    Physical limitations, I so knew I was the best example of that for you🤣😂🤣. So more explanation about what Alison is referring to in my limitation and my neck problem that stopped me playing since 2019. I would get a bit dizzy after playing for few minutes only. I had tried numerous time to get back to it over the years but always had to stop again after about a month. Once I was diagnose (early summer 22) with osteoarthritis and 2 herniated disc, I was able to adjust my playing position.
    I had used a shoulder rest for most of the 6 and a half years Alison taught me violin through Skype lesson (even tried out the wolf shoulder rest in this video and didn't liked it and sent it back to Alison). Not more that a month ago I discovered that part of my solution was to get rid of the shoulder rest and just use a triangle shape foam hold with elastic the prevent the violin to slip. That has basically solved my problem for now if I keep my head looking strait forward (sill need to make a better version of my improvised solution since it has a tendency to fall off🤣). I'm now hopeful to play normal speed Neapolitan song from Alison Duet book. (I'm still at 80% speed due to lack of practice lately but have masted the way you told me to play you know what part 😎 (I know it's cryptic to every body but that little bit is meant for Alison 😇)
    And since I have broken the tip of my expensive bow Alison got me😱 you may have in the future an updated version of the ''How to buy a bow'' video 😂🤣😂(see I'm stile very useful)
    And for those of you who are still not sure about buying Alison book just do they are awesome. I started with the 10 free lesson and I'm now at book 3 level and currently using Duet song book (Neapolitan song being the 1st song of the book)
    What are you waiting for go get"em!

      Lol, Caty, yes you were and still are very useful and invaluable to me! Thank you for the insight - i wasn't too sure on the details myself, so I thought it best to let you explain to everyone as it might help someone in a similar situation!
      And excellent book plug haha:

    You are the first online tutor I have watched who has discussed these issues, thank you. I fractured my left wrist over 30 years ago and now at 70 I am concerned that I might develop carpal tunnel syndrome so I wear a wrist support whilst practicing and so far (learning for 3 months) it seems OK. The only pain I am currently getting is in my right side (the bow must be too heavy for me 🤔). During my practice (usually over 1 hour excluding breaks) I stop for a 5 minute break, after every 20 minutes, which allows my frustration and my finger tips to calm down 😀

    Thank you for adding this video! I am an active human in my early 40s with a pre-existing chronic neck pain issue that has been addressed with multiple physical therapy and chiropractor sessions. When my neck is bothering me, it certainly impacts my violin practice, but I am happy that my violin practice does not seem to be causing any neck pain issues. I have always used a shoulder rest and it helps for me to minimize the movement necessary in the neck and shoulder to properly hold the instrument. I also have noted others in the local violin shop comment on the heavy weight of my instrument compared to a typical violin, but I am happy with the sound and playability, and it's still the lightest instrument I play (clarinet and piano, even with a keyboard I'm glad I don't have to support its weight to play). I have noted a significant difference in the weight of my primary bow compared to two heavier available alternates I inherited along with a 7/8 size instrument. Funny how so much variability can exist in a single instrument.

    Hello Allison i have enjoyed watching your videos and have finally taken the plunge and ordered a fiddlerman symphony outfit with 2 star pernambuco bow, i have played guitar for 50 plus years but have always wanted to learn violin and how to read music. I cant wait to start your free lessons when my violin arrives. Thank you for relighting my musical fire :)

    Shoulder rest is absolute must! The one will not necessary get back and neck problems while aging, but one will surely get them if the posture is incorrect. And the shoulder rest and chin rest are there to help to avoid all possible future problems with back and neck.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před rokem

      I couldn't disagree more. Ive never used a shoulder rest and have been happily playing for around 36 years with no issues. Itzhak Perlman and Anne Sophie Mutter for example are 2 of the worlds best violinists ever, and neither of those use shoulder rests either.
      As long as you are holding the violin correctly which I advocate in almost every single video of mine, you'll never encounter an issue.
      If you prefer to play with one as you feel its more comfortable, then I advise people to use one, but it is incorrect to say that using a shoulder rest is an absolute must as it is not.

    Good video. I'm going on 40, have signs of carpal tunnel and shoulder issues from years of physical labor. I'm at the point of starting to attempt vibrato, any suggestions for approach considering my physical limitations? I was thinking more arm and less wrist.

    always helpful information. I'm ancient and after 20 minutes or so my arms, neck, etc. have too much pain and I have to stop. But it sounds like a few short sessions a day could be the solution. thank you again. btw - Ms.Sparrow, I've done a lot of professional and amateur photography and here's a tip for a more polished video frame: Don't have your head in the middle of the frame - half the shot is of the blank wall above you. aim it down so your head is about a quarter of the frame from the top. (respectfully suggested with luv)

    I learnt violin in my youth, but gave up & then came back to it. The biggest problem I have is my Left hand little finger broke years ago and no longer bends properly, it’s practically impossible for me to use it, so I have to either really stretch my ring finger or shift to second position. It is annoying but at least I can still play.

    Hi Alison, old codger here. On gypsey firelighters, coming on well after 4 weeks. Started ord to joy this week. Been.playing since November 23. My left hand aches around the crutch of the phumb after only playing about 10 minutes. Any ideas, or is this normal considering where I am.

      Can be normal, but you may need to adjust your grip a little as you may just be gripping too tight.

    I'm a guitar and bass player for 32 years. I have learned to play violin bass in high school and played for 4 years in the school orchestra.. I find that the violin is quite easy... but what I'm having trouble with is the vibrato... I keep bending the strings like a guitar and I'm having trouble getting my mind to play vibrato in the correct way 😂

    • @zeniktorres4320
      @zeniktorres4320 Před 11 měsíci

      Keep at it. I'm over 55 and I also had trouble with vibrato. The small muscles required for effective and effortless vibrato have laid dormant for decades. It's taken me untold amounts of persistence over 4 years and spent loads of time on it as, aside from intonation and tone, it is the most important for me. One thing I can say for sure, is that never one teacher had provided the sole solution for me. I had to take multiple approaches and combine them with my own common sense knowledge to get progress. Seek different viewpoints. Older adults cannot learn the same way an 8 year old does.

      @@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thank you so much for responding and for the links! But it's not saying very much about the head - what I basically would like to know is if the jawline is holding the violin by the ear? Does it make sence? Like I switch between having the back of the jawline on or off the violin. If its off the violin my chin is the holding part.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The head isnt the issue. The head will turn where it needs to be to see the music. The concern and main issue is where the violin sits on the shoulder in relation to the actual body - which is around 11 O'Clock lets say. You head will then move where you want it too - usually looking at the music.
      So for example, I will play whilst why head turns to look at the music, then in the next breath, my head has turned to look entirely at the violin.
      The head isnt holding or clamping the violin as such, so just allow it to be free - as long as the violin is correctly placed in relation to the body.
