The name "Kill Team" is the only thing this new game shares with the old game. It's exciting! Who wouldn't want well regarded modern game design principles applied to the 40K universe and models? Roll on KT21!

Exactly, this is finally moving into modern skirmish design. KT18 was a good start but now they can throw off the shackles of the 40k stat blocks and create an actual skirmish game, not half a skirmish game.
And using lore as a rule guide post is insane, nothing in this game makes sense with lore because lore changes all the time. Space Marines shouldn't be invincible to melee because that doesn't make a game, that's just dumb.

What I'm really hoping is that GW is actually using this Kill Team as a way to "trial" substantial mechanical changes/improvements for 40k proper. It's obvious that the designers of this new Kill Team are incorporating improvements seen in other modern skirmish games, and finally dropping the shackles of the 40k rule set, which is really showing it's age now. If this Kill Team is popular enough, then maybe GW can use it as a proof of concept (and trojan horse) for introducing more modern design elements into core 40k.

I'm very intrigued by this new edition. I recently got into Underworlds and the critical defense thing came from there. It sounds like they took some Warcry, some 40K, some Kill Team, some Underworlds, and mixed in a little Warmachine/Hordes and threw it all in a blender and came out with this new ruleset. And that isn't a bad thing. I've long wished for a card-based 40K system where a model's stats are all on one card that's easy to reference instead of books and charts. Alternating activations...yes please...this sounds a bit like WM/H activations to me...and that works for me.
The hardest thing is going to be changing players away from "points". Most games I've tried that did away with points in favor of some other system had people begging and pleading for points until they just lost interest and the games died off...far too many people out there are so totally married to the idea of "points" that they will never be able to put it aside and any mention of a game not having "points" turns them off. I guess we will see how "balanced" GW has made the game going this new route and if people can divorce their brains from the idea of needing "points". I really hope it works.

I love this approach to comparative WS melee combat. It's far more visceral than what they had in past editions of regular 40k, with either the WS hit chart in 3rd-7th edition, or the combat score mechanic from 1st and 2nd edition... I kind of wish they could find a way to bring this into the current 40k ruleset.
On the matter of there being no armour save in melee combat, it's worth mentioning that of the datacards we've seen so far, operatives generally have either more dice, a better hit roll, or both, than their DF and SV. So when it really comes down to it, they generally have a better chance of avoiding hits in melee combat, than they do from ranged attacks, with the added benefit that if you end up rolling more hits than your opponent, you can deal damage to them. The flip side of this, is that there are weapons/operatives in the game that deal far more damage in melee than a lasgun can do with a ranged attack... but then again, there's plenty of ranged weapons better than a lasgun too.

I have the choice of sticking with Old KillTeam or playing a quicker, more streamlined game of New KillTeam. A bit salty that it seems I can’t make just any model a specialist or that it seems there is more emphasis on making sure your models are WYSIWYG… but we’ll get some clarification when the time comes (salty because the Ork KT box I got previously didn’t even give me all options for WYSIWYG - I needed to have other ork kits to make my KillTeam 100% WYSIWYG). I can see how it would suck for competitive players who have dialed in their strategy. But for those winning money at tournaments, I assume they have the means to ‘upgrade their game’, so to speak. Thanks for this video. I'm liking what I am hearing about this new Kill Team. It might be the right game to split with my brother-in-law, who I've got into Gaslands, and has expressed interest in the previous version. This version however, looks a far easier prospect. Alternating activations and a lack of weapon ranges is about time. The movement " sticks" or whatever, remind me a bit of the movement templates for Gadlands, another plus.
I just hope I have the dough when it shows up in my FLGS sometime next month!
Thanks again for you astounding psychic abilities....! And for your enthusiasm and tireless advocacy for this hobby!

My biggest concern right now is distribution and logistics. The supply of Dominion seemed sufficient to handle the demand load, but the Beast Snaggas set did not.
I fully understand that they are very different products; AoS has a smaller install base than 40K, and the Ork set is for a targeted subsection of the 40K demographic. Without seeing production numbers it's difficult to analyze these release events.
Who is Octarius for? New KT customers, old KT install base, old 40K install base? What's the ratio of AoS to Warcry players?
I'm not a big fan of feeding the FOMO, but it would be nice to know some numbers so I can gauge my concern and purchasing practices.

Warcry made me realize that I like to spend my time in skirmish games thinking about tactics instead of rules. Cutting the ties to 40K made it so that Kill Team can be the fast playing skirmish game I want instead of 40K light. Also, 9th edition 40K has made it so that you can play 40K light if you really want to without Kill Team.

I think Fire Teams are just sub factions to the overarching Army/Faction - they show Imperial Guard as having 2: Guardsmen & Tempestus Scions. So seems like it’s just a way of breaking up the Faction itself rather than having 1 giant list that so they can make rosters simpler to fill. ie 0-2 lots of 7 Guardsmen and/or 0-2 lots of Scions (2 Fire Teams total). Whereas the Warcry Hammer/Dagger/Shield was you chopping up your final list into personalised groups.

I'm excited to see what the new edition is like, but I'm nervous about two things:
They might not include my favorite units (vanguard veterans, Lictors, Allarus custodians, etc.)
They might lose the diversity that I know and love in certain factions right now. This could be a good thing and bring every faction closer to equal in power (which would be great!), but it could make lists too bland and standardized/oversimplified. It was fun when I would bring multi-damage weapons to smoke marines but then I'd be better off with single damage weapons against necrons. I sincerely hope we don't lose that list building complexity.

As a long time 40K player, I feel like you should get used to three year cycles for editions now. It's just the way of things in a publicly traded company. Profits will always come first and forcing your entire customer base to have to "re-up" every three years is what they're doing. The other option is to relegate games like Kill Team to the same fate as, say, Man O' War or Space Hulk and just sell the game periodically with no real support at all.
It used to be every five years, then every four. Now it's every three.

It's looking like you're only getting a certain amount of special weapon bearing stat blocks. This isn't new obviously, but it looks like the strike team system of locked model types example: guards take 2 strike teams so 14 models to a single marine kill team of assumably 3-5 models. We'll see. Either way it means we can get a crazy amount of indepth variety for stats if they want.
So like 2- 7 man guard teams with 3 special weapons a team versus 4 marines with possibly 2-4 power weapons among the elite units.

In power weapons like plasma may take a action to cool down before being shot agin or maybe bolt pistol
Would day for every attack option used with this weapon shoot twice
It’s interesting to see what operators with more point options can do compared to those in larger numbers with fewer
Like three guard all taking attack verse a marine with one attack but maybe marines may do certain actions twice
Who knows just rather exciting to see proper re-design.

  • @peppermintshore

From how I get it fire team are model limits for types. Using the example on the GW website Imperial Guards consists of two fire team types. Guard and Scions . The Guard are a 7 model fire team whi,e the scion could be 5 model fire team. Which means at the moment imperial Guard could bring a fire team of 10 (2 scion fire teams) 12 (1 scion team and 1 Guard team) or 14 (2 Guard teams)
Using this example space marines may have many fire teams as they have 12 model types. Heavy Intercessors could be a fire team of 3 while Infiltrators could be a fire team of 5 or 6. And as space marines only get 1 fire team it could be more limiting.
