Surprised by a BIG FISH in this stream but SHOCKED by what I found in the woods

- I'm truck camping in Idaho and fishing this amazing stream. I was expecting lots of 8 inch fish and didn't expect to to find any big fish, especially considering the amount of people camped on it. But what SHOCKED more was what I found in the woods! Crazy what people will do in national forests. I wasn't expecting much from this small stream, it was packed with 8inch trout (like those from the first day on this stream) but ended up having a fantastic day. It was definitely appreciated after the struggle from the day before!

I always like to see Anglers on CZcams show respect to the fish, careful handling, not keeping them out of the water too long while you talk about it or take photos, and then a careful release giving them time to recover. Its sets the younger generation a good example to follow, well done Sir. Best wishes from the UK.
Thank u, definitely try to leave it like I found it so others have the same experience!
As a young angler that just got into fly fishing this year. Can confirm this statement.
It's not always about numbers or size of fish, it's the experience of being in a beautiful creek side campsite that gives your soul a rest. Great vid, Drew..
The experience is all I chase...say it often...I chase the experience, not the possession!
Hey Drew! Just wanted to say, I appreciate your style on these videos. No distracting music. Not a lot of talking and freaking out just because ya caught a fish,
and you showed us all that there's lots of fish to catch, ya just have to look for em. I'm sure you're getting a bit tired living out of the truck and all, but I wanted to say thanks for all that you did here. It appears your have quite a few viewers now as well. Very cool! Anyway, thanks for everything. Hope to see you next summer!
.
Really appreciate the kind words. Always great to get feedback and insight to help make these as entertaining as possible. Humbled by the interest I have received!
I'm so glad I found this channel , thanks so much for posting all of this.
Glad you enjoy it!
Yeah drew, as fishermen/outdoorsman every once in a while we get those perfect days. Take it and enjoy it. I think those days are given to us in return for the tough days on the water. You know what I mean. Enjoyed the video. I loved hearing the enthusiasm in your voice. Until next time. 😀👍👍👍
Came right after a tough day too!
What a great campsite find! Gorgeous Westslope Cutts in that small stream too. Such a great day - love the randomness of each day!
It was a fantastic day. Love how the truck camper means not having to plan anything...totally random and exciting to just go and see what I see.
I like how you commented about youtube facebook and instagram being a journal for you. That resonates with me. Being able to revisit those memories and appreciate how fortunate we are is an amazing thing. As always thank you for sharing. Looks like you are living like a king!
Thank u! I'm one of few (and you) who really like social media for what it can be. Sure there are some bad things with it but I appreciate it for connecting with others who share a similar passion for the outdoors and a place to record the adventure. And I believe we're starting to see there's a way to do social media and be responsible, respectful and protect these resources!
Congrats on hitting 15k subs! I know that's not what you're here for, but I found you channel in the middle of the pandemic and it has been really fun to see it grow over the last year, and watching your channel has completely changed how I plan my own trips. Thanks for providing such great content! I'm looking forward to the next round of vids. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. Truly humbled by the attention! It's been great connecting with so many others that share a passion for fishing and the outdoors!
What a beautiful big Cuttie. Well done Drew.
Such a great surprise!
Beautiful place.
With winter closing in these videos are sweet too watch and remember all the fun fishing this last summer. Glad you got to see this place. I am already stoked for next year.
So am I. Should be a really good time, esp since I have a better idea if the areas!
Beautiful Cutthroat and
Camp Stew. Good combo!
Hard to beat!
Awesome fish..
The Freedom pal, the freedom. Bravo!
What it's all about!
I have never seen so much Orvis stuff in my life lol. Im like that with Fishpond
Another great spot. Nice to find a spot where there are no other folks around. Really like when you describe the type of flys and leader set up.
It was crazy busy just down the road looked like spring break! Yea, I try to add that info in every few videos rather than repeat it every day for 8 weeks lol!
Awesome spot. This was the year of the small stream due to the crowds and high temps. I almost said "yay" when I saw you catch that small fish after lunch - first time I have seen you get a small one in many episodes! Great stuff as always!
Yup, tried to stay high up and off the big water due to temps. Had a few days of small fish the first video in the series has a bunch and the day before this one when I got rerouted I found some small but really pretty cutts! Caught a ton tho, they just never make the vids due to them being nearly 20 minutes already. Lots of fish sit the bench in the series lol!
Another great video! You're living the dream man, thanks for sharing
Very fortunate for sure!
Super! Yes! Splendid fish and vidio!
Thank u man!
Really enjoy your videos!!
Remarkable cuts in that stream. Thanks for sharing.
It was amazing to find those!
Bug net... a giant bug net would be great. Another beautiful location and great fish.
Yes it would!
Love the way you find these incredible fishing spots.
I shudder when I see all the flies especially near my food. In my mind they all just came from that outhouse! Yikes! Love that stream wow the fish were big!
Those dinnertime flies didn't come from out of nowhere, they came from the outhouse!!
Haha, I know! Bug net is a must have!
That last fish on the ant was huge! Awesome like always.
Yea, was shocked to find anything that nice in that stream!
That whole part of the country has been in unprecedented record drought for a while now. The wildfires suck for the residents living there, but its natures way of returning nutrients from dead trees and brush back to the soil. Hopefully they'll get some relief this winter. And it's good to see so many fisheries appearing to still be thriving despite the long severe drought.
It was a crazy summer. Hope it all gets normal for u guys soon!
What a nice cutthrout. Good filming and editing again. Thx. Torben
Thank u Torben!
Once again another great video!. If you don’t have one, think about picking up a thermacel, you can buy almost anywhere Walmart included. They work outstanding for black flies and mosquitoes
You deserve an Orvis sponsorship! It appears your a big supporter of their merchandise. Love the series!!
Orvis has been good to me and ask nothing in return. If you've followed my background and being a stay at home dad...no chance I could afford the gear I use. Very fortunate to have dialogue with them when I have a need.
Hey went to South Fork Colorado..what a place..stayed in riverbend resort what an awesome place ...its where national lapoon did movie the called camp komfort ..they stock trout right behind the resort..i caught 30 trout in two days ..anybod on here this is a honey hole !!
Love what you are doing. Thanks for sharing
Happy to share the adventure!
Love your videos. Gets me excited for winter steelhead fishing
I definitely need that in my life!
This is a great trip - looks like your intuition has led you to some sweet spots. Hell is, of course, other people.
If i go fishing, this is definitely what i have in mind, fish and cook some, eat some. The rest, takem home. By the way, nice view!!
Thank u!
It's not silly backing stuff up on separate drives just in case, it's sound practice! Been following this whole tour and notice you've gotten altitude adjusted (your attitude doesn't need adjusting ) you're not as winded any more.
Yea I got acclimated in the first week. Might have looked winded in the beginning on a few long hikes...definitely two that were long and straight up lol! Hiking several miles every day for 2 months was pretty awesome but I run 25-30 miles/week at home so it wasn't a big deal. Plus here I'm well below 10k
Trout and you very close friend
Right on!
3 weight 7 1/2 foot rod. That is mostly what I use and my favorite set up with a 3/4 weight reel.
Hard to beat that set up!
YOU BROUGHT A BANANA?!?!
Yeap, thats what i like, mondays and thursdays😌
Haha, I dig it!
Hello, it's a magnificent location, the river has a Japanese atmosphere. You did a great fishing!
Wow, that's pretty cool, never heard that before!
Very nice! I live in North Idaho, am a a fly Fisherman and have never seen this stream.
My first time also!
Another great vid and another beautiful stream Good stuff man!
Thank u kindly!
I live in Idaho I need to go explore my own backyard maybe when school is over for the semester at least I have the Boise river to keep me somewhat entertained
Hey buddy, wheres this crazy " BIG TROUT" ???!!!🐟🐟🐟🐟🙈🙈
The flies came from the outhouse. A small pail of lime goes a long way towards mitigating this. Even if you're digging catholes, it's a good idea. Don't over use it because it slows decomposition and you need that to get the nutrients back in the soil.
Yea my wife's family has a hunting camp with an outhouse. There's a bucket of lime in there! Not sure I'd add lime to my packing list...2 months worth of catholes spread over 7k miles thru 4 states shouldn't be an issue.
@@LooknFishy I agree, if only one person does it.
Man what a BEAUTIFUL place. You have a sweet set up. I just wonder why do you never cook some of those delicious trout. Seems like it would be the perfect fit while camping and hiking and fishing wild fish. I would have to at least once a week.
I do just not very often these days. Nothing against it...just not the experience I'm chasing now!
Super video.
Thank you very much!
great camp site, nice fish. the flies are a bummer but worst of all the places like that I know have other people there now. no more solitude and no more fish. 😢
Yea I was worried about this stream after I saw the million people camped on it (vid before this one). Definitely a nice surprise to find quality fish!
Those flies stopped eating in the outhouse to trade up to stew meat and onions! 😂
I know, why I ate in the cab of my truck lol!
Another grest one. Have you thought of maybe velcro-ing bug net to you awning? Might give a little reprieve from the bugs. Take care and be safe out there.
Not until today lol. Great idea, definitely gonna look into diying something!
Dude while you were talking about a 71/2 foot leader, right across the creek and slightly up to the left was a 71/2 foot or better furry guy peeking at you from behind a tree!
Haha not surprised there were always signs they were close!
Can u imagine having a stream like that behind your house ? Or even the white river ? Which I'm close too ! 😁 hey Drew , I thought I'd let you know , I don't know if u believe in sasquatch or not ? But Idaho's got quite a few sightings , especially anywhere around elk or water. Freaky !! 😲
I can't even imagine having a trout stream with in 5 hrs...the white is that far from my house. But nice I have a huge national refuge in my back yard and spend many days lost in it! Haha, I didn't know that but not surprised with all the wilderness found in ID!
Really enjoy your videos ! I live in Colorado and so many of the places look familiar, but it's hard to tell one spot from another, even when I remind myself you are in Idaho and not Colorado. As for the out house I would rather find that than have the woods festuned with toilet paper roses. I myself could not have spent that much time alone, I have managed a week at a time while bow hunting but by the end find myself talking to the trees.
...enjoying the videos, what's next after the Idaho series...???...now that it's going into fall and cooler weather what tactics would you use to fish the same streams you fished all summer...some kind of dropper setup or just a single midge...???...
Still got plenty of ID and Wyoming which won't end till mid Dec. Definitely do some fall and winter tailwater fishing. Usually hit the marsh around now for redfish till Jan but after the hurricane last month, probably not an option. Guess I might just have to share my local bass and grass carp outings...stopped filming those last year but might start again.
It almost seems those Cutts are migrating? Maybe traveling up the tribs from big water??....how can they get that big in that small water?....Amazing!!
Was thinking they might have held over from the spawn. This was mid July. The biggest trib this stream flowed into was over 30 miles down stream. Otherwise, definitely crazy!
@@LooknFishy I guess its possible?..who knows?...suffice to say its fantastic and great videos! I know that when we fish steelhead on the coast, we have timed those fish to be able to travel about 15 miles in two weeks. Cutts?.....I have no idea. Super great adventure......Living vicariously thru you lately!!..LOL
When you going to wash that truck!! Geez... LOL.
Haha...but the dirt hides the scratches and dents!
@@LooknFishy Man you do have it all figured out!!
Hey Drew, really enjoying this series so far! For maps do you use an app on your phone or do you buy paper copies?
Never used an app. Still get paper maps, like knowing they'll always work! Got a vid in the description that goes into all the resources I use and all I used on this trip.
Drew your vids inspire me, I'm retired and would love to chase the same dream...how do ya get your wife to COMPLY???
Haha, the first thing is never use the word comply! Seriously my explanation is lots of planning and communication. This is our family life style...my wife and kids travel pretty often too. They did Disney, Salt Lake City, Memphis for camps and my wife just returned from a 10 day trip over seas. Helps we dated long distance while I was enlisted thru 2 deployments and a 9 month recall after 9/11. Also I didn't do much outside of family stuff from 2007 to 2015. Maybe one day my wife will get on here and share her view!
Went camping in the collegiate peaks in CO couple years ago and the yellowjackets were really bad - only got stung a couple times.
Do you have any criteria/process you use to pick the “right” blue line to fish? You seem to pick good spots 😂🤣. I live here in idaho and appreciate that you don’t say where all these streams are though.
This stream I literally looked at a map when I couldn't get to the area I had planned...shared that video on monday...and found a blue line that was close. The others I researched all last winter using the resources in the video, how to find remote spots. Just linked it in the description but also in my 7k mile road trip playlist
9:28 move that water bag to a new hot spot on your black truck's hood. as often as you can.
I do when I can but generally leave and don't return till late afternoon!
Damn flies/bugs. I hate them suckers!
Why I say a bug net on the camper is a must have!
Just found your videos last week. This is the third I watched. Beautiful scenery and fish. Also, thanks for making it so informative about the camping experience too. Very worthwhile investment of time for the viewer. Thanks again.
Awesome glad to hear that!
Will you be putting up your black caddis nymph recipe ?
Love your stuff! Thank you! Do you have a video in which you discuss your camera gear and setup, and how you handle your camera and angles while fighting and releasing fish?
Not a dedicated video b/c I just wear a gopro attached to my hat. I bought an action hat 5 yrs ago. The hat is gone but the mount works in any hat. I just take the hat off to talk into it or release fish. Use to carry a small tripod that I used for non pov shots but stopped carrying that this year. So a hat and gopro hero 8, plus lots of batteries and that's it!
@@LooknFishy Nice and simple. Thanks!
Have you ever brought a gold pan with you for some recreational panning on the side ?
Hi Drew. REALLY love your vids. Straight-forward, informative, and beautifully shot. One question: what is your contingency plan (God forbid) if something happens? I'm watching you climb down the rocks at 3:25 and it got me to wondering. Something goes wrong, no internet. How will you get help? Thanks!! I'm headed to Wyoming a a month and would like to know what optiosn there might be.
I want to fish & film like you Drew! Another excellent episode👍 Steve @blackflycreations
What about grazly bear in the area
Love your vids. Your fish handling is right on. Were you in Colorado?
Thank u, try to put them back strong for the next person. Areas are listed in the series either in a past video, title or description. This is an 8 week series thru nm, co, id and wyoming shared in order!
Hey, do you use a 3 wt line on your 3 wt rod? I tried a 7/6 3 wt rod from Echo, and ran into problems with the rod not turning over size 16 parachute adams on a standard nine foot 5x leader. I found it casts way better using a 4wt line instead. Also, how has the real seat held up on you’re recon? Has the lower threaded portion of the reel seat ever come unglued? Looking at switching Orvis. Thanks
I do, run orvis pro textured and don't have any issues. Have a video on my channel that goes into why I don't fish glass 3wts...I prefer a faster rod which helps...might be helpful!
Yep. I'm always skeptical about tent camping in some areas where hard shell campers frequently use, especially in grizzly country. Unfortunately some people always get drunk while camping and sometimes dump all of their left over corn dogs in the bushes, then roll out just for you to pull up the very next day and set up a tent. I prefer to tent camp off the beaten path for this reason alone.
You can't go wrong with sleeping in a camper shell on a pickup when camping in grizzle bear country. Easier to sleep at night and don't have to deal with lightening storms at 2am either.
You carry any bear protection when back country fishing? Also, there are quite a few small rattle snakes in north Idaho, easy to get tagged by one when scaling down rocky river banks. Always take my time looking around my foot steps when navigating rivers in that area. When I was younger, I use to feel much more invincible and would hop & skip around that area like it was nothing but a thing. The older I get the more I think about stuff when off grid.
So true! Only way I'm getting in a tent these days is if I'm floating a river or backpacking in!
Привет из Кыргызстана. Отличное видео. Я только что подписался. Я тоже форелист. И у нас такие же речки как у вас. Я рыбачу только на форель. У вас хорошие экземпляры , крупные. А домой хоть забираешь рыбу?
Ant on 5x. Nice! I have a hard time seeing those, do you use patterns with a parachute?
No, add some red in the wing!
Great content!!! I'm subscribed and binge watching!!!
You wearing your camera on your chest, or head?
I wear it attached to my hat. Take the hat off to speak to it or get release shots!
@@LooknFishy You should invest in a Thermacell for the mosquitos and blackflies. They work great!!!
What costas do you prefer? Ever change for light conditions?
Forgot the name and I've worn the name off the ear piece. I know they are 580p with amber lenses...like amber for sight fishing! No, I just wear one pair...I'll fish red indi's or dries with red in the wing during low light and the amber lenses pick up the red really well.
Any griz in that area?
None that I saw but locals said there were!
What is your camping rig?
Sleep in my truck bed camper...got several walk thru vids on my channel!
Pardon me if I missed it in this or prior videos, Drew, but are those West Slope cutts you're catching in the Idaho portion of your journeys?
No worries, I will answer every respectful and honest comment, regardless of how many times I may have answered it in the past. Yes sir, they were!
How many spoils of tippet and leaders etc did you pack? Or did you have to resupply on the road a few times?
I brought 2 of 3x to 5x and 4 tubes of floatant. Never visited a fly shop. Just stopped for food or gas!
Wow that’s pretty good for that much fishing. Last year I had 60 trips in the mountains being off for 7 months. I used way more tippet lol. But it was my first year fly fishing
So did you use that outhouse? LOL!!
Of course, why pass on such a fine facility lol!
@@LooknFishy ha!!

2:31....On this episode of,"101 and 1 Ways to Break Your Neck Trout Fishing".....
Truth!
Less dishing, more fishing chatty cathy.
Wet wade much out there or is the water too cold
I only wet wade in the summer. Save the waders for tailwaters and cold months around winter!
fantastic videos, thanks for every one of them. but. dude. you really need a better camera...
Haha, gopro is the best I have found for solo grab and go fishing. Would love to have a camera crew and a real camera but The Discovery channel hasn't replied to my email!
Hello what camera you using ?
Gopro hero 8!
@@LooknFishy very good picture quality can you tell me the settings on your camera
Strange that you don't scaring the trout when you come that close
Haha, yea I always say don't work harder than you need and let the fish tell you when you need to work harder. Fished all over the US and rarely need to get crazy stealthy. Approaching from down stream and limiting false casting helps a ton...especially when fish are hungry.
Dude
That's a privy. Be glad it's there. Hopefully it's a good distance away from the river. Everyone. Including you should use it. The people that take care of that land probably built that.
So people didn't poop all over the place. My point is too much poop equals contaminated
Land. Water. And fish. So next time you go back to that camp site
Take some wood and screws
And fix the bathroom.
Nah, that's not a privy...it's a chore now! I hear ya and recognize it was built away from the stream and probably done to centralize the human waste in one area. I'm not against the idea of a common hole...but those can be built to be taken down easily with tarps etc...my family has done as much. However, I'm a supporter of, leave no trace AND more importantly...you built it you are responsible for it....don't leave it for others to deal with! You can see what its become...more of a dumpsite (no pun intended) and just a big pile of litter. I live 26 hrs away and only the people who built it or found it are aware of it...so it's not getting repaired. What will likely happen is the people who built it will not return to use it. It'll be left to further deteriorate...or destroyed in a storm and become more litter. We have a responsibility to clean up after ourselves when we use national forest/public lands...can be the outhouse, the worm box, rapala container or the paper bowl in the fire ring...don't leave it for someone else to find and deal with! I hate seeing the TP tumbstones just as much. But it's definitely not a privy...it's become a chore and one most people aren't going to deal with when they've been at work all week and have a weekend to fish/hunt. Don't leave these issues for others to deal with...there are better ways!
What rod is that you are using ?
My old orvis superfine carbon 7.5ft 3wt.
Have you ever fished the green river below flaming gorge in Utah??
No, typically avoid the well known streams and search out the more remote or less trafficked areas.
@@LooknFishy there's definitely lots of those. Would love to see you make content in my state!
Lochsa or st joe drainage?
Wow, who knew? It's Trout, not potatoes
Probably hunters put the outhouse in , if your camped in one spot for two weeks and everyone in camp was doing their business behind every bush , not a pretty picture,
For sure hunters and I get it...seen several temp shelters like it but these are public lands. Easy enough to break it down when they left. We can do better and should expect better from people on our public lands.
Flies explain the stench lol
Haha and maybe why the guy in the camper left!
Great video! Always waiting for the next.
9:30.....leaking solar shower....why not bathe in the stream?....what a wonderful way to wake up feeling refreshed and sing a few octaves higher.....
Haha, done that plenty of times. Wanted something better over 2 months...plus took plenty of cold showers in the Navy!
@@LooknFishy I just watched your post on why you don't keep fish. Now I understand. The Outdoors saved me as well. Just celebrated 30 years of being sober last June. What saved me, was grouse hunting.....and it expanded into fishing, gardening, wild plant foraging, mushroom hunting.....It turned into a passion for food....And so, you mentioned that in the past you ate catfish.....and I really appreciate that you are not mentioning numbers, and show casing how you conquered some wild thing like so many hunting and fishing channels do.....I can see you're reverence of life....But....as I mentioned, my passion for food....and I love a plate of fried trout.....surely, there must be occasions where you are a bit slow on the strike, and that wee tiny hook hits a gill.....and a fish is doomed to perish....and for those instances I have a suggestion. In a 1-gal zipper bag mix the following 50/50 Bisquick/cornmeal seasoned heavily with chili powder, black pepper, and Lowery's season salt....shake gutted, mortally hooked trout in mix to coat evenly inside and out. Let bag sit for a few minutes, shake again. Remove fish, let rest for 10 minutes or so....slip into hot oil, fry until golden brown on both sides, using a spatula to flip oil into the body cavity......
Very cool man, definitely something to be proud of. Alcoholism eventually took my mother at 55 so I understand the significance of your accomplishment! Yea, I eat some trout, especially those that occassionally can't be released. I definitely still eat warm water fish like bass, crappie, redfish, specs and catfish...probably almost the same since my local water is cypress swamps and warm water. Sounds like yours and many others is mountain streams and trout are common for the area! Cool, I'll try that recipe, always looking for a good one!
Great day?)
So true!
I'll bet all those flies showed up from the nasty outhouse you found. That was horrible!
My question is, what's the point going fishing when you don't even eating them!
This vid will answer why I don't... czcams.com/video/ShhAwD8R_ps/video.html
