  • What’s in this week?! Do you follow our socials? If so, you will have noticed a huge delivery of nearly 150 guitars from one collection! We don't have room in the December sale for all of them, so we have saved 100 for our March 2024 auction, with roughly 40 picked out for the December outing. Auctioneer and department head Luke Hobbs shows us what to expect....

    I'm facing this someday... I only have 57 guitars at this point,... some really great guitars,...some budget... some handmade... all really playable and well taken care of. But as we all know, we don't really own,...we are the stewards of these beautiful instruments.... and then when we pass on .... they get passed on. The best we can do is find really caring young people who will love and respect these guitars (and amps...)... and if I'm smart I'll do this while I'm alive.

      Good luck. I'm trying to sell 4 pretty nice ones locally at great prices and getting zero bites. I don't know how strong the market is now compared to 10-15 years ago. The world is flooded with guitars with hundreds (thousands?) more made each day.

    Never used to be a fan of relicing until I realised that when done well, it can make guitars very comfortable to play and removes the fear of dinging that nice, shiny new guitar.
    150 guitars in a 1 bedroom apartment is obviously necessary for effective soundproofing!

      I swing either way all the time. I’d prefer one naturally done, but some of the boutique ones are masterpieces and do add playing comfort when done well. I’d never do one myself and 99 out of 100 DIY jobs are bad! 😬 Thanks for watching! 😊

    About the Deusenberg...
    I’m from Europe (The Netherlands). Everybody here knows the Czech people have been great at building musical instruments for the last centuries. They built almost all of the stringed instruments used today still in classical orchestra’s.
    Their craft is beyond any there is. Bigger brands like Spector have a line of instruments crafted in the Czech Republic.
    Probably you could compare their quality with Japanese or Korean built instruments. So, way better than US Gibsons or Fenders, 😉.
    🖖

    • @GHguitarauctions
      @GHguitarauctions  Před 9 měsíci

      Agreed! We see a lot of old “Bohemian” instruments that form our classical instrument auctions. Many, many fine things. Korean instruments are also some of the best.
      I did an interesting “blind test” on one of our guitar team a few months ago. I handed him a Deusenberg “blind” and asked him where it was made. His reply by feel was Korea, which is where our comment on this comes from. I found it very interesting!
      Love the brand. Haven’t seen a bad one…. Yet…
      Thanks for watching! 😊

    An amazing collection.
    But: please be careful handling and cleaning the guitars and cases suffering from mould. That stuff is a health and safety hazard and should not just be wiped off, which will just launch the mould spores into the air. It needs specific treatment to kill it, I think diluted IMS, used in close conjunction with a vacuum cleaner. A conservator at your nearest large museum should be able to advise if you don’t have someone in-house.

    Lake Placid blue, is a color name by fender. It’s funny that Gibson and Fender generally use the same color palette but name the colors differently. Not a fan of relic’s, I think they over do it and look awful for the most part. I do like the satin and flat finishes that are coming out these days from various brands and builders.
    I never have seen the moving pickup model DA before, I’ve seen and played one of the clear acrylic body guitars.

      A few weeks while placed opposite to someone at a large table in a restaurant to someone I barely know, any worries about conversation were soon eased when he comes out with him knowing Johnny Mar from his business fitting “Smart homes” for the wealthy. Said he’s so down to earth and a keen runner. The mind blowing thing about him is how he literally had to make himself avoid using anything on the pentatonic blues scale for his work with Smiths? That’s the true definition of a guitar genius imo as someone who doesn’t follow anyone but his own thing. And of course he has some tasty vintage guitars that he’s acquired over the years

    I’ve had some really good buys from auctions over the years with guitars and still think it’s the way to go? Sold my Brook 12 fret custom Taw today and travelled all the way To Sheffield at Richer sounds after they gave me a reasonable offer. I would be interested to know if there is a difference between how a shop like Richer Sounds would operate on making a third say as they do tell you the price they would sell it for? Compared to that of a specialist guitar auction like Gardiner Hougate with working out the commission from something that would sell for £1800 say?

    • @andrewbowen6875
      @andrewbowen6875 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Have to say one more important thing imo having played so many different new and used Gibson Acoustics today in a shop, not one of them did it for me compared to the real good Gibson J35 I own. I would urge wherever possible for people buying at auction to get to the Auction room to try each guitar as it’s such a subjective thing. The Gibson’s showed here look like more special than the norm imo

    • @GHguitarauctions
      @GHguitarauctions  Před 9 měsíci +1

      We essentially give the client an estimate before hand and agree a reserve. As it’s an auction, we cannot give a firm sale price, but can give a good guesstimate. Sellers fees can be discussed on consignment, but the “standard” rate is 18% inc VAT. As you suggest, we alway advise buyer to try before you buy, although we also offer condition reports and give an honest appraisal of playability and sound. We’d rather a happy customer than one that bids blind and goes away disappointed 😊
