- The biggest change by far for us in 2019 was finding a franchise outside of Nintendo to talk about on my channel. Let's open the New Year right by talking about some messed up censors, bans, and hilarious localizations from Yu-Gi-Oh!

okay, so how bad- oh. That WAS the flavor text.
As someone who plays Mekk-knights. I am kinda pissed that they left out an piece of Lore of the World legacy cards. Which is huge and expansive, basically an RPG plotline.
there are other inter-archetype stories told through yugioh cards but the world chalice story is my favorite cause I've literally been there to watch it since the world chalice cards came out in 2017-then krawlers, and mekk-knights, and the various extra deck evolutions of those cards which were all normal monsters, to orcusts which are basically the final battle of the story. Would be cool of there was one more piece to the story with another archetype, but I think it's pretty complete. I've read on the yugioh wiki the only explanation I could think of for this change. Since konami likes to reference their own properties in yugioh cards, Avram might be saying this because he bears a passing resemblance to Pit of kid icarus fame, who allegedly uses that as a catchphrase. But it's such a tangential connection, and such an awful change considering how important that bit if flavor text is to cluing people in on Avram's role.
Reminds me of when they changed the card names too "That Wacky Magic" and "Magical Something"
@@SakuraAvalon or how any and all cards with "-roid" at the end of the name is considered a Vehicroid monster.
This includes a monster named Dark Jeroid. Which isn't supposed to be a Vehicroid but is considered one because of the "-roid" suffix.
Best one is this old card that searches out one of the Guardian Monster's(Elma, Eatos, etc), but had an 'except Celtic Guardian, Winged Dragon Guardian of the Fortress' and others. Eventually they had to change how they cut them out.

The cards were insanely out of date. Besides Alligator Sword, they were only added to finally put them in the TCG. I imagine the Joey dialogue was to make them fit, and to give people a reason to be happy pulling them.

I’m going to take a stab and say that the boobed version was the original, but the flat chest version was used for the international. While the boobed version was kept for the Japan release the year later. That’s the only way it makes sense to me.
After all these years, it's still amazes me on how much censorship is in the Yugioh franchise.
And in most cases, I laugh.

To be fair though, Yugioh was for pretty young kids... and Japan is willing to show different things to kids than in the West... btw, some Japanese people thought that Detective Pikachu might be a Pokemon movie for adults.... so culture values are different.
But, I like the fact that even when they censored it, they did a good job and still made the cards great art pieces. It's still worth keeping.
Yeah, I stopped watching the franchise after 5D's after how badly that series in particular was butchered.

Not really "pretty young kids", the target demographic is 12+. Pokemon is aimed at a slightly younger one, 6-7+ I believe so it makes a bit more sense there.
The big thing is that a lot of the localization was handled by 4Kids, which was known for making bizarre changes, to the point they obviously were going above and beyond what was necessary.
If you think YuGiOh's is weird, you should see their work in One Piece.

It's "Check THIS out!" with the emphasis on the "THIS".
Getting the point across with as few words as necessary is a great writing skill.
In this case it's about how Avram has really cool weapons now. You can leave the rest to your imagination.
What irks me the most is that Mekk-Knight Avram depicts such a heartfelt moment in the World Chalice storyline. It's a nice, Xenoblade-esque story of a boy and his companions trying to save the world, with awesome artwork to back it up. The original text alludes to the symbolic origins of Avram weapon and foreshadows the trials he will face in the future, and it shamefully got left out of one of the ONLY flavor texts released in 2018.
I think that's the entire effect for Chosen by the World Chalice, Auram The World Chalice Blade Master, Mekk-Knight Avram, Crusdaia Maximus and Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avram.
I know I annoyingly spew out that phrase anytime I summon out any Avram or Auram duel monster.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not a YuGiOh guy. I never grew up watching it or playing the card game, I was too busy doing the same with Pokemon. That said, every video from this year has been pretty great. I've been here for a while now, and this is by far the best year I've seen on this channel. Thanks for a great 2019 Jwittz, and here's to a great 2020

The only place its remotely close to being "dead" is in the west, its still fairly popular in Japan.

I read the yugioh manga first so i was kinda jumpscared thanks to it not being censored there.

Dude! Her hand's on backwards too! Look at Tragedy's artwork closer, the knob on the wrist, is usually seen at the top, when you're looking at the back of your hand. The camera shouldn't be able to see that knob and the palm of her had at the same time.

I saw a fan comic with Aang and Katara meeting Chris Hansen. It's pretty funny.
The international version of the Cure Master actually saved us from that nightmare illustration.
Definitely that would have been unpleasant they really made the right move with that one

This needs to be the Yugioh equivalent of your Pokédex entry series. The GX episode where they changed alcohol to hot sauce needs to be in the next one.
You also should do more digging into the manga, particularly the story of how Seto Kaiba got his three Blue-Eyes White Dragons and Death-T. I also suggest looking into Yugioh R.
I might have been razed as a way to innocent kid becuase I had never made the connection between the hot sause and alcohol until someone literally explained that's what it was 😂

Honestly, whenever our TCG exclusives get imported to Japan and they change the art, I swear I can hear Kazuki Takahashi laughing at us from his prison cell in Konami HQ.
Rai-Mei wasn't the only one. The other one that comes to mind is Alich, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. That card was a TCG-Exclusive as well. She got her chest plate (from the international version) swapped for one that shows her underboob. My mind was blown away when I saw this, because it made me realize that Konami must already have both international and "Japanese" artworks regardless of release date.

The case with the "reverse censorship" more likely seems like the original design was the Japanese artwork but the Japanese print release would've been after the international due to something like behind-closed-doors deals between the TCG and OCG regarding exclusive release timings.

The "hot sauce" episode of Yugioh GX is a gold mine of censorship and wacky localizing. Sure, 4kids, that tiger is stumbling about because he's dizzy.

Of course those two adults are just drinking cups of hot sauce, and we totally gave a cat a saucer of hot sauce. Nothing bad about that.

I have a feeling that the Japanese Raimei art was the original, but a weird scheduling thing occurred, causing the altered art to be released first.
I’m surprised Josh didn’t go for the dubbed release having had the peculiar censoring of Yugi’s mother from existing outside of a single scene.
I'm actually really glad you dipped your toe into yugioh! My parents got me a dvd box set for Christmas and I'm a pokemon fan lol but now I'm glad to try getting more into the series more than I did as a kid. Keep rapping and keep making great content! 🙏🏿

First video I watch in 2020. Having spent the last 4 weeks rewatching all of Digimon season 1 and (currently) 2/3 of season 2, looking forward to rewatch Adventure Tri to Hype up for Last Evolution Kizuna, I for one will definatly stick around for any Digimon related content you might put out.

I would love to see more of these from the 4kids era. As someone who is reading though ultimate muscle and seeing ALL the differences it would be cool to see you do more of these differences be it just for Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon or anything.
Ending the year off with a Yugioh video is great. My favorite franchise besides Pokemon and I'll gladly welcome more in 2020!

Also freaking Harpie Girl was initially uncensored in TCG. But it was very quickly censored.

Beyond excited for some potential Digimon content. Digimon was a staple for me growing up, and I have memories of willingly waking up at 6 am on Saturdays to watch the new episodes of 02.

My best guess about Watt Cancel is that they didn’t want people to be confused. It’s a card that goes with a Watt deck, yet it shows an Ojama on the artwork

I feel like maybe it has something to do with the eye sockets in the skull, since Ojama Yellow doesn't actually have eyes there.
They might've changed it just because it didn't make sense or because they didn't want people making conspiracy theories or creepypasta about it.
Still doesn't make much sense to me, but that's the best I can think of.

Funny I'm actually going to start binging the original Yu-Gi-Oh show on Netflix. Your recent videos made me want to rewatch it since I haven't seen the show in YEARS and I don't remember how many episodes I watched but I missed a lot of them so I can't wait to finally watch them.
