Why Boudreau is so confident Ovechkin will hunt down Gretzky

  • Bruce Boudreau coached Alex Ovechkin in Washington for parts of five seasons and was behind the bench for Ovi's first two Rocket Richard Trophy wins. With Ovechkin 46 goals back of Wayne Gretzky for the all-time scoring crown, Boudreau joins That's Hockey to explain why he always believed Ovi would break the record.

Brucey predicted right when Ovi had 8 goals in 43 games... Saying he would still be a 25-30 goal scorer this season and he breached 30 last night. Way to go Brucey...

The reason why Ovi was slow at 1st half of a season was upper body injury, only after AllStar games he slowly started to get back his game again.

As he should be. The numbers are fairly well in his favor by this point. And even if he isn’t there by the end of his contract, if he’s close he’ll probably do another season just to get to it

I think this is quite possible, if only he wants it himself. A player who scores his 20-30 goals in any situation will not become redundant in any team.
What I mean is that if the Capitals do not want to renew the contract with him any longer.

You're probably right, but publicly, in D.C., he's always expressed ambivalence about the record. The could just be false modesty, but multiple times he's said he didn't think Gretzky's record was possible to break. I also think he's getting tired. With the exception of Carlson and Wilson, everyone he grew up with in this organization will be gone by the end of the year. His two closest friends are in Carolina. He's not North American. I think he's looking forward to the end.

What a weird strawman. Like anyone at all is talking about breaking Gretzky's assist record, let alone a dude not known for assists. It probably would seem ridiculous to criticize something that no one was talking about.
Among Gretzky's MANY records, the goal record is one many people thought would never be broken, so it's clearly something worthy of discussion as a player is approaching it. You are basically saying "Gretzky didn't try hard at scoring goals", as if that invalidates the record? It sounds beyond ignorant to describe Gretzky's goal scoring as "just a side hobby".

Saying Ovi has focused all his energy on scoring goals is as ludicrous as saying goal scoring was a side hobby for Gretzky.
