As someone who has lost much of their hearing (due to cruel circumstance (a virus of all things)) and has a lot of hifi equipment I can really relate to re-learning how to appreciate music. I am not delighted with the situation but after 3 years I have finally got to the point where I can sometimes enjoy music again.
@@stringtheorymedia Unfortunately I was about 48 when this happened so this method is likely realistically not possible. I did look to get one but in the UK I could not find one. I can still hear though so that would likely also impact how effective this could be. My hearing is at the level where I have been offered hearing aids but I don't 'need' them. When I talk to people one on one I am okay. If there is any noise such as TV or air-conditioning I have to guess about 50% of words. I can never go out for a meal because I can only hear maybe 10% of words at best. I also have reverse slope hearing loss so anything below about 200hz is gone - that completely kills so many music genres. So that is where I am at. This has been more devastating for me than some hence my delay to answer...I wasn't even sure I could answer.

@@markphillips1509 Mark, I very much relate to your sentiments. 11 years ago when I was 30, I woke up one day with bad vertigo and terrible tinnitus in my right ear. Despite several courses of steroids and antivirals, I was left with a very steep roll off above 200 Hz. (At 90 db my word recognition score is under 30 percent, so it’s not correctable with a hearing aid). Worse than the deafness is the the tinnitus - as you mentioned, restaurants are impossible - the louder the ambient noise, the louder the tinnitus. I have been a semi professional musician my entire life and an amateur recording engineer and producer for most of it as well. My older brother is a hard core audio file - which is how I saw this piece. There are some promising treatments and regenerative medicine, but that’s still a few years away. If I have one regret, that I did not seek talk therapy Sooner, as the reality is that you are likely dealing with a major loss and grief issues, and for me, that impacted my personal relationships on ways I was not aware of at the time.
Truly hearing someone's soul expressed as beautiful noise requires grace and suspension of any form of judgement in order to hear. Too many people just listen.

Honestly, someone who is connected in these fields put this up for a sundance award or an oscar in the documentary catagory as this beautiful, sensitive and moving short film should be watched by a much wider audience than simply the audiophile community! For it is about humanity, about the power of the human spirit overcoming huge obstacles and about the threads of truth, beauty and emotion that connect us all wether we know someone personally or are simply touched by the gift they pass on to others, Thank you, this was incredibly moving and what the world needs to learn from at this point in history.

As a music lover and father of an extraordinary daughter born profound deaf this video felt really heartwarming. She’s only 4, but you can already tell she enjoys music through her cochlear implants. I will definitely try the balloon to have her listen to music

Hardships and trials in life cause us to appreciate life on a different level. Hardships help us to be thankful. I have a soft spot for the dis-advantaged in our communities but you Bob are more capable than I am, maybe I am the one who is dis-advantaged for being ungrateful, unthankful and too self-absorbed. I will listen to music with a different mindset after watching this interview. I sat quietly and listened to every word in this interview and was moved by his humility. Totally blown away. Cried even.... I know how Bob feels about music, I share that emotion - it comes from and touches the soul - thats a given, but to learn the mechanics of hearing and watch how he listens is so exciting. The body is an amazing thing and putting a few dots together (deaf children learning to run around the playground using a kind of sonar to know when they are close to something) there is a hidden world that belongs to the deaf and one that intrigues me. Science mixed with pure emotion in this story. Stunning work and congratulations to Christopher Bell.

All of your comments are so inspiring to me! the listening room is a garage conversion built using principles from Master Handbook on Acoustics and Bob Harley's writeup about ASC Room Build tools. Great sounding space but a few more tweaks....the goal is even frequency response at all sound levels at the listening seat, a tough feat with a balloon.
@@robertlichtenberg3739 I am also a record nerd. I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease about 10 years ago, after suddenly losing 95% of my hearing in my right ear. All I hear in that ear is a constant ringing, coupled with what can be best described as whooshing sound. My biggest fear is losing my hearing in my left ear, which is already diminished from years of DJing. Anyway, you, sir, are an inspiration, and since you like psychedelic rock, I highly recommend checking the eponymous first release from a new band from Spain called Magick Brother and Mystic Sister. You'll think you're back in '67. Also, The Holy Trinity, a trio from Moscow, are amazing. You might like them, they remind me of Coven at times. Thank you for sharing your story!
@@thislazylife thanks. Am always trying to get leads on new music. I had tinnitus as a child but fortunately it only lasted a few years. Sudafed makes it recur. I am sorry u have it. I keep the volume ar 80-85 dB with the balloon, but it has to go close to 95-100 to hear up to mid bass and lower midrange without the balloon. In a way, the balloon is safer than hearing aids.

So touching and moving. As a lifelong music lover and audiophile the thought of losing my hearing is terrifying to me for many reasons. I've suffered from tinnitus from a young age (firecrackers, stadium rock concerts and carpentry) and I know that as I age my hearing will continue to get worse. I'm so inspired by this man and what he is capable of overcoming and doing. Humans can be so resilient and profound and this gentleman is certainly in that group of few. Peace.

Makes sense. I remember sitting in stores where they had these leather sofas that would absorb the sound waves, it really made the experience a lot better so your entire body could feel the music.
When in the womb, fetuses experience sound as vibrations about 7 weeks before the ear canal opens, so the mapping of frequency and loudness is in the beginning a tactile one. That forms my theory of how tactile listening is related to hearing sound; both are vibration activated. The Pacinian corpuscles in the dermis is the equivalent of the cilia in the cochlea, almost down to the sodium ion filled cavities of both.
Really an hearth touching experience, this guy is by far more near the Music than most of all audiophiles all around the world. I have a great respect and really admire him.
