It comes down to one simple question. Are you a Red or a Blue?!
Johnny English Blue of course. Everton will get that tenth league title one day. It would put us in double figures at last. I remember Gary Stevens running down the right and scoring a deflected goal from twenty, twenty five yards against Liverpool at Anfield in September 1987 in the Football League (Littlewoods) Cup in a 1-0 win. I remember the 2-1 win in the first ever league derby in the Premier League era at Goodison Park when Peter Beardsley scored the winning goal. I honestly believe that the most intense derby match played between Everton and Liverpool was the 2-2 draw in the First Division at Goodison Park on Saturday September 22nd 1962. It was the first Derby match for seven years and the first league derby for eleven years. 72,000 73,000 packed into Goodison and there was controversy. In the first minute Everton scored a legitimate goal that was chalked off for an dubious foul on Liverpool goalkeeper Tommy Lawrence. Twenty minutes later Everton was again denied a goal for a marginal offside decision. But in the 29th minute we were awarded a penalty for a handball in the area. Liverpool players protested but the decision stood and Roy Vernon, Inside-Left, scored from the spot. In the 35th minute Liverpool equalised- a cross from Outside-Left Alan A’Court went to Outside-Right Ian Callaghan who crossed it into the Centre-Forward Kevin Lewis who was replacing an injured Ian St. John. The score at halftime was Everton 1-1 Liverpool. In the second half we scored a goal that according to Liverpool’s Left-Back Ronnie Moran never crossed the goal-line- former Liverpool player converted Everton player Johnny Morrissey scored from ten yards. Again Liverpool protest but the goal stood and it seemed the game was heading for a deserved Everton 2-1 victory until...
The damned Roger Hunt popped up last minute to score an underserved second equaliser. The final score Everton 2-2 Liverpool.
Everton was far superior in that match but that is what often happens on derby games- one side cancelling out the other. We should have won 3-2 though.
