  • How to straighten a spindle for hand drill? Regardless if it’s for a spindle or an arrow shaft people have used fire to straighten sticks for thousands of years. This primitive technique is easy and very effective. Heating up the stick causes the sap to steam, softening the fibres of the wood allowing you to get a desired shape, this process is not only used to straighten but also to get desired shapes. A technique widely used by the Busmen to straighten arrow shafts before shaping and sanding them with primitive tools like flint sandstone or leather with sand.
It’s not guaranteed to find straight pieces of saplings to use has a spindle so this process allows you to gather the material and shape it do that in future you have a good straight spindle and you can encourage the drying process of your spindle next to the fire too.
It is important to ensure that these primitive skills get passed on do that the knowledge is not lost.
