  • Do backpacks hurt your back? How about trying a tactical vest! Here I wanted to scout out a new area and I figured it would be a good chance to wear my Rothco vest and have a chat about it.

Soon as possible I'll be heading into the woods in Ky. or Ohio along the Ohio river. Seen too many old guys pass in hospitals so I'm determined to pass in the woods of old age. Most (not all, but most) people I see that throw a 300' spool of paracord into their pack tend to be wasteful with it. Constantly cutting off random lengths with no real repeatable plan in mind. Often a lot of clumsy knots, and sometimes a lot of cordage left behind when they leave. I hank mine in different lengths as you do, and have a pre-prepared ridgeline with 4 Prusik loops on it. 2 for tensioning a tarp, 2 for hanging something like a little lantern and a SAK. Little trick, if you don't like that one little knot you get at the end when you spool your line out, is to secure it with a clove hitch. Nice and secure, but automatically unties itself when you feed out the last of your line. I like having a small bowline on the other end; it's a quick index for feeding out, plus I often want a usable loop at the end of the line, so I just keep it there 😆.
    Great video as always! Do you plan on showing that paracord bed, chair, table system? Definitely curious about that.

    The Sportsman’s Guide Military Surplus store had several different LBE vests for sale and I picked up two different ones. Full molly webbing on front and back. 11 bucks for one of em and the other was 15. I didn’t expect much but they looked really good in the catalog. The 15 dollar one even came with 6 pouches and has a water bladder pocket inside on the back. It has 2 pockets inside too. I bought an assortment of various pouches and set up each vest for different uses. All used, GI stuff and the quality is above my expectations. I ended up with two full setups for about the cost of one backpack and I agree with you on the added stability of the LBE type setup over a backpack. Of course the backpack has its usefulness when much more stuff needs to be packed with ya but for fair weather, 2 or 3 day trips…can’t beat em. I bought something similar to what you showed in this video several years ago and it was a pos. I sent it back and never tried one again, till I saw the military surplus stuff for so cheap. Figured it was worth a shot and I’m loving em. Great spot there Dave. 👍👍

      @@puddleduck4924 All I can suggest is to contact them. Request to be on their mailing list for catalogs and their email list too. I’ve learned the hard way that, by waiting till I get a catalog, all the popular stuff has been snatched up by the online buyers. Sportsman’s Guide has their Military surplus catalog and a separate outdoors catalog. Both have a good selection and reasonable prices for what you get. Many stellar scores too. I recently got a couple of 80% wool blankets that are large, only $20.00 each. Thick and heavy. I’ve learned that you can’t procrastinate there. If you see something, grab it then. If you aren’t happy with it, they have a good return policy. Good luck, hope this helps.

    Hey, Dave. Inwas thirsty for your bush coffee but reporting back to the home front is important. I understand. First of all, I ain't afraid of the widow makers. I am a divorcee. I am more concerned with orphan makers which would leave my son all alone at the tender age of 23. Secondly, I do not like wearing vest on a trail or a camping trip. I wore LBV's in my service days and I still wear life vest with lots of pockets when I go deep sea fishing. As far as fishing vest goes, I trained myself to put back the terminal tackles in the designated pockets when I am done because my tackles have to be readily accessible when needed. Alas, not so when I am camping. When I set out to go camping or hiking in my younger days, I would neatly pack my gear in the pockets of my vest. But for some unknown reason, I could not bring myself to put the items back where they belong. I usually stuff them in the front pocket of my pants. Pretty soon both of my front pockets would be bulging out and the side cargo pockets would soon be bursting at their seams. When I go home, my pants laiden heavy with most of my gear would arrive 3 hours after my empty vest and myself walk through the door. Now I use a Mollie II back pack with lots of big pouches and my pants pockets are only half full.
    Thanks for the good video and tips. And Dave, for next time, fire and coffee?

    Will Dave glad you found a new place, that's always exciting. As to that vest not so excited about that, when you open the video with the zipper doesn't work and it has a useless belt which is all true we can see that. It just leaves me scratching my head . The vest is a great idea I've had one which is a converted bird vest for probably 30 years or more it did go through about 3 modifications before I got it where I wanted it. I only us it on day trips fishing and hunting away from base camp. I have not used it in years now, as you get older you realize you don't need all that stuff hanging all over you for a walk around a lake fishing or up a river or stumbling through the brush hunting or just taking pictures . I do realize as you said it is a good idea for people with a back problem to reduce the weight of a back pack . This was a great video it has got the old brain cells firing again and another idea or 2 rolling around in the head . Take care HAPPY TRAILS.

I think you should do a yard stream once a month with open discussion about gear. My fanny pack like yours can hold a lot of gear. I bought mine on line for $7 but cannot remember the site. Those 3 small pouches, top left, are for pistol magazines, the 3 lower pouches, bottom right, are for rifle magazines. the lower belt is a pistol belt. The lower left area is for a cross / quick draw holster. Nice set up . Enjoyed the video . ,,, Oh when do we start production of "DAVES CAVES" ?

    Good morning David! I like that style of vest. I have a couple like it that are military surplus in different patterns of camo. With all the available Molle pouches and the modern military fanny pack you can carry a lot of gear. It’s my favorite alternative to a back pack. I made a jig like yours for use at home after watching your video years ago. I was always awed by your ability to pull paracord without it tangling. I love exploring a new piece of ground. Thanks for taking us along.

      Good morning Steve and I'm glad you liked it. Vests are highly under rated for camping and hiking. I think everyone should carry paracord this way. Thanks for watching

  • @kevola5739
    @kevola5739 Před 2 lety

    Mr Dave Canterbury carried hanks of paracord with a bowline on one end and a toggle on the other end. The toggle from one hank would fit into the bowline loop of another hank to make different lengths of line. Therefore 8 foot hanks could become a 8-16-24-32-40 foot line depending on how many hanks you carried. This saved you from cutting paracord into small pieces that may be useless for your next outing. You can also use different colour cords to identify different lengths. I carry one hank that fits around my waist twice. When I have to hang a pack or rig a tool line it is ready to go. I clip my gloves to the cord when I’m wearing it so that I don’t lose them.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a neat idea but I think folks should cut the lengths commonly used by them. For me paracord is cheap an lightweight so I always have a variety of lengths. I love the different colors for different lengths idea.

    That looks like a great place to camp and really scenic. Look forward to seeing a video of your camp set-up there. The vest was interesting... I don't really like them much myself as I find them a bit too bulky when loaded up. The zips are a real pain when they separate like that, no matter what the garment. I was shown a technique once where you get a pair of pliers and squeeze the runner together a small amount. This stops the zip from separating. It often works and I've done it several times successfully though if you squeeze it too much, it ruins the zip. I think your idea of velcro is the better option in this case. More reliable. An interesting watch from you as always. Many thanks and look forward to seeing you at that new site before long. 😃👍👍👍🔥

    It's so green, I doubt your place was flooded during summertime - maybe it was too dry the last couple of years to flood it as they used to in former years.
    IMHO a tactical vest is a very good alternative to a backpack - as you mentioned, you can outbalance the load much better. Almost every tactical vest comes with velcro at the shoulder - if you shorten them, the pistol belt would ride higher and could possible take some weight too. With a proper backpack -setup you want about 80% of the weight resting on your waist to comfort your spinal disks on a long trail or with a heavy load, that's impossible with a vest or a backpack without frame. A Merry X-Mas to you and your family, stay safe Dave

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  Před 2 lety

      I believe the first area where all the trees and vines were muddy was definitely in the flood plane. The area that was green was really high ground, probably never ever flooded. The more I fool with vests and weight distribution the more I'm intrigued. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching, and a Merry Christmas to you!
