They were incredibly sociable to everyone, as long as it was I who let them in. The only one that took time with strangers was the one that I rescued, so it was a justified behavior given her treatment before I took her. Fortunately,Liz Vols at a shelter. Also knows how to care for abused and neglected animals. Liz adopted Cookie. Unfortunately, Liz, due life couldn't keep Cookie anymore. So I received a call from Liz. She is in TEARS!! Worst sound a Father can hear is his Daughter in tears. So Liz, Momma, Liz's younger brother Josh who lives with us talk about this. Suffice to say, I now have a 70lbs Pit, with a background of neglect, abuse, and abandonment living in my Home. Now, I'm not going to say Cookie doesn't have her problems. She does. But Cookie is so loving, so caring, so happy to finally have a forever home. While I know that my family is providing a forever home to Cookie, and all of us love her, there is still something that both saddens me greatly and pisses me off. Cookie still has horrible nightmares.

I'm afraid of of getting another Rottie, because I may expect the dog to be like Raven. That's too much to expect. I've recently adopted a 70lbs Pit Bull named Cookie from my daughter, who could no longer care for her. Turns out that an older couple isn't a prime landing spot for a large energetic dog. But Cookie is sweet and gentle. I'm not going to allow Cookie to end up back in a shelter. I'll figure it out. If anyone has advice about dealing with Pit Bulls I'd greatly appreciate it. This breed is new to me. I have experience with Shepard's, Rotties, Collies, Giant Standard Poodles, St. Bernards, etc. I have not dealt with Pits. Any advice is welcome. Now Cookie is a lover. She cuddles with my wife (recovering from cancer and 2 surgeries) . Cookie has comforted me when I was freaking out about my wife's health. I don't know how to describe her. If she stretches out, she takes up a 1/3 of the bed. If she curls up, she appears to be the size of a basketball. Cookie is a Good Girl. I just need to know how to deal with this breed better. BTW... if the German Shepherd is so neurotic, why are they used in the military and police forces (just as this video states), more than any other dog breed? They must be very loyal and obedient to be used for such jobs. They're even used for therapy and see-n-eye dogs. Perhaps, you're thinking of another breed, or you're just prejudice.
      Every small dog I know, is a neurotic mess, and nobody complains about them being wrongly bred. There are 2 Pugs that live next door that can't shut up when they see my German Shepherd, while my German Shepherd ignores them.

      @@onlyhuman2015 I've literally worked with German Shepherds and many other breeds of dogs. I also went to a medical college where I studied over 300 breeds of dogs. YOU may have had good experiences but as a whole, the breed has gone downhill. Also, police and military USE TO use GSDs more often. NOW Belgian malinois are more frequently used because of their tempers and body structures. It is a breed requirements for GSDs to have a sloped back. Look up older German shepherds. That is a fairly recent breed standard which resulted in more and more having hip dysplasia and one of the reasons police and military use Belgian malinois more often than shepherds. Malinois are VERY high energy dogs and not everyone is fit for the breed. GSDs are calmer as a whole but very much need proper breeding and training to be service animals. It is also 100% possible for a dog to LOSE it's status as a service animal if it's behavior grows unpredictable. This is known to happen with many breeds of dogs, not just shepherds. Look into livestock guardian dogs. German shepherds are FAR from the most popular livestock guardian dogs anymore because of breeding and temperament.

    • @alyssabarnes7442
      @alyssabarnes7442 Před 3 lety

      @@onlyhuman2015 As far as pugs go, a TON of people are upset with how the breed is today. They also look different from how they did in the past. They often require surgery to fix their breathing issues, need a lifetime of monitoring, and most are born via cesarian section due to their heads being larger than their bodies and them getting stuck in the birth canal. This is true for many other brachycephalic dogs as well. As a WHOLE, dog breeding is vastly different than it use to be and most dogs look different now from what they use to in the past. In order to gain these looks (such as the sloped back of GSDs) inbreeding is involved which very much does effect the overall temperament of the breed. While we're at it, chihuahuas are only supposed to be a few pounds at MOST. How many people have you seen that own 10+ people chihuahuas? They have been mixed and do not meet AKC requirements for a true chihuahua. If your German shepherds have not had sloped backs and meet AKC requirements for a show dog, you do not have a true GSD, therefore you have not experienced how GSDs can grow up to be temperament wise.

    Before our Pit Bull died about 4 years ago, every time I had an epileptic seizure, she will bark like crazy to get someone's attention and stay with me, whining occasionally, until I stopped! Then she'd lay down beside me as I slept and recovered! She would also go crazy with joy every time I got home - run around the house like a total nut bag, grab a mouthful of her dry food then come back to me a second later and share her food with me ... and this would go on for at least 10 minutes! And if she didn't know who was at the door or anywhere on the property, she would be fiercely protective but wouldn't attack until she was told to! She was a great member of the family and I'll always miss her!

      I know what you mean about German Shepherds being big babies. One thing I notice about my German Shepherd, there must be a hundred ways she communicates with me... with her ears, tail, how she sits, where she points her nose, when she smiles, how she lays down, when she jumps around, when she spins around like a tornado, the sound of her bark, when she prances around like a puppy (even though she's 10 yrs old)... it goes on and on. I even made a deal with my German Shepherd (Cheyenne), that when she eats all of her dog food, she gets a dog biscuit (a yum yum). So when she's done eating, she'll hunt me down to get her "yum yum".

      Andrew Carter. Speaking of coyotes, I have a story for you. If you are uncomfortable with graphic violence, read no further.
      So, my good friend, Jeff had a 65lbs male Pit Bull named Shadow. I had a 100lbs female Rottweiler named Raven. Raven and Shadow were 10 days apart in birth. They grew up together. They were best friends. So Jeff and I have the dogs out running late at night in the open field , when we suddenly here a commotion. Jeff and I rush to the commotion. We find 2 dead coyotes, 1 with no lower jaw and only half a throat. The other with it's upper jaw and lower jaw facing in 2 different directions, and the back of it's head touching it's back. 2 other coyotes are retreating, with limps. This is were it gets really gross. Raven and Shadow are playing "tug" with a still living coyote. I didn't know what to do at first. It eventually occurred to use their commands. I told them to "drop it" . They did. The poor animal just laid there, panting heavily. I am not proud of what I did next, but I couldn't leave this animal to suffer.
      I pulled out my knife, as the coyote looked up at me. I petted it's head, then shoved my knife through it's right eye, and into it's brain. Should I have left it to die? Or did I do the right thing?

    Completely overlooked 3 GUARANTEED to stand by your side and put their lives on the line: Cane Corso, American Bulldog, and Boerboel. The Cane Corso is renowned for their love of family and protection capabilities. A large breed dog they would happily stay powerfully by your side. The American Bulldog is one of the most family friendly and loving of the breeds. They are crossed with mastiff so they are large and exceptionally strong. I have personally owned an AB and he was the sweetest dog I have ever owned (and I have had 11 labs and goldens). His guarding and protective abilities were top notch. And the South African Boerboel is a powerful dog, up to 140-200lbs that is extremely protective of its property and its owners. Try going after a family member of a Boerboel and see what happens. These dogs were designed to be unafraid of Lions in South Africa!

Speaking of a farm, we also raised St. Bernards that loved cuddles. I've also had Rotts, Pyrenees, boxers and a pit bull, not all at the same time of course, lol. All of those dogs I've had over the years were great protectors and they were almost everyone of them the biggest babies I've ever had. My Rotts I had from the time they were weened and I used to rock them in my rocking chair when they were tiny, but the problem was, when my babies were grown, they still thought I could rock them both in my chair.
