UPDATE: I've been playing my PS4 Pro for a few days since upgrading, and there are noticeable differences everywhere. From in-game menu loading/speed and world loading, to hitching and frame drops, and finally to the home screen responsiveness, this drive completely eliminates all of it. Very worth the $200. Plus, an extra 1TB of storage helps as well. I reccomend this upgrade!👍🤘😎
Just got my Samsung 870 QVO 2TB in the mail. Gonna upgrade my console since finding a PS5 is pretty much impossible right now.

Just make sure that if you're plugging in to the front, whatever it is; it needs to be 3.0 if its in the front, and it needs to be 2.0 or higher in the back. I had the same issue BTW

Hope I get as good of results. I needed 2TB for PS4.
But I did upgrade my ASUS ROG notebook to a Samsung 250GB Evo as BOOT drive, saving the HD as a storage drive. The Win 8 boot times were almost instantaneous.

Even luckier for me, I didn't crack the box on the WD yet! It's going BACK!
Plus, because I'm a year behind everyone else, the new QVO 870 is out for $10 less than the WD AND it's only 1% slower than the EV 860! Bonus!

This was very useful, plan to do exactly all that today.
When it comes to loading time comparison, not sure if less than half is correct, though. Did you compare loading time of the same positions? Fast travel doesn't last same amount of loading time on different locations. Loading in a city may take 45sec while loading on some open plains may take 30sec or indoors 25sec, so I hope your comparison of loading checkpoint matched ;)) Anyway, thanks for step-by-step on how to swap HDD to SSD and restore backed up data. Cheers!

Cool video! I got a PS4 slim in December 2019 (yes, very late, I know) and a week later I got a 2TB Samsung SSD (same as yours, but 2TB) and installed it. Took me about half an hour total from removing the original 1TB HDD and installing the ssd. My boot times are significantly quicker and my GTA V loading times are about halved. Overall having the 2TB was the best thing I could do since the PS4 only has two USB ports and I always keep a keyboard plugged in, and a charger for my controllers.
Admittedly I am worrying about the heat exposure for the SSD but after 5 months it runs just as solid as day one even though I play every day.

I notice in some videos on CZcams that for those who are upgrading their hard drive that are missing a few key steps to update the Software. I had to find out this myself, that you need to create a folder labeled PS4/UPDATE/ with the PS4UPDATE.PUP file for re-installation from PlayStation website in order for it to load the software correctly. After that, I am now able to restore my PS4. Having to upgrade my HDD to 2TB SSD was the best decision I made. Load time for games will be more smooth and better now. One thing to keep in mind. If you're playing with friends with the default drive, you won't be able to load into any map until everyone does so it makes the upgrade worthless unless you're talking about solo gaming. This happens when people have ps5 games that are still on ps4 and there's people on both platforms in the same team.

I would like to see a comparison between the QVO and EVO SSD's. I was under the impression that consoles won't get the full benefit out of an SSD due to the limitations on CPU. I would say that the QVO with 300 odd mb/s transfer would get similar results to the more expensive EVO.

the biggest bottleneck is the horrendously slow hard drive within the PS4 console. That's why even just putting games on an external mechanical hard drive will load them faster, because even USB 2.0 speeds will load faster than the internal drive.

The reason for that is the lack of TRIM support. By overprovisioning with a larger drive you go longer before hitting write slow downs from write amplification and trimming. Many claim "modern SSDs have garbage collection" yes they do, but if they aren't filesystem aware they won't know what is garbage. Was on the fence about upgrading my PS4 pro with an SSD knowing that the system cannot take full advantage of SSD speed due to hardware limitations. After countless hours of research and CZcams videos, I finally made the jump and threw in a 1tb Samsung 860 evo. I can confirm that the load time improvements mentioned in the video above match each title and at times even come in a second or two faster. The system is snappier and more responsive and rendering issues in some games have even improved. Overall, a good choice with slight improvements. Completely smokes the OG PS4 when comparing load times together and is a good way to get a little taste of the future with the PS5 just around the corner.

When you format the USB (Make sure it has nothing important on it, because it will be erased) make sure to format it with FAT32. Also You need to create two folders in all caps. Then you need to place the update file that you download into the correct folder. It's not too bad to do. If you want to backup and restore your saved games and data then you need an additional external USB drive with enough storage. You can do the backup under settings, then restore when you have the new hard drive installed with the new operating system.

A potential reason why horizon zero dawn loaded so much quicker compared to the rest is due to the high-speed cache on the SSD. Since it was a fresh install more of the game would have been still stored there. Loading another game and resetting would put all the games on a more natural playing field. Not saying it the video needs an update or anything but just an FYI.
