids and eating their brains? He did nothing to help Gon and Killua or any other character grow. The only ones who interacted with him died and were already at the end of their stories. He wasn't a complex character, he was boring.

At the same time, the point in the story where this review leads up to these characters and scenes might not have shown their significance yet, especially because there is a lot more heavy character development to come. I always thought Killuwa's apprehension was a good thing. Most shonen protags are SUPER bold and jump head first i to situations without thinking or realizing their limitations. • @PathBeyondTheDark

You are right about the average shonen, albeit in Japan it is seen as beneficial to throw yourself head first into your work and dreams. The truth is somewhere in the middle, a fine line you must tread mostly for your own mental wellness but of course, also for your own safety in dire situations.
I have to be frank, I'm not sure HxH appreciates this middle of the road truth. I want to give it the benefit of doubt considering Togashi's mental health issues and being all too aware what over working oneself can lead to, but Gon's attitude is rarely given the criticism that Killua's is with dialog. This might be due to Japanese tradition, and Togashi's response to this is to show the shortcomings through visuals, things like characters dieing due to overconfidence, make it nuanced rather then overt. Still I would really appreciate a firm stance being taken, but tbf I have not gone passed the Chimera Ant arc so perhaps Togashi does take a firmer stance with Gons predicament (avoiding spoilers).

    • @andrews9695
      @andrews9695 Před 2 lety +5

@@PathBeyondTheDark I think what happened to Gon is a representation of what the author feels about himself. I think he pushed himself past what was healthy and burnt himself out and like Gone the author fell ill and now like how Gon can't use his nen anymore I think the author feels like he can't put passion into HxH anymore. Just like how Gon burned his potential for a burst of power I think the author feels like he put all his effort and had an unhealthy lifestyle that lead to his own demise. Though like Gon who got saved and has the potential to come back to the story as Gon technically still has nen he just can't fell it; I think the author holds out hope that he can finish the story in a good way and reignite some of his passion along the way.
And though Gon did harm himself to do what he did I think in a way it might have actually been good he did it as well as he probably would've died in that exact scenerio if he didn't and Pitou seemed like the most powerful of the Royal Guards and I think she would've killed everyone and who knows what would've happened with Pitou after the kings death as I don't think she would've been poisened enough to die just from being close to the king as the other Royaal guards died from entering the blast zone and considering her abilities to heal maybe she could've even saved the king and a lot of the kings change in attitude seemed to be in the fate of his own death so who knows what would've happened if he could've survived.
So though Gon was reckless he still got a lot done even if it hurt him and Killua though I can't say anything bad about him but I don't think he could've done anything to great while being manipulated and only after he escaped his own flaw that Killua gained the potential to do great things. So though what Gon did was still questionable I think it's still better than anything Killua could've done if he never escaped his own flaw and in consideration of going on a quest to get rid of the chimera ants having someone around with Gon's flaw to have your back seems much more reliable than having Killua if he kept his. A representation of what Killua would've been like if he kept his flaw would've been that guy that lost all his hair and a representation on what Killua and Gon are like without there own flaws would've been closer to morel.

I find it interesting that notMark didn't bring up that Gon is technically the one who introduced nen into the chimera ants. while other hunters had used it and the ants knew strong humans had unusual powers they only kind of saw the 'random' effects. It is Gon hitting said revenging/random Chimera ant (bunny) and him surviving without being crippled that brought nen as a usable power into the chimera ants, spread through punching since it was the only way they knew. Not saying they would not have gotten it eventually, they were eating humans, but Gon accidentally supplied a transmutable method instead of luck feeding or birth. instead of say four nen ants it's an army.
I think that this may be why Killua's problems are talked about more in the arc. showing fear and hesitation from 'uncertainty' is much harder to show, especially in a still medium. Both the problem, effects and cure are internal so dialog is really the only method of portrayal. but , Gon acts out phisically and the results are physically sent out into the world. And like two sides of the same coin for the characters Killua's problems and results are easy to see for characters but hard for the audience; Gon's problems and results are hard to see for the characters (due to distance) but we the audience get to see a lot of it.

Everyone prepare yourself for one of the best arcs in anime and manga history. I didn’t believe it myself at first but when I finally read it I was blown away. I know it sounds generic but it just is that good

3:06 The Author of Berserk, Kentaro Miura, that recently passed away also wrote really sad things in the publication of his manga such as:
in 1993 Miura writes: I lost 5 kilos doing nothing, I wonder why, I had a fever of 40 degrees, thinking about it I only had 2 days off this year, in the last 2 months I slept on average less than 4 hours a night.
    In 1995 he wrote:
I had a day off after a month and a half I went out and had heat stroke
    in 2004 he wrote:
my days off are half a day roughly every two months, i haven't had 2 days off in a row in 4 years, i'm getting tired of this.
    In 2005 he wrote:
i collapsed again from too much work, it's the same every year, i'm working on christmas and new year, if i don't see people for a long time my mouth doesn't work properly.
In 2011 he writes: I have not been able to see the cherry blossom live even once this year.
these are all his comments written during the writing of Berserk
He died due to aortic dissection which is caused by too much stress, in Japan there's a really big problem for overworking, and it is the only country in the world that has a word to describe death from too much work.
This is something that needs to change and that affects almost all mangaka and workers in general in japan
