Savage Abuse: Ben Talbot VS Brittany Fraser - Where is the line?

  • I woke up this morning to read that Ben Talbot has been suspended for two months based on his behavior in this video which has been called a "savage" beating by the meeting. When I woke up this morning to read the headlines, I, like most people wanted to watch the video, but as I watched I could not help but think that this style of riding looks all to familiar and wondered why it was an issue this time.
Is the FEI only banning riders when there is social media outcry? And only stopping abuse when it happens on a live stream?
If the stewards start calling out abuse in the warm up, they lose their jobs, if judges start ruling it out in the show ring in dressage they will no longer be invited back to judge. Heck, if they dont give the Global Dressage Show favorites the right scores they wont get invited back either, but that is for another video.
How do we balance accountability to the sport and to the horses when the only people with anything to lose are those that call the shots on what is abuse?
At a time when the whole world is watching and the FEI is doing there best to control the media it seems the only time they want to control the riders is when there is a social media outcry and their reputation is at stake. Seems like an exhausting business model for those of us sitting on the sidelines. Kind of takes all of the fun out of a watching the sport.

He was immediately dismissed, all of his horses disqualified, and he was kicked off the showgrounds. He had received an official warning in April and as this was his second within a year, he automatically received a 2mo suspension from all FEI events. The horse has been removed from his stable and two of his sponsors have cut ties so far. So.. yes. He's been punished.

The man was clearly "beating" the horse out of anger. It was overt and can't be denied. The woman is questionable at best. I didn't see anything from her that necessarily raised my blood pressure. But the guy, definitely! He deserved what he got in my opinion.

The Dressage looked awkward and horrible but the grey Jumper (Talbot) was hit WAY too severely for it NOT to be anger. Grey was jumping out of his skin after the beating stopped. Rider error should not be taken out on the horse.

I was a show steward, I did kick a woman out of a show for abuse of a horse in the ring, it was the last time I was hired to steward. She had a big barn lots of students and refused to attend a show if I stewarded. she had over faced a young horse. The average horses at that show were about 16hh, she comes in on a youngster that is pushing 18hh and so he had a hard time doing a triple jump... no kidding. She beat him in the ring and I headed for the out gate to get to her, as she comes out she started to whip him about the head... Always comes back to money talks.

These are clear as can be. But abuse is the norm nowadays. The dressage that is now seen as normal has nothing to do with horse welfare but is only about ego. Hyperflexion and Rollkur are accepted for some reason. It has to end

The first video, yeah the horse was forward already. The rider was sitting way back, pulling, kicking, and whipping. That is NOT fair to the horse. The second video, that was way out of line. The horse stopped and the rider began BEATING HIM. Just one whip behind the leg then turning around to approach the jump again would have sufficed.

When I was first learning about dressage (as someone who doesn't ride English) - what it was, and what it should look like in the ring - I was told that you shouldn't even be able to tell that the rider is giving cues. That was back in 2005-2006ish and I was amazed at how subtle riders were. Now? All I see is kick kick kick WHIP WHIP kick YANK PULL kick, all the way down the length of the arena and back. And this is only what they're comfortable doing _in front of an audience/camera_ too.

I think there is a great deal of hypocricy around what we find appalling in the treatment of animals. Whilst I believe competition horses should be treated as fairly as possible, I do live in a country which legally allows us to take calves off their mothers' so we can drink their milk. I have never been punished for having a glass of milk whilst the cow I'm taking it from is bellowing for her lost child she has carried inside of her for 9 months. No one is shouting at me "foul play" Or no one gets upset when I eat a piece of pork which is from a pig that has lived in diabolical conditions. Horse people generally happily tuck into their dead bullock burgers whilst grumbling about some rider who has been too harsh with the reins, or used a whip too harshly. It is total bewildering to me. I'd personally much rather be hit with a whip a few times than have my new born child taken from me. I say this as one of the hypocrites , as I'm guilty as hell myself.

BAST@RDS THE PAIR OF THEM!! I bet that dressage horse was buted up to the ears, hoping (A) The horse's ACUTE lameness would be masked long enough for the poxy test to be performed (TBH there should officials reporting mistreatment and lameness from the warm-up area. I feel that would discourage owners / riders from making the journey with an already injured horse. Also it would block injured horses from making it to the competition arena. Heavy fines too for riders and trainers for having them ridden in a lame / injured condition.) And (B) Of course they hope they can somehow "wing it" past drug testing. In my book if they're willing to compete on a horse blatantly on 3 legs, then they'll go to extreme lengths to avoid getting found out too!!
