  • In the midst of a global mental health crisis, millions of people have turned to mindfulness. But does it actually make us happier and healthier? In a world-first experiment, award-winning journalist Shannon Harvey recruited a team of scientists to put mindful meditation to the test. But after a 30,000 kilometre journey from the bright lights of Manhattan to the dusty refugee camps of the Middle East, what began as a self-experiment, transformed into a life-changing experience. In this talk, Shannon reveals the surprising conclusions of her year-long experiment to a group of young people who are facing radically different challenges to anything experienced by previous generations. In a world facing rapid technological disruption, increasing political polarisation and climate change, half of all mental disorders start by 14 years of age. At a time when the mental well-being of young people is looking grim, could mindfulness training be the simple life skill that changes everything?

Simple, available, doable, effective. Simultaneously quieting excessive mental activity allows for a more peaceful ground of being to non-dogmatically establish and grow into a greater, wiser identity of agency, responsibility and compassion. Mindfulness - a practice for advancing humankind to a greater wellness than it has ever known before.

As someone with an overactive monkey mind and sufferer of depression and anxiety, I know that short stints of daily guided meditation work well for me. Unfortunately I don’t stick to the routine - when I feel better, I tend to let the routine go. This video is an excellent prompt for me to get back into that routine. There are many free apps available.

Thank you Shannon for all you do. It's great that we're getting better at communicating how mindfulness meditation might equate to physical health activities. I would say the 8 week MBSR/MBCT courses equate to Couch to 5k, the 10 day silent retreats to running a marathon and many of the popular apps being equivalent to a walk in the park. Fingers crossed we're all getting a bit fitter one way or another :)

If only this was taught in schools starting at kindy imagine how awesome to give kids tools to help them with self resilience to deal with life and each other in a positive way.
