- This video covers assembling the Hidden Woodsmen Tropical Lightweight rucksack on the frame, adjustments and testing. Its actually a very simple assembly onto an ALICE frame and I cover the proper adjustments needed to get the most comfort out of this fantastic new style ruck.

I'm 44 been using army surplus since I was a kid . I had no idea you could release the straps by pulling back on that buckle. I learned a ton just watching you put that pack together. Thanks. I've never been so enthralled watching someone do something like put a pack together. I love your videos.
Fantastic to hear that! I love it when an experienced person can pick up some tips from me. Take care and thanks for watching Brian
Dave, you are a crack up...LMAO! I believe you are the only reviewer who's ever got down on his knees, crawled through thickets to show a backpack's capabilities to withstand harsh treatments and remain comfortable while wearing it. You had me sold when you said Malcolm designed it. I have some Hidden Woodsmen gear and quality is never a question. This was so entertaining! Loved it! Thanks for making my morning coffee so much more enjoyable...still LMAO!
Lol, well I like to test stuff just like I plan on using it. And I agree, Hidden Woodsman wouldn't sell it if it wasn't top notch quality. Take care and thanks for watching
Wow, that’s a great pack and you explained everything so well.
The pack didn’t shift on you in the brush and the slope.
Excellent presentation. It sure is nice having you and Nick together
in these video’s. Thank you for taking the time and showing
step by step on attaching the frame.
Thanks Ken, I'm glad you liked it. I love having Nick along on these vids. It make them more fun and easier to film. Thanks for watching
I just want to say I really appreciate the level of detail to your review. So many just mention what they consider the important parts and don't bother with all the details I want to know about BEFORE I make a purchase. Thank you for all the effort.
You are very welcome Karl and I'm glad you like the way I do things!
I always find rucksack assembly videos relaxing..thanks for showcasing this 'medium ALICE' reprise, really enjoyed it
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it my friend!
I may never get the Hidden Woodsman pack but I still enjoy your videos so much.
Having back problem I am very glad that you're telling people to make sure that the weight should be taken by the belt onto your hips and legs and not on your spine and back muscles.
Having the weight on the hips via kidney belt really saves the ole back. In my opinion for folks with severe back issues it's a good option to wear a load bearing vest with pouches attached to the front. Take care and thanks for watching
Thank you brother Dave for another fine video. I enjoyed Nicks comments about his dad's testing procedure. It reminds me of my son's comments when he and I are having a Dad and Son moment. You da man Dave.
You are very welcome John and I'm glad you liked it. Nothing beats father son banter! Lol.
Very good how-to video & always great to have you and Nick working together..God Bless you, Nick and your family.
Thanks Randy, I'm glad you like it and may God bless you too
A absolutely excellent demonstration , of how to assemble a military pack . I stripped my pack off my frame years ago , to use those " round " holes in the frame, to hook in large D -rings to pull my sled in the winter . Works great IMO BTW . I tried a few YEARS ago , to figure how it went back together , and gave up :D But , now on the pack belt . For me a some others I knew in the army . We could NOT carry our packs with the belt riding ON the hips . I tried that a few times , and it rubbed the TOP of my hip bones raw . I learned from a Ranger on my team . I was "" NOT "" a Ranger , but a plain jane , everyday medic . He said to try and place the pad "over " your hip bones , centered on the pad , top to bottom . This was much better for me . I talked to others later , and . A LOT had the same problem with me , but just worked through it until their hips adapted . Keep in mind we wore these things days at a time ... HEAVY . Also , my first CIVILIAN pack I bought ( Osprey ). The REI guy said your hip bones should " mold into " the belt . Then , IDK about now . They could " heat " the belt , and mold / form it "IN" the store . Or it would " mold in " with use . To this day , that Osprey is my go to, comfort pack :D Lastly on the centering the hip belt on the hip bone . If you can carry it riding on TOP of the HB , you will NOT have to tighten the belt as much . Thanks again NICK and dave , I can now source your video for. If and when , I want to put the pack & belt back on the frame . ... gubs
Thanks for the info Gubs, I love hearing from peoples experiences
Malcolm comes through again. What an awesome pack. That thing will last forever. Looks good and comfortable too. I like the sternum strap. That frame sits just right on the belt. I was gonna say. Use that small space of webbing on top and keep the pan go roll in it for easy dealing with rain and cold. Score on the fat wood while testing on the ridge. Great test run here. Thanks for this. I got a new request for my wife on Christmas.😂🐸🍺🤙🔥
Oh man did he ever come through! I never dreamed there could be this big of an improvement over the original ALICE. Let's look forward to Santa bringing you one and thanks for watching Johnny
Glad to see the Stanley Cookset. Great bit of kit. I did some of the mods, removed plastic handle, drilled holes for hanging bale.
For the price that Stanley can't be beat! Thanks for watching Dan
A good video or beginners, boy scouts,,girl scouts ,explorers etc...with my military training,,,you matched each strap perfectly!!!!! But it only brought back memories for me....from 1968...Ft Dix New Jersey!!!!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and thats great to hear I did it right! Thanks for watching
Hey! Great job again! I thought the assembly of the new Alice pack was shown better than any I've ever seen, with lots of attention to the finer details. Climbing through the thicket with the pack on, and Nick mentions the music and ticks, I was waiting to see if you got frustrated and whipped out the machete, lol. But you didn't have to. Head down and let the boonie take the abuse... I also thought the rope use up and down unsure footing was a great addition. I learned a bit about that, too, so thanks! Cheers! Wish I was with ya!
So true.
Thanks Angus! We are glad you liked it. I felt like those tests were just a common part of what we do with packs. Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Hey Dave. I was just revisiting this video and when you got to the part about the pack falling over, and strapping your wool blanket underneath to mitigate that, it reminded me of something I saw on Blackie Thomas' Ground Pounder Series of CZcamss where he has something called an Alice Frame Shelf that does the same thing as well as allows you to remove the pack and us the shelf to carry other items such as a jerry can, etc. Anyway, I looked those up and they're only about $15 to buy, but someone with your machining and metal fabrication skills could likely fashion something like that, but better. I just thought I'd let you know, in case it was something you might be interested in. Don't work too hard, brother! (shoot, I know you are because it's that time of year again). Take care, anyway!
Hey there just wanted to say I love your channel and its youtubers like you who have inspired me to keep on creating and getting outdoors thanks heaps hoops from Australia.
You are very welcome and I'm glad you like what all I do!
Morning Dave! Been waiting for this!! Woo! 😁😁 Coffee and Fun in The Woods.. yay Friday morning!
Happy Friday Ruth! And thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 .. Malcom will just have to put a link on the website to this video 😜😜 nobody else would do such a thorough job of explaining and testing it!! Lol
@@ruththinkingoutside.707 I hope he does!😁
This was great! Thank you for taking the time to show us everything about the pack and how well one can maneuver while wearing it. Also, very entertaining as usual! Have a great weekend!
Thank you Beverly! We are glad you liked it and I hope you had a good weekend too
thank you dave! You are a OG of youtube bushcraft. i appreciate your support so much ! 🌲
You are very welcome Malcolm, and I thank you for creating such a awesome rucksack!
Oh those awesome and fun comments from Nick made me laugh out loud. Seems like a good packpack. Nice to see and hear you both out there in the woods. Greetings
Lol, hes a riot. Im glad you liked it and its always great to hear from you Ulrica!
Great review/comparison on pack. And thank you to Nick for being out with your father filming. Your vids are very helpful. You guys are great! Keep up the great work!!!!
We are glad you liked it and thanks for watching !
I have been eyeing one of the hidden woodsmen packs since I saw my first review of it and since then every review has always been positive but your tell like it is no nonsense show and tell has definitely been more informative than most. Thanks
Sounds great Anthony! From my experience these pack are probably the most durable I've ever seen. I've owned lighter weight packs but every one has ripped prematurely. Thanks for watching my friend
Great demo and information about the Alice style packs! Really appreciate you passing on your knowledge! Enjoy your new, killer HW Pack Dave! Cheers!
Thanks Brother! I'm glad you liked it. It's a killer pack!
Excellent review of the Hidden Woodsmen tactical back pack used the the Alice back pack frame! Great seeing you, & Nick working together to film . Be safe, stay healthy, & God Bless everyone.
Thanks Ron! We are glad you liked it and may God bless you too brother
I really like this rucksack. Thanks for reviewing and putting it to the test in the woods! That's my favorite camo color & pattern.
I'm glad you liked it Marjie! Nothing beats good ole woodland camo. Thanks for watching
Great information and presentation 😃
This pack looks like a hybrid between the medium and large Alice packs.
Medium sized ruck with large exterior pouches.
After all the upgrades that I did to my old medium Alice, fastex buckles, extra pouches through the webbing, improved shoulder straps and kidney belt, MSS carrier attached to the bottom, I still love my old pack.
This would be a great pack for someone just getting started in camping/survival scenarios, that doesn't have the old stuff laying around.
Love your stuff, keep up the great work!
Thanks Darrell, I'm glad you liked it. Definitely a good pack to start out with because it's built well enough to last 10 to 20 years. I love my original Alice gear but the prices for what's left has skyrocketed
From the looks of it, I'd say you have a winner Brother! Thanks for taking the time to show it being put together. Good video ~John 👍🏻
Oh it's one tough pack! Thanks for watching brother John
Extremely useful and informative video. 👍🏻👏🏻
There are so many products and variations out there that it sometimes gets utterly confusing.
Thanks for sharing, Dave; really enjoyed the presentation.
I'm glad you liked it my friend! Thanks for watching
Thank you both for another great video, I always enjoy your content and eases of humor.
You are very welcome Lane and we are glad you like it!
Thank you Brother Dave and Nick for a wonderful video.
You are very welcome John and we are glad you liked it!
Another entertaining video. Thanks Dave, I always learn something when I watch your fun videos.
You are very welcome and I'm happy you liked it!
Kept waiting for you to zig-zag while running with the pack on, like you were being shot at. 😂Never know when you might accidentally walk into a still site or a Mary Jane patch. Good to see you boys out and about !!! I actually learned something from this !!!! ...and I thought I knew pretty much everything about how a pack is supposed to be worn. Thanks for Re-schooling me on packs !!! My niece is heading out to Colorado for 2 weeks of backpacking. I’m definitely gonna share this with her. Thanks again !!!!
Lol, I probably should practice that zig zag! I'm glad you liked it brother and thanks for watching
Love the pack and bar especially, I remember being in JROTC in high school having gear like that, I miss those days:)
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I would have loved being in ROTC
Thanks Dave for showing the ins an outs to the pack an how to hook it up. That pack is absolutely awesome. 👊💀⚔🇺🇲⚔
You are very welcome brother and I'm glad you liked it!
I have never used an Alice pack before but they always look very comfortable. I usually have an internal framed rucksack. An osprey 70ltr. Still, watching you disect your equipment so that everyone knows just how it's made and put together, is always entertaining. As is watching you both having fun in the woods, of course. Another great video from you both. Looking forward to the next with all your views on machetes. Many thanks again. 😁👍👍. Hope the ticks kept away.
Alice packs are great if loaded and adjusted properly. Done wrong they are torture. Lol. We are glad you like the videos and thanks for watching
As a long time fan of the Alice ruck , I have two, been waiting for a company to make a modern version of the Alice. This Hidden Woodsman version is exactly what I want. Your gear room and field testing of this ruck is outstanding. Thanks Nick for your camera work and commentary. Really looking forward to the machete review. Alan R.
Fantastic to hear that Alan and this ruck fits the bill! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching brother
Check out Tactical Tailor. He makes improved military packs but you'll need to secure a bank loan to afford one lol!
I like that pack! Alice style is something too many of us are used to! Ugh! I even made my own Alice frame about 35 years ago from aluminum that had a folding shelf to load a game bag to.
Thanks Craig, really hard to beat the good ole Alice design
Good morning Dave! Thanks for the video! Have a great weekend!
Good morning Jerry! Thanks for watching and you have a good weekend too
That's an awesome looking pack Dave, looks especially cool with the blanket strapped to the bottom. Thanks again Dave, and take care mate 👍🙂
Thanks Mike, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Great rucksack and review Dave, but amazing crawling action minutes with it and comments from Nick are hilarious. As always funny and great video with info , love it and big thx !
I'm glad you liked the review and the crawling! Thanks for watching my friend
I hung on every word you said. Now I have something else to buy. Really cool Dave.
Fantastic to hear that Joe!
You got off easy on this vid NICK. Not editing and just filming. Good job. Soon as I heard " Hidden woodsman" I was lost in the cost. Just have to admire the workmanship in this case. I do love learning the principles though.
Lol, Nick always takes the easy route on the ole vids. I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for watching brother
Action Dave! Love it. In the market right now for a tough modern ALICE and that pack sold me. Definitely Fun in the Woods
You've found it! This is one durable comfortable ruck. Thanks for watching my friend
Thanks for the video. It’s one of the best you have had. A lot of great information. Keep them coming and have fun.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it that much Charles! Thanks for watching
Coffee, bacon & eggs, and a Reallybigmonkey1 video. Great start to my morning!
Sounds good to me! Thanks for watching
Great review. I still use my old Alice pack even tough I have more expensive and better hiking packs now. Love the lighter fluid comment! I had a horrible and rainy fly fishing trip in the Appalachian mountains of NC last year. I actually found half a bottle of lighter fluid left at a campsite. I had a roaring fire every night/morning. Even stashed the rest in case it happens again seeing how I am on this creek often thru out the year. Thanks so much Dave & Nick.
Thanks Brad, we are glad you liked it. Lol, Nick said never underestimate the power of lighter fluid!
Great video as always. I've learned a lot from your channel for sure. I just ordered the same pack, can't have enough camping equipment. Looking forward to seeing your next video.
Thank you.
Thanks Matthew, I'm glad you liked it and learn from from my videos. You're going to love that pack! Thanks for watching
Being an absolute bushcraft greenhorn, I had no idea those were called Alice frames. (Or how adjustable they really are. ) Thank you Dave and Nick, for another fascinating video. 😎
You are very welcome and we are glad you found it helpful my friend!
Great backpack Dave! Thanks for showing it to us. 👍😁
I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching!
That's definitely a sweet pack. Thanks for the detailed explanations on mounting, etc... instead of just showing the typical walking with it then what you put in it.
Great vid! Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! I like to test gear just like I use it. Thanks for watching brother

Going up and down the hill. That was great. Thank You for sharing. Good video. Stay Safe!!!
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Wayne!
After watching this video about 5 times over, I've finally decided to snag one! Though in ranger green as I don't have any camo clothes to fit it. Lots of olive drab in my possession though. Cant wait to receive it and put it to the test!! Thank you for this video!
Very cool to hear! I'll say this, you will definitely get a lifetime of use out of this pack! Its the toughest I've ever seen
@@Reallybigmonkey1how are you liking it two years on? Would love to see another updated review after 2 years!

Thanks Sue!
Thank you, Dave! Your ingenuity has inspired me! I acquired a boy scout pack frame and will try my hand at affixing a similar pack.
You are very welcome and that sounds like a killer project!
Great video my friend. Makes me want to get the hip and straps for mine. The molle ll straps I use are much thicker but were not made for the Alice. Learned a few things about adjustment too. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all that. Thank you
You are very welcome my friend and I'm glad you liked it! I actually think the Hidden Woodsman kidney belt is more comfortable than the molle kidney belt
Hidden Woodsman is great stuff! I don’t have one of his big packs yet but it’s coming. Thanks Guys!
Absolutely the best hand made packs available! Take care and thanks for watching Troy
Thanks for the review Dave. Still love my alice pack (I'm old school like that) lol but if my pack ever gives out, this will be my go to.
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it! Tough to beat an Alice
Malcolm does great work. Can't wait to see the pack in action. You and nick take it easy.
Oh yes, his stuff is like artwork! Take care and thanks for watching
Thanks for a “real” test Dave! It’s hard to find a comfortable pack but it looks like you found one!

Hi Dave. Thank you for ruining my day! I was perfectly happy with my new old Alice medium pack and now you show me the improved version! Nevertheless I will continue to use the old pack!. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
Hello Nigel! Lol, I'm sorry I almost ruined your pack. Continue to enjoy it and thanks for watching brother!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 You are forgiven - this time! LoL
I have 2 and use the Stanley Cook Pots. Made a complete kitchen out of them with BRS Stove, GSI cup and other stuff inside. Awesome cook kit.

Very informative, great video Dave. I know it's early but happy Father's day sir.
Thank you Omar!
Good morning :D Can't wait to watch this!! I saw the post on I.G. Have an excellent weekend.
Good morning brother and I'm glad you liked it. You have a good weekend too!
Dave , I have cried so much from laughing I’m dehydrated . These was a good video, enjoyed it. That was a nice looking pack . I have a lc1 and a lc2 and a USMC ILBE rucksack which will hold everything but the kitchen sink. If you don’t have one of them , check it out .
And for the Alice pack in the video with the waterproofing coming off the lid , I sprayed mine with Flex seal (black) and after it dried I hit it with OD green camo paint and it looks and worked good.
Thanks for the video Dave and Nick .
Waiting on the next one.
I'm glad you liked it Johnny! I have a ACU molle 2 ruck for longer trips but I have always wanted a Ranger ILBE pack. Take care and thanks for watching
That is a great looking pack. Another awesome video!

You are very welcome Tyler and I'm glad you liked it. With the sheer size of the three outer pockets its amazing the amount this will carry. Especially if you stuff it just right. Thanks for watching

Nice new rig, Dave! Enjoy it many weekends! As old school as I was for many years, I distinctly recall when we all discovered "fast-ex" buckles and nylon webbing to replace those horrid old pot-metal things and cotton webbing! I often wonder if the military has awakened to these improvements yet?!
Happy Trails to you and Nick!😁👍❗️
Thanks Roy! I'm glad you liked it. Oh I remember that old webbing and buckles, horrible. Modern military packs are nothing but molle webbing velcro and fastex buckles. Thanks for watching brother
Anything From Malcolm Is Top Notch, Davey ! Great Show & Tell ! Thanks Bud ! Hay Nick ! ATB T God Bless
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and may God bless you too Terry
Outstanding comparison… thanks professor

Great attitude you 2 have together great video . I have to say weave been using Alice packs for over 30 years I believe and have never had a failure of any kind and we have put them through hell . The only changes I've made is adding the shelf happy trails .

Thanks Jimmy, I'm glad you liked it. Hidden Woodsman gear is definitely top notch
Thanks, Dave, for the very instructional video. Took me right back to Dec. 1986. I appreciate the honest opinions you can give because you've paid your own money. But I like my molle 2 ruck a lot better than Alice pack. I had my fill of them in the olden days. Already waiting for machete showdown video. Go Pearsons!
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it! I like my molle 2 for long trips but for overnight trips I always grab a medium Alice. Thanks for watching and see ya in the machete video!
Nice I really like the pack myself, great video keep them coming my friend.
Thanks Mike, I'm glad you liked it
Awesome video and great how to on the assembly! I've been thinking of picking one of these up to go along with my Deepwoods Ruck by Malcom since these are lighter. Also I roll the excess strap up and use the velcro to stop it from unwinding
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Man that would be cool to own both! Thanks for watching my friend
Great video, and Explaning how to put the kit together!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
I love mine !! Its definitely a major upgrade from the ol Alice.. :D
