Whoa! What is this? Reaction to BabyMetal Death Legend 1997

  • Well, we aren't even 100% sure what this was, although we think it might have to do with Su-Metal's birthday being in 1997 based on the narrative. This is BabyMetal, with Death Legend 1997 live from 2013. This group really knows how to put on a show and their fans are amazing at these concerts.

This was a really specific show and had a lot of symbolysm.
The show was to celebrate Su's 16th b-day...and in addition to that, Su was also graduating from her role in Sakura Gakuin, the pop troop that BABYMETAL was created in, so there was a worry that it might mean the end for BABYMETAL when she left (and they play that up with the 'doomsday')
Instead, the crucifixion is the death of pop-star Su allowing for the ressurection of Metal-Queen Su.
The neck brace is a nod to the drummer for X-Japan, who headbanged so hard that he injured himself and had to wear a brace for performances...it's like the Japanese symbol for METAL AS F**K. A comperable symbol in the west would be like Slash's top hat.
The statue behind them had Su's face, and it was a nod to the Justice For All staging from Metallica. BABYMETAL met Metallica the year before at a festival and Su says seeing them was the moment that she really 'got' metal music. They'd met up before hand, and the guys from Metallica were apparently super nice and welcoming, and when they took the stage with all their volume and agression, it clicked for Su that it was all part of the performance, and a way to let the audience channel their own agressions in a healthy way...so Metallica has always been a bit of a touchstone for Su's appreciation of metal, and it made sense to reference that here, where she underwhent her transformation.
As to the song itself, DEATH is sort of BABYMETAL's 'transformation' song.
The band has a very silly mythology about the girls being selected by the Fox God and that when they take the stage, they stop being Suzuka, Yui and Moa. They are possessed by the heavy metal spirits and become SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL. This song was usually played at the beginning of their concerts and it's the moment when they transform. SUMETAL DESU! is like saying 'I AM SU-METAL!', which is like the anime trope when a character transforms into a super-hero, like Sailormoon's 'Moon Prism Power....MAKE UP!'
In interviews, the band often referred to this as a real thing, like they would play-act at it being real, and they would let themselves believe they were becoming someone else. I remember reading about someone watching them rehearsing for their collab with Rob Halford and they said 'but they weren't really BABYMETAL yet'
I think it might have been one of the reasons that they were able to be so fearless on stage when they were younger, they became alter egos that were braver than they were.

Su graduated from Sakura Gakuin on March 31st, 2013.
They had already done the LEGEND 1999 show in late June of 2013, before this LEGEND 1997 show in late December of 2013.
As far as people thinking this would be the end of BABYMETAL, they had already addressed that at LEGEND Z (February 1st, 2013) where BABYMETAL were reborn after counting down to zero.
Both Yui and Moa had Sakura Gakuin diary/blog entries after LEGEND Z, but before Su's Sakura Gakuin graduation where they talked about being asked by staff if they wanted to continue with BABYMETAL after Su's graduation.
Yui (and Su) both said yes right away.
Moa gave it some serious thought before she decided it was what she wanted to do.

The Fox God has sacrificed a Jpop idol and reborn into a metal goddess queen. We've been blessed by the Fox God.🙌
    -NotACult- 🦊🤘💀
This is another song they brought back to live concerts in this World Tour 2023 as an opener after 2017 (when YuiMetal was still in the group) and fans are really glad with this come back, although here they're using as an ender as part of this special event.
Song is heavy but wait until you hear Babymetal Death Shin Ver. from Budokan 2021 or "Sis Anger" to decide which one is heavier. You can find the kamishibai (narrated intro) translated in the description box if you're watching GuilhermeCait clip.
If you're a Metallica fan you can spot the beggining riffs of _"One"_ song, as well of the -"virgen mary"- image behind (it's not, it's SuMetal resembles and Lady Justice Metallica tribute, even the statue crumbling down is an homage) they're truly BM sensei and they support the group too. Our girls said this is one of the most physical demanding song, and you can see the reason why, they normally used this song as an opener and a way to warm up for next performances, in this rare exception this was at the end of the show, an epic finale.
This was during SuMetal 16th birthday, the same place you probably saw at Gimme Chocolate!! MV and she was sacrificed as a j-pop idol and reborn as a metal goddess queen, the Fox God has bless all of us. -NotACult- 👀
The neckbrace is part of BM lore and you can see it first during Headbanger!! official MV, Yoshiki (pianist and drummer on X-Japan) suffer serious injuries during a live concert while headbanging so hard (this was way back before BabyMetal was even created), after that he needs to use neckbrace to avoid doing that movement, he still playing and being active, he's a living legend.
They are singing their names as a way to introduce themselves in japanese way but with the pun intended play of words: "SuMetal desu" means "I'm SuMetal" but she is trying to say "SuMetal death", same for the rest of girls with their respective names, and the rest of the song is:
    "B - A - B -Y - M - E - T - A - L DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"
Back then when doing promotional, TV interviews and introducing they did it the same way, you can look for a long vid with all these clips of them saying this kawaii introduction. They were taught to say "th" of "death" word by bitting their tonges at the end to pronounce this the right way, but they added a wink looking like this 😜
You'll see many Japanese fans ended their sentences and comments with "death" to remember this, unlike western fans like me. Btw it's been long since they didn't that introduction and during recent interview at "Fox 5" we saw the intro once again and with MomoMetal this time.
During an interview KobaMetal (the producer behind BM) said that when he was travelling for concerts abroads around 2015 he came to know a band like Ghosts and he was interested in discover that band doing the almost same thing they're were doing theatrically and artistically, so anyone thinking those bands are satanic and such they're just saying nonsenses, they're just doing a show in which they're playing a role, and in order to be convincent (like an actor in a movie film) they need to perform their part like they're mean it, and the audience must be part of it and they're an important ingredient because other way it wouldn't work. That's why we said all the time "notacult", unless you actually are or want to feel part of it. ;)
Oh and just a note aside for anyone thinking this is disrespectful to western religion and whatnot, is not! KobaMetal explained he needed to make a bridge between fans and them so they can familiarizing with the BM concept with images the fans already knew, in this case he used the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series as a drive vehicule which is heavily influenced by christianity, kabbalah, gnosticism and even islam symbolism, imagery and iconography, the plot on this was never took as a blasphemy for any religion and it was mostly used for aesthetic reasons, same for BabyMetal, it was used to represent the "Death and Rebirth" concept of SuMetal own role persona while having a bridge between fantasy and reality, the reality is she decided to end up her idol career (death) with Sakura Gakuin and commit herself to this new rol (rebirth) as a metal queen for BabyMetal.
Sorry if this sound as a rant but i just keep seeing BM fans and general people who still don't get it.
Like i said they brought back this song at PIA Arena MM 2023 and now with MomoMetal being officially part of the group and also was the intro for every setlist at the World Tour 2023. You can enjoy the official MV.
    Next suggestion:
    - YAVA! with Kami Band intro live at Five Fox Festival 2017.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time 🦊🤘💀

That was actually the last song of the show, contrary to Babymetal usually opening their shows with it.
It is actually a pun on the words “desu” (Japanese for “I am” or “We are”) that can be slightly mispronounced as “death”.
And yes, you should defo watch the whole Legend 1997 show, it is absolutely worth it (like any other big Babymetal show that was recorded and released on a blue-ray) 🤘🔥🦊

    • @Greg-om2hb
      @Greg-om2hb Před měsícem +5

It’s more like that the English word,
“death,” is rendered into Japanese with the katakana デス (desu), which is a homophone of です(desu). So BABYMETAL is making a pun. Japanese love puns.
Even the name BABYMETAL is kind of a pun, as it’s Japanese pronunciation is ベビメタル(bebimetaru), which is only one consonant off from ヘビメタル(hebimetaru), the Japanese for Heavy Metal.

Great reaction, that was fun.😁🦊 It looks like you have all the explanations with the translations, the play on words ('desu' meaning I am, it is , we are etc sounding like the English word death) and so on ... but what happened next? This was the concert finale - what happened next was they announced the release date for their first album and that they would be playing two nights at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo in 2 or 3 months time.
What you should see at some point is this whole concert from start to finish as it is great theatre - it is like a rock opera cataloguing the transformation of Suzuka Nakamoto, a sweet girl with her future laid out as a JPop Idol singer who sacrifices her existence as a JPop Idol and gives up her human life to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal, chosen by the Fox God to lead the Metal Resistance.
Legend 1997 was Su-metal's 16th birthday and it was also the final stage of the BABYMETAL transformation from their beginnings as an unfunded sub-unit of a bigger JPop Idol group to splitting from that group to become an independent Metal band in their own right.
The concert started with a performance to Schubert's 'Ave Maria' where Yui and Moa made offerings of neck braces to the statue and, representing the sort of thing they may have ended up doing had they continued as Idols, an entirely lip-synced dance remix of the song 'Headbanger' (the Night of 15 ReMix).
It continued with the girls performing as they did as Idols - singing and dancing live, but with the instrumentals being mimed by the Babybones guys in their skeleton suits.
For the last 5 songs they were near the completion of the transformation with the Kami Band replacing the Babybones, so at last the live band and instrumentals backing Su, Yui and Moa ... and then this grand finale as Suzuka sacrifices herself to become Su-metal, leader of the Metal Resistance.
Nothing at all cult-like to be seen here.🦊🤘🦊😇

Another of the many references in this show is to the 1997 animated feature film Evangelion: Death and Rebirth from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Indeed, during the show Su- sings a cover of the theme song Tamashii no Rufuran (Soul's Refrain). Her performance was spectacularly good and I highly recommend it. *BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*.
    Song: BABYMETAL DEATH.
The monologue at the start is in Japanese.
So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue).
    "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…
BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*.
Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and geting them up on there feet bouncing and geting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin.
But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not geting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year".
So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess.
"All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*.
Bye the way #NotaCult, most definitely #NotaCult and anyone claiming different will be dragged in front of your Goddess and thrown into the pit of frogs or if you catch her on a bad day she will just burn you.

The name of the song is actually "Babymetal Death". It is the first track on the first album, and also serves as the show opener for their live performances. It's really an introduction and crowd warm up, rather than an actual song, which is why it has so few lyrics. Essentially what is happening is that they are spelling out the name of the band "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" and the girls are announcing their names to the crowd, "Su-metal desu", "Yuimetal desu", "Moametal desu". In Japanese "desu" means (at least in this context) "I am", so they they are saying "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal". However there is also a word play going on, because they are also saying "Death"; Japanese does not have dental fricatives (sounds that use your teeth), so Japanese people find it very difficult to say "th", so they tend to subsistute "su" in it's place and as a result, "death" sounds like "desu". So they are simultaneously saying their names, and saying "death", which is pretty metal.
This special performance took place at the Legend 1997 concert in 2013, which was held the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday to celebrate her birthday and her graduation from Sakura Gakuin, as well as the separation of Babymetal from SG. The crucifixion symbolizes the sacrifice of the J-pop idol Suzuka to the Fox God, and her rebirth as the metal goddess Su-metal. Like much of what Babymetal do, it's all grand theater. Babymetal Death is the song we show people who say that Babymetal isn't metal. #notacult
Although Babymetal Death is usually the show opener, on this occasion it was the finale, so that was actually the end of the performance.

  • @Ganimal83
    @Ganimal83 Před měsícem +12

Yes! Great one Mr and Mrs Coach! Here's a quick scoop regarding all your questions:
*Song:* Desu (silent "u") = I am / We are, e.g., Su-metal Desu = "I am Su-metal" and Babymetal Desu = "We are Babymetal". So, this is their Intro song (to 1st album and most shows / encores). Babymetal loves to play on words, so they stick their tongues out and say "Desu" with a lisp, resulting in a cute, but metal introduction in "Babymetal Death" 🤣.
*Concert/Background:* Legend 1997 show was held in Dec 2013 to celebrate Su-metal's 16th birthday. In the same year, Su "graduates" from parent idol group Sakura Gakuin (SG), and Babymetal splits from SG and goes independent. This show was also the last time the fake band (actors in skeleton onesies) was used (first 9 songs). Kami Band will become their full backing band for all live shows starting 2014.
*Lore:* Babymetal summoned by the Fox God to infiltrate the Japanese Idol industry to fuse it with metal, thus revitalizing the Metal Spirit, oppressed by the Idols. In Su-metal's fight against the "Big Bad", she sacrifices her life as an Idol and a mortal, and is reborn a Metal Goddess. This performance symbolizes the "death" of old Babymetal, and "rebirth" of new Babymetal, and also serves as the most epic and insane way to close out a sweet 16th Bday bash haha.
*What happens next:* Babymetal plays their next major show in Budokan 2014, then goes on world tour, landing them main stage at Sonisphere UK 2014, cementing their place in the heavy metal community. The rest is history.
    Hope that helps! 🤘🦊

And so Suzuka Nakamoto, Jpop Idol, is crucified to be resurrected as Su-Metal, the Metal Queen.
The neck collar is a symbol of metal music in Japan. Yoshiki, drummer, for X Japan he damaged his neck head-banging requiring him to wear a neck collar when he performed. X Japan is the greatest rock/metal band you never heard of.
They have performed this 6 times, also including Yui and Moa, plus with Avengers.
"Death" is their concert opening, as their introduction to the audience. They are actually saying I am Su, I am Yui, I am Moa.
There is just a mark that denotes "I am" from "death" in written Japanese. The statue that falls is SU, not who you think it is.

No need to imagine - just watch this show and enjoy the union of hearts in commitment to the epic transformation of an ordinary girl into a majestic SU-METAL

Awesome, others explained Babymetal Death. There were commenters that gave tremendous detail of the song and the lore behind it. One thing i would add is that after Yui sadly left the group, they stopped performing Babymetal Death. Her last show was in 2017 and she formaly anounced she would not return in 2018. That was the last time anyone has heard from Yui. They started performing Babymetal Death again as their show opener after MomoMetal was confirmed as the third member in 2023, replacing our beloved Yui-San. Wherever she is, i hope she is well and life has been kind to her.

I am not sure what others have told you, but in short Babymetal Death is them presenting themselves. Death sounds like the Japanese Desu, which means "we are" or "I am".
So, they do say "I am Su/Moa/Yui metal" and "we are Babymetal". So, when they are chanting "Death" they real chant "We are". Babymetal likes to joke. This is a joke that have grown to big proportions. They usually have a small or spectacular "Babymetal Death" in each show, in the beginning. There are other, more impressive and grand "Babymetal Death".
This "Babymetal Death" is special though. Su (the lead singer) became 16 years old the day before the concert. So, they decided to make spectacle of it and celebrate her at the same time. She is in this performance being reborn as a metal goddess or queen. And for this to be possible she has to die, of course. And ... which is very convenient when this is "Babymetal Death". So, they crucify her and then she can be reborn. This "Babymetal Death" is also different as it is the last performance and not the first.

Wonderful reaction as always, Coach! I know BabyMetal, but never saw this performance and was very impressed. It got my mind firing on a band you haven't reacted to yet that is very similar to this style or to bands like Nightwish - that band is called Ghost. They're a swedish metal/rock band known for their theatricality and creative compositions. I highly recommend for you to watch their music video for Cirise - a very entertaining 70's Carrie-inspired film. Also, since I enjoy your Kpop reactions, I thought I would go ahead and dare you to watch a boy group, lol. It took me a good couple months to enjoy the boy side of Kpop but there's some great groups out there. My # 1 group and song you must react to is Stray Kids and their music video for Maniac. I'd love to know what you think and, trust me, as a metal/rock loving 40+ year old, I didn't think I would enjoy boy groups. For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉
OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

It is weird to think that canonically in Babymetal lore Su-Metal is de*d. On her 16th birthday she was sacrificed to the metal god and reborn as a true metal goddess to bring heavy metal music to everyone. Technically this happened twice, again at her 20th birthday concert. That my favorite thing, you can just listen to Babymetal, which is great, but you can also follow a story if you want. Through the first ten years each big concert was another chapter in the story and I think where we're at now is that the Babymetal on stage is actually a different Babymetal than what started from another dimension, hence their concept album "The Other One", but it's a little murky. None of this is integral to enjoying Babymetal but a comic book fan since childhood I get a kick out of the story. From their beginning, to how Su found Yui and Moa, to how they got the Kami band (which I believe was a gift from Santa and the Fox God, to leaving in a giant space ship to explore the far distant Metal Galaxy. You get to see all these interstitial videos during concerts explaining everything, it's a real kick.

Why have a party with cake and presents for your sixteenth birthday when you can be crucified by your friends and colleagues in front of thousands of fans screaming "DEATH DEATH DEATH!!!"?
According to the lore, a J-pop idol (Suzuka) is transformed into a metal goddess (Su-metal). I tend to stress two things about this particular video: no disrespect is intended, and it is all theater. Also - NOT A CULT!!!
Typically, this song is a show opener: BABYMETAL introducing themselves. Insofar as I know, this is the only instance in which it was used to close a concert.
If you are serious about watching the entire "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" concert, here's a link to an excellent channel: czcams.com/play/PLdBAj9hZ91wCao72oSqTMLrGpIDOqzR2Q.html
This concert is a little over 82 minutes long and covers all of their first album less two songs ("Song 4 No Uta" and "Rondo of Nightmare"). However, the concert does include four songs not found on any BABYMETAL studio album. It would make for a very big reaction video but perhaps do one or two songs at a time instead? I would sit still for an hour and 45-minute long reaction video if were this concert (or "Budokan Black Night (2014)"). In my humble opinion, this concert is among the very best that BABYMETAL has done and put to video. I have little doubt that you two fine people will enjoy every minute of it. One last thing: the videos in the link do not include subtitles so if that's important to you, I suggest you look up the lyrics beforehand.
