- I'm camping and fishing a small stream in Colorado with some crazy big fish. Decided to spend a few days truck bed camping in this spot over the July 4th holiday and explore a couple streams in the area. I head to Idaho next and spend nearly 3 weeks camping and fishing all over that wonderful state!
I'm living in my truck bed camper for 2 months and road tripping through New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. See the entire series on my channel or other parts below....
Check out the flies I used on this 2 month trip:

The numerous powerful big trout…that beautiful overcast afternoon in a gorgeous stream…then some rain…hurrying to the van where a cold beer is waiting for you…and if that wasn ˋt enough you could see a moose…Drew you ˋre living in Heaven!
Those were some quality fish Drew! I'm always amused when fishermen say to not bother with such small streams. They don't know what they're missing. Stepping in cow manure is just par for the course here in Wisconsin. Especially this time of year, when the weeds and brush along the stream banks make it almost impossible to fish anywhere except pasture streams. I also want to compliment you on the great job you do releasing your catch with minimal handling and time out of the water. Well done.
They truly don't and I'm in no hurry to educate them lol! Just doing my part to show it and hopefully help others see how to cnr fish!
You step in less without the shades. lol
Relaxation, Fish, Beer. Sounds like a good recipe for success! 😁Living the dream Drew! Beautiful country! Nice fish! As always you make it look so easy! Thanks for sharing!
I like the way you dip your hand in the water before handling the fish
Monday’s are now becoming my new favorite day when you post the next part of that fabulous trip. Had your hands full with a 3 wt. on a couple of those fish.
I did for sure! And it was an excellent time...heart rate was thumping for a few!
I love catching those browns. They do get large even in a small stream.
You live the life I’m working towards
Keep at it...worth it on so many levels!
I think this stream is my favorite one so far........I just like looking at it.....
One of mine also. Gotta love easy access with big fish...not very common!
You sir are livin! Fantastic, thanks for sharing the journey!
I'm a believer in chasing experiences not possessions...doing my best to live life fully!
What a wonderful stream. Love the size, the scenery and boy the size of the fish is fabulous!
A favorite for sure!
Fish and streams, what a great combination. Thanks for sharing.
Favorite video . Been binge watching them and these big slabs are primo
Cut my eye teeth fishing in Idaho with my dad as a coach. My favorite stream is just about the same as in this video.Time has taken its toll but eyes still work. You bring back many happy memories.Keep working on yours.
That’s beautiful, just Grande. Love those streams. Great stuff
Thank u much!
Epic video, I always love fishing small streams.
Those small streams are a good time for sure!
Wow! What a place to fish and such wonderful trout. You have a beautiful country. Thanks for sharing 👍😀
Fortunate to have some awesome places to escape the grind!
Great series!!!! Keep them coming.
Going to for sure!
Great video! Im lovin the scenery, and the fishin!
Thank u, some of the reasons I chose that spot for the holiday weekend!
Nice fish very cool video. Can’t wait to see your Idaho vids.
Thank you, Idaho starts Sept 30th!
Learning so much about setting hooks and letting the catch play out, thank you!
Glad it is visual b/c from what I've been told I talk way too fast and mumble, which my wife tells me more than anyone on here lol!
@@LooknFishy lol, some have the gift of gab, others just show how things are done. both are useful, but when you're hooking into a nice cutbow in an unexpected place, watching you play it out is so much better than words. And the moose! no words needed :)
Agreed, I've seen a lot of books and videos that say to set it light or even just raise the rod tip to set the hook, but this makes me think I've been consistently way too light on my hooksets. Been loosing a lot of fish to casual hooksets.
Best vid so far I can remember regarding, quality of fish. That one cuttbow made the day, even if the rest of the fish was small. But all the fish where great! Great product!
Haha, nah day was made when I woke up for the 25th time and my only plan was to fish! Those might have been small for a huge river like the white, but they weren't small for a stream you can jump over in most places lol!
Nice Stream. Beautiful fish.
Thank u, was a good time!
Some great Fish . LUCKY YOU. WISH I WAS THERE.!!!!!
Definitely fortunate!
THAT cuttbow and the BIGGEST brown were astounding for small water (as if all the other fish weren't great, too!) Drew, this is great getting to see your adventures and it's fun to "be along." Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks...definitely having fun sharing the adventure with everyone!
Great job my friend. Sit back and smile. Hell have two or three beers. Always watching
Haha, I did!
😯
Oh my goodness, you could tell that stream is nice and clean plus clear. Also nice beauties right there that you caught.
That was a great day for sure!

👍👍
phenomenal!
Thank u!
Colorado must have some insanely fertile streams to be able to support so many healthy looking trout. I'm so envious.
Why I drive 20+ hours and sleep in my truck camper for 2 months lol!
More on point, your travels are very entertaining to an old fisherman here in California.
I'm glad to hear it b/c sharing good vibes and creating positivity is incredibly important to me!
Really enjoy your videos. The combination of camping, hiking & fly fishing is excellent.
Don’t usually comment on videos, but wanted to encourage you to continue.
Many of us are living vicariously through your trips!
Really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking a minute to pass on the good vibes!
Living the dream!!
Someone's gotta!
First one looked like a triploid. Monster size for how big that water was too
Definitely wasn't expecting to find a big cuttbow!
Enjoy your videos. I am a bit envious.
Thank u much!
awesome looking water. Wish i could make it to that side of the state more. Keeping it simple in this kind of fishing is the best. keep the videos coming love this stuff man.
Thank u, definitely will. Got them scheduled into Dec now!
Man - have to love big fish in a small creek. We don't have have many of those opportunities in Washington State - thanks for sharing the adventure. Cheers!
None in Arkansas either but I dig road trips!
Fish of dreams in a stream like that. Wow.
No kidding, was a super sized surprise!
Great fish for a tiny stream
The kind of surprises I like to find!
Great teaching
Damn, that's an awesome fish in any water let alone that little stream. Awesome content brotha. Stay safe out there!
Definitely a surprise!
Awesome video as always. If you ever make your way back to NM I would love to show you some of my favorite hidden streams! Surprising how big the fish can get in some of them.
Would love to take you up on that offer! NM is a great place to fish!
Man, again. Incredible fishing... The places, fishes, the explanations you bring about the time and things happening, and your silent persona when in action. Just doing what you like, It's relates to me when i am in the river too. And, is so nice to watch every new vídeo... Great respect man. (Shame the fishes here are small Astyanax in the most fishings)
Thank u for the good vibes they are much appreciated!
Super! Formidabel!
Thank u much!
Oh...and the trout are BIG too.....
It's good luck to step in cow crap nice brownies on the fly, nothing better then Colorado trout👍🎣🎣
Nice bud.
Haha, good to know!
That is some great fishing Man I am Jealous!!
Was a great time and totally unexpected!
Sweeeeeet! 🤙🏼
Right on!
Stumbled on to this site... Awesome fishing but wished you did some catch and cook though!
Talked about why I don't in the video, fishing saved me!
@@LooknFishy thanks for taking the time of respond. Am glad fishing was able to do that for you! Take care and stay well!
Cool I was "like" number 1000!!!
Nice cutt
Thank u!
Undercut Banks...almost always hold trout . Good size Browns in a small stream . Dude watch were you're walking those Cow pancake piles will get you all the time !
Truth like trout condos! I think the cows came thru and added more while I was fishing lol!
Привет. Природа просто супер. Очень красиво! Великолепная речка. Прекрасная рыбалка! Очень понравилось. Спасибо вам. Удачи и добра желаю от души! Лайк.
Looks like you had a great day, despite the rain..and to see a moose just topped off the day...wondering if you have ever fished Henson Creek, west of Lake City??..also Big Blue Creek, NW of there??...enjoyed the video as always...stay safe!!
Nope can't say I have.
Bring biodegradable soap and shampoo and find a deep hole in the creek and brave up ,sometimes you get use to the water temp ,other times it gives you a headache, you caught some really nice fish here
Haha...I hear ya!
That big boy looked like a cutbow
It was!
Awesome video, Drew. I feel like I've fished this stream, but hard to tell. Thinking it has some pesky ATV traffic off to the distance, but otherwise beautiful.
You definitely might have, the road runs pretty close to it so any ATV noise would carry for sure!
Atv noise is now part of our reality. Love those small streams that produce fish. Life's good especialy with a beer.. And... hot shower😉👌
We're that located
I have really enjoyed and envied this fishin trip u are sharing with us Drew. It looks like it has been a blast. I was curious are u back hm now or are u still on the road fishing?
Thank u! Yea this trip ended in mid August. Didn't have internet so sharing it all now. Hope for a few shorter excursions this fall after it cools off some!
@@LooknFishy lol man i know when u aint lyin. Im so tired of this hot summer. Here in Okla we finally got our first decently cool day. High of 79. So i took the day off and am goin to enjoy the coolness. Glad u had a great trip. Sure does look fun as hell on video. Im sure they dont do the real thing justice.
When I saw you hold that fish 8:08 my jaw dropped, what a nice fish for that size of stream. I had a question though, how are you so confrontable so deep in mountains alone with bears, lions and moose
Was a cool stream and totally unexpected! I just love being out there so I guess those feelings are the ones I focus on!
I want to get into trout fishing exactly the way you are doing your videos in smaller streams. I dream about what you are actually doing. Camping and fishing way off the everyday beaten path of paid guides and larger rivers. I live in Mississippi so there is good trout fishing very close over in Arkansas. Still your videos are great to watch but disappointing knowing I will never fish a stream like the one in this video. Camping and fishing in remote places must be a wonderful experience. One that I would love to experience but most likely never will. I dream about what you are actually doing so your videos are exciting and fire me up but they are also disappointing at the same time. Keep doing what you do cause not all of us who watch have the opportunity to do so. Thanks for showing me what I would love to do. It keeps me inspired to one day say “the hell with it, I’m going and I don’t care if it hair lips the Pope.” Was planning to go to Arkansas next month to fish and ride my Harley but decided not to. Older now with feet of clay and decided riding somewhere other than to the store or fishing in Arkansas was for younger men. I’m going to Arkansas to trout fish and ride my Harley Davidson around the so called Natural State. Cant experience life if you stay home. I encourage everyone who has a dream of doing what Drew does to just go and do it. We may not know just how to go about it but do a little research, be a little prepared and just do it. Guys like Drew give guys like me, and I suspect many others, the dream of backcountry trout fishing and camping but we say I just don’t know where to go or I have to go by myself. Drew was by himself. Of course he was probably raised being taught what many of us would love to have been taught. My father took me fishing once, it was a pay catfish lake. I am a general contractor who builds houses but I am hands on. I run excavators, track loaders, tractors, can wire a new home but I don’t know where to do what Drew does. It was never taught to me. I again, if you bothered to read all this I encourage everyone who is like me who dreams of fishing for trout to just go and do it cause I am.
Appreciate the good vibes. I'm was born, raised and live in Arkansas...truly believe anyone can do what I do. More about attitude than means, but everyone's situation is different. My family and I made decisions 15 yrs ago that allow me to do what I do now, but it has taken years for me to do this. Truly believe there's an adventure for all...but each have their own level they are comfortable with so if AR is it... go live it! AR can definitely be an adventure and we have great trout water!
In 1969when I was 16 I was gifted a pristine 62 Ford Falcon which I drove to a dairy farm pond to fish. When I came back over the levee a herd of cows had been rubbing on it for hours. Ouch!
That's a tough way to learn that lesson. We just lost a stove and some pans lol!
I've lived in Colorado my entire life and prefer small rivers and remote streams all over the state. I've lived on the Western Slope and in Southern Colorado. Over the past 50-plus years, I've found quite a few spots that could be compared to those I see in your videos. Most of the really good ones I can't fish anymore because fly-fishing clubs in Denver and Boulder moved in and made them private. Are these streams in your videos private or on private land, cause I sure can't seem to find great streams like that anymore?
Have heard that so much in the last 5 or more years. One of the reasons I tell people we need more advocates for our waters and not secrecy! Not necessarily sharing the access but definitely encouraging people to explore our public lands and even state purchased access bc private interest will buy them up!
Everything I fish is public...you can see a car parked across from my camp in the beginning of this video. This stream see's a fair amount of traffic.
Was that a cutbow? I think I heard you say that. That fish was sweet!
Yup it was. Never even saw a rainbow in that stream lol!
Holy Cow Drew!! What an amazing cut throat trout! What do you think, 20 or 22 inch fish! Loving this video! My Brother lives in Colorado and I Feel a visit coming on...LOL!
Haha no idea but I switched back to 4x right then!
Its is refreshing to at last somebody who how to properly release fish. Wetting hand, realizing quickly. Not taking a ton of picture or video's. All reputing that is beautiful fish, that beautiful fish, that beauty. Isn't it beauty, bla, bla, bla. All the while oxygen starving the fish its pethic to watch.
Thank u. Definitely do my best to show it and hope people notice. Trying to be a better example since I too see tons of the opposite.
Drew, please take me fishing.
Been told my videos kind of bring u with me. So in a way I already am!
Great videos...... but I see you working so hard(like I used to)..... you should try tenkara fishing rods.....yup
Haha, I've heard that before but I always wonder how they'd work when I'm fishing under the tress and barely have room for a 7.5ft rod! Tenkara seems to work best on open water but my traditional fly rod works on all water!
@@LooknFishy watch teton tenkara ...... email him and get him to take you fishing .... you both would love it .... yup....you could make vid with him.....
I was wondering if you could educate me on why you don’t mount the solar panel to the cap of the truck. Thanks and love the videos!
Just didn't have time. I walk thru my build in an earlier video...but basically got my cap about 2 weeks before my trip and none of the roof rack systems were in stock. However, I learned with a portable system I could park in the shade but chase the sun which was nice.
@@LooknFishy Thanks Drew, I’ve actually watched probably 75% of your videos and saw that one but forgot what you had said. Your video was the first I had seen that had to do with converting a truck bed to a “camper” and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. I’ve seen so many videos about it now and can’t remember if it was you who said, “…it’s a drive inside me that I can’t explain, either you get it or you don’t”, or something to that effect. Truer words never spoken! I grew up in Oklahoma but spent every summer with my grandfather where he taught me to fly fish for rainbows in the mountains, and now I would absolutely LOVE to make a trip cross country, doing what you did, ending it in Oregon on the streams and creeks I remember so fondly. Fingers crossed! Thanks again for all of your content and keep it up!!
Dang... those are some dandy fish!! Enjoying the heck out of your series..
What color of fly line do you prefer...? Thanks in advance.
Not really but I like a muted color or a stealthy color...like an olive or wheat. I'm not a fan of bright colored fly lines unless it's in the salt when I'm sight fishing and want to see the distance between my streamer and the fly line to help pick up eats. For example, rarely feel a redfish suck in a fly but I often see the white flare of the mouth open/close bc I'm looking in the right area!
@@LooknFishy thank you so much!! Appreciate it.
You fish in beautiful country for a living. What batteries are you needing to recharge? Great videos.
Dang drew that fish was huge. Was it a cuttie or a rainbow? Also what was your dropper and the size fly that monster ate? Oops I just heard you say it was a cuttie. Wow! What a way to take it easy and relax, look out for the pies.haha. enjoyed the video, until next time.😀👍👍👍
Took a size 16 perdigon! My top shelf hopper with the perdigon dropped was pretty effective the entire 2 months!
Nice. It always amazed me how big fish will eat such small bugs.
I know you’ve completely demonstrated that you’re a catch and release guy on the trout in your videos. Do you ever keep a couple trout for supper in a pan on your Coleman stove. Love me some fresh trout in a pan. BTW, I’m a new subscriber to your channel and love watching it. I’ve got my son in SD watching also. One last question, in some of your videos on the streams, your video pixels a lot when you’re focusing on moving water. Is that because of your GoPro or what? Keep up the great videos. Watch them all the time. Thank you.
Yea, I have kept trout and fish in general but not so much in the last few years. Just got bored with it but I have nothing against it. And might keep a few in the future...just depends on how I feel at the time lol! Appreciate the support...definitely can't do what I do without it!
Yea, I think it's the setting I recorded on during this trip. I used 1080/60 and the lag is a little behind. On my short trips, a week or two I record in 4k/30 but didn't have the space to save the huge files with 4k on a 2 month road trip.
look like brown trout
Drew, do find that you stay below a certain elevation for mountain fishing?
Not something I look for when I start searching. But I definitely check it and it can be helpful for timing when to visit or what you might find in a stream. Especially the higher elevations.
That cut was beautiful. Any guess as to its weight? 3#??
Really have no idea barely held him. Was super happy he swam off strong...definitely a long fight with the 3wt.
OMG how beautiful ❤️
Where are you? I want to go😀
Thank u, I list the areas in the descriptions or in previous video...this is a 2 month road trip series from NM, CO, ID and WY!
Catchin bigger fish than me and Im fishing anadromous water
That was a crazy fun stream!
really would love to know where these places are located. I am new to Colo and trying to find places I can reach in stock 4run.
Got a video on my channel that goes thru all the resources I use to find spots. I drive in from Arkansas so I bet u'd have better luck than me!
BTW, what equipment do you use to record the videos?
I film with a gopro hero 8 now. Been happy with it!
Do you see a lot of these fish before you hook them?
Some times I do but mostly just fishing likely holds. I try to keep my distance in the smaller waters to avoid spooking them and I don't see as well as I did in my youth lol! I definitely look for rises or refusals!
Maybe I missed it what solar panel and controller is that
Renogy 100w portable with 20 amp controller been happy with it!
We're is that located
Colorado!
What part of Colorado is this?
South of denver!
@@LooknFishy I'm so there next year. I'm seeing all kinds of great water down there. Have you fished the Arkansas river? I fished rock creek last weekend (Montana) and caught a 2lbs 6 oz cutthroat on a dry fly.
