- Coffee is good, coffee is fantastic over a campfire! Today we experiment with a new one legged monopod to support the coffee percolator. We also try a new plasma lighter that also doubles as a flashlight. This could be a very viable option for survival due to its small size and dual use. We also take a look at a surprise package and see whats inside.

Canned bread 1 Betty Crocker 0 🤣
Lol! Comment of the year Mike!
In that episode Dave was carrying a Morakniv Kansbol, the unique blade shape of which made it easier for him to rescue the distressed gingerbread cake. This is the first bushcrafter to demonstrate this technique on youtube. 🙂
MonkeyMike. You misspelled betty crocker when you meant better crapper...lol

I remember eating canned brown bread while family camping as a kid. Seemed like everything tasted good when we were camping, even if there was a little wind blown sand in your food. Thank you for this fun video. Happy New Year!
Food tasted good even if we accidently dropped in dirt.
Wipe it off and eat anyway🤣
Thanks for sharing that Robin. This was the first time I've ever heard of it. And a happy new year to you too
Good times. 👍
As a kid growing up in MA brown bread, baked beans (sometimes w/a hot dog) was a standard evening meal when the cupboards were bear. We loved it. The bread is already cooked, usually we didn't heat it up, ate it sliced up cold. Sometimes we warmed it up in the oven first. Cream cheese & jelly would taste great on it. The sweet flavor in the bread is molasses.
same here, Medford, MA. my Mom would heat it in a pan with a bit of butter and toasted on both sides. We ate it with beans and hot dogs as well :)
THANK YOU someone else that has eaten this it is good with cream cheese my mom would make her own and steam it for hours in the oven
This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching william
I always have fun watching you and Nick !! I always learn more about camping and making things better ! Great informative video as always Dave! Take care and stay safe my friend!!
Thanks Troy, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
When I think about camping, the BEST memories are sitting by the fire at night drinking coffee and talking! Off to a great start. Blessings for an awesome 2023 for ya'll.
Sounds good to us Granny! We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Dave I love the way you experiment with new ideas. You also design and make your own equipment. I am just waiting for that one brain storm where you can patent and sell your own products.Good to see you both out in the woods.
This person has a good point Dave. I want to be one of the first to purchase from your product line.🔥
Thanks, Im glad you like my gear. No telling, I may hit on a winner one day! Thanks for watching
I've cooked bread-in-a-can over a campfire but I used a bean can and my own recipe. Baking over a fire has a steep learning curve but once you get it mastered, anything is possible. Looking forward to seeing more baking. Thanks Dave and Nick!
Yep, there's a curve but it often varies due to the types of wood you'll have available. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
Hi Dave, I love watching your CZcams videos. I'm a 52 yr old New England Boy from Boston and have been living in Tampa for years. I came down in 96, and that one off the things my wife and I couldn't find at the grocery store, along with B&M baked beans. Some stores have it.
Get it again, and try boiling the can for 20 to 30 min. Let's cool a few minutes, then slice it. Or you open the can take it out of the cold and slice it,
And grill it with some butter in a pan and get beans and let the bread soak up the juice. That's how we cooked it camping and growing up and at the house. Still love it.
Hello Joe! Thanks for the info. Most on here are saying to slice it and fry it in a pan o butter, I think that sounds great! Thanks for watching.
Successful 2023 bread bake. Brother I say this will all my heart. Father and sons and the time that you spend together is priceless! God bless y’all.
Amen Brother!
Finally I can get this year off to a good start. Howdy Dave an Nick. Hope everyone had a Great Christmas an New Year.
Great to hear that Matt! We had a good Christmas and we hope yours was good too!
Your Son has great taste in coffee, love that brand of Italian coffee. I wish you 2 the best for 2023 . 🎉🥳
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. We both LOVE Lavazza! Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
I think that B@M brand bread you have there is also makers of world renowned baked beans ,and keep cooking those breads over the fire and you will finally find just the right way to do it,and it's good to see You and Nick starting off the new years with an adventure in cooking in the woods. Thanks and see you on the next one!
Everyone says its the same company, I love those beans! Im glad you liked it Dennis. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Too funny! I’m a Bostonian so grew up with Boston brown bread, usually making it but sometimes buying it in the can. We had it with either butter or plain cream cheese, and most often with homemade Boston baked beans.
Sounds great Marjie!
Happy New Year to my favorite outdoor crew. We all love you guys you work so well as a team. A dad and his son in the woods doing stuff together you can't beat that. You always have so many great ideas about how to do stuff in the woods. Also you showed a nice example of fire safety for that you get ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Gotta clear them leaves away to the dirt! Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Awesome Mono-Pod. Great Looking Coffee & Bread Bring On The P.B. Plasma Works Great ! Hap-E 2023 Fellas !
Thanks Terry, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!

Thanks Ofer, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Happy New Year to my favorite bushcrafters!
Thanks! And a happy new year to you too
Dave and Nick that was
"Fun In The Woods".
I like the monopod idea.
Going to get the saw, welder and file out to make one.
Fantastic to hear that!
The stem on the coffee pot filter looked like a good option for your pot holder idea. I got some extra ones so im gonna try it.
Good thinking
Happy Days right back at you two. Great start to the year for he gets food and coffee in the woods
We are glad you liked it Tyler, Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Oh yes, B&M brown bread in-a-can, with a little spread butter, and some good coffee. Such a simple treat. Thank you, guys, for reminding me that this stuff still exists. It IS going to be a good year!
It was good enough we will have it again! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Can you eat that bread right out of the can or does it have to be baked?
@@tracker5849 It's a fairly dense, slightly sweetened brown bread, already baked, and once pushed out of the can is easily sliced. Heated or cold, it's (IMO) good.
A spokesperson for the company confirmed that they began canning bread, which is still steam cooked, in 1928. I was introduced to it about 20 years ago. I just toast and butter it.
Interesting, This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching
Hiya Dave and Nick. Okay, bread in a can ... now I've heard of it all lol. Rock On!
Lol! Aint it cool? We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Happy 2023 guys.! Glad to see you both are back to "The Cooking & Coffee with Nick". We love that mono coffee stand, we have something similar but for grilling trout & marron that we kidnapped from our neighbour's dam...!!! Just kidding, we exchange goods for what we need & what they required. Fair trade with a hand shake deal. It's a rarity nowadays. Bread in a Can..!? It looks more like Christmas Pudding with raisins soaked with Rum.! Lavazza is a great coffee blend, it is very popular in Australia. Now for a little 2 cent worth - We just snip 2 holes on the can itself so hot evapouration can take place when on the coals. Wedge the can in between 2 fairly thick branches so it won't turn. Periodically turn the can for consistency. When it's time, take the can off & let it cool down enough so you can open it with a can opener. The inside will still be very hot so be careful. Cut is straight down the middle & you could smell the sweetest aroma vapourising out. Slice into wedhges & serve with honey or thick hot chocolate. Cowabunga.!! Now that you've got that cool oven, how about doing an overnighter with a full roast meal in the bush? A challenge, if you choose to accept it. Your show is always entertaining. Cheers Cobber.! Greetings from Australia.
Thanks, and we are glad you liked it. Thanks for all the comments and info. Very interesting cooking it in the can. Ill do some overnighters but Im afraid people are sick of seeing my oven set up. Lol. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
I grew up in Boston, I love brown bread. I wrapped it in aluminum foil popped it in the oven for 20 minutes put some butter on it and enjoyed it. Sadly since moving to Missouri I can’t find it anywhere, but I have ordered it from Amazon 👍👍 this video was very nostalgic for me. I’m glad you and Nick liked it.😊
Very cool to hear that! I liked this but everyone says slice it up and toast it in butter for an even better treat! I couldn't believe how expensive this was on Amazon. Thanks for watching Jan
I love B&M brown bread! I grew up eating that on Saturday nights with beanies and weenies! Great memories.
Very cool to hear that!
That was pretty neat Bread in a Can. Enjoyed it Dave & Nick
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Chuck
Hey brother! It's great seeing ya out and about man. Sure has been awhile (on my end of course). I hope all's been well with you and yours my friend!
-John
Always great to hear from you again John! Things are ok round here, I hope all is well your way. Take care and thanks for watching brother
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Really glad to hear that things are going ok for ya buddy! All's well over this way too (thanks by the way). Take good care brother!
Fun video. Brings back memories. My granny use to make that kind of brown bread in cans. She won ribbons at the fair for it. I actually have her her recipe. It's better than eating cake and cookies
Would you mind sharing the recipe?
I'll try to find the recipe. It's kinda non specific on amounts. She went by looks . I tried to keep track of what she was using
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Frank! That would be awesome if you shared that recipe! I could put it on video.
It’s crazy. After 10 years of where I was to now. I’m back watching you
I'm glad you stopped back by and watched my friend!
One of the most useful implements around the campfire is?
A long pair of all metal grilling tongs!
You can use them to safely handling food fire or anything hot that's small and awkward to handle.
Yep, that is a good idea if you can find a decent lightweight set
Happy New Years- I never heard of that canned bread before. Ive heard of making blueberry cake using a canteen cup lined and covered with foil, but have not tried it yet. Thanks for the video. Be safe out there-
Canned bread was a big shock to me too! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
I had moved up to NH back in 1982 my kids loved that B&M Canned Bread its got to be toasted and buttered. it's delish...
Sounds good toasted. Always great to hear from you Krissy!
Glad it turned out well for you, I'll have to add that to my food preps. Looking forward to another year of Dave and Nick!
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Been enjoying this bread for years. A very simple way to heat is to leave it right in the can and lay it in the coals for a bit, rotating several times. Just be careful when the can starts to expand you take it off the heat. I always use 'the 3 click method', it will produce 3 audible clicks before it blows up, (learned that one from Edward Abbey). Have actually heated many canned foods this way. You could also drop it into a large pot of boiling water to heat. This is actually how most canned goods are processed initially. In fact the bread is fully cooked even cold right from the can. The sweet taste you experience is actually molasses. Good luck.
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching
I’m happy I got two of those sp53 bolo choppers in the collection as they are mean blades. With the way the world is going, wood processing tools are going to be priceless
Oh you have two good choppers for sure!
I'm in my late 40's and have never seen bread in a can! I've had a "first gen" plasma lighter like the one you have. They work good unless it gets cold, then you better have a back up! The plastic latch for the cap will break then you have to rely on the safety latch to keep it closed. I like your mono pod concept! You're always innovating new and thoughtful/purposeful bushcraft items! Love what you and Nick do here! Thank you and I look forward to seeing more from you in the new year!
Im 55 and this canned bread thing is all new to me! Ill remember what you said about the lighter and plan ahead. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
It is always a treat to have a "Fun in the Woods" video to pop up in my notifications. Even when it is pretty much a total cock-up like this one. You got such a late start that it was already darkling by the time you started the fire, and things kind of went downhill from there. But you were having fun, so we were having fun.
Bread in the can was not new to me, nor was the combo flashlight/plasma lighter - I have a couple of those. One is a black version of the one you have, Dave. The other one is shaped more like a conventional lighter, and is leafy camo colored.
But I have never seen the wrist light that Nick was wearing. I would have liked a closer look at that. It seems to have a pretty wide throw which reduced the visibility in the camera even when it wasn't pointed directly at the camera.
Looking at the way the bread turned out this time, I think Betty Crocker feels she got the last laugh, at least as far as 'presentation' is concerned.
Now I go back to waiting for your next exciting adventure. Be well, and Happy New Year!
Lol, well after all, the name of the channel is fun in the woods. Not success in the woods. I'll get Nick to tell more about his wrist light in the future. Thanks for watching and a happy new year to you too
The machete has the shape of my
1943 marine medic machete...
The 1943 machete is shorter ,
It's a beast of a short machete.
So happy to see ya two put up a video
Thanks for watching Dale
Man you guys are like the Laurel and Hardy of the outdoors! You sure have fun grab assing in the woods! Great entertainment, thanks for making these videos.
Lol, it's all about fun! Too many Rambos on CZcams taking everything too seriously.
Thanks for the video , Dave. Best wishes to you and Nick. Like folks in the South, on the west coast, we’re having more than our share of rain storms. Remember, when all else fails, wear your water wings… 😬 - Tim
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Man we are getting some serious rain! Thanks for watching Tim
Hi Dave & Nick, thanks for sharing: have fun in the woods, continue enjoy live, let us enjoy live. All the best, Michael
Hello Michael and we are glad you liked it Brother!
They also make canned browned bread without raisins, which is my preference.
Growing up, one of our staple Saturday Night meals was canned brown bread with hot dogs and homemade baked beans. Delicious!
I think Id prefer no raisins too. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching!
Yep, another good one Dave and Nick. I have never had it, but I'm shocked you have never heard of Brown bread in a can. It used to be relatively cheap but now it's kind of expensive. You can thank the preppers who buy it by the case. Ilike the Mono-pod, very minimalist.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Everyone says that bread in a can is a huge deal up North. I've never left the south so I only know southern fare. Lol. Take care and thanks for watching brother
that bread use to be my luxury treat when in the outdoors! WOW! the memories that brings back!
Very cool to hear that Duane!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 use to slice toast it and slather on the butter MMMM!
I used to love eating brown bread out of the can. Ive only had it with butter. Thanks for the video and hope this new year is a good one foryou and Nick.
Thanks Millie, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Whoever sent you that had a great idea! Just seeing you laugh it out was worth it.
Lol, it kinda shocked me!
Fun In The Woods, with Nick & Dave! Anytime I laugh out loud, it’s a good video. Happy New Year, hope it’s a great one for y’all.
We are glad you liked it Randy! And a happy 2023 to you too!
Testing doneness can be accomplished with a clean fine steel wire. Poke it into the cake, bread, muffin or brownie and if it comes out clean the product is done. If it comes out dirty the baked item is not done. We us a wire about 1/64 inch diameter. I wouldn't know the gauge maybe 20 or 22. Still more than 13 years of videos to watch, but I'm catching up. Another interesting and enjoyable video.
I usually use a toothpick for that. I'm glad you're liking the videos George!
Dave, As I recall, my Mom steamed that B&M Brown bread in the can a a pot of water on the stove. We'd take the can opener & pop a couple of slits in the can and put it in a pan of water to steam it. After it steamed for a while we'd take it out of the pan, cut both ends of the can and push it out. Spread some butter & good to go. The brown bread is precooked so all you have to do is warm it up! My 2 cents. 3 Fingers, West Michigan
Thanks for the info! If I ever get another can I'll try that
Thanks for bringing me along again Dave, much appreciated. There's been a few camp meals I've partaken of that would have been better in the dark so I couldn't see what I was eating.
You are very welcome Tim and We are glad you liked it. some foods need to be ate in the dark. Lol. Thanks for watching
Hi Dave, When you are baking with a Dutch oven the rule of thumb is 1/3 coals on the bottom 2/3 on the top . Heat rises that why less heat is required on the bottom. Your oven seems similar to a Dutch oven to me just thinner and different metals. Thanks for the video keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comments Peter.
You are like the Thomas Edison of DIY camping gear. Very clever and resourceful products
Thank you so much David!
Happy new year Dave & Nick another outstanding video keep them coming 👍👍👍
Thanks Dean! And a happy new year to you too
There's a vending machine in Japan that dispenses "Cake in a Can" It's price from $8 to $11.50. It in a small 12 oz size can. 8 bucks for a can of cake is way too much for me! Thank for the video Dave, nice to have Nick back. Take very good care and stay healthy gents.
That's is expensive! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
Happy New Year guys! I hope it’s a great year for us all…
You are so right everything tastes and smells so much better in the woods. Even though I don’t have a lot in the way of woods, where I live. It’s always so great getting to spend time with you guys, it’s like getting to be part of your family. 😊
Thank you!
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. The bread was good but the coffee was incredible! Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
You was right Dave, it was interesting video. Cool pot stand and lighter for sure. Strange bread. Have a great new year guys 👍🏻
Thanks Matt, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a happy new year to you!
Hi Dave and Nick! Happy 2023! This was a dang sight better than Betty's Burnt Blah! LOL. Thanks for a little bit of remote fun in the woods!
Im glad you liked it. It was definitely better not burnt. Lol. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Brown bread is already cooked in the can. It just needs to be heated through. Often served with baked beans and either ham or hot dogs. Comes with or without raisins. Made with molasses.
This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 you guys did well. This is a really regional item to New England usually. I know it is found in other places, but I grew up with brown bread in Rhode Island. I have lived in Connecticut for many years and it’s in our grocery stores but it’s not as popular as in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Absolutely Fantastic!
Thank you Sharon!
Never heard of bread in a can, thanks for sharing. Enjoyed video yes fun in the woods.
This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching Kevin!
I know that bears feel the same way about eating in the dark too.
Lol! I guess so
We got to have canned bread a couple times a year with dinner in the 50's. Considered a treat at our house.
That's very cool to hear that! Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching
Many Blessings.
Bread in a can is old time favorite for camping👍
Thanks! I liked it.
You guys rock as always great to see you two together in the woods😊
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Kevin!
I had that canned bread when we went camping, when I was a kid. I really liked it then, and was thinking about it a while ago. I wish it wasn't so expensive, I'd keep a few cans around just for a supplement to our camp foods. As is, I'd like to get a can or two just for a treat, I remember really liking it. Happy 2023 to you and your family.
I liked it, it was really good. I was shocked when I saw how much it was on Amazon! Thanks for sharing that info and thanks for watching
Great video, thanks 👍
Thanks, Im glad you liked it.
Who is that in the video with you dave? Oh that's right it's nick the working man! Good to see you both together again cooking in the woods. Love the mystery bag of food what a fun concept to try! Man when you whipped out that bread in a can I lost it, never seen or heard of that before very funny thanks for great video
Lol! The one and only Nick! Im glad you liked it. I hadnt heard of this bread either but according to all the comments here its a very popular staple of food up North. Thanks for watching
There’s no redemption with Betty Crocker, divorce her and start from scratch 🤣. Blessings 👊🏼
Lol! Ill have to make up with ole Betty at some point
Grew up eating brown bread, its molasses you were tasting . We often slice it and fry in butter but its edible straight from the can. Happy new year
That molasses flavor was really good! Thanks for watching and a happy new year to you!
Cheers!! Happy new year!
Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
You guys are so cool!! Out in the wilderness crankin out some good coffee and some brown bread on a fire in the dark! That’s impressive!! The ears poppin might be from thunderstorms movin in. Those noises you were hearin coulda been the samsquanch movin around the woods tryin to get a cuppa Daves monopod coffee!!👍🏼. Great stuff here!!!

Another great video guys. Happy New Years.
Thanks and a happy new year to you too!
You are awesome at evaluating products we shy away from because of no experience with the products you show and I appreciate that. One thing I have not found anyone address is sleeping bags with zippers that don't bind up on you at 2:00 am. 0° F you've answered nature's call and stoked the fire not the time or mindset to deal with a bound zipper. Just a thought for you if there is another solution or not. Keep up the good work and God bless.
Thanks! I'm glad you like what all I do. In my experience pretty much all cheap sleeping bags have the zipper bind. North Face and Snugpak have zipper liners that stop binding. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too
Thanks for filming Dave and Nick! 👍😁
Im glad you liked it!
I got a can in the pantry... I gotta give it a go. Great "Can & Cook" Dave! Thanks for sharing with us all!.
Sounds great! This was pretty good baked but most of the comments are saying sliced and pan fried in butter is the absolute best! Try it and thanks for watching my friend
Growing up in New England we had lots of meals of Hot Dogs , Baked Beans and Canned Brown Bread , mostly Saturday night but sometimes Friday instead . B&M makes the canned baked beans too , B&M Boston's best is my wife's favorite but mine is B&M original . Boiled or steamed dogs without hot dog buns a crock of beans and brown bread wrapped in tin foil heated in the oven , Toot Toot enjoy. Thanks
Thanks for sharing that! They actually sell the B&M brick oven beans down south.
Happy New Year! Love you guys. Keep up the entertaining and informative videos.
Thank you Lani! We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Great video,
I've been eating B&M Brown Bread in a can since I was a little kid, it's good stuff. One tip, you don't have to bake the brown bread in the can, it's already cooked, you can just open the can and eat it without heating it. Or you can just warm it up if you want it heated, you don't have to bake it, it's already baked.. It's also great with butter or cream cheese.
JT
The, I'm glad you liked it. This was totally new to me, the can said bake for 30 minutes so that's what I went by. Thanks for watching
I get that coffee when I go to the old cuntry to visit family, the grind is for use in a moca pot. Good stuff
Its one of our favorites!
Just an FYI, I grew up with brown bread in a can, it was and is always available in the stores year round. The bread is actually cooked in the can when you buy it so all you have to do is heat it through or toast it if you want. The "honey flavor" you were talking about is molasses, that is what makes the bread brown. Glad you liked it, its a New England staple!
I looked it up to read Directions and the "heating" suggestions.. and it does look like they expect you to slice it first
This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching
Thanks for your videos from the uk 🇬🇧🙂👊🏻✌🏻👍🏻
Thanks, Im glad you like them!
I have always loved the crazy things that you and nick come up with.
The answer to nicks question about the light is if it’s not lighting then he saw a alien 👽 spacecraft way off in the distance shooting its I’m going to snatch up beam.
And the knocking that was heard was always a Bigfoot, he was smelling the bread 🥖.
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Lol, aliens and bigfoot? I hope not both. Thanks for watching

Great to hear that and We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Happy New Year Dave and Nick!!!
Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
Canned Brown Bread, a New England tradition......So the best way to eat that is to take it out of the can, slice it and then toast the slices in your toaster. After its hot and just starting to get hard on the edges you slather it in butter. It pairs well with hotdogs and beans on a Saturday night.
Sounds good!
A New England classic. You need to toast it crispy, slather it in butter then before the butter melts, hit it with a topping of baked beans. There ya go for sure yep.
Sounds good! This was an all new thing for me so I didnt know.I read the label on the can and it said bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Thanks for watching
Betty Crocker definitely needs you 2 for a commercial!
Lol! I bet they hate us.
Thank you guys for sharing this. I've read some on canned bread in the past and seeing you boys enjoying it makes me think I may grab some to try. Here's to a fantastic new year!
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. It was pretty good but everyone is saying slice it and toast in butter and its incredible! Thanks for watching and a Happy New year to you too!
