Since he's such a scared and anxiety-ridden dog, I think he did spectacularly well during this groom. *Big* applause to Dwayne!
I actually started crying when he wouldn't accept the treat. God someone really messed him up 😢
I agree. He is beautiful ❤
And a standing ovation for Vanessa!
@@justhearmeout3959tbf a lot of dogs won't take treats from unfamiliar ppl when they're uncomfortable
@@justhearmeout3959 lots of dogs don't take treats at places like the vet or groomers because it's a highly stressful environment even for confident and socialized dogs. not to downplay his anxiety, of course. putting this here so other groomers and owners don't worry too much if some clients don't accept a peace offering
Seeing him excited with his owners is so cute! Definitely important to be cautious, but this is just a reminder that even the biggest dogs can be sweet little potatoes
props to the owners they seem like very nice responsible people
'Sweet potatoes' can also kill (accidentally) if they are sufficiently big. Jeez... dog owners are more scary than their dogs
This ‘sweet little potato’ has a history of biting people. Did you not hear that bit?
@@illegalsmirf ngl if a sweet lil potatoe (lil meaning it could maul me easily) killed me, I think I'd be okay because it's a handsome little guy (again, little meaning it could bark so loud it shatters my bones)
@@KaiserSoze357even a large, strong man wouldn’t be able to control a dog that big. Virtually no one can. To your point, at least someone stronger than those two ladies could actually be something more than a tiny speed bump.
How he's running back to you after he greeted his owners is so adorable!
It's like he was saying, "Mom, I made a friend today." 🐾
Or, please help me. I am a victim of abuse. Get me away from these people.. 😰
Just kidding hehe. Probably abused before they adopted him !

Owners knowing their dogs is so important. Well done Dwayne!
Didn't want treats, but did dare to come and say goodbye to you after greeting his owners. I was amazed! That right there is a huge step. Good job, the three of you!
Just needed a little support from mama
He didn't eat treats because his muzzle was to small to allow it.
He couldve managed if he truly wanted the treats. Mastiffs are incredibly food motivated and he had room to open his mouth to fit in the jerky treat or at least lick them. The fact that he didnt even TRY to eat the treats shows how wary and nervous he was.@@krimhildpl6688
@krimhildpl6688 No, the Mr Dwayne was very stressed and didn't feel like eating you can see in the video Vanessa feeding him but he refuses
The way he came back to you after greeting his owners is like him saying thank you! ❤ He's such a sweet boy
Oh My Gawsh! That was sweet. 😍😍😍😍
He probably felt so good after that groom. All that dirt and shedded hair removed probably made him feel like a new dog.
This really goes to show that even for animals, it’s important to be empathetic and recognize their boundaries. Especially with rescues who often carry a lot of trauma with them, having a principle like “when he takes the muzzle off, the groom is over” is really important for the well-being of both the dog and the groomer. You could say the same for people a lot of the time.
His eyes say that he's really a sweet-hearted teddy bear once he trusts you ❤
My boy Apollo literally looks exactly like Dwayne. You're 100% correct. Once you baby talk him, he turns to butter and he's your best friend.
go hug him alone
You are delusional.
@@fuzzd0rk 💯😄😄
My cousin had two mastifs, both rescues. Sibre was an English mastiff and weighed 210lbs and thought she was a lapdog! Charlie was a Neapolitan and was ‘smaller’ at 182lbs. Unfortunately Charlie was rescued from a illegal fighting ring and was so scared and aggressive he couldn’t be around anyone safely, only my cousin and his wife and the lovely Sibre. Sadly he died 18 months after they got him of cancer but he knew love and safety for at least some of his short life.
Poor Charlie.
I'm sure he appreciated every moment of the good life, bless his spirit.
At least poor Charlie experienced love from humans before he passed. Dog fighting is a huge problem in this state and the spectators are just as guilty as anyone torturing animals for this odious past time. All of them should be in jail.
At least he got to experience a nice home and didn’t have to be in that horrible dog fighting situation anymore
That poor, sweet pup. So glad he was rescued so he could know love. People who fight dogs and/or abuse them are absolutely evil.
He was so scared but he wasn’t aggressive at all! His humans are doing a great job socializing him, and I’m always impressed by how thoughtful and considerate you are around dogs with triggers.
I agree, there is a big difference to acting out and biting out of fear to out of aggression... He did look like more fear based from his past... I hope he can work threw his past and learn to be safe and happy...
4:13 That tongue-out, relaxed-lazy-ears expression is such a joy to see 🥰 Good boy Dwayne!
He did good for a dog with a history and knows how powerful he is... What a noble animal.
i love that Vanessa has started to show the owners reactions. this guy was such a sweetheart!!
She does on occasion when people are comfortable with being on camera.
He was such a serious dog while getting groomed and then seeing his owners he immediately jumps into Happy mode😊
You did a terrific job with him and he was pretty good for a groom. So good job Dwayne😊❤
Seriously, his eyes spoke volumes of his sadness and fear, but once the muzzle was off and he got to run around with Mom around, he shed it in a hot minute. I'm glad they had a good first start though with no damage done to anyone. Hopefully some of the confidence from today will rub off, and they'll get even further with the next one!
@@Tirani2 At the end he looked so young and happy pup... OMG he became a bulldozer with a deadly tail, LOL love seeing dogs like that..... I hope his golden years with his forever home will help him feel more safer and get to live a happy life.
To the wonderful people who rescued him, well done. Whatever caused him to become frightened and broken, karma started serving justice the day you showed up in his life, he’s safe and loved and cannot be harmed further. To Girl with the Dogs, thank you for providing these educational videos and I applaud you for respecting Dwayne’s boundaries. I look forward to his progress.
Poor baby. I'm glad that he's now surrounded by people who love him.
I feel like Vanessa's calm and confident demeanor automatically calms down any dog she grooms. Apart from obviously being very professional, that exact attitude is what helps anxiety-ridden dogs get through grooms with less distress. I don't think any groomer would be this serene in the face of a dog this huge, not to mention with a bite history
I think her being female helps, too. She’s little and non threatening. He would’ve been more concerned about a man.
@@hothotheat3000 I think it might help but it's her vibes that makes the biggest difference. small but not weak
@hothotheat3000 that can definitely plan a role in a lot of dogs, but don't forget about her cameraman who also helps with the grooming at times. I imagine both work hard to create a calm and level-headed environment for all dogs who come in
@@kk_612 I'm reminded of another video with a big boi. He was very clear that the cameraman was NOT to come any closer to the 'child' (Vanessa) who was grooming him 😂
@lambentlamprey interesting, if u remember the name of the video, let me know
Dwayne was a pleasure and so were his lovely people! Such a big strong dog, so scared of everything. I hope that baby can get some more chances to face his fears 💪
not to mention more chances to bite and potentially kill
@@illegalsmirfyou ‘people’ have brainrot.
He looks like Hannibal Pupper in that mask😁
I've taken in a lot of different mastiffs and mastiff crosses over the years, and helped rehab and resocialize most of them. A lot of them have pretty terrible histories, because people don't understand how stubborn they can be and feel comfortable punishing them like they were people. It's terrible.
But I've also seen how quickly a mastiff with a terrible abuse history can turn around in the right environment, and he definitely looked like he's in the right environment. I'm almost positive he'll keep coming out of his shell and relaxing more, with those folks by his side.
@@RevShifty that's the bright side i like to hear :) i was surprised he was even tolerant for the blow dry, im sure he'll be perfectly fine
I hope his bite history is just from his past, and he finds he can relax and enjoy his forever home... If he had to live on edge and always feel like he had to protect himself. I think that could be a big trigger for his biting in his past.. I hope in his golden years he can find peace and really get to enjoy life with his pack/family. :)
Love the owners " SO SHINYYYY" 😂❤ Thank you for being willing to put in so much effort for rescues and dogs like dwayne
I think it's commendable that you've gone this far into the groom, because the owner knew her dog's triggers.
Speaks volumes about how big this can be for an animal's wellbeing.
The owners obviously took the time to get to know their dogs triggers, that says a lot about them, what a beautiful dog, I loved watching this and learned a lot, thanks for sharing
Thank you for the background at 2:25 it’s so important to remember that most “problematic behaviors” in dogs were INTENTIONALLY BRED into them for human use! So glad Dwayne is safe with his loving forever family ❤
Poor cute chunky dog
why is it important to remember?
@@krollic remembering history is good in general
profound@@croc2112
@@krollic Passionate dog lovers sounding off. Yes it's true, How you raise your dog (just like how a raise a child) will determine their behaviour and temperament as they grow, But genetics also plays a part. You have to be careful with powerful dogs that were bred for a reason by humans, just because you raised your dog as a well trained family pet, Doesn't mean you take liberties and have full trust in them in any situation. It only takes something to trigger a bad reaction, And if you are not in control at the time then it's not going to be a good outcome. In my opinion, Some breeds should not be family pets cause they have a trigger... And it's been well documented! Nice family pet bla bla... Goes and flips and does some damage to someone or another dog or whatever.
Such an innocent, scared-of-his-shadow boy. Hopefully Dwayne will see that not all humans are bad and that many of us just want to love all the four-legged friends. He did amazing and looks amazing too!
For all those who rescue dogs…thank you! ❤️🐶
🐾 ❤ 🐾
My parents were given a Neo, and I remember researching it as I hadn’t heard of that breed before. The one line I remember from the book I read on them was “a mastiff can break your arm, and neo can decide if it wants to walk away WITH your arm”. A lovely breed that one must respect. I’m not surprised the owners were concerned about keeping the muzzle on. Thank you for the video, I hope to see more of this big guy down the road!!
That’s quite the tidbit of information! So important for owners to understand what a dog was bred for & especially for the large breeds that can cause serious damage to a human of any size.
Yeah. I think socialization is important for any dog, but especially these big ones. My parents dog was named “Tiny”, but I think he weighed in around 180 - 200 lbs
@@peterd314I absolutely love it when owners give their dogs names that go completely against the dog’s size / look, it always reminds me of Bruiser the chihuahua from Legally blonde 😁❤️
@@MsMusicalways By far my biggest beef with my sister-in-law is that when my brother's dachshund puppy joined the family, she used her veto power to make sure the little gal wasn't named Fezzik, lol.
@@SPierre-dm4wo That's family-breaking material right there!
The fact that he could’ve taken the muzzle off at any time shows how patient and sweet that BIG boy is.
I raised Neapolitan Mastiffs over 15 years ago. Really wonderful dogs. What a treat seeing you groom such a beast. You were fearless!
I grew up with a mastiff. I was around 3 years old when we got him, & he was about 1 year old. He became my companion, my guardian, and my napping companion (& sometimes pillow). He was boisterous with my brother but always very gentle with me. RIP dear friend ❤️
I don’t know why these grooms make me cry. I’m just so happy there’s people who understand scary dogs are usually just scared.
First thing we learn in vet tech school is if an animal is aggressive it’s because something you’re doing is triggering them, and it’s not personal, but you have the power to change your actions to hopefully settle them.
Exactly. We got our boy knowing he had some aggression issues. I wanted to work with him and have realized that he is absolutely terrified and shakes in a corner if he's not allowed to bark aggressively. It's fear based for him, which made me feel sad for what he's gone through.
This actually made me cry. Looking at that sweet, magnificent being so terrified. I can’t begin to imagine what he went through. It fills my heart knowing he did find love. From his humans, but also from his groomer.
It's heartbreaking to see how many dogs from muscular breeds with strong loyalty instincts get horribly abused by bad owners who take advantage of that loyalty to try & make them vicious, or dog-fighters, or intimidating! 😢 When you see their resulting fear aggression, one can only imagine the awful things they've been through to get like that...
However, it never ceases to blow my mind the difference that rehabilitators like Dwayne's new pet-parents can make? Patience, persistence, solid re-training & heaps of affection really can give these abused dogs the most amazing second chances at a loving home! I honour them & their work so much...
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166I really appreciate your answer. Focusing on the better life they get, instead of the abuse they suffer. They have a bright future full of love indeed.
You both stated your respective comments so well. I'm big on judging by the individual, not the breed, and y'all beautifully summed up why every dog deserves a chance and how vital it is that they're cared for and loved. Idk, you said it very well and i appreciated reading these comments a lot
You actually cryed#
It could be as simple as bad genetics and poor socialization as a puppy. Most dogs like this haven’t been abused they just had previous owners that didn’t know how to properly care for them which is still sad
I have a rescued mastiff. She hated men with any boots on. We worked slowly getting her used to boots. She still won't let anybody in but dad and that is good enough for us. They are such loving and safety feeling dogs. ❤
I smiled the whole time. Your sweet nature and pleasant voice were perfect for this big lovely dog. He may even have thought he was there to protect you from lions and tigers and bears. The way he romped to his people said, look ma, I was a good dog for the little lady.

You have such a calming demeanor with this big ol' boy. Not hesitant, just confidently going about the task with a calm voice. I'm sure it reassured him a little. With your personality and smooth, confident attitude, I'm sure he'll be eating treats before too long.
At 1:50 his face looks so relaxed, I think he really enjoyed the bath, great work Vanessa !!!!!
You're so awesome for taking on such a big dog with a bite history. I loved seeing how excited his people were to see him shiny and it's wonderful they gave such a giant a home! It's great the groom went off without any problems, the more successful grooms he has the more confident he will become. Congratulations everyone!!
He looked so sad… something really messed up his past but his future looks bright with loving new owners!
I admire how patient, understanding, and calm you are with these dogs. That goes a long ways towards reassuring them in what may be very scary situations for them for so many reasons. Always a pleasure to see you work. And Dwayne looked very handsome after his groom.
I can’t wait to see his next groom with you! He seems like such a sweet boy, and watching him build some confidence with your help would be awesome.
He was pretty good for his groom. It was heartwarming to see how happy he was to see his people come pick him up. You can tell that they treat him well, and that he adores them.
I so appreciate your way of approaching each dog differently. It seems your mannerism with each is fine tuned, putting them more at ease. Thank you for being such a compassionate human in these fur babies' lives.
Im so glad you showed his owners and how he transforma into such a sweetheart. God only knows what abuse he endured and so glad he found his family. Good Job Dwayne! ❤
Get your head out of your arse, dogs get this way due to a lack of training and socializing.
Surprisingly, Duane did great for a first professional groom. It's obvious he was adopted into a very loving home. I am thrilled both you and the owners have made the commitment to continue his grooms. Sky is the limit for Duane!
I love that the owner called him Baby, her baby ❤️🐾❤️
Not to make Dwayne feel body shamed, you can see in his joints that he is having some mobility issues & due to the torso girth, he could use to lose at least 10lbs. Don't forget doggo parents that an obese pet is not a representation of how much more you love your animal versus those who maintain a healthy, breed recommended weight ❤.
Well done Vanessa, he was clearly very distressed, and you kept him calm.
I love how he reacted when he saw his family!!! My rescue pup will not relax until my husband and I are in the house with her. Then she naps like she’s never slept before!! Vanessa, you’re fantastic with all of the different animals and personalities that come through your shop! 🩷🩷🩷
He looked so sad and scared but I was so glad to see him happy when he saw his mommy!😊
Helping him become aware that a groom will help him feel better and not be scary is wonderful. Thank you for taking time with him. He’s a good boy
I love how you took the time with him and gently got him outside his comfort zone but didn't push him too far. Definitely helping him deal with new situations and build that confidence- thank you for working with with these lovely dogs who need some extra TLC !
seeing how sweet he is with his owners tells me he will have an amazing personality when he comes out of his shell which exposure and successful experiences like this are going to get him closer and closer to
Saw Dwayne in his muzzle and got a real Hannibal Lecter vibe! Never occurred to me until later how frightened Dwayne might have been in the situation and how the muzzle helped and protected him as much as it did you and your camera man. Great job Vanessa, Dwayne looked amazing afterward even if you had to cut the session short. His owners and you are doing a great job socializing such a beautiful example of the Neapolitan Mastiff breed!
Being a mastiff owner...he did really good..big beautiful baby.❤
I love you! The way you take time and are so aware of the dog’s needs is amazing. I wish all groomers were like you. Please do give us an update the next time this sweet boy is groomed.
He has a look of quiet resignation but clearly didn’t trust the treats.❤❤❤
He loves his mom so much. I wish him luck on his socialization journey.
Such a good boy! I’m so proud of him for getting that far even though he’s been through a lot. You’re a brave champ Dwayne! 💙🥰
Dwayne is a BIG BABY! He needs lots of hugs and pets. He is in good hands, both groomer and owner. :) Thank you for sharing him with us.
We love dog parents who go above and beyond to help their babies and understand what they can work on! Just from you talking about them, I could tell how much they care for Dwayne!
I was gonna say just looking at him he doesn't look aggressive...
But he does look extremely concerned.... poor guy. I'm sure that whatever happened in his past is the reason for the outbursts of aggression, poor guy is just trying to keep himself safe.
He's absolutely adorable. I hope his new family are able to help him work through some of his problems
Family/Breed Genetic memory passes through the generations , Humans included ! Imagine that ... With Love 🙂
And that's exactly it, he's keeping himself safe. 💙🐾
A lot of times as a groomer, you're more at risk of being bitten by a nervous/anxious dog than almost anything else. Biting can be a fear response and depending on HOW worried the dog is can easily mean you get little to now warning before you actually get bit. I groom with my sister and it's the "nervous nitts" that we almost always take the most caution with because they can be the most unpredictable, and NONE of them WANT to bite but if they do it can honestly really mess the dog up long term. 😢 It's really awesome to see returning clients come in that get more and more comfortable over time and the ones that were able to move from having a muzzle for everything, to certain things, to being 100% muzzle free is so awesome ❤❤❤
He dont need to, those are huge dogs, even a playfull bite can be dangerous and if/when he feel in danger you are in danger.
Agreed.❤
Keep us posted on Dwayne! He looks like a sweetie and saw how much trust he gave you! He senses your good nature and I think he will be another of your success stories! Looking forward to a couple months for an update! Thank you for what you do for these fur babies!
I loved seeing how happy his family was at the end! They were definitely ecstatic and noticed how shiny his coat was. You also taught him that he could survive and be well-behaved through his groom. Great job! Can't wait to see him on the channel again. What a honey.
Finally a happy, loving and caring home for this gorgeous misunderstood breed in need of a firm loving hand and tons of socialization. Just like all large protective breeds. He looked so happy to see his family!❤

Oh he is such a love. I'm so glad they brought him to you.
Also, I love how you're cautious, but not skittish, and you respect all the pets' tolerances and preferences.
Aw he’s so nervous, he doesn’t want any treats.
Please keep adding the owners reaction to the result at the end of the video (if they are ok with it of course) is one of my favourite things of this kind of videos 😊
You were so good with him! I'm very hopeful you'll be able to help him. I can't wait to see him again. What a sweet boy. I hate the thought of anyone being abused. The worst are animals, babies and others who cannot advocate for themselves. It's pure evil to hurt others. I wish the best for this big boy.
Big guy looks so done with life, I hope he heals from what ever he had to deal with in his past
Duane was such a good boy. A dog this big could still cause quite a lot of damage even with a muzzle (especially when you are half his size).

This guy did a great job during his groom! He was clearly very scared and uncomfortable but he did a great job controlling his emotions! Fantastic job by the owner and groomer as well, a little communication and honesty can go a long way with reactive dogs. Everyone who handles this guy should be aware of his triggers and you guys did a great job managing them.

Thank you for what you do and for explaining everything, especially that the groom was a step-in socializing. He was so shut down and afraid in the shower, but so happy at the end. It can be so difficult to socialize a large rescue dog since finding people to help is a big challenge. Well done!

She has the freedom to do that because of her channel. A typical groomer doesn’t have the luxuries Vanessa has.

Mastiffs are so expressive. Their emotions are always written all over their face. I had two of them and always knew what they wanted just by the look they gave me.
Goodness me...Mastiff with a bite history sounds like a criminal record. Duane needs to rehabilitate his reputation! Oh my gosh, him running to his owners at the end is so perfect. He's so shiny now!
Great job Vanessa!
Dwayne is precious, look at those expressive eyes❤
Thank you being kind and patient to these animals- you are a gem 😊
I'm not a religious person but bless you for all that you do for all these dogs that just need a little more understanding and patience. People rarely take into consideration what an animal experiences while they are trying to understand human communication. So thank you so very much.
