    Yu-Gi-Oh! has a TON of spin-offs, but for some reason the very first spin-off seems to be talked about the least. In today's video, I read through the somewhat forgotten Yu-Gi-Oh! R Manga.

    Weirdly, Joey winning a duel by psyching an opponent out actually IS character development for him. His biggest losses (off the top of my head Vs. Yugi in Duelist Kingdom and Vs. Marik in Battle City) are because he gets intimidated into not pressing the advantage when he has it. Him taunting an opponent into a misplay is... genuinely, him learning from his own failures.

    Fun facts:
    1. The story of R was created by Takahashi himself way before as it was intended to be part of the original manga, but it ended up being cut.
    2. In chapter 14, Kaiba proposes the idea of creating a facility to train duelists, a direct reference to Duel Academia in GX.
    3. The only time Yugi/Atem tries to use Ra in manga continuity is in Yugioh R, although the summon was negated (in the original manga he only summons Ra so that he can crate Horakhty, not to use Ra itself. He did use it to destroy Diabound in the memory world, however Yami Bakura rewound time so it never happened.)

    • @jimmysanders505
      @jimmysanders505 Před 3 lety +12

      Another fun fact is that after Yugi's duel with #2, Atem says that Yugi is possibly the only one who can defeat him...alluding to the ceremonial duel. (which was better in the anime) I haven't read the actual manga ceremonial duel in a while, but the other weird part about this is that it gives Atem an idea of how Yugi's deck is going to look and how he's going to duel when they face off. I don't think he had that knowledge in the anime, which was a benefit for Yugi.

      @@jimmysanders505 After the Duel at pier in Battle City when everyone was leaving, Yami Yugi stated if one person could beat him then its Yugi. When Yami Yugi was about to build his deck to face Yugi, Yugi, who has not once acted in such a way before in the entire manga, cockily stated that he knew all of Atem's moves. This ruined the Duel because you now know BS is going to happen. And it did. Takahashi had to force Atem to lose during moments he could have won. The turn Atem summoned Obelisk, Takahashi could have made Atem summon Ra instead to win on that turn because Yugi had no cards to defend. Instead of dealing 4000+ dmg to Yugi with Ra, Yugi takes 1000 dmg with Obelisk's atk. The other moment was the penultimate turn when Takahashi made Atem draw multiple cards and he did nothing with them to bank everything on Osiris. Atem had won his games mainly with using Magic and Traps to create a win, but this time he was relying on "power" (high atk) to win the game.
      Also, Takahashi came up with the setting. Itou was the one to do the rest so its pointless to connect it to the main manga. R released after the manga ended, so it takes into account the reader read the manga, which is why it references the final duel and has Yami Yugi summon The Tricky, for example. We don't know how it would play out by Takahashi if it was in the original manga. It doesn't give an idea to Atem on what Yugi's deck looks like. Also also, the anime is irrelevant. It's an adaptation of the manga following it from point A to point B while changing things in-between. Yami Yugi in the anime doesn't know what Yugi plays like just like in the manga it is adapting.

It doesn’t really enrich the original story at all, but it has some really awesome monster designs and artwork, plus it introduces some new perspectives on older characters like Bandit Keith and Pegasus, even if those details are kind of weird. In that way, it’s a lot like those previously mentioned filler stories in the anime: there are some interesting (if not always well executed) lore details and cool visuals, but it just doesn’t add anything substantial to the story or characters. If you can look past the fact that the plot is a bit repetitive and nonsensical, then I’d say give it a shot! If you need a refresher on the “perfected” thing, basically Gekko was a prodigy and the best duelist under Pegasus’ wing for a time but both Pegasus and Gekko himself realized that he peaked way early, so he’s “perfected” in that there’s basically no more going up for him. Meanwhile Yakko and the top two Duel Professors, who took way longer to get their dueling acts together have each demonstrably surpassed Gekko and still have some growth to spare.

    First, how do you know yugi killed pegasus?
    Second, why a teenage girl? Even mokuba makes more sense
    Third, why in the name of the heart of the cards would you revive bandit keith, a known cheater who tried to threaten pegasus? Also, how did you revive him so fast before pegasus? Did it require less energy or something?
    Another thing, why didn't they revive pegasus? If this tech works as advertised, dueling can effectively make you immortal, and pegasus wasn't all that bad if you really boil it down, so you basically let him stay murdered

    I had no idea this existed till now. I have the beast machine card, but I never knew which Yu-Gi-Oh! it came from! This answered my question on where certain cards came from, thank you!
