  • The award-winning band The New York Times called “the greatest trio on earth” perform live in the Utzon Room, performing their singular mix of avant rock, jazz and ambient music in a unique single-take performance.
'In Session' is a series of intimate, long-form music films, staged behind closed doors. In taking a highly stylised filmic approach, 'In Session' goes beyond the confines of a traditional performance film, giving audiences an entirely unique and close-up perspective on their favourite artists.
    Recorded 8th February 2022
    Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House
With Chris Abrahams, Tony Buck, Lloyd Swanton
    Creative Direction by Subversus
    Cinematography by Brad Jarrett
    Post Production by Vs. Studio
    Edited by Sean McDermott
    Audio Mix by Tim Whitten

The beautiful video footage seems to be taken from a film by Wong Kar-wai, everything takes place with slow and hypnotic tempos - magnificent music and video

To start at nothing-silence, and then to arrive 40 minutes later at a sonic destination unplanned; what a gift this band is. I try to forget comparisons to other music I listen to when I hear them. THIS is THEIR sound, not someone else's sound. I love them. Thank you for posting this!!!!

They've been influenced by every artist they've heard (and those that they've heard have heard) and will influence those that ever hear them (and those that ever hear them hear). Unless you're trying to emulate something, you'll be in the same territory as the necks

How I've missed The Necks and their taxi service to transcendence since the start of the Great Unpleasantness. Hope there'll be a gig at Cafe Oto soon

Really, about as far away from contrived formulaic contemporary pop music as one could possibly get. Behold the magic of these heads and hands.

There’s something of the masochist in me I think, in that I come back to see the Necks hoping that one day I’ll manage to stay awake throughout the whole of their performance. Seen ‘em twice live and still not made it through to the bit where they become interesting.

With all due respect to the Necks with whom I have no quarrel the comment made by The New York Times is the most ignorant and unqualified comment I have ever heard. When they make such ridiculous statements it simply reflects poorly
on their lack of musical knowledge and experience. More than likely it was made by some young pup barely out of diapers
and who has not yet experienced the vast library of music that is out there for all of us to consume.
What would the juveniles at the New York Times have to say about these FOUR albums for your pleasure.
