    Kwarteng met bankers and hedge fund managers a few days before the budget for a champagne party, then comes the budget Kwarteng abolishes the cap on banker’s bonuses, then the pound plunges and those same bankers made millions betting against the pound. The police should investigate!

      you realise that just because there was a cap in bankers bonus didnt mean they were not getting bonuses above and beyond that cap.. the cap was pure cash terms only.

    I remember the 80's high interest rates, housing collapse, negative equity etc. The Truss mini budget is taking us all there. The hustings people voted for her for their own tax benefits. Its gone very wrong for Truss and the torys. A GE is required asap.

      That is so true and so often overlooked. There was only one version of ‘remain’ and multiple versions of ‘leave’. The ERG by cunning and luck ensured we got the absolute hardest of Brexits (cue exporters drowning in form filling, lorries backed up 25 miles on the M20, and every UK passport holder’s freedom of movement gone) It simply did not have to be this way and they could STILL have had their precious Brexit.

    Andrew Marr is a class act. He has had stints as a old school newspaper journalist and editor, an author on history with TV series attached, a weekly show and now freed of BBC constraints is rediscovering a candid voice. Do, when he talk about the internal dynamics and machinations of the Tory party, I sit up and listen. What frightens me is the effect on the country if the Truss govt were to implode. The markets may go haywire and only a Gen Election could offer a way through.

      I'm currently watch re-runs of 'Yes, Minister/ Yes, Prime Minister'..... and it seems as relevant today as it did 'then'. Just shows you, I think, that politics doesn't really change at all.

      The banks didn't want him and the Tory donors certainly didn't. He was not going to cut taxes, so all the wealthy out there would not get their pockets lined or massive bonuses.
      He is used to finances, you would think he was the best man for the job. This was 'rigged' and should be investigated thoroughly. Truss was near the bottom when the race was on for the next PM so ask yourselves how she got to where she was? It certainly wasn't her personality or brains now was it?
      As soon as it got down to her and Rishi (the fact that she was blatantly offering top jobs to her cronies) it was perfectly clear who the better person was for the job. Rishi had Loads more experience, definately more honesty. He was more popular to the public but he refused to make the wealthy, wealthier, so he had no chance.

      He created an unholy coalition that was fragile at best of English Nationalists (Red Wall) and the Brexit Ultra's absorbing the dregs of UKIP and taking the Blue wall for granted.
      He lied to all parties in the coalition keeping its head just above water, people forget before his demise there was a long string of by election failure where the Blue wall was being eaten by the Lib-Dems

If there is another leadership contest and his name is on the ballot the current projection is that he'd win as 70% (ish) of Tory members would prefer if he was still party leader.

    So glad to see Andrew Marr, I miss the Sunday show which I use to learn and loved watching . We have nothing like this in Australia where I am at the moment. I am saddened by what is going on in the UK. However we need to kick the current government and get back UK’s current state of Affairs, we hold a very strong position in the world and we can recover but it needs to be done fast . We need a very strong , intelligent leader not a ruthless leader but an intelligent who know and understands what UK needs to get back on It’s feet . Come people do not stand for this . My country , my home .

    Brexit, for truss and her colleagues, was about building Singapore on the Thames. It was sold to the public as saving 350 million a week for the nhs. We haven't got the latter and it appears the public do not like the consequences of the former.

      This is a bad take - the parliamentary party decided upon two bad candidates to send to the membership. The membership wouldn't have chosen either Truss or Sunak if they had an actual choice.
