- Figuring out the rear suspension for Samantha is no easy task. The goal is to keep it as low as possible and use long springs. The first step was to collect a bunch of leaf springs and that is what I did. I have four different styles laying around the shop and we are going to figure out what style is the best for this truck.

Between the podcast and these videos, I'm really enjoying how it feels to follow along on this build.
That's great to hear, I was curious if it might be to much. Im always balancing how much info needs to be talked about in each place... And some times I loose track.haha
Spring Under!
-more stable
-driveshaft better protected
-hangers are just as low as spring over
-no axle wrap
If you want more belly clearance runner larger tires. 👍🏾
Might happen 😉
Oh man this has me excited that you're using the slider boxes instead of shackles because I just bought them for my solid-axle Swap and really haven't seen much on them
Yeah I don't know much about them
Interesting. I like the Samantha vlog. Seems like spring under could get hung up on some things. I’d go spring over and run the first set of springs. It puts you at 25” but with weight on it you’ll end up perfect.
Yeah, I have thought about that... The springs are defintally lower but all in all there really isn't that much below the axle. I think it might be easier to go spring under and if I don't like it to than change to over, thoughts
spring under technically is better for suspension travel but it does take away ground clearance so its really whats more important to you
I love the idea of spring under with those tundra, Be different. All we do is copy each other on what we know works, but what don't know is the unknown and that could even be better I'm very interested to see it work if you did setup like that! if it works well I'm definitely changing my setup!. its like the something when you see Dirthead Dave run airbags lol who would think of that !
Cheers... Be different
Me personally, I’d run spring over with the 63s. Ground clearance is 👑! But do the spring under, and report back! I like those slider boxes, I wanna do some on my front axle!
I've only ever seen them for front axles. I'm curious how they will work on the rear
4 link for the win! If you want articulation that’s the way to go
$$$
Spring over..after running my yota buggy on 63s several yrs here in Oklahoma on some pretty knarly trails they work pretty good that way..just run two leafs in the pack front and back on 37s so it doesnt set to tall..Enjoy yals podcast and vidz!
What is the belly height on your buggy?
I will hav to measure it again this wkend when i get home...another thing is i narrowed the mounts for the leafs so they are tucked up into the frame and eye to eye its 29" wide which helps with flex..
@@jeremymonroe2039 -- that's a good idea... I want to drive this on the road though so I need some stability
Framerails set at 24" and tcase skid at 20..main thing that hangs up is the rear pumpkin..
Low CG
More stability
Awesome 👍👍
Bower the better?
Im spring under now on my Jeepster Commando...108" wheelbase. Im digging it alot. Mine ar on YJ springs with 40's. If you want more height for loading down the rig might need to go to a traditional rear shackle or small lift spring.
Yeah the weight factor is an unknown at this time. Only one way to find out... Finish it
I ran Stock 63 on a tg4 HD front n it sagged n settled bad in the back ended up going 2" block on top but my current rigs settin on 3 link front n 63 through frame not under n amazingly it'll top the 30 degree ramp on 35s
Awesome build, can't wait to see more!
-Maybe I missed it somewhere but if low CG is the goal, why is keeping the leafs in the rear the goal vs links?
prob cost and ease of install. i too am building a low ride height 4runner with full width axles and wanting to do spring under. Dont have the funds for coil overs etc leafs are just plain easy and ride ok for a daily driven.
My land cruiser is spring under. I wish I could offer advice but I bought it like that and I don’t crawl it. The few times I have done anything hard for me I have misjudged and end up slamming a rock into my U bolts under the axle. But I am an inexperienced off-roader.
I’d go Chevy 63s. I’ve heard/seen nothing but amazing things. Granted I don’t have personal use. Seems to be the best fit
They work great on Bobcat that's for sure
How did this turn out? im currently building a 95 4runner. about to put super duty full width axles under it and i want to keep it low. So i was going to do the spring under route as well. i have seen a couple of 4runners do it. theyre getting maybe 3-4 inch up travel but thats ok with me. mines a daily driver not a rock crawler. also how are the sliders working out? i wanted to use those as well.
Go spring under for anti axle wrap, spring over then you’ll need a Antiwrap bar. Go higher on belly and let weight settle it down. Low good but then more turtling lol
Yeah, I am sure these springs are well settled in, But there will be more weight for sure
Go spring under! My bronco is about 19” frame height with 37’s and it works.
YEAH! What is your Bronco's wheel base? Do you Rock Crawll it?
@@SnailTrail4x4 wheelbase is 104”. Oh yeah! it’s been through the Rubicon, Moab, and everywhere out here in the east where I live.
I reckon it's going to be too low with the tundra springs spring under after you get the body and other stuff on. What year/drive/chassis tundra did you get those from? I have f150s and 2 in blocks on my long bed first gen and I've been looking for taller springs to get rid of the blocks.
I have spoken to the tundra owner and he said they are upgraded springs, I'm not sure who makes them, but they are arched more than stock
I wouldn’t be “afraid” of running spring under, definitely go with the longest main leaf pack (63” Chevy), run a u-bolt eliminator, and don’t weld the slider until you cycle the suspension with the pack disassembled. Also, all of your frame height measuring was worthless because you have ZERO weight on the frame, and for half of the measuring you did, you had the weight sitting on the red jack stands behind where the front axle sits. That made the engine be a giant counterweight and unload the rear suspension.
Spring under with U-Bolt eliminator? Wouldn't that have the bolt heads facing downwards and exposed to the rocks?
@@SnailTrail4x4 easier to protect bolt heads than the ends of u bolts. Unless you were planning on flipping the u-bolts and facing them up……
I vote spring over and set to 24-25 once loaded down should be around 21-22 and if to low easier to lift up higher.
What do you mean flip the hanger?
Spring under definitely. When’s the next Samantha video?
I've never had spring under, but if you like the height WTH. The thing that caught my eye was that there's only 2 leafs (if I'm wrong please correct me). I know she's a light truck, but I'd be worried about breakage.
You're correct, I only had two leafs for lightness while I'm fabing it up
You know, only the best dressed vehicles are sprung under. I've got it on excellent authority
Oh really?
Spring under would help with axle wrap but I personally would go spring over better flex and more clearance under axle
Why is there more flex with spring over? I have actually heard the oppsite
I think the reason most people associate flex with SOA is flatter springs. You can run an almost flat spring in most applications coming from SUA to SOA and gain 4-6” over stock height. Heavily arched 4-6” SUA lift springs generally flex less and ride like poo.
The decision you make is yours to make bud. It's your truck. Weigh the pros and cons of every single idea you have and create the best decision for your vehicle. Are you driving it on the road or is it offroad only? How far up the ladder are you looking to wheel? If its backroads it won't matter. Do you boss. We're all watching and I Have the same project going on.
I am planning on it being street legal and I hoping to have it be a badass wheeler but it's definitely not a buggy
Old school. 1 drive tran, supen, body 👁️ 👍🇺🇲🪓🪵💪🧨💥🔥
I think you are underestimating how much its going to sag with weight of truck on it. Probably in the neighbourhood of 3”
You think so? You think with a bed it would go down 3"
The cab weighs more than you think and still puts a fair bit of weight on rear axle. Plus fuel tank, exhaust, bumper, sliders, spare tire etc. it all adds up. I weighed my first gen ext. cab (tacoma) at more than 950 lbs without doors, hood, fenders.
@@kevinmtoyota -- dang, that's heavy... We lifted mine off the frame with 2 other guys, I know it weighs a fair amount
i like that your playing around and mocking these leaf springs, but i think if possible, mock it u with the full weight of the truck bed, cab, fenders, hood, full size spare, gas tank, gas in the tank, your easily missing 1,000 lbs of stuff but trying to mock it up. i know you want to get the rear suspension figured out before you do the 3 link but maybe you need to install a bunch of stuff to get a more realistic idea of which springs will work the best. then take back apart
What happened to this project?
guess 20 inches
When is the next update, my friend?
