Unfortunately, due to a copyright claim, I had to cut out about a minute and a half from this video, which is why you'll notice an abrupt cut at around 5:16. There wasn't any real harm done though - all that was said in that little bit was me skimming over the characters of Chrollo and Hisoka, saying that I don't want to say much about them because I'll discuss them in future individual videos, and then taking about 5 seconds to introduce Kalluto. Not much is missed in that cut at all, so hopefully it's relatively painless now that I've explained why.

Togashi said Chrollo is his favorite character because the spiders CHOOSE him as the leader, not Chrollo declaring himself as the leader. It's completely off the troupe having so much respect for Chrollo. Then he started talking about how something is wrong with with peoples' personality when they declare themselves the leader (in real life situations). It was a really interesting interview. Goes to show how much thought he puts into every aspect of this anime/manga.

Feitan is slower than killua now,plus He get hit by one blow by the chimera ant,I mean killua wouldnt get hit not even once,Pain packer is effective the more damage u take,thats the Pros,but Cons is he might die before using it,Hes also easily angered considering pain packer is activated by his rage
Oddly enough his Nen power most likely was derived from him suffering torture since a very young age similar to how Killua's lightning is related to his years of shock torture training as a kid.

Godspeed only makes it that his speed is at his max at all times and whirlwind allows his reflexes to act by themselves so killua is just at max speed all the time till it runs out and we haven’t even seen feitain’s full speed yet cause all the troupe members said he was still rusty and he didn’t really get hit, he got caught off guard from the ko doing no damage and his arm broke because he was parrying strong attacks so it’s not like he was genuinely tagged or anything

If it's for petty crimes of morality or law, take cheating, scamming, stealing, using drugs, drug dealing then no most people would say you shouldn't kill people that are involved in those things. But as far as rapists, pedophiles, serial killers, etc. Most people would turn a blind eye to those people if they received capital punishment.

Kurapika is a good person who I believe did a morally bad thing.
I'd like to believe murder is never the right answer. At a stretch, death is a viable answer only if it's for unbiased justice. (Even then, I believe that should be a last resort.) Kurapika murdered for vengeance however; and that never ends well.

Those are both terrific as well but I think it surpasses both of them to be honest. Meruem and Komugi's final moments is the only scene that gives me the same level of awe as the Requiem.

Phinks is my favourite; when he doubts of pakunoda's loyalty in her last moments, when she is about to shoot the information regarding chrollo to the troupe, his expression changes from the angry gaze we have come to expect from him into an emphatic one. I absolutely loved that moment.

Damn, the bit about Shalnark was perfect. I never really noticed how quickly he moved on and focused on Greed Island. He's not a character I've ever given much thought to until now. Very interesting. RIP Shalnark. I loved how you analyzed each character as an individual but also how that affects the overall image of the Phantom Troupe.
Feitan is one of my favorite characters in the troupe aesthetically speaking. The book he's reading while torturing Owl is from Trevor Brown (you can see that in the manga). Trevor Brown's art is twisted and definitely NSFW but I recommend you check it out. It emphasizes just how twisted Feitan is to enjoy such art so casually. Also, have you read the theory that Feitan is related to the Zoldyck's? Specifically Kikyo, Killua's mother. I'll try to find the link if you haven't.
Thanks again pal. Yeah, that isn't what I initially thought about Shalnark either but in paying close attention to his demeanor and behaviour, it becomes clear. Super interesting character to me.
I've seen Trevor Brown's art as well - really bizarre, graphic and dark but oddly quirky in a way as well, at least to me. Fits Feitan perfectly. I've heard about that theory but not really looked into the explanation or justification behind it, so I definitely wouldn't mind reading the link to the theory if you have it on hand!
The same thing happens to me when researching! I go into it with one idea and end up learning so much myself.
I agree the Trevor Brown stuff is actually pretty interesting, if a little too graphic for me at times.

Undoubtedly The Phantom Troupe is the beauty of HxH. Great job as usual. Analysis and Comparison of Chrollo and hisoka would be a very good topic for the coming videos.
The friendship of gon and killua their ups and downs through different arcs would be interesting to talk about.

Unpopular opinion: York New Arc is the best arc in the Hunter X Hunter anime, and the Chimera ant arc couldnt get out of its own way.

Melleberg Awesome Sauce just now seeing this comment. I meant while it started off strong, it slowed down way too much and over explained each situation. For example When Killua and Shoot (I get their names mixed up) where fighting the buff royal guard ant, the narrator explained each movement and aspect of the fight to the point I no longer felt like I was watching an anime but a documentary. I felt the York New arc had a perfect combination of development, explanation, and action.

@@byronjones4635 The narrator was an important part for the psychological roller coaster we got out of Chimera Ant Arc. I feel like he explained everything in the most subtle of ways and in as few words as he can. You see the Action all happened within a few minutes and the psychological development of Meruem and the Royal guards was densely packaged and intricate. It was such a treat. The thematic importance of the arc was greatly enhanced by The narrator. Infact it led up to the most satisfying and heart breaking end. The narrator was a must in my opinion.
Nobunaga is my favorite troupe character hands down and it's because of how much heart he has even for people that others in their own moral high ground would deem unworthy of said heart. This story needs to continue.
I think he's a great character as well. His heart adds such a great element to the Troupe and the arc.

I remember feeling similarly about the Phantom Troupe as I did about Meruem later in the series- namely, becoming increasingly fascinated in and sympathetic toward their characters while never ceasing to root for their deaths. This is more bizarre the more I think about it. How is it that a character can be written such that a viewer can enjoy every second of their screen-time while still feeling enormous catharsis from watching their brutal death?
Furthermore, this isn't universal to the well-written villains in the series. I definitely wouldn't want Hisoka to die... nor did I find Illumi likable in the slightest. Just the Phantom Troupe and Meruem have both characteristics. My only guess is this occurs when a character who would otherwise be extremely likable possesses motives that conflict so strongly with an even more likable character (usually a protagonist) that their removal from existence is still acknowledged as necessary and relieving.
It's incredibly weird, isn't it? I think it all comes down to making them either relatable or likeable (for lack of a better word). Or both. I mean, I obviously haven't experienced some of the things Meruem and the Troupe go through but I can definitely empathize due to how human they are, and that definitely helps. Since it's very difficult to make villainous characters legitimately relatable or sympathetic, it's not something you see often. Togashi is very good at it though. You're right - with some of the villains in this series, it isn't so much "Who do you hate more?" as much as "Who do you like the least?"
It still blows my mind that we seamlessly transition into an arc that has entirely new villains almost as protagonists. They were certainly the focus of the arc. Not only was it seamless, but it was one of the best arcs of the series. So weird and amazing.
Aleczandxr While I've got your attention, I just want to say that your videos on this series are some of the best on youtube. Since I'm very new to the world of anime (HXH being literally the first one I've watched after One Punch Man) analysis videos like this are wonderful windows into what the medium is capable of. From what I've seen, your content is comparable to that of much larger channels like Mother's Basement or Eyepatch Wolf (the videos analyzing Meruem were, in particular, fucking mindblowing). Please keep this up.
Andrew Cunningham Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Starting out on CZcams is difficult but comments like this really make it easy to persevere, along with just enjoying the process. There are plenty of other anime that at least approach HxH's level of art, so I'd definitely recommend checking the medium out. I started watching about two years ago and it literally changed my life.
Oh, and by the way, I didn't do that Meruem-Gon video. That was actually TalesOfNerdia, who has some very good stuff out as well, as I'm sure you know.

For me, the Phantom Troupe doesn't excel at each members' individuality. Sure , they are interesting, but alone each of them are relatively dull to a lot of other anime antagonists. What interesting about the Phantom Troupe is their comradery and their actions together as a family
They aren't/ don't act as a family. They are legit a distinct group in every way shape and form.
If they expand on each character like backstory etc. They’ll be interesting
Nobunaga, Machi, Feitan, Franklin and Phinx are all somewhat useful and interesting. Kortopi and Bonolenov are pretty worthless as characters and members. Sharlnark and Pakunota were rather annoying as is Shizuku. Chrollo is by far the coolest and most interesting member of the Troupe.

Coming from the bottom of the bottom where you have nothing, kindness is rare and the cruel world views you as worthless and would care less if you live or die would create an idealistic prospective of them vs us with no grey area for innocent people.

Dear Lord. This is literally (along with the Meruem/Berserk analyses) one of the best videos I have ever seen, in my life. You've captured what is so great about this arc and these characters SO WELL. I cannot stress it enough. Your videos are literal art - the editing, the music. I'm pretty sure you're my favorite CZcamsr bar none at this point. Just know that no matter what you do videos of, you'll always have a huge fan in me. (And I'm sure many others). Pakunoda is definitely my favourite PT character, though I really like Machi, Feitan, Nobunaga and Chrollo too. The part where Senritsu drew a parallel between her motives and Kurapika's, concluding that they are more similar than different was one of the top moments of the show for me, and I cried when she died :'(

Killua's mother always wanted a girl but every child she had was biologically male. She raised Kalluto as a girl, dressing him in girls clothing and referring to him as '-chan'(Often associated with girls and young children). Funnily enough, Alluka seems to act feminine of their own accord.
(I don't plan on jumping down the rabbit hole to discuss the moral implications of either of these things, I just thought I'd let you know.)
I suppose it is funny because it would have made the most sense to make Alluka the girl-boy instead of Kalluto

Once again another fantastic analysis that I couldn't agree with more. I especially agree with your opening statements, particularly how despite liking hxh from the beginning the york city arc being what made you really adore the show, which was exactly my experience. One of my favorite scenes in cinematic history that reached emotional heights that would not be seen again till the chimera ant arc (and I utterly adore all of hxh include the arcs and scenes between those york new and chimera do I don't say this lightly by any means) was the eulogy for Uvogin. Not only is it the crescendo of an areadly AMAZING episode, not only is it a masterstroke in animation and sound matching together perfectly (and my GODS those ending credits!) In a way that even someone with no context at all would think it's amazing, but with context (especially when rewatching the series) the emotions this scene exudes and inspires is so great that I feel the words "masterful", "masterpiece", exemplary", "epic" don't even do it close to justice. I'm not sure you can capture it in words. It's one of those few scenes in all the media that I've consumed that gives me the same strong feelings everytime without fail.If I ever was so blissed by the gods to meet the staff who worked on this scene, I would slam my head into the ground like inasa yoarashi from boku no hero academia in respect and I'm not even joking (I don't think I'd live if I saw ToGODshi in the flesh as I'd either burn away from witnessing a god walking on earth or I'd have a massive heart attack XD)

Thanks as always my man. I couldn't agree more about the requiem - I touched on it in the video but no words can do it justice. It's up there with Meruem and Komugi's final game as a transcendental scene, just beyond words. Beyond art, for me. It was absolutely spectacular. And Phinks is a true badass. ;)

M3rtyville no way I watched yuyu last summer and it was a 7/10, the ending was so rushed and it had some dull arcs. Hunter is a 8/10 for me and I wouldn’t even say I’m that I’m big of a fan
The part about Bonolenov just makes the fact that Killua, Gon, and Kurapika would all be part of, and would enjoy being part of the Phantom Troupe if the circumstances were different, even more true.

An interesting thing to note is how benolenov is a foil character to Kurapika. They both lost their entire tribe and if the Phantom troupe weren't the ones to kill Kurapika's brethren the group would have been a perfect place for him to find purpose
This encapsulates exactly why I loved the Yorknew Arc so much, and why the Phantom Troupe are a brilliant bunch of characters.
This arc was absolutely my favorite. :) I hated the Troupe at first, then was rooting for them close to the end of the series.
It's such a fantastic arc. Chimera Ant was most complex but this one was the most enjoyable to watch for me. It flows like water.
My favorite part of the Ant arc was when we got a snapshot of what the Troupe was doing.

What strikes me most about the Phantom Troupe are the subtle details that show that they’re human (sometimes pretty good ones at that). And I don’t mean that in the cliche sense. I mean like from a different perspective, they could be very viable protagonists of their own story. My favorite example is when Kurapika asks Uvogin if he remembers the people he killed. The answer he gives is surprisingly pragmatic and nuanced. He responds with “sort of, I remember the ones that made an impression”. It’s a perfectly sane response and shows that Uvogin is a lot more than the muscular brute archetype that defines him. It’s a completely opposite approach to the villains in a shonen like BNHA, where the bad guys are in my opinion often just Walking-Themes being hammered in your face with not much substance beyond that. Hunter x Hunter makes it clear that the bad guys are indeed PEOPLE with their own thoughts and aspirations. They’re not saints mind you, but in the world of Hunter x Hunter, who is? In-short, I think the biggest difference is that the villains in BNHA seem to be evil for evil’s sake and going out of their way to be bad guys. Whereas the Phantom Troupe are clearly just people with their own goals and dreams not that much different than the protagonists they oppose, that just happen to be branded as villains in their world. Which i personally find as a more interesting approach but who knows.
Also in terms of their designs the Phantom Troupe could easily be the protagonists of a series. A fairly dark series but none of the outright scream `villain`.
Feitans nen ability is one of my favorite things about the anime.

Good level-headed analysis. Substance over form. Character development is one thing HxH is good at. And that requiem scene really gave me goosebumps. I remember I was overtaken by unexplainable feeling of sense of loss, grief and the same time retribution. Though their selfish actions can never justified in any reason there be. It can however be understood. Thanks for this.

Absolutely love them, and I feel bad because I do. When I started to read the Yorknew City Arc I was convinced I will never gonna like them because Kurapika was my favorite main character and what they did was unforgivable in my opinion. At the end, I ended up loving them even more than the main cast (One may forgive me) although when thinking about the Kurta massacre it still sends a shiver up my spine.
But what I found so incredible is that Togashi (and Madhouse) managed to make them so human and understandable without the usual anime flashbacks and emotional speeches. We don't know what their pasts where like other than probably pretty shitty. We don't need them to remember their sad childhood to feel their pain and impulsion. We get to know them a totally different way. Some examples:
1. Nobunaga crying about Uvogin and his eagerness for revenge - It caught me completely off guard and made Nobunaga the first troupe member I felt attached to.
2. The whole way Chrollo is executed as a leader, but also as a person. Everyone listens to him and inherits deep respect, but Chrollo is also just a person who listens to others (e.g. Machi), makes mistakes and can be upset.
3. The whole dispute of Phinks with the other members and the small moment where he turns his looks on Pakunoda while taking her bullet combined with the sad calmness afterwards.
All these moments didn't need any story of the past to make us empathetic. We didn't need to see Uvogin actually caring for Nobunaga, because his reaction to his death was enough to convince. We didn't need Chrollo to think out loud what his struggles as a leader are, because it is apparent that he has to fulfill different tasks that sometimes contradict each other. Instead of Phinks memory of Pakunoda and what he saw in her, we saw her memories and the way it settled him and changed his opinion.
Hunter x Hunter is full of these subtle characterizations and I'll gladly take side characters philosophy over auctioning, minor character deaths and Hisokas fanboying over Gon for that ;)
The Phantom Troupe is one of the most powerful organisations in the HxH world

This might be one of the few anime that makes you want the antagonists to take revenge on one of the main characters because he killed one of them. Togashi made something really beautiful, Uvo was one of the saddest parts of this series because it manages to humanize the Phantom Troupe in such a way that you want the main guy dead for what he did.
you chose the perfect tune for that background, this episode in particular was one of the best hxh had to offer, man the death of that hunter with the barret was just dead awful, still sends chills down my spine
The thing that makes the spider irredeemable for me is the same as it does for Gon, they are so human wen it comes to each other, crying over a dead comrade, yet they steal and kill without a single emotion, that is also what makes them different from the Zoldyck Family.
Yeah, I ultimately think that they're irredeemable as well, though I do find certain aspects of them sympathetic and endearing. It's an odd but fascinating dynamic.
Fernando Gonçalves it's really interesting for me because personally I don't think anyone is irredeemable but at the same time even myself who is strongly against a totality of justice and for redemption feel like they must die even though I love them all so much (Aw I just can't stick to one emotions or philosophy when I think and talk about hxh XD!)

The writer has stated a few times i recall that he specifically makes Gon pretty basic to make all the other characters seem more interesting by contrast. Which seems to work

Thank you so much ive wanted to see an analysis on the spiders for such a long time, i loved the fact you gave each member their own segment and definitely made me like them more. Whilst i was pondering over what exactly the spiders motives were, i over thought things, there wasn't some deep objective or cause to do with the killings or despicable acts.It was just a group of people who have found peace and tranquillity in a home outside the moral expectations of society ; they are just like any group of friends or family who look out for each other and they're all pretty damn proud of it. Some of my favourite members include machi ( design wise), pakunoda ( character development wise) and nobunaga ( just an overall great guy and i liked his advances to get gon and killua to join) again love ur analysis and i hope to see more hxh content from you in the future

After watching My Hero and now-rewatching HxH, shit, I now realize just how superior Togashi's portrayal of antagonists is, and how the story/how the characters progress (physically) is weaved steadily and rationally.
Your description of Uvogin reminded me of Zabuza from Naruto, he was the villain that taught Naruto that the evil people he will face will all be human on the inside.

Shalnark, just as you said in video. I liked him from very first scene he was really positive yet I knew he was killer, really good character development for him.
And Chrollo calm smart and strong. Great character. He cares for his friends and yet as chef doesnt go trying to be any higher than them except giving them orders. He didnt hesitate when he was going to die and believed that if he is going to die "it would be totally okay cause my friends wont die too"

As I say to all togashi Fans or just people enjoy his work. I highly recommend Yu Yu hakusho. Chrollo shares and uncanny likeness to Shinobu Sensui. I always find myself being pulled into togashi's villians. The biblical imagery and references in both characters is outstanding yet both characters can't be more different. Why do you make me love your villains, so damn much.

Ya the spirit detective arc is very uninteresting and is filled with your typical shonen stuff. I promise you it picks up and takes off later and your patience will be rewarded. Togashi has even regarded the english dub to his preferred way of watching the show since they captured the characters better.
