50 trout in 70 mins - Is this FLY better than BAIT? Rig/technique explained!

- This is the first 60 minutes of my last day in Wyoming and I'll show you why the perdigon might be the most effective fly ever. I've talked about the flies and been asked how many fish I caught on my trip so often I decided to cut this video from my last day and show/explain my rig and technique fully. I'm at a spot I've never seen or fished and it's about 9am. It was the first place I stopped and started fishing that morning. Rather than tell you why I think the dry/dropper rig with a perdigon dropper is the most effective rig...I'll show you and explain my technique, including the rig, for breaking down a hole and catching around 50 trout in about an hour from a spot I have never seen! At the end of this day, I created a dedicated video where you can see the exact flies used on this trip and every other stop on my 2-month road trip with more detail in this video: • The ONLY FLIES U NEED ...
Still not convinced see the rig more in other vides from my trip linked below and the video for this day will be shared December 23rd!

Sorry, I didn't do a great job showing the dropper. But at the end of this day, I made a dedicated video discussing the flies from today's trip and all of the flies covering my 2-month road trip...see it here....czcams.com/video/9ygM0y04qrs/video.html
Glad I subscribed. Thanks for sharing!
Do you just cut and tie new droppers every time you change depth or do you use the adjustable dry dropper?
@@stephenjackowski8773 I cut or add on anytime I need to adjust. I know some hate adding knots on droppers but imo no different than adding them above and I cut into my leader all the time either to add a small streamer or shorten/lengthen it to nymph or fish dries.
I struggle to get on the water once or twice a season, and you are helping to fill a huge void in my life. Your videos are awesome. I'm clearly one of many who now lives vicariously through you. Thanks for sharing your incredible experiences.
Thank u!
Make time for yourself.
@@strickostricko yeah, balance is a struggle. I shouldn't complain though. I've had a charmed existence compared to many. But I'm committed to spending more time on the water before father time creates more hurdles. And at some point I need to use the equipment and flies I impulsively buy.
Drew, that location was incredible. The scenery, the sound of the water, the solitude, and leaping fish. Perfect.
I had the same thought and after 8 hrs on it decided it was the perfect ending to a crazy good road trip. That video will come out Dec 23td!
Right rod, right weight line, right length leader, right nymph…. A lot goes into making it look this easy! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us. The stream reading is superb.
Thank u!
Have watched many of your videos this past week. Subscribed. I must say, I am envious! Well done videos as well!
I learned a lot from your video as a fairly young trout angler I have been getting better ever since I started watching your videos and I showed you to all of my friends at 🏫 school 😊
Thank u glad these are helpful!
I have watched every video on this trip. Wish I was with you. It would be easy to go home and remember this day as the finale of a two month long trip. But I think I would need to fish at least one more day. Thanks for taking us with you.
It was hard to leave for sure but also good to leave on a high note!
You're the real deal drew! This spot looks amazing.
I've been watching your videos for months and enjoy every one of them. But I gotta say, YOUR KILLIN ME! I wish I could do just a fraction of what you do.
haha, not my intent but glad you enjoy the videos!
@@LooknFishy the fishing just barely beats out the beautiful creeks and streams, mountains, forests, vistas and dispersed camping. Wow.
*you’re
You my friend are a lucky man. Beautiful country, great fishing. What a life brother. I hope you get to continue doing what you love brother.
Thanks for the good vibes!
Thanks for the outdoor experience I get from your videos.
Love those rainbow jumps, so fiesty! Appreciate the insight on working a big hole like that and a good look at your rig!
happy to share how I do it!
That looked like total blast! Hard to move on from a hole like that. Certainly worth an entire video.
Yea, it really was but gad I did that stream was crazy good!
Have really enjoyed your videos of your extended mountain fishing trip. Pretty places. I always consider that part of the country as wilderness. Yet nearly everywhere you have been there have been parking spots in the campgrounds, and well worn trails to what looks like undiscovered waters. There is just a very limited area of truly wild places, and I have enjoyed seeing you explore and discover so many to share with other fishermen, campers, and explorers. Good for you.
Definitely had a great trip. Many of these were wilderness areas which just means you have to hike in or access them with horses and such...nothing motorized. Ime, that keeps the traffic low!
Looks like you found a “honey hole”. Thanks for insight on fishing it. Always looking forward to your videos. Tight lines and screaming reels always.
Thank you happy to share how I go about it!
The trout population of that River is amazing. I never have seen something like this. Regards from Spain.
Haha...wait till you see the rest of the day. Sharing that video Dec 23rd!
Great job drew. Amazing hole. Always watching
It was awesome!
Wow. Nice find!
Wow Drew! What a Honey Hole there! Love the jumpers, nice River!
Was a great day!
Another great video! Thanks Drew
Appreciate it!
The colors on those fish at the hole, wow!
Gotta love the wild ones!
That looooong, slow drift at 7:50. Good patience shown; helpful for a novice like me to see how to NOT give up on a cast/drift.
That was awesome: I would never have fished that pool like you did: after a few casts I would have assumed I had to move on.
Glad to show a few more places trout will hang out...and also how aggressive they'll get in the water is slightly stained!
If I were to win the lottery I've always said I want to spend a couple of years in a campervan exploring the US and Canada coast to coast. A suspect that a lot of the time would be spent in places like this. I prefer hills and mountains. I can't do with huge flatlands (it's like agoraphobia, I just feel exposed and vulnerable. It probably doesn't make sense). I love being near or in water. All the places you've been to this summer are my kind of country.
I had a great time and can't wait to do it again. I definitely prefer mountain streams but maybe not as much as you! Hope you can find a way wo winning the lottery!
@@LooknFishy Well I hope that this trip business becomes an annual thing. I really enjoy the scenery and all those wonderful trout you catch. I can relate to trout.
Large and Small Mouth Bass not so much.
Those fish were binge eating for sure. Great job. I love when I get the dropper at the right depth
You and me both! Makes my life easier lol!
Thanks for the instructions that helps a lot.
Happy to add how I do it!
I liked your assessment of how to fish the hole, but what I liked better was the fact that you didn’t fight the fish to long which would also alert other fish in the area. Nice job.
Quick releases= more fishes!
An old man told me, "if there is trout in a stream you can catch'em but if there ain't no trout in there you ain't gonna catch'em" ..... yup.... he knew his sh*t..... pretty sharp old dude .... he called it his "cornfield logic"... lots of times his answer to a question was just "2 plus 2 equals 4" .
Wow great one! Lots of good size Rainbows . Thats what we call a honey hole.
Definitely was!
You're a machine and inspiration
Great video & insight on how to work a great honey hole!
Happy to share how I do it!
Watching this makes me so hungry for fresh trout. Great video.
Thank u much!
You eat the fish you catch fly fishing!? You can’t do that!!! Lol. Getting some fresh fish fly fishing is a lot of fun and tastes great.
Great content Drew! This video had excellent balance between catching fish and your thoughts on fishing technique.
I’m wondering which part of the country you or your viewers would recommend for a 3 week trip I’d like to take in mid January to early February. I just purchased a class B RV and would like to do a trout fishing journey. I live in Minnesota, where believe it or not we do have some mid winter trout fishing in the SE corner of the state. But I would like to do some exploring in ANY state in the country. Thanks for all your effort. Been fun to follow along.
Awesome...try to add some technique stuff in when I can! I'd be interested in their thoughts too. Personally Arkansas tailwaters can be super in the winter...but if you can wade or need a boat depends on generation which can be an issue!
what a honey hole thats great stuff !! love your vidios im jealous !! lol
I miss fishing trout. They are so much fun to get.
Truly!
Mate what a session Well Bloody done..Pauly at Wilderness Coast on Fly in Oz🤓👍🇦🇺
Thx dude, definitely a good time!
Great series, thanks! Are you running straight 3x off the line or is it tapered?
Tapered talk about and shown here...czcams.com/video/ieY9FlEUGxg/video.html
Yikes talk about a honey hole....Excellent video. Thanks for the share.
That's a trout hatchery disguised as a creek, can't fool me Even tho' I would love to angle those pools I appreciate your nondisclosure of the place It's enough to know that it is there Thanks
Won't we all wish hatcheries looked more like this lol!
@@LooknFishy Some of our streams/hatcheries look like this in NYS. Follow the trucks when stocking and this is the norm.
Nice job setting the hook downstream. Gets a better hookup that way. Something a lot of people overlook.
Definitely the way to do it!
You sir are the GOAT 🐐
This hole is just like the one I fish here in Colorado. Well hidden, and full of trout. Doesn't get much better!!
I concur!
If I had one complaint about your videos it would be that I wish your top fly/indicator was more of a high vis color so it would be easier to see.
Thanks for this video, it was an awesome hole. Wish I could find one like it.
Haha, yes I've heard that before. Maybe one day I''ll do a dedicated technique video with better graphics but mostly I just turn the camera on and fish. Was definitely a good day.
Man you slayed them !
Was a good day for sure!
What color collar do you find is most effective in the Perdigon? Orange, chartreuse, Pink?
A fantastic spot. I especially like that upper run. Just screams Trout water. Great stuff Drew. Were those Cutties or true Rainbows?
This stream was so good. The last video is super, imo, lol. There were bows, cutts and cuttbows mixed in!
You are wearing the Orvis gear, I think they should definitely make you a brand ambassador and pay you to go fish these beautiful streams!
That would be super cool 🤞!
Wyoming trout fishing is like that sometime. When I was 15, 7 of us got into a lake full of Brookies. We caught fish on every cast.. I wore out a couple flies. All the feathers were off and still the fish kept hitting. We hauled back enough fish to feed 50 Scouts.
Big champion!
Right on!
Dang drew, I wonder how many fish were really in that run of water. I have never hit anything like that before. That was definitely a special find. Enjoyed the video. Until next time. 👍👍👍.
Thx Jim, it was a crazy way to start the day!
Hey. Which rods do you use most brand, weights and sizes.
Got a vid on the 3 I recommend on my channel now! Brands listed I the description
This remains me fishing on the very first day of a trout season in Brandenburg, Germany.
A day before some spots in the rivers are loaded with browns or rainbows from nurceries and they take flies the next day madly.
Only the fish are bigger, much bigger.
I bet the crowds are bigger too lol!
@@LooknFishy Yes, they are, especially that there are only a few trout rivers in Brandenburg and they are all within an hour drive from Berlin.
Pourrais tu nous montrer quel modèle de mouche indicateur tu utilises et les matériaux de montage ?
Could you show us which indicator fly model you use and the mounting materials?
Merci par avance
Thank's
Check out my top shelf hopper fly tying video...materials are in the description! The one in this video just has 2 layers of foam. Also, a video linked in the description that shows the flies closer!
Reminds me of a stream my father and I fished in Idaho before I had to leave to serve because of an event in Korea.
Haha an event in Korea!
Looking fishy great fisherman man
That was awesome. What fly line do you use?
SA amplitude infinity!
talk about a honey hole lol awesome vid
How do you decide when to mend upstream or downstream? Love your videos. Keep it up.
I'm sure Drew has good insights, but I'm not sure there's a rigid rule. However from what I've seen (and experienced), if the water between you and your target isn't complex with currents and slower than at your target, then, mending downstream is what I see a lot. If water between you and the target, or holding water, etc. is faster, then an upstream mend is what I tend to see and try. But, I'm sure it varies depending on the 'lanes' and currents, too.
@@michaelkissane6138 Thank you, that makes sense when explained in that manner.
Yup pretty much what Michael said. You're basically just reading water and trying to move your fly line so you get a dead drift which requires reading the water and moving your fly line to keep everything close! If the slower water is closer and the faster water further away...if your flies are in the faster water...then your flies are moving faster downstream than the fly line...downstream mend to keep them together. If you don't you'll get a swing where the fly line sticks and your flies swing across currents. If you're flies are in slower water with faster water between you and your flies...flies moving slower that your fly line...you'll need to mend upstream to keep them together or you're fly line will get caught by the flow and pull your flies downstream. In this video I had to do both and also a few times throw a upstream followed by a down stream mend to deal with the varying currents. If you can...high stick the runs and avoid mending!
What brand tarp are you using on the back of your truck???
It's my rainfly for my hammock. Just a diy
The Perdigon fly represents shrimp... Good choice!~
I love the perdigon, with a double nymph rig it is almost always one of the nymphs, and usually catches fish.
Absolutely, it's a fish catching machine!
Do you own the property and stocked the stream with rainbow trout?
No! Talked about this being the first time I have ever fished or even seen this stream in the description. I live 23 hrs from here lol!
How did you find a wild remote stock hole?? Lol. What a find great technique on fishing the run.. keep sticking em!!
Haha...no idea but when I figure it out I'll share it!
Drew, what is your estimate of the debt of that pool? Seemed to me a good 5 feet. But you were nymfing just below the surface (I guess 15 inches max).
I had the same question. Seemed like about 30” drop between the hopper and the perdigon. Hole was likely deep.
It was probably between 3 and 4ft. I was short near the end of the video but started around 2.5ft. (you can see the dry on the surface and me unhooking the first fish in the net). The good thing about stained water is fish will get more active/aggressive and in many cases they'll come off the bottom to feed. I always tell people I only work as hard as the fish require. In clear water that often means getting deep but not always the case with some stain! I love some stain!
@@LooknFishy That stained water probably also explains why you caught most of the fish on the nymph I guess.
You ever do any steelhead fishing. I'm from Oregon. Do you ever fish the north west? I'm a big fan of your videos
Thx man! Nope, never fished Oregon!
What are the chances we catch a couple of these fish more than once in a couple hours?
This was an awesome series, thanks for sharing! Would share with us what your top five dropper flys were and what you were using on this day? Thanks and can’t wait for your next adventure!
Already did...check the description for a video "the only flies u need on a summer road trip out west". That video was done at the end of this day with more detail on the flies I used here and all the flies from the trip. I just pulled this from the longer video on my last day...to be shared Dec 23rd
Insane!.......WTH?......the only hole I've ever fished that is even remotely like that was the Texas Hole on the San Juan, but that is combat fishing, not like this wild stream......incredible!!
Haha just glad I had it to myself!
Looks like you had a blast with that spot!
Did for sure!
Do you de-barb your hooks?
I fish barbless...either pinch or buy them barbless.
So what nymph were u driftin?
Perdigon. Talk about it in the description and in the video, the only flies you need on a summer road trip out west...I filmed it at the end of this day but shared it early for those following on my 2 month road trip.
Drew, were you following the fish stocking truck again?
He's a trout whisperer!
Haha, I just pay them to show up where I am!
David when you catch a fish one after the other like that it would be cool that you change your fly by a hook of same size and you present it to the fishes the same way as when you had the fly on and see if it makes a difference on your fishing success. I always wondered how important it is to have the right fly when the fishes are feeding. The présentation and fly size is likely important but the fly details??? 🤣🤣🤣
Haha I hear ya. I'm more of a, if it ain't broke don't fix it, kind of guy!
Be nice to know how ur set up?
Make sure you watch till the end...talk about the rod, leader, length, flies and tippet in the video. All I left out was Mirage LT reel and SA amplitude fly line. Also check the description for more on the flies...I made a dedicated video at the end of the day and shared it earlier in my road trip for those that were following along..."The only flies you need on a summer road trip out west"! Also...don't miss today's dry-dropper tip video pulled from this spot too!
That hole was bananas! I bet you could have taken an hr lunch break and done it all again! Really odd you didn't get any dry bites as you can see bugs in the air in that video.
I was kind of shocked none came to the surface either but I guess that confirms that 99% of trout feed subsurface lol!
where is this exactly
What fly are you useing
Check the description!
@@LooknFishy thank you I missed it
@@richardduvall6512 no worries didn't do a good job showing or mentioning it!
this is so easy to cast and catch these tiny trouts in normal waters, I challenge you to do Fishing with me in the Himalayas, We have got Rainbow and brown trout here.
I would see if u can catch just 3 trouts in 70 minutes.
Following the hatchery truck??
Haha, I just tell them where to meet me!
It's just the spot come to Castaic i want to see u do that there lol
Haha, if u say so. Got over 2 dozen videos from this 2 month road trip thru 4 states on my channel that say it was more than the spot!
Beautiful spot, awesome trout, quick put-backs....checked all the boxes for fish porn! Thanks for sharing. I'm lucky enough to live and explore Idaho streams and there is nothing better to soothe the soul than to be in environments such as this. Tight lines!
I agree completely! I try to minimize my impact, so others find it and experience it like I did!
Wow, what a day you had. You'll remember that stream for sure. That scenery makes it even better! How do you find all of the remote streams you fish, Google Earth? Great video Drew!
This stream was crazy good. I use the resources in the video I linked in the description and on my channel...how to find remote spots!
Awesome honey hole NICE!!!!!!
Thank u much!
I would have been really tempted to throw a big streamer at that first log and see what happens haha.
Haha...probably would have to had I not lost my last one!
L also like fishing like you
You picked that hole clean.
Doing my best to educate them so they get bigger lol!
Did catch any of the same fish twice?
Don't think so but have done that a few times on this trip so always a possibility.
Thought you were going to show your dropper
I showed the fly in a fish's mouth but meant to do it again at the end...I just forgot which is common for me when I try to make a tutorial style video since I just fish and do videos as an afterthought. But the good news is, at the end of this day I walked thru the flies I used and all of the flies I used on my 2-month trip. I linked it in the description, but here's the link...you'll notice it's from the same day as this video: czcams.com/video/9ygM0y04qrs/video.html
Right on, Fish fry tonight !
Dream hole
No doubt!
Its almost time for ice fishing. Actually more like drinking beside a hole and laughing at ourselves on why the hell we are out fishing in the cold.
Haha sounds like a good time!
trout ray burgman the bible of trout fishing
Whats a squid know about fly fishing?
this is so nuts.
Definitely!
I've fished a lot of streams in Wyoming, but I don't recognize this one. Too bad for me
Wyoming is awesome...so many just like this!
With that lead head you can really place the fly.
And get it down!
No it’s the awesome waters your fishing brother!!! Lol!!
Definitely doesn't hurt!
In CT you could spend 70 days and not get that many.
Yikes!
“Man catches same fish 73 times in 10 minutes” 😂
haha it was closer to 12 minutes!
And i'm excited if I catch 5 in 70 minutes lol
Haha, then this would have been stupid fun...was for me anyway!
