    They come in all sizes, shapes and colors, and they’re human’s best friends. Over centuries, various dog breeds across the globe have been trained by humans to play important roles, from hunter to guardian, from herder to companion.For some of these breeds, size has been of significant importance, whether that was to hunt bigger game or guard a home with more authority, or even just to have the mass to survive in freezing climates. But of all the dog breeds in the world, who are the biggest? Let’s find out.
    Welcome to another episode of 4 Ever Green. Today, we’re counting down the Top 10 Biggest Dogs in the World. If you thought Great Dane’s were the tallest dogs, then be sure to stick around for number 1, because this lesser known breed is even taller!

    One day I walked along a beach in Achill and saw a man walking two of the biggest Alsatians I'd ever seen either side of his small horse. I was wary of these big Alsatians until I realised (with a bit of shock) as I was walking by that the horse in the middle of them was an Irish Wolfhound.

    These dogs all look wonderfui in their own way. My older sister and family had a black lab. Even though he wasn't near as big as these dogs, he was quite big enough. His name was SARGE. He looked intimidating, but was a big baby ! He loved people, He lived to be 14, had heartworms when he died, he was taken to the vet on a regular basis still got them. He's been gone many years, but we still miss him. Miss you, Sarge !

      Awwe ! My older brother had one for a very short time. It was a beautiful dog, and maybe would have been a nice dog if you spent time with it. I don't know what was wrong with it, it jumped around like a kangaroo. They had to get rid of it because it attacked a pup that came near when it was eating, and they didn't want their young kids to be hurt. I tried working with it some when I could, I'd talk to him and get him to stand kinda still before i gave him his food, and of course give him praise.

      Hi Deborah..I sure feel your pain. We had 4 English bulldogs. The first two died at 5 yrs old. The second two, we’ll, we still have our girl, Vivienne. She’s 8. We lost her gorgeous highly intelligent & lovable brother, Findlay (Finn), at 8 yrs old when we moved from PA to CA. I still cry everyday for him. This breed barely makes it to 9 or 10 yrs old. We won’t get anymore pets. We can’t take the pain when we lose them😢

    I have always owned Huskys, but when my Husky died (16 years old) I adopted a half German Shepard half husky mix that is absolutely massive. It looks very much like a Sibe, but significantly better behaved, and seems to shed a heck of alot less (and shorter coat to boot) absolutely wonderful family member. I think of him as a huge dog, but in reality, he is probably 30 inches or so and 80 pounds..... that was until tricker-treating one year i found out our neighbor had an Irish wolf hound. OMG that dog is huge, and so very wonderful. Great GREAT owners and an absolutely wonderful dog. The personality on that dog is just the cherry on top. I really love that dog, enough so i started researching them. They have such a short life span, i just couldn't own one. I want to say it was like 5-7 years or something similar to that. So much personality, so darn lovable....it must be absolutely crushing for Irish Wolf hound owners that don't live very long.

    What I find cool is how genetically diverse dogs are, like. they bred bear-hunting dogs to look like bears (massive, heavy, fluffy) and deer-hunting dogs to look like deer (slender, leggy, fine-boned) and were able to do it successfully

      @joelsdogbehavior Před rokem +2

      What's really crazy is when you get into the interplay of human driven breeding, working purpose, and coincidental benefits from "natural" pressures. New Finland are one of the best examples. The video doesn't mention it, but they have among the softest pallets, perfect for lifeguard retrieval, they can fully grab a limb withing doing any damage. Yet you can't understand this adaptation as just breeding for lifeguards because ultimately people would tolerate scratches for having their life saved and breeding would push for size, strength, and swimming capacity. You have to account for their fishing role and the harms condtant rope pulling would do to harder pallets pushing the selection factors toward dogs with less mouth sours from a softer pallet. Then it makes perfect sense.
      Breeds become this meshed history of purpose which correlates with their human owners relationship to their environment. You can even see the difference modernly as you drive through rough neighbors in my city its 3/4 pitbull mix, hit the suburbs and its 4/5 doodles. They are walking history books.

      Not every dog is everything. You may find outliers but you should never base the rule on the outlier. To disregard inherent predisposition is doing a disservice to yourself as an owner and to the dog. You could end up forcing a round peg into a square hole and while you may be able to make it fit that doesn't mean it's comfortable.

    I’d love to have a Great Dane, but I can’t deal with putting myself through loosing my beloved friend every 5-6 years. It’s a shame that science hasn’t figured out why these dogs age so darn fast. If that code could be broken, I’d love to own one. It’s sad enough having a dog die that’s over 15 years old. I recently had my Italian Greyhound pass away. He was 15 years, 3 months old. And my best friend.

      Check into european great danes I own one hes only 9 months old but weighs 120lbs the euros have a bigger build and more muscle mass and really resemble a mastiff more so than american Danes more muscle means better support for those long and huge extremities ive read there life span is a bit longer.....my plan is just a very good diet and a good exercise routine (enough to keep his cardio good and maintain his muscular structure for his older age days) im no vet at all and honestly am just doing what I think is best my vet has said hes doing great and not to far ahead of the normal statistics for his breed(not over doing it) but is exceeding a bit the vet said thats what he thinks he would want to see if it were his dog said he would be well developed and ready for his later years when they come.....again im no pro nor do I claim this is gonna give me 15 years with him im only a passionate dog lover and have always dreamed of having a dane as my companion (kinda a service dog imma combat vet) and although I may deal with a loss sooner than others I've never had a dog show me the compassion and dedication he has accept for my 14ur old German Shepard that i had to put down a few months ago so I really think its worth the risk I got this big guy to continue the role me and my wife's best friend in life (our Shepard) was to us and in the time we have had him hes doing a wonderful job.....the only downside I see some people my have is they do not know what personal space is but we are fine with that this giant will literally back up to you while you are sitting on the couch and he will sit right in your lap or walk onto the couch and lay right across you lol........sorry for the long drawn out post but if you want one dont be afraid of the short life span I pro.ise they will love you enough to cram a unlimited amount of memories into your brain leaving you very happy and grateful you chose to get one even if you have fewer years with them as to another dog that sports a long lifespan......thanks for reading

      Jeffrey, I certainly agree that as far as science and technology has come it seems they could break or fix that code. The reason I replied to your comment is because my wife and I had a beautiful Italian Greyhound, his name was "The Dude", he lived right at 15 years and went everywhere with us. Very smart breed, he was a charcoal grey in color. My condolences to the loss of your friend, trust me, I know how much it hurts to lose a dog...man's best friend! We now have a beautiful registered Dougue De Bordeaux, her name is Ruthie and she is almost 9 months old. Like the Great Dane, the Bordeaux has a shorter life span. I believe with all my heart, that with the right diet, alot of exercise and regular Vet visits she will out live the estimated life span. We went from a miniature breed to one of the largest breeds. Ruthie is kind, gentle, obedient and a very fast learner, she has not nary a mean bone in her body. Best of luck to you and the next breed you choose.

She was house sitting for him when he was away filming the movie MEET JOE BLACK in Rhode Island and took us up to the house one day, just to hang on on the property by the pool. Anyway,as we got out of the car, FIVE Irish Wolf Hounds came running towards us. It was terrifying-they were massive dogs. Our friend instructed us how to behave around them and once they established we were not intruders, they were fine. Friendly even. But man, talk about scary-imagine having five of those beasts running up to you and snarling/barking/growling.

    I had a dog in the 70s got him from the pound, and I named him Hugo, he was 1/2 St. Bernard, and 1/2 Samoan, he was solid white and he looked like a large Samoan dog. He weighed 180 pounds! And he was so loving and so was Rust. That was his brother who was full Irish setter, that was trained into dog shows, but why do people wanted to get rid of him, was because they were off to vacation and somebody broke into their house, and the Irish setter rust head turn on those burglars and tore them up. I’ve never seen this part of rust hurting anybody somebody poisoned him because he’d like to pick the trash in our trailer park. Also, with Hugo, he like to chase 18 wheelers and we lived right behind Route 66, and he got hit by a 18 wheeler, they were both such good dogs and we lost him real close together, which was a shame.

    While discussing large breed dogs, in WWII, the Bouvier De Flanders was one of the largest and most fierce dogs. So much so that Hitler put a bounty on them and the breed was nearly lost. Also, in the large dog breeds, there are the Italian Maremma’s. I personally have two of them. The largest is 165.35 pounds or 75kg and stands at 39 inches at the shoulder, the smaller one is 149.91 pounds or 68kg. They are wonderful companions, but need to be socialized when very young or the can be one of the most fierce guard dogs in the world. They were originally bred to kill wolves that attacked the sheep herds. Today, they are still used to protect sheep, cattle and various other animals, even Chicken farms. The most famous of the breed, saved the Fairy Penguins off the coast of Melbourne Australia from extinction by predation from foxes. Ever see the movie “oddball”? That is a Maremma. Thank you for producing the video, but I think you could be more diverse than just Mastiffs and Great Danes.

I used to watch the Westminster Dog Show annually but have missed out on the last number of years; hence there were a couple of names that I wasn’t familiar with. I expected the Great Dane and the Irish Wolfhound to make the list. I was walking in NYC and came face to face with an Irish Wolfhound being led by his owner. He got up on his hind legs and put his paws on my shoulders, not really jumping on me but I was a bit startled. The owner said, “Sorry but don’t worry; he just wants to be your friend.” I also noticed that you featured video clips of some very beautiful Harlequin Great Danes. Thanks for sharing!
