  • Today we finish Samanthas Rear axle by installing the E-Locker. We are not installing the locker into an E-Locker housing, but we are retrofitting the Toyota mini truck axle housing to fit the E-Locker 3rd member.
    We are also installing Trail-Gear Chromoly axle shafts and a rear disk brake kit. I got most of the products from the Parts Counter on Irate4x4.com
    If you're not a member there you can get them off Amazon with the links below.

    Those collar lock bolts typically clear if you grind them so the hex is even with the v in the middle. Just put them in a drill and hit them on a bench grinder. For the welded bolt hole You can drill it oversize then tap it. Then use a grade 8 equivalent full-thread bolt from the inside. So all the threads in the housing are doing is holding the bolt from falling into the housing.

    Next time instead of paint transfer for bolt holes, look up “transfer punches”. Buy yourself a set and increase your accuracy. Also, instead of welding a puddle to drill and tap, weld a piece of plate in that spot, so you are drilling and tapping layers of mild steel instead of hardened weld. Good job overall, can’t wait to see Samantha take shape!

      Thanks, I'll look into the Transfer Punches 🤔 wonder if GEARWRENCH has them?
      In reguards to weldig plate onto the housing... The area was so small the weld would have distroyed the plate. It was maybe only a size of half of a dime that I needed. I need to find a good solution, because I have to do it again for the front axle

    Sir u should tap the unweld holes first than the last tap will be the welded hole

    you can just use the gasket for an e-locker 3rd as a template to modify the housing.

    • @SnailTrail4x4
      @SnailTrail4x4  Před 2 lety +1

      If I had one at the time I would have done that. I now have one and will do that for the front axle

      @@SnailTrail4x4 Make sure the gasket is on the correct way before drilling. The gasket is directional. It will go over the original studs either way, but not the new studs. I learned that the hard way.

    Do the stock ifs minitruck axle splines mate up with the e-locker splines? Also, is the driver side splines deep enough for the e-locker to slide side to side (engage-disengage)

    • @SnailTrail4x4
      @SnailTrail4x4  Před 2 lety +1

      I would look at an Eton E-Locker. I guess they are all contained into the 3rd member and you dont have to modify the housing. That or you go with a mechanical version

  • @pippinpup650M
    @pippinpup650M Před 2 lety +1

    Had been building up an identical set up. Do you think it’s worth finding the Tacoma rear end to run the E locker? Avoid some of that thread alignment issue? What brakes did you put on?

    • @SnailTrail4x4
      @SnailTrail4x4  Před 2 lety +2

      The alignment was a pain. What front end set up are you doing? I now wish I went with a tacoma rear axle becasue it its wider and I want the width. Also something to think about, if you dont have the E-locker already is a Eton E-Locker... I guess it fits inside the 3rd member and no housing modifactions needed

      @@SnailTrail4x4 Started with 85 front and 88 rear when I found the E locker with the proper gearing. The mods weren’t as seamless as I had anticipated. Tacoma rear end can be found for a couple hundred bucks sometimes. Looking now if the holes would still line up on the non-E locker version. Hoping it’s just a notch I would have to make

      @@pippinpup650M -- You're still going to have to make additional holes for the e-locker. It's a different bolt pattern than a standard third member. If you're lucky you can find a e-locker housing.

    I can appreciate your tenacity but you might want to do a little more research before taking on projects like this. The amount of effort your expending on this project is way more than you should. Almost like you’re doing all the steps in reverse order.
