  • In this video, I will show you how to replace your PlayStation 4 Slim hard drive with a fast SSD. You only need a new drive and a screwdriver and a few USB drives to transfer your data. If you want to upgrade a "phat" model, I have a video for that also.

If I'm using an external HDD for extra storage for my games, after I start using the internal SSD, the games inside the external HDD are going to run from there? The PlayStation 4 Slim is compatible with SATA II and SATA III SSDs. However, it's important to note that the PS4 Slim's internal SATA connection is limited to SATA II speeds (3.0 Gb/s), so using a SATA III SSD (6.0 Gb/s) won't result in faster performance due to the bottleneck imposed by the SATA II interface. While both SATA II and SATA III SSDs will work with the PS4 Slim, you might not see the full speed benefits of a SATA III drive.

Hello, was just about to follow your instructions and I thought this would be an extra safety precaution this being my first ps4 new last week. I upgraded with a 960g Kingston SSD as per your instructions no problem, installed half a dozen games and off I went. I thought some of the games didn't load that fast and thought it would be easy to revert back to the original 500g and run some loading time comparisons, the machine started in Safe Mode and asked for the reinstallation file via the usb, tried a few restarts but the same thing. So tried with the SSD and got the same thing now with no option but to reinstall the system which went smoothly and when restarting all the games and setting were intact. I have a 4TB SSD to install as an upgrade. So I tried using another 1TB SSD to backup my PS4 but it kept indicating not enough space even though the PS4 only had 870GB out of its 1TB being used. Then I tried cloning the PS4 drive to the 4TB but the program copied every partition as is without allowing me to resize, so I would end up with 3TB of unused space. I ended up using the 4TB to backup the PS4, must be partitioned and formatted as EXFAT file system. Then I copied the backup to my 1TB SSD, also EXFAT file system, and surprise! it all fit properly. I deleted the partition on the 4TB drive left it unallocated. Installed it on the PS4 which I was then able to initialize with the "Update" file using a USB Flash drive formatted as FAT32. Finally I was able to restore my data with the 1TB SSD, the one my PS4 kept saying "not enough space" to back up in the first place. Lessons learned: PS4 recognizes EXFAT and FAT32 file systems. You need a drive with twice the capacity for the data you are trying to backup from the PS4.
