The real Doctor has retired, and now the new Doctor that was literally *pulled* out of the original one has taken up the mantle and will continue to have adventures. The original will likely go on to eventually become the Curator.

      I concur. It acknowledge, treasures, respects the previous Doctor even the series that some Whovans disliked. What I loved is the joy and care in how this was made especially the care of storytelling including the care of characters involved.
      There were some moments in which some people will complain about being too woke but when not the whole plot point but in passing it didn’t bug me. I wish the 13th had been handled as well but that is history now and still needs to be honored.

    Bigenerational from what I can make out from BTS and dialogue... This is not two doctors, this is still one Doctor. 14 will eventually regenerate completely in to 15 at the point we see him do it here. 15 comes from WAYYYY in to the future in a way, after 14 has lived a normal life.
    14 is effectively living a normal-ish life as a means to rehabilitate himself and for once in his existence, rest. When he has done that (maybe a million years like he said to Donna in ep2) he will be ready to go and the time line goes back to the regeneration in to 15.

      When you put it like that it makes sense (other than Tennants TARDIS must get lost or destroyed in the future at some point). I personally have struggled with this bi regeneration, as your explanation of the regeneration process makes sense. It just doesn't come off that way in the episode, as I think your comment happily explains. I can live with the 2 Doctors 2 TARDIS arc if the 14th sometime in the future regenerations going back in time to that moment. It wraps it up neatly. For 15 to move forward without past mental baggage. I just would have liked that explanation made clear...not a statement by Ncuti that its therapy in reverse. Your understanding of this fluke split regeneration makes total sense. Which makes watching Ncuti's Doctor series alot more palatable to go forward, knowing its still just 1 Doctor and not 2 seperate twin Doctors. Thanks for the very needed explanation.

    My understanding is that 14 doesn't get anymore regenerations. When he eventually dies he'll come to as 15 in this moment against the Toymaker. And he'll be in a postion to hold his old self and let him cry and tell him to take a rest because he's spent his last life going to family potlucks, and sneaking his niece to Mars and sitting in his grief, talking over his past with his best-friend/Sister until he finally reached a point where he could tell himself he'd only ever done his best, and that's good enough.

    Definitely my favourite of the specials. Bigeneration is a concept that sounds stupid at first, but it's really no different from the Doctor regenerating and flying off to other times with other Doctors still existing. The Giggle was perfect. This was truly the first of these specials that felt like a celebration of 60 years of Doctor Who. I loved the framing device of John Logie Baird and the invention of television. Really reminded me of that episode from series 2 about Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. It had all these great callbacks and mentions to so many characters, most if not all of whom are no longer accessible to the Doctor like Amy and Rose Tyler. Is it wishful thinking to hope that no mention of Martha means Freema Agyeman will pop up again soon? Even though it's very clear that she wasn't mentioned because she lived a happy life and their story didn't end tragically. Neil Patrick Harris was fantastic! I loved the switching of accents. Evil camp is always fun, especially when it’s as sinister as this was. And the “Spice Up Your Life” dance sequence. I still have no idea what the hell bi-generation means. I mean we heard from all the Doctors previously in the reboot that regeneration was super dodgy but making a whole new one is not a twist I was expecting! But this establishes that in a one-on-one-hundred-million-billion-billion chance, Time Lords can reproduce asexually. However how many times can the Doctor make a copy of themselves? The end fight with the Toymaker had the frenetic pace of Ten's fight with the Sycorax way back in 2006. I loved Ncuti’s energy. He really felt like a showman, much more than the other Doctors previously. And because they said he processed his trauma, Fifteen seems like he’s going to be a Doctor who is having fun and not haunted by his dark deeds or running from something. Which is a Doctor RTD never gave himself the chance to write. It's like Fourteen was supposed to go on this journey of trauma healing and at the end regenerate into the happy and fun Fifteen but the Toymaker got in the way. And it looks like we have another RTD mystery box on our hand with The Meep’s boss still left unanswered and now the Toymaker’s “The One Who Waits.” Let’s face it, it’s probably The Meep’s boss. I love that Fourteen’s costume got split between the two so Fifteen spends the entire episode in underwear! But because he got the shows, not only does Fourteen speed the entire 3rd act barefoot and commando, which is hilarious in and of itself, Fifteen feels even more naked. Donna’s “Do you come in a range of colors” is perfect because it addresses Ncuti’s blackness without making it a big deal. _Because It’s not!_ I love that they let Ncuti keep his true accent. I love that we didn’t have to say goodbye to Tennant again. Not really. That scene of him having lunch with Donna's family, really his family, was just perfect and I'm happy that his last words are technically “I’ve never been so happy in my life." You can really hear Tennant’s Scottish accent on “wheelchair accessible.” It really feels like they are setting up a UNIT spin-off. And I am here for it! I need it to be Kate, Shirley, Mel, and the Vlinx, whatever the hell that is, and maybe Osgood (fingers crossed).

      @jackdubz4247 Před 6 měsíci +3

      That's a very literal interpretation of what The Doctor says to himself. And I don't necessarily think that a "time loop" is what is being referred to here. I see the "fix yourself" thing being more psychological. With regeneration being a renewal and a casting off of past "sins" or ailments.

      @SokaPup I don't know, I took op's stance. The Doctor has been carrying the trauma and really deepening their own darkness since 9. It feels like the point of the scene with Donna's family at the end is that 14 is going through therapy and can take a break because 14 knows there is the Doctor out there to help out.

    @koralinawho Před 6 měsíci +7

    Not only I loved this episode and the whole bi-regeneration thing, but also, I can't even begin to explain how heartwarming it was to finally get closure for Donna having the happy and fullfilled life she deserved with her memories and his best mate back, but to have my fav Doctor back as a better version of himself, having grown a lot from Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, and to finally see him settle down, relax, being happy and loved. It was beautiful.
    And I know it's controversial, I've already seen people going crazy about it and I'm just meh. The thing is Doctor Who is a series when you can literally do ANYTHING and it will fit perfectly. The sweet point is to do so by doing it the right way, well explained and emotionally driven. For example, the controversial ideas that Chibnall brought into the table wasn't really bad. I can take them any time. The problem was the execution, the lack of sentiment and consequence of all that. I don't care if the Doctor is or isn't a Time Lord or if he's an entire different species, or even if he's some kind of demigod. My issues were that Chibnall made me feel NOTHING from it. I felt more about the entire flux thing in the brief conversation Fourteen has with Not-Donna in Wild Blue Yonder than the whole season 13. And that says a lot. I don't care how they change the canon. It's a 60 year old show, of course there's gonna be plenty of inconsistences and canon changes, but I want them to make me feel something out of it. Make me believe in whatever story you're telling me. And I think RTD is perfect at doing those things. That's why the bi-regeneration was mind-blowing, because I was crying my heart out and because he gave it a motive and a lot of emotions to support it. I trust him to do brilliant things as he always did.
    So yeah, I'm on board. Ncuti's run is gonna be fantastic, I'm sure of it.
    (And we get to keep Tennant which is the most wonderful thing of all this mess!)

    I don't think it undercuts Ncuti for the time being. It can actually help him to move on from both the trauma in character (we already see a way healthier mindset in these moments), and on a meta level the writer controversy of 13. But without having to press a big reset button, losing all that was. That's what 14 is there for.
    I do also wonder about what rules they decide on. But maybe 14 retiring means he'll end up not regenerating. Like the master before decided not to regenerate.
    Big fan of the social commentary in this one. Very true, very clear but didn't overstay its welcome in the plot itself. It was the setting.

    I think they will have more adventures for Tennat's Doctor somehow, as they implied he still takes the TARDIS for a spin sometimes, with Rose, with Mel... but I'd love for a new encounter with the Doctor's Daughter - now, as we know she can regenerate too, she could even have a different face. I'd love a Hello, dad! and Tennat going his typical "Whot?!" :D And there's a lot of things I've been thinking about before this bi-generation, 'cause I watched old episodes while waiting for these specials and in between: the 10th Doctor kinda started bringing the Time Lords back into the world his own way, his parthenogenesis into the Doctor's Daughter, his diverting the regeneration energy into his old hand and then having the Human Doctor and Doctor Donna as a result of the metacrisis - then Donna passing on part of that to Rose - and even if they "let go" of that, I don't think that actually that is completely gone, and the way we see Donna act in the UNIT HQ, I kinda get vibes of the Doctor Donna still being there in an integrated way. Before I saw the bi-generation scene (and even before I heard spoilers about it) I had already started thinking that "this face" came back because it is the one with the biggest potential - and maybe truly the one form that could have faced the Toymaker again and not die, especially because he could appeal to the extra-Doctor resource that Donna was - but somehow ultimately maybe the only form with enough potential to this final result of bi-generation? And also this sudden talk of other beings with two hearts suggests that we are going to face more Time Lords maybe? Also something the Toymaker said that he fought tha guardians of time and space and turned them into puppets... is he talking Time Lords? Were the Stuckeys Time Lords at origin? What actually happened to Gallifrey after it got dragged into reality by the Master and then severed again - did it return to that pocket in which it was sealed with the Time War? Oh, and regarding who picked up the tooth - as a woman, I studied the manicure of the characters in that scene for those red nails and it seems it was Kate Leftbridge Stewart. And if a UNIT spin-off is in the making, how cool it would be for it to debut with a story so full of havoc as the Master coming back in the bosom of UNIT, corrupting it and UNIT having this fight springing right at its core?

    On BBC iPlayer (The BBC's streaming service) the eras have been grouped under three sections- _Doctor Who_ "The modern adventures- from Christopher Eccleston to Jodie Whittaker", _Doctor Who (1963-1996)_ and _Doctor Who (2023-) So it would appear that the BBC _is_ playing this as a new era. New-nu-Who, if you will.

    I’ve no real issue with bigeneration (although it’s not been well explained) but I don’t like that this is the second time that RTD has found a way to keep a version of the Tennant Doctor around while also regenerating him on to the next version. And this one doesn’t feel as earned as what was done with Rose’s Doctor.

    15:02 - ever heard the phrase 'folding up shop'?
    22:25 - part of the reaction to the wheelchair-accessible, is due to one fan writing in that they loved the TARDIS but would be unable to enter as they use a wheelchair. So the new TARDIS had a ramp added.
