I discovered sixteen years ago that poodles were a good choice for me personally. Having 5 poodles and poodle mixes at one time, these little toy and teacup sized dogs proved to be a joy to have and not hard to train. All but one of those very loved fur babies have passed on now, but I have a new toy poodle puppy who is carrying on the tradition of being my little "bestie." She's great!

I have a big red & white Basenji named Luke. Luke is a rescue dog that was returned to the shelter several times because he was very stuborn and previous adopters had tried to beat the stuborness out of him which of course didn't work and only made him scared and aggressive. He was 2 yrs old when I got him just days before he was to be put down. Luke is a mix breed Basenji and he looks and acts exactly like a pure bred Basenji in every detail but he weighs in at a muscular 115lbs. We have been together for about 10 years now and I am so glad that I took the chance adopting him. I've had 4 other rescues in my adult life and Luke is very special to me and me to him. With a lot of love and trust his early aggressive traits are long gone and we are best buds. We do most everything together and when I have to leave him at home he sits and looks out the window until I get back and always meets me at the door. Luke never smells but he does shed during the spring in Florida. Luke is very quiet and does not or can not bark but he does talk to me when he has something to say. We live on a small farm and Luke rules the property. He is also the seargent at arms at my business and goes to work with me every day.

As a groomer… ALL DOGS SHED and SMELL. To a certain degree. And most dogs like the ones listed still have grooming and maintenance. Do proper research. All dogs have to be combed or brushed regularly. All dogs have to be bathed regularly. All dogs have different degrees of shed and maintenance based on breed and coat. Proper research and asking questions to those who are experienced will help you find the right pup for you. Even humans shed and smell. So asking dogs not to is sort of weird lol.

💯 Which is why I'll never buy a dog. Nasty inbred, unnaturally aggressive (compared to the animal kingdom), retarded, unstable mutants that can't groom themselves and are dependent on humans for literally every single thing (they "evolved" facial muscles in order to BEG better). I respect ALL animals, except the mutt. They shouldn't exist. We don't need them. Every "job" they have can be done by another trained animal, technology or a person.

Schnauzers are also great family members. I was a little surprised you didn't have them as a top breed. They do NOT shed and they are extremely smart. They are also GREAT watch dogs. Mine had a trail all the way around our property making his rounds to make sure nothing tried to get in. He kept squirrels out of the yard (we had a log home and squirrels chew on them), groundhogs, chipmunks or people coming up the driveway. You KNEW when someone was coming. First one was 12 pounds and the other two 22. Daily brushing keeps their coats in good shape between groomings. Rarely did I have to bathe them. I agree with Basenjis being #1. I had a Basenji for 15 years. They shed their winter fur all at once. I’d sit outside in early spring and brush them until their winter fur all came off leaving it’s slightly shorter hair. It could all shed in one day. Then no shedding the rest of the year. They also lick themselves clean like a cat, including their dirty feet. They are exceptionally clean dogs.

And to be honest, Coton is the ONLY breed that has almost 0 odor + almost 0 shedding(everydog shed, but in here, i guess we're talking about them not falling off everywhere), and that's because of the unique fur Cotons have. But the fur requires extra extra care in return to 9 odor. I agree that all dogs have odor. Odor ranking of my dogs would be Schnauzer>>Shitzu>>Poodle>>Coton. It’s the smelliest dog I have ever owned! My partner cannot smell him but he grew up with the breed and this is his 3rd so I think he is used to their odour.
They are very smart, but they are very stubborn and not people focused when it comes to training. He wasn’t food driven his first 3 years so I found him difficult to engage but from 4y onwards he started being food driven so training him ended up a breeze after that and now he can do all the usual tricks plus ring a bell to let us know when he needs to potty.

Another missing breed known for being a non-shedder ( because it has hair, not fur), is the Coton de tulear. They are hypoallergenic, have adorable clown like personalities, are known for dancing on their hind legs and twirling, adaptable to different lifestyles and activity levels, love kids and other pets, and quick and eager to learn new commands. Malagasy cotons are the pure breed, and the AKC standard coton has been mixed with Maltese and bolognasie breeds ( therefore introducing more health issues). My malagasy had embark genetic testing and showed only 6% was not a pure coton. Check your breeders out carefully before getting any puppy!

After having Beagles. We Moved to little fru fru dogs. I didnt think I’d like the little Paris Hilton sized dogs. But they pack a ton of personality in an 8 pound package. We have a Maltese and a Yorkie/Shan. And they don’t shed but they do require frequent baths and brushing. They are great for older people who have a hard time with larger dogs. Even an 70 year old can scoop up a Maltese and go.

Our Havanese Emma is a spazy smart little monkey I adore the heck out of her! We had a Golden Retriever (Charlotte) who passed on at 12 she was a sweetie but she stunk, she was perfectly healthy but always had a doggie odor to her. Emma has no smell, and doesn't shed as she has hair not fur, she does get matts if we let her hair get longer than 1".
The one disadvantage of a Havanese is the barking...Emma barks at even seemingly invisible intruders. She gets along with our cats and they love chasing each other.

The Basengi is my most favorite breed. I had a Basengi/Chihuahua mixed breed that I adopted from a rescue shelter. I named him Schmegeggy because he was very intelligent. Schmegeggy did not smell, but he did shed a lot. BTW Schmegeggy was beautiful and wherever we went he was admired by all, upon which he absolutely thrived.

So true, I had a Minature Schnauzer, best dog I ever had. I bought a Schnauzer, because they said if you have allergies this breed of dog is ok. She was smart, beautiful, loving and I miss her so much. I always felt she acted and behaved like a human, not a dog. I could start crying now because I miss her so much. If your thinking of getting a dog, this breed is great. Also great with children.🐾

They are smart for sure but not the most intelligent breed. Get a border collie or an Australian Shepherd if you want a really smart dog. Although a really smart dog isn’t always the best choice. They will outsmart you at every turn, and can be difficult to manage if they are left alone for long periods. I totally agree that they missed the mark by not including schnauzers on this list. I love the breed and agree that they make wonderful house pets. I adored my schnauzer and she was one of the best dogs I’ve ever owned.

Responds well to consistent training. Loves his big sister,pit/boxer mix.70lb. Angel. Calm, easy going, does have a unique odor, sheds lightly, but what a sweet Angel.😉
